    Why study at Dundee?

TransformationWe are an established university with a progressive anddynamic outlook. Never complacent, we constantly striveto build on our achievements: investing in excellent facilities, pushing the boundaries of research and developing new waysof using e-learning.

The University of Dundee is actively pursuing a strategy toexcel in research and teaching and to dev elop a 21st centurycampus for our students and staff to live and work in.

The landscape of Dundee city centre has bee n transformedwith our highly-praised 200m campus redevelopment. This has included the construction of brand new energyefficient teaching buildings with the most advanced teaching

technologies, fantastic ensuite student accommodationwith access to what the BBC called a superfast fibre-opticbroadband network, extension of the Institute of Sport andExercise (ise) and Main Library, and culminating in the creationof the Campus Green, providing a beautiful space for studentsand staff to relax and enjoy campus life.

Campus communityWe enjoy an unrivalled position in the centre of Dundee, closeto shops, theatre and transport links and with outstandingviews over the River Tay.

The Virgin Guide to British Universities 2012 described Dundeeas a traditional, premier-league university, but unusuallyrelaxed and friendly, and the city itself has been describedas the biggest village in Scotland because of the warm andfriendly community spirit.

With 3,000 staff and nearly 18,000 undergraduate andpostgraduate students coming to the University of Dundeefrom all over the UK, Europe and beyond, we have a trulywelcoming and diverse campus c ommunity.

InnovationAt Dundee we are always moving forward. Our academicstaff make advanced use of e-learning methods to supportand enhance their teaching. Most of our modules are

supported online by our virtual learning environmentcalled My Dundee, and many use techniques such asonline discussions, e-assessment, video clips and podcaststo enhance student learning.

The University has recently been named one of the worldstop 3 workplaces in an international poll of scientists, and Professor Sir Philip Cohen from our College of LifeSciences, has been named among the 100 most importantpeople in British science by The Times. His work on proteinphosphorylation a process that controls how cells behave has improved our understanding of cancer and other diseases.

Our Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification wasawarded the Queens Anniversary Prize for Higher andFurther Education in 2013.

Ranked in the Worlds Top 200Universitiesby the Times HigherEducation World UniversityRankings 2013/14.

What our students thinkIn the most recent National Student Survey(2013), over 90% of our students in thefollowing subjects were satisfied withthe quality of their course: accounting, economics, education, English, geography, history, mathematics, mechanicalengineering, medicine, politics, psychology, philosophy. Dentistry and biologicalsciences even scored 100%!

As soon as I walked ontothe campus at Dundee,

I knew instantly that this was theuniversity I wanted to go to. Thestaff were so friendly, enthusiasticand helpful and the facilities werefantastic. These were some of themany factors that set my decisionin stone. I knew studying at thisuniversity for the next four yearswould be the best decision I couldever make. So far I dont regreta thing.

Green buildingsThe Dalhousie Building won the 2008 GreenGown Award for Energy and Water Efficiency. This 15 million building was designed so thatwe could utilise the low grade heat from ourCombined Heat and Power (CHP) plant. It alsouses solar shading, heat recovery systems, intelligent lighting and water controls. In2007, the Queen Mother Building was HighlyCommended in the Green Gown AwardSustainable Construction Category. We have anongoing maintenance programme to updatelighting, fit new sensors, install more insulationand fit A rated energy goods into buildings.

Green commitmentWherever possible, we communicate with ourapplicants via email and most of our marketinginformation is available online. This prospectuswas printed on paper from sustainable sources.

All our IT Suites print double-sided and userecycled paper. You will find recycling points in thecourtyards of our residences, around the campus, and the City Council supplies most privateaccommodation with recycling bins. There are over1,800 paper recycling bins across the city campusand recycling figures have risen to over 60%.The University and the City are working hard toincrease recycling and reduce landfill waste.

Recycling and wasteIn 2012 we were awarded funding to install 10Big Belly bins, which have solar powered builtin compactors, which allows bins to take 7-8times more rubbish and reduces the amountof collections we need to make. In February2013 we were the first university in Scotland toinstall reverse vending machines on our maincampus. Vouchers are issued for plastic bottlesand drinks cans which can be redeemed in ourcampus shops. During term time we also operatea freeshop where students can pick up and swapitems rather than buy new.

Green savingsThe University was the first in Scotland to havea Combined Heat and Power plant in 1996. It

works so well we are exempt from paying ClimateChange Levy. We are working with our BotanicGardens on a tree planting scheme to reduce theimpact of our carbon footprint. The Universityhas signed up for the Carbon ManagementProgramme committing us to producing a 5-yearplan on climate change/carbon reduction.

