Vision Statement

To serve as a catalyst to inspire, unite and enlist the support of alumni, friends, colleagues, students, foundations and corporations in the mission of the University of Cincinnati community to transform the lives, health and well-being of the city, state, nation and global community.

Mission Statement

To support UC’s aspirations through philanthropy by collaborating with the colleges, Academic Health Center, UC Health and other units to maximize private support. Our advancement efforts promote the development of productive, enduring relationships with alumni, friends, colleagues, students, foundations and corporations.

Summary of Goals and Initiatives

The Foundation’s Strategic Plan presents a supportive and ambitious agenda for the future of the University of Cincinnati as it embarks on the journey toward “Creating the Third Century for UC.” It is consistent with the vision of the University community, and defines what is needed for UC to continuously attract, retain and graduate extraordinary students. It supports the enhancement of exceptional academic programs, teaching and research endeavors of talented faculty. Finally, it promotes excellence in all facets of University life. Achieving the goals in this Strategic Plan will require visionary, committed, dedicated and philanthropic leadership from the Foundation.

Dear Trustees and Colleagues,

The University of Cincinnati Foundation has charted a strategic course to be an exceptionally valuable resource for the University of Cincinnati and UC Health, among the most highly ranked and comprehensive institutions of higher education, medical research and patient care.

To provide essential support, the UC Foundation exists solely to advance the goals and mission of these most prestigious, world-class and growing institutions. The Foundation has a tightly focused mission: to assure the advancement of the university and UC Health through fund raising, financial management, and donor stewardship. In a time of decreasing government support, that mission has become increasingly important to the future relevance and strength of the university and UC Health.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the founding and incorporation of the Foundation. We are grateful for the vision of the incorporators of the Foundation whose inspiration created a perpetual and significant philanthropic presence for the greater UC community.

In this brochure, you will find a brief summary of the foundation’s strategic plan, major responsibilities of the board, a brief description of standing committees, and some of the foundation’s historical highlights.

1. Focus on Donors with the greatest potential and center efforts on specific interests of donors as well as interests of college and units.

2. Develop an enhanced donor touch strategy that differentiates both quality of touch and significantly more identified prospects.

3. Build rewarding donor relationships that endure through personnel transition.

gOAL 2 Expand University-Wide Philanthropic Understanding & Participation

1. Develop curricula to educate faculty, staff, students and volunteers about the role of philanthropy and the avenues open to fostering and securing additional philanthropic resources from a variety of possible prospects.

2. Collaborate within and across colleges and programs to align the interests of potential donors with university initiatives, as well as college and program initiatives.

gOAL 3 Create and Foster Strong, Enduring and Productive Relationships

1. Expand the UC Foundation’s existing relationship with UC at all levels, especially within the leadership, academic, alumni and student ranks.

2. Make development a team approach, involving the entire university community.

3. Publicly position the foundation as UC’s preeminent volunteer organization and community “board of choice” to drive volunteer engagement.

Herschede Society The purpose of the Herschede Society is to recognize emeriti and retired Board Members of the University of Cincinnati Foundation, and to provide them a forum to remain active and engaged with the University and the UC Foundation.

Board Development As a means of ongoing governance development, all trustees, chiefly those new to their roles, are encouraged to attend conferences sponsored by the Association of Governing Boards (AGB). All trustees are eligible to receive the AGB Trusteeship bimonthly publication.

Membership Effective October 2015, the board of trustees consists of 103 members which includes 65 voting trustees; 25 emeriti non-voting trustees; and 13 ex-officio non-voting trustees. The members represent alumni of the University, and the greater Cincinnati and national communities.

Term of Office The regular term of office for all trustees begins either in the fall or spring of the academic year and usually is for a period of four years. A trustee may be re-elected for a total of three consecutive four-year terms at which time a lapse of one full year must occur before the individual may be eligible for re-appointment.

Board Meetings The board meets semi-annually. The meetings currently are scheduled for Friday and Saturday in October and April. Trustee orientation and retreats are scheduled periodically.

