Each industrial value-added chain, as in the fields of wood-, food- and biotechnology, requires a characterization of materials and an optimization of processes. In order to optimize these processes a closed loop use of the involved materials and a minimization of energy based emissions are aimed. Considering these demands, the teaching program of the Department of Material Sciences and Process Engineering covers basic courses on Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering and Wood Science and Technology, as well as special lectures in these fields. The research work of the Department is reflected in the names of the institutes which are the Institutes of Wood Science and Technology, of Physics and Material Sciences and for Chemical and Energy Engineering. Cross sectional areas are bio-thermodynamics, mass transfer and drying, natural, composite and bio-materials, machining of materials, as well as measuring and methodology.

Sustainable agricultural systems provide food, renewable resources and energy. The environmentally friendly nature of these systems ensures optimal soil and plant health, and promotes animal welfare, biodiversity, an efficient energy flow and nutrient cycle balance. Their further development requires the linkage of soil - plants - animals - engineering - people.

Teaching

The department offers courses on all forest and soil related subjects such as

• Forest Ecology, • Forest Entomology, Forest Pathology and Forest Protection,• Silviculture, • Forest Engineering, • Forest Inventories, and • Soil Science

for the curricula Forestry and Forest Science, and additionally all other BOKU-studies with these subjects, according to the respective curricula.

The courses in the Master studies especially impart the knowledge on the interrelationship between natural sciences, technical sciences and societal demands.

Department of Forest- and Soil SciencesResearch projectSoil water depletion and recharge in beech and spruce stands

Severe flooding in Central Europe in 1997 and 2002 gave reason to investigate the influence of European beech (Fagus sylvatica) and Norway spruce (Picea abies) on the soil water budget of a forested site.During dry spells in summer the mean daily water extraction from the upmost 60 cm of soil(1) was 45% higher under beech than under spruce. The fluctuations of soil water storage(2) were less pronounced under spruce, because the lower water extraction rates of spruce were balanced by a higher canopy interception efficiency.Sprinkling experiments(3) in high intensities (100 und 60 mm*h-1) showed that the infiltration rate and the water absorption capacity of the soil is very high under both species. In comparison to the spruce stand, bigger and faster draining pores seem to determine runoff under beech(4), increasing the speed of interflow but at the same time diminishing the danger of surface runoff.

GEN-AU FUSARIUM: Molecular mechanisms of Fusarium virulence and host plant resistance

Projekt leader: Univ.Prof. DI Dr. Gerhard Adam, Department of Applied Plant Sciences and Plant Biotechnology, Institute of Applied Genetics und Cell Biology (IAGZ)

AbstractGEN-AU pilot project: The Fusarium graminearum fungus attacks grains and corn (maize), producing substances that are poisonous, have hormonal effects (for example, the mycotoxins deoxynivalenol and zearalenon), and can be hazardous to health. Which gene is it that enables the fungus to attack such an unusually large number of host plants? What mechanisms underlie the great resistance of some types of grains? The goal of this project is to find the genes that determine the virulence of the fungus and the chromosomes in grains that are responsible for greater resistance. This could, on the one hand, reveal new ways to combat the fungus, and on the other hand, lead to cultivation of highly resistant plant varieties.

Implementing tree growth models as forest management toolsEU-Forschungsproject (FP5) "Implementing Tree Growth Models as Forest Management Tools" (ITM)Coordinator ITM: Univ.Prof. DI Dr. Hubert Hasenauer, Department of Forest and Soil Sciences, Institute of Forest Growth and Yield Research

AbstractIn Europe there is a strong movement toward uneven-aged forest management based on the general understanding that uneven-aged mixed species stands increase or at least maintain soil fertility, increase biodiversity and improve stand resilience reducing the susceptibility to physical and/or biotic disturbances. The shift from even-aged forest management renders existing yield tables increasingly unreliable. One possibility to forecast yields for uneven-aged mixed-species stands is to develop stand growth models that operate at the individual tree level. Such individual tree growth models have been developed mainly to study stand development in uneven-aged mixed-species stands. Although tree growth models have reached a certain level of developmental maturity, there are still some theoretical areas requiring more research. However, with the majority of model development complete, the time is near for modelers to focus on identifying user related needs and testing the models‘ ability to meet user needs. The objectives of this project are to identify missing research needs and demonstrate that individual tree growth models are a viable alternative for enhancing silvicultural decision making as well as sustainable forest resource management.

The isotope composition of materials is unbiased proof of origin. Within the START project VIRIS at the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences, Vienna, a unique combination of analyses methods are applied to have access to this information in even the smallest sample quantity.

SHEMOS - Shell mobility scenarios 2035

Project leader: Univ.Prof. DI Dr. Gerd Sammer, Department of Landscape, Spatial and Infrastructure Sciences, Institute for Transport Studies (IVe)

AbstractThe dynamic development of the areas surrounding a city, which is demonstrated by a rise in population as well as increased industrial activity, is resulting in a significant surge in transport demand. Furthermore with the EU enlargement to the East and the new members of Czechia, Slovakia, and Hungary the Vienna conurbation has gained a "turning table" function. A merging of the currently still separate trade areas of Vienna, Brno, Bratislava, and Györ can be expected. An adequate transport infrastructure is needed which is capable to deal with both the regional mobility growth as well as with the transregional transport demand in freight and passenger traffic.
