LOUISVILLE
Detroit may not be a glorifi ed city, but much of its culture seems to revolve around these teams and the loyal fan base that follows them.
Are you a Cubs fan or a Sox fan? The answer to this question can affect the relationship between you and your other Chicago peer: That is serious business.

Noâ Clevelandâ sportsâ teamâ hasâwonâ aâ championshipâ sinceâ 1964.â Theâconstantâ heartbreaksâ areâ soâ intenseâthatâtheâlowestâmomentsâhaveâspecifiâcânames:âTheâDrive,âTheâShot,âRedâRightâ88,âGameâSevenâwithâJoseâMesa,âTheâFumbleâandânow,âTheâDecision.â
SoâwhatâcanâpossiblyâbeâgoodâaboutâClevelandâsports?âItâisâtheâfans.âNoâcityâhasâ greaterâ fansâ thanâ Cleveland,â pe-riod.âAfterâallâofâthisâheartbreak,âtheyâkeepâcomingâback.
Clevelandâ fansâ areâ kindâ ofâ aâstrangeâ fraternity.â Allâ ofâ theâ disap-pointmentsâhaveâbroughtâusâtogetherâasâaâcity.âAnyoneâinâtheâareaâimmedi-atelyâ knowsâ theâ namesâ ofâ thoseâ hor-ribleâmoments,âandâthatâsâjustâhowâitâisâinâCleveland.âButâweâalsoâtakeâprideâinâtheâblue-collarânatureâofâourâsportsâteams.ââ
Weâ areâ notâ Newâ York,â Miamiâ orâLosâAngelesâwhereâtheâstarsâallâcomeâtoâplay,âandâeverythingâisâaboutâmon-eyâandâfame.âWeâareâCleveland,âwhereâweâ respectâ andâ appreciateâ playersâ
broughtâupâasâdraftedâtalentâthroughâourâorganizationalâsystems.âWeâwantâtoâwatchâaâteamâbuildâfromâtheâgroundâup,âandâthisâmoreâoftenâreliesâonâteam-work,â determinationâ andâ playingâsmartâthanâpureâstarâpower.ââ
Thisâ wasâ demonstratedâ thisâ pastâyearâ withâ theâ departureâ ofâ LebronâJamesâ fromâ theâ Cavaliersâ ofâ theâ Na-tionalâ Basketballâ Association.â TheâCavsâareâawfulâthisâyear,âbutâitâisâmuchâmoreâ funâ andâ rewardingâ toâ watchâtheâ youngâ andâ inexperiencedâ play-ersâworkâandâgrowâtogetherâthanâoneâmanâplayâbasketballâwhileâtheârestâjustâstandâaround.â
Youngâ playersâ likeâ Christianâ Ey-engaâ andâ Ramonâ Sessionsâ defiânitelyâhaveâsteppedâinâandâbroughtâaânewâex-citementâtoâtheâgames.âYes,âtheâresultsâareânormallyâlossesâforânow,âbutâIâcanâtâhelpâbutâgetâexcitedâaboutâwhereâthisâyoungâ groupâ ofâ playersâ withâ theâ ad-ditionâofâmanyâfutureâdraftâpicksâwillâtakeâthisâteamâinâtheânextâfiâveâyears.
TheâIndiansâareâanotherâteamâthatâdescribesâtheâessenceâofâwhatâitâmeansâtoâbeâaâClevelandâsportsâfan.âTheâteamâhadâ aâ greatâ stretchâ inâ theâ 1990sâ inâMajorâ Leagueâ Baseballâ asâ perennialâAmericanâ Leagueâ Centralâ Divisionâchampions,âandâevenâmadeâtheâWorldâSeriesâtwiceâinâaâspanâofâthreeâyears.âThoseâTribeâteamsâhadâyoung,âhome-grownâ starsâ fiâllingâ theâ lineup,â andâthatâsâstillâtrueâtodayâforâtheâorganiza-tionâ despiteâ theirâ strugglesâ overâ theâpastâfewâseasons.â
Inâ Cleveland,â weâ believeâ thatâ thisâstyleâ ofâ playerâ developmentâ bringsâmoreâ ofâ aâ feelingâ ofâ purityâ toâ theâgame.âBaseballâandâmanyâofâitsâstarsâhaveâbeenâsoâdegradedâbyâtheâsteroidâissue,âandâitâjustâfeelsâniceâtoâwatchâaâteamâ andâ feelâ noâ guiltâ orâ uneasinessâaboutâit.
Lastâ butâ notâ leastâ inâ myâ explana-tionâofâClevelandâsportsâfandomâisâtheâcrownâjewelâofâClevelandâsâsports:âtheâBrowns.âTheâBrownsâinâtheâNationalâFootballâ Leagueâ representâ theâ bestâandâtheâworstâofâthisâcityâsâsportsâhis-tory.âTheâteamâhasâneverâbeenâtoâaâSu-perâBowl,âlastâwinningâtheâNFLâcrownâinâ1964âbeforeâthatâgameâevenâexisted.â
Andâtoâmakeâitâworse,âformerâown-erâArtâModellâmovedâtheâfranchiseâtoâBaltimoreâtoâbecomeâtheâRavens,âandâthatâteamâquicklyâwonâaâSuperâBowlâtitle.
Sinceâ theâ Brownsââ returnâ toâ theâshoreâ ofâ Lakeâ Erieâ inâ 1999,â theâ teamâhasâ failedâ toâ regainâ muchâ strengthâwithâcoachesârotatingâoutânearlyâeveryâotherâ year.â Withâ onlyâ aâ fewâ winningâseasonsâthisâmillennium,âtheâBrownsâhaveâ beenâ awfulâ toâ watch,â butâ thereâareâBrownsâbackersâallâoverâtheâglobeâinâ surprisingâ numbers.â Peopleâ justâcontinueâ toâ comeâ watchâ thisâ team,âevenâinâitsâtoughestâofâtimes.
ItâisâclearâthatâtheâdisappointmentâofâthisâNortheastâOhioâtraditionâbuildsâcharacterâforâyoungâfans,âandâthereâisâaâbrotherhoodâamongstâClevelandersâunmatchedâbyâanyâotherâcity.â