FairtradeIn 2008, the University of Dundee was grantedFairtrade status by the Fairtrade Foundation. The University and the Students Union workhard to supply and stock Fairtrade-approvedgoods wherever possible and also run events tosupport Fairtrade Fortnight annually. The City ofDundee was the first Scottish city to be nameda Fairtrade city in 2004, to reflect the highnumber of retail and catering outlets supplyingfairly traded goods.

BiodiversityOur Botanic Garden is set in 9.5 hectares, just overa mile from the city campus near the banks of theRiver Tay. It features many species of indigenousBritish plants as well as representative collectionsof important plants from all the continents of theworld. To help increase biodiversity on campuswe sowed a woodland shade mix of British nativeplants under trees near the Main Library in 2009and the area is gradually improving with age.

The decision on which university to apply for is one of the mostmportant youll ever have to make. In 2012 & 2013 we wereranked number 1 in Scotland in the Times Higher EducationStudent Experience survey and, while the opinions of our studentss a really good indication that were a great place to study,we dont want you to just take their word for it.

So wouldnt it be brilliant if you had a chance to actually try outa university first?

This was an opportunity we offered future undergraduates earlierthis year by asking them to give the University of Dundee a test

drive themselves. Theyd be able to look at everything they wantedto and ask anything they wanted to know about us. Not only that, theyd be filming, tweeting, posting and making sure that youcould see and experience everything they did you could evenmake suggestions about where they could go on your behalf which is kind of like you giving us a test drive too.

So, why not visit www.dundee.ac.uk/testdrive to see whatthey did and find out how they rated us?

Visit daysf you also want to come and experience Dundee for yourself then our organised visitsare an excellent way for you to see the University before you apply. You will be ableto take a tour around all the Universitys facilities, including the Institute of Sport andExercise (ise), the Students Union (DUSA), library and University accommodation. Its alsoa great opportunity to speak to current students and academic staff about the coursesyou are interested in. Everyone is welcome to attend including school students, collegestudents, parents, teachers and careers advisers.

    Making your application

For all full-time higher education courses at universities and collegesn the UK, students must apply online via UCAS. Our applicationcalendar on page 140 lists all the key dates to be considered whenapplying to university.

How your application is dealt withOnce we receive your application from UCAS it will be assessed by twomembers of staff. To ensure our selection is transparent, consistent andfair you may not receive a decision from us until after the 1st February. This is to ensure we consider all applications received by the UCASdeadline equally.

We carefully consider all aspects of your application including yourqualifications, personal statement and academic reference beforemaking a decision about whether to offer you a place or invite you

for interview. We inform UCAS of our decision and UCAS passes thisnformation onto you, the applicant, v ia UCAS Track.

All applications received by the appropriate deadlines (October 15for Medicine and Dentistry, January 15 for all other applications) willbe given equal treatment. Any applications received after these dateswill be treated as late and may not be considered.

    Interviews, portfolios & selection tests

Entry informationOn each course page, Level 1 entry requirements are given forthe standard qualifications held by the majority of applicants(see table on page 36). Where relevant, Level 2 entry requirementsare also given under the heading Advanced Entry (to Level 2).For most courses, applicants with A-Levels should considerapplying for Advanced Entry (to Level 2) as this offers the besttransition from A-Level courses.

For most subjects the prospectus states the minimum andtypical entry requirements. Applications received by the UCASdeadline and which already meet or are predicted to meet theminimum entry requirements will be given equal consideration bythe admissions selectors, and having a strong personal statementand academic reference will increase your chances of being made

an offer of a place. In addition, we also take contextual factorsinto consideration when making admissions decisions. However, please note that the University offers a wide range of degreeprogrammes with some having a higher level of competition forplaces than others. For many programmes the level of demandmay be such that offers made will be around the typical ratherthan the minimum level.

    (c) Highers achieved at Grade C or below in one year of the SeniorPhase will be considered if re-sat the following year.

    (d) Medicine and dentistry normally require 5 academic courses(Highers and/or Advanced Highers) to be taken at one sitting. We require five programmes of study to demonstrate bothbreadth and volume and therefore ability to cope with theacademic rigour of Medical School. However, Highers taken inS4 will gain credit and we will not disadvantage those unableto sit 5 subjects in one sitting as a result of a schools policy.

The University of Dundee is keen to continue considering bothAdvanced Highers and the Scottish Baccalaureate. These SCQFLevel 7 qualifications offer an excellent foundation in the moreindependent approach to study that is offered at degree level.Dundee is keen to expose each student to the academic challenge

    Why study at Dundee?