Emeritus Trustee Status This honor is conferred as a mark of distinction to former trustees who have contributed significant service during their term of membership.

rOLE OF ThE BOArd As the governing body of the Foundation, the board is charged with the development and evaluation of the basic goals and broad policies, plans and programs of the Foundation. Some of the board’s major responsibilities are to:

• Approve (and periodically review) the foundation’s statement of mission and purposes.

• Promote strong and healthy relationships between the foundation, the UC community, and all constituents.

• Appoint and support the foundation chief executive (may also be a shared responsibility with the university).

• Periodically and comprehensively assess the board’s performance.

• Regularly review the performance of individual board members who are eligible for renewal of their terms.

• Ensure that all fiduciary responsibilities are met, including effective management of assets.

• Insist on good planning for the foundation, consistent and complimentary with UC’s plans and priorities.

• Ensure adequate resources through active fundraising, asset management, and advocacy programs.

• Protect and preserve the foundation’s legal standing.

• Protect donor rights and honor gift restrictions.

Much of the work of the board is accomplished through its standing committees which serve in an advisory role to the board. Committees are chaired by trustees, and a senior officer of the Foundation serves as the staff liaison. Members of the board are appointed to serve on these committees with representatives from faculty, staff and administrators of the Foundation and the University who are appointed by the Foundation President. Committees typically convene semi-annually, and, often quarterly, at the discretion of the Committee Chair.

Below are brief statements of purpose for each committee. More detailed duties are contained in the Foundation’s governing documents.

hiSTOriCAL highLighTS

1912-1915Due to the long and significant career of Dr. Christian Holmes, to honor his memory, the Carnegie Corporation gave $250,000 for a chair, Mrs. Charles Fleischmann gave $100,000 to the Holmes Memorial Fund, and Mrs. Holmes contributed $250,000 to endow the Deanship of the College of Medicine and $200,000 to construct Holmes Hospital. Rockefeller Foundation contributed a $700,000 challenge grant for the Holmes endowment. Carnegie Foundation helped UC match the challenge with $200,000.

1916Francis Howard Baldwin left the residue of his estate, approximately $700,000, for the benefit of the university. He made no restrictions on the gift and gave no indication of the purpose intended. The main building of the College of Engineering was named in his honor.

1923James Norris Gamble gave $270,000 to complete the football stadium in memory of his grandson, James Gamble Nippert, who died on Christmas day as a result of a football injury sustained on the Thanksgiving Day game against Miami.

1819 The University of Cincinnati acknowledges 1819 as the year of its founding. In that year, two components of the current university were incorporated: Cincinnati College and the Medical College of Ohio. Both of these educational initiatives, taken just 30 years after Cincinnati was founded by twenty-six settlers in 1788, were dependent upon the gifts of concerned citizens. Fund raising began even before students were enrolled.

1858The early decades of higher education in frontier Cincinnati were filled with many resource crises. Then, upon his death in 1858, Charles McMicken bequeathed to the City of Cincinnati the bulk of his estate, approximately $900,000, to found an institution to educate boys and girls, which was to be located on his homestead on what is now McMicken Avenue. This endowment provided the necessary foundation for the future University of Cincinnati. “What the name John Harvard is to Harvard University, and Eliju Yale is to Yale University, the name of Charles McMicken is to the University of Cincinnati.”

1895-1905 Henry Hanna contributed $69,091.07 to build and equip Hanna Hall, the north wing of McMicken Hall. Briggs S. Cunningham gave $60,000 to build and equip the south wing, Cunningham Hall. Asa Van Wormer gave $50,000 to build Van Wormer Library, now the Administration Building. David Sinton provided $100,000 for the maintenance of the Academic Department.

1929The University of Cincinnati Boosters Committee for Athletics was appointed by Chase M. Davies, President of the Executive Alumni Council. It included 80 prominent business and civic leaders. This organization was the forerunner of UCATS (University of Cincinnati Athletic Team Scholarships), today’s athletics fund-raising organization. The Schmidlapp Chair of Aeronautics was funded in the College of Engineering and Commerce by Jacob G. Schmidlapp. $130,000 was given by “three industrial groups outside of Cincinnati” to build and equip the Charles Kettering Laboratory for Physiology.

