University of Massachusetts Amherst Trumpet Studio Audition Repertoire – Spring 2020

Audition repertoire is divided into three sections: 1) etudes 2) solo repertoire and 3) orchestral/wind band excerpts. Etude and solo piece requirements are based on the repertoire for the 2020 ITG Scholarship Competition. For these two sections, audition requirements will vary depending on your age (see below). The excerpts section will be required of all auditioning students, regardless of age. Sections 1 & 2: Etudes & Solo Repertoire

For undergraduate students (or equivalent study) born after February 1, 1997 (age 22 or under on February 1, 2020):

1. T. Charlier: 36 Etudes Transcendantes pour Trompette, Etude #8 (on Bb

trumpet) 2. Richard Lane: Song (C or Bb trumpet)

For graduate students (or equivalent study) born after February 1, 1994 (age 25 or under on February 1, 2020):

1. M. Bitsch: Vingt Etudes, Etude #5 (on C trumpet) 2. J.B. Chance: Credo (C or Bb trumpet)

Section 3: Excerpts

1. Ives: Variations on “America” (cornet 1, to be played on C or Bb trumpet), Rehearsal O – P

2. Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition (preferably on C trumpet) Trumpet 1 excerpts:

Promenade, Beginning – Rehearsal 2 *VI. Samuel Goldenberg und Schmuyle (on piccolo trumpet), Rehearsal 58 – Rehearsal 62

Trumpet 2 excerpts: I. Gnomus, Rehearsal 14 – 5 bars before Rehearsal 15 VII. Limoges-Le Marché, entire movement

3. Mahler: Symphony No. 1 in D major, “Titan” (preferably on C trumpet) Movement 1: 5 bars after Rehearsal 1 – 8 bars before Rehearsal 2 (prepare BOTH trumpet 1 and 2 parts) Movement 1: Rehearsal 3 – 4 bars after Rehearsal 3 (prepare BOTH trumpet 1 and 2 parts) Movement 3: Rehearsal 5 – 6 bars before Rehearsal 8 (prepare BOTH trumpet 1 and 2 parts)