The award-winning staff in the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification (CAHID)are amongst the most experienced in the UK in the fields of human identification, forensic anthropology, craniofacial identification and the study of the human body. The core remit of the Centre is the study of anatomy and staff deliver high qualityanatomy teaching at all levels, via whole body dissection which allows students todevelop a sound knowledge of the human body.

The Centre was awarded a prestigious Queens Anniversary Prize for Higher Educationin November 2013. Presented in recognition of world class excellence, the QueensAnniversary Prizes are among the most highly-regarded awards for the UKsuniversities and colleges.

We are the only UK university to offer dissection using Thiel embalmed cadaversand our students have access to rare skeletal collections and a new state-of-the-artmortuary and anatomy laboratory, as well as having the opportunity to review forensiccase work undertaken by CAHID staff.

We offer two Honours degree programmes BSc Anatomical Sciences and BScForensic Anthropology.

    Anatomical Sciences

Anatomy is the relationship between structure and function in the human body andranges from gross anatomy to the cellular and molecular levels. A major feature ofour degree programmes is the emphasis on hands-on practical human anatomy.

    Forensic Anthropology

Forensic anthropology serves the investigative and judicial c ommunities by analysinghuman remains for medico-legal purposes. It is a specialised area of science thatrequires detailed anatomical and osteological training. Being able to assign a nameto the deceased is critical to the successful outcome of all legal investigations, andthis becomes increasingly complex as the body passes through the various transitionalphases of decomposition. Forensic anthropology has adopted a pivotal role in bothUK and international investigations being core to issues of repatriation, mass disastersand war crimes.

    Employability

Previous graduates in anatomy have gone on to pursue careers in biomedical research, hospital laboratories and medical education, while many of our forensic anthropologygraduates have pursued careers in scene of crime analysis, forensic science, humanbiology and osteological research. Some graduates from both disciplines have chosento enter a degree in medicine or dentistry and have found that the skills they haveacquired stand them in good stead, particularly with regards to surgery, radiology, paediatrics, gerontology and orthopaedics.

    Teaching and Assessment

Our programmes in Anatomical Sciences and Forensic Anthropology share commoncore modules in Levels 1 and 2 from the College of Life Sciences. From Level 3onwards you will follow specialised modules for BSc Anatomical Sciences or BScForensic Anthropology within the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification(CAHID). The Level 1 and 2 curriculum provides a general introduction to the lifesciences through an integrated programme of lectures, tutorials, practical work andfield excursions. Further information about this curriculum is given in the Biologicaland Biomedical Sciences overview on page 60.

Our Honours degrees are also available as 3 year options for applicants who alreadyhave appropriate qualifications at Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF)level 7 - the equivalent of the A2 year of A-Levels or the Scottish Baccalaureate. Tobenefit from the best academic progression, applicants with these qualifications willbe made offers for the 3 year Honours degree and will start the programme at SCQF8 (Level 2).

    What our graduates say

The Anatomical Sciences programme was a fascinatingarea to study. The lecturers presented the material in an

engaging way that allowed the core concepts and ideas to begrasped quickly. While the subject is challenging thefriendliness and approachability of the teaching staff made itsimple to contact them with anything relating to the courseand help was always at hand. I have gained a great deal frommy time studying Anatomical Sciences that will prepare mewell for a career in science.

Scott Haston graduated in 2013 with BSc (Hons)Anatomical Sciences

Studying Forensic Anthropology at Dundee offered theinvaluable opportunity to learn from teaching staff with

international reputations within a working departmentactively involved in forensic case work and world-leadingmultidisciplinary research and I felt privileged to be selected asone of a small number of students to undertake the course.

Joanne Bristow graduated in 2010 with BSc (Hons)Forensic Anthropology

    Why study at Dundee?

Architecture at Dundee has a strong studio culture and a teaching programme whichembeds the design studio at the heart of all teaching. Along with the disciplines ofplanning, geography and environmental science, architecture is part of the Schoolof the Environment.

    We have three primary concerns:

    1. The creation of responsive and sustainable architecture. One where beauty andmeaning are expressed through a clear understanding of the means by which it ismade and functions, serving the needs of individuals and expressing the culturalaspirations of society.

    2. The teaching of c onstruction, structures, material grammar and environmentaldesign is regarded as central to design teaching.

    3. The act of imagination which transforms the functional and material elementsin architecture such that it may be discussed as communicable art.

We aim to educate resourceful and adaptable architects who are able to respondcreatively and responsibly to the demands of a complex and changing profession. We foster a spirit of independent enquiry and individual enterprise. This will beenriched by on-going research, all of which will give the students an understandingof the theory and purpose of the best design practice and the self-confidence toparticipate in it.

At various stages in the 5 year programme students are offered the opportunity totake part in study visits organised as an integrated part of the course work.

    Recent study visits hav
