Health Careers Opportunity Program

• The Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) is a federally funded program granted to the School of Health Professions and Studies (SHPS) by the US Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration.

• HCOP's primary goal is to assist and encourage students from Flint area schools to join the health professions field. As more students from the Flint area schools join health profession programs, graduate and successfully pursue careers in the health professions, diversity among health professionals in Genesee County will improve.

• HCOP has several programs in place to assist Flint area students with the academic and social skills needed to successfully graduate from high school, enroll and graduate from college. We have programs for elementary, middle, high school and college students.

Tutoring

College Tutoring Pre-College TutoringTutoring is a great opportunity to support youth as they develop academically and socially. It is also a time when role modeling is critical. Every adult plays a role in this process and we want to make sure that School of Health Professions and Studies (SHPS) Math/Science tutors are skilled and knowledgeable. Math and Science tutors are offered at McKinley Middle School, Genesee Early College and Classical Academy to provide assistance to students who need it.

Free tutoring is offered in Math, Physics, Anatomy & Physiology I and II, Microbiology, Chemistry, and Spanish.

For the September 2010 school year Flint HCOP tutored students GO FLINT HCOP!!!

How do we do It?

• This has been an amazing year for the Flint-HCOP programs. The impact of these programs in helping students realize their potential of becoming health professionals can be seen in many different ways.
