Program facts and licensure Masters in Education High-Incidence Disabilities (Adaptive) Designed to help prepare you to engage with individuals who have mild-to-moderate special needs including learning disabilities, behavioral disorders, and autism. Notes on licensure All licensure programs offered by KUs School of Education are nationally (NCATE) and Kansas State accredited, and widely accepted for licensure/certification throughout the U.S. Not designed for initial teacher licensure Our KU Licensure Officer will work 1:1 with you to help you through your states specific requirements8 9. Who chooses this program? Individuals who are looking for the academic excellence of KUs top-ranked special education program combined with the flexibility of an online format. Teachers with initial licensure looking for Masters-level credentials and skills to help them transition into special education. Teachers who have been hired into a special education teaching role and need a Masters-level program to fulfill hiring requirements. Teachers and other professionals currently working in the special education field who are looking to further their career with the knowledge and credentials a Masters-level program can provide.9 10. A few of the courses youll take Functional Behavioral Assessment, Positive Behavior Support and Classroom Management Provides a problem-solving approach and the framework for teaching and assessment strategies Family and Interprofessional Collaboration in Special Education Designed to provide the knowledge and skills to implement federal and state mandates for special education and related services programs Learning Strategies and Content Mastery for Struggling Learners and Students with High-Incidence Disabilities Course designed to help you identify and implement evidence-based practices to increase the success of students with mild-to-moderate disabilities.10 11. Practicum and Capstone In the program, you will have two practica and a masters capstone project. A word from our Special Education Chair Elizabeth Kozleski Professor Special Education Chair Her work theorizing systems change for equity, inclusive education, and professional learning for urban schools is well recognized nationally and internationally.She was awarded the UNESCO Chair in Inclusive International Research in 2005 and received the TED-Merrill award for her leadership in special education teacher education in 2011.12 13. Department of Special Education Mission To enhance the quality of life of persons with (dis)abilities and their families. Department Highlights Over 50 year history 20 years before the Americans with Disabilities Act was established #2 in published journal articles on Special Education Responsible for over $83 million in state, federal, and foundational grant awards that support: Research Teacher education Professional development13 14. Department of Special Education Since the departments founding over 50 years ago, KU faculty have led the field of Special Education. In 2013, faculty within the department of Special Education have Published 12 books Published 130 articles in Peer-reviewed Journals Written 78 textbook chapters Presented at 247 national and international conferences In addition, the faculty have volunteered for 83 positions on editorial boards and have held 213 leadership roles in professional organizations.14 15.