1930Mrs. Charles P. Taft established the $2 million Charles Phelps Taft Memorial Fund, in memory of her husband, to assist “the study and teaching of the humanities in the College of Liberal Arts and the Graduate School...”

1941New Board member Jane D. Earley helped organize the Friends of The University to solicit funds each year to support UC. This was the start of UC’s annual giving program.

1946Mrs. George Elliston bequeathed $250,000 to establish a chair in poetry in the College of Liberal Arts.

1947The Alumni Association was granted permission to start an annual fund-raising campaign. Kelly Y. Siddell chaired the first effort which raised $50,000 from 2,200 alumni. Today over 26,000 alumni

contribute each year to UC. The College of Medicine began its annual alumni appeal, the longest-running annual alumni appeal at UC.

1952 Mrs. Frederick Alms’ estate gift of $200,000 made possible the new Alms Memorial Building for the College of Applied Arts.

1954The College of Pharmacy joined UC after completing a five-year campaign to raise a $625,000 endowment from local pharmaceutical companies and citizens. The endowment was a condition placed by UC on the merger between the university and the 103-year-old college.

1962The College-Conservatory of Music became a part of UC after a major fund-raising effort. $1,264,000 was assigned to CCM by the Cincinnati Institute of Fine Arts from its endowment and $1 million was raised from private citizens.

1969UC completed successfully its first university-wide capital fund campaign. The Sesquicentennial Campaign, led by Chairman William H. Zimmer, raised $34 million in private support.

1971$1,250,000 was given by Rose Wolfson through the Erwin S. and Rose F. Wolfson Foundation to build the Erwin S. Wolfson Center for Environmental Design, a part of the College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning.

1972Dr. George Rieveschl, Jr., founded the Charles McMicken Society to encourage and recognize annual gifts to UC of $1000 or more. From the original 14 donor members, the society now recognizes over 2000 donors each year.

1975As the university anticipated affiliation with the State of Ohio, Dr. Rieveschl left his position as UC’s research vice president and became the founding chairman of the University of Cincinnati Foundation. Other Founding Trustees were: R. Amor Reiter, Harold D. Riemeier, John W. Pease, William G. Baetz, Chase M. Davies, Lloyd Whitesell, Robert S. Goebel, Mrs. Mark (Joni) Herschede, Russell C. Myers, H. Jerome Berns, Dean P. Fite. Rieveschl was succeeded as Board Chairman by Joni Herschede, 1981-1985; William J. Parchman, 1986; Theodore H. Emmerich, Jr., 1987-1992; and, Reuven J. Katz, 1993-2001, James C. Kautz, 2002-2005; Jeffrey P. Williams, 2005-2008, Steven A. Wilson, 2008 to 2013, Robert L. Fealy, 2014 – present.

2000Since the foundation was formed, three other university-wide campaigns have been conducted. The Centers of Excellence Campaign (1980-1984) raised $53 million. The Continuum Campaign (1985-1987) raised $8 million. The “Campaign for The University of Cincinnati” ended successfully on June 30, 2000 with a total of $328.9 million committed.

2007The University of Cincinnati approves a goal of $800 million for its capital campaign to be launched in 2008.

2008The University of Cincinnati Board of Trustees approves the Proudly Cincinnati Capital Campaign Goal be increased to $1 billion.

2009In June, The University of Cincinnati Foundation celebrated the “Halfway” point in the Proudly Cincinnati Campaign by exceeding $500,000,000 in donations.

2010The University of Cincinnati achieved the largest enrollment in UC history with over 41,350 students on all campuses, for the autumn quarter.

2011The University of Cincinnati Foundation reached the $755 million mark of the $1 billion Proudly Cincinnati Campaign, March 31.

2013Proudly Cincinnati reached its end on June 30, 2013 with more than $1.09 billion raised in private support from 100,672 donors.

2014The University of Cincinnati (UC) Foundation surpassed its fundraising goal of $125 million, raising in excess of $170 million in private support for the university.

2015Integrated UC Health Foundation into UC Foundation. UC Cancer Institute landed three seven-figure gifts. UC Faculty Staff Campaign set new record by raising nearly $14 million to support UC’s people and programs.
