Course Overview As an online learning course, SPAN 402 requires students to practice the language on their own following the guidance of the instructor. Students attend class by logging on to Canvas UNH MyCourses (www.mycourses.unh.edu) and MySpanishLab (www.myspanishlab.com). Students are expected to learn vocabulary and read grammar explanations presented in the textbook before doing assigned exercises on MySpanishLab website. Throughout the course, we will use the technology resources: CaptureSpace (Kaltura) and ZOOM for your video and audio recordings, and our meetings. To provide students with the opportunity to interact with each other and the instructor, the instructor will schedule 5 weekly synchronous (live, in real time) online meetings via ZOOM. You will have a choice of various time-slots for this participation. For full course credit, plan to attend 3 of these meetings. Work schedules should be adjusted to accommodate this course requirement. Students are responsible to read the directions provided in Canvas for the installing, downloading and using of these resources in order to be able to complete the recording assignments. Learning a language in an online setting for 5 weeks requires as much work as learning in a traditional 15 week face-to-face classroom, along with a great amount of discipline. Course Description and Placement The online SPAN 402 course is designed to build a basis for an active command of Spanish basics through the study of fundamental speech patterns, reading and writing, and speaking

and listening activities. The course is designed for students who have taken Spanish 401 or for those who have had fewer than two full years of high school instruction in Spanish (junior high school years are counted as half of a high school year). Students who have received credit for two or more years of high school Spanish or one year of college Spanish cannot receive credit by taking SPAN 401/402. Please note that SPAN 403/503 is the route to complete the foreign language requirement if you have had at least 2 years of Spanish in the past. A student may petition to receive credit for SPAN 401/402 despite two or more years of high school Spanish (or equivalent) if five or more years has elapsed. Keep in mind that this course is NOT designed to be self-spaced. The materials are presented and activities are organized in much the same way as those of face-to-face class. Successful completion of SPAN 401 is a pre-requisite for SPAN 402. In order to continue to SPAN 402 a minimum of D+ is preferred.

Language Requirement University requirements such as the foreign language requirements in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of New Hampshire cannot be fulfilled by courses taken by pass/fail. Students from different universities should check their own institution's policies regarding credit transfer.

Objectives The main objective of this course is to provide instruction in and practice with basic listening, reading, writing and speaking skills that enable students to speak about themselves and their immediate world, about their friends, family and topics of general interest, and to participate in everyday interaction. A second objective of the course is for students to explore similarities and differences between their cultural background and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. By the end of this course, the student will be able to communicate in a variety of verb tenses. In 402 we also reinforce listening and reading skills for basic comprehension.

Content Chapters 6 -12 of textbook Mosaicos will be covered during this five-week summer course. In general, each week there are a couple of grammar points plus topic-based vocabulary will be presented by your instructor using various online resources. You should keep up the materials, as they are presented. You should take a few minutes every day to examine the calendar and learn about a list of assigned activities. Due dates for all assignments are indicated in the weekly calendar. For grammar presentations you will need to watch selected Tutorial videos on MSL (MySpanishLab). It is important that you read grammar explanations of your textbook before watching those videos. You will use the e-book to practice the vocabulary and its pronunciation by listening to audio recordings before attempting the activities for each day on MSL.

Academic Honesty and Plagiarism Honesty is a core value at the University of New Hampshire. This standard pertains to both the written and spoken work. Accordingly, plagiarism or cheating* will not be tolerated and will be handled according to the guidelines stated here: http://www.unh.edu/student-life/academic-honesty-policy To claim to any work that is not entirely your own work is a violation of academic and personal integrity. Consequences may include a failing grade on the assignment in question and may lead to expulsion from the class, reporting to the Dean of CLAS, etc. Plagiarism means presenting someone else’s work (totally or partially) as if it were your own without acknowledging that you are borrowing it. Use of electronic translators or native speakers to write papers also violates the policy on Academic Honesty. * If you have any questions about what constitutes cheating in an online course, please schedule a chat with me via ZOOM

Netiquette Policy Online etiquette is extremely important. We must show respect to one another at all times. Rudeness and disrespect will not be tolerated in this course. Please recognize that communication is rather "flat" online where we cannot see and hear each other. So be cautious when using sarcasm or negative statements. Whenever possible, give constructive criticism and treat others the way you would like to be treated. If at any time you feel that you are being harassed or disrespected in this course, please let the professor know immediately, so that she can assist you. Or access immediately support directly: http://reportit.unh.edu

UNH Summer Academic Calendar and Deadlines You are responsible for dropping the course. Your instructor cannot do this for you. Please check this site for the instructions of dropping the course and tuition refund policy.

Disability Services (http://www.unh.edu/disabilityservices) The University is committed to providing students with documented disabilities equal access to all university programs and facilities.
