Greetings.August guests, (Pro-Chancellor and UNN Councilrepresentatives/members. UNN Vice, DeputyChancellor, Registrar, Keynote Speaker andChairman), Fellow Lions and Lionesses and ourDistinguished Friends from all walks of life andvarious parts of the world:

It is with inestimable pleasure, honor and pridethat I welcome all of you to the 7th annualconvention of our renowned organization, theUniversity of Nigeria Alumni Association of theUnited States of America (UNN-USA). We aremeeting for the first time in a city located in a stateon the west coast of America - California – thegolden state. Blazing this path became possiblebecause Dr Paul Amuchie accepted the gauntletof hosting a convention (without a bona fidechapter). Offering him the convention hostingmantle, was a manifestation of our confidence inhis organizational ability. On his part, he knew hehad able lieutenants and a reliable parent body toback him up. I wish to take this opportunity tothank Dr Amuchie, and his very supportive anddedicated cadre of assistants including Mr. ChikeNweke etc, who pooled their creativity, energy andresources together to make this convention inCalifornia possible. We trusted you with thismission; your accomplishments have made usproud.I wish to now pivot towards our distinguishedkeynote speaker, Dr Orjiakor.Wewelcome and arevery proud of him. He is an alumnus of laudableaccomplishments. When this lion roars from hisambassadorial plenipotentiary perch, the wholeworld listens. Yes, this internationally renownedintellectual and diplomat is a product of our almamater, a university that used to enjoy enviableacademic credentials and world renown. Our association with the university is the link that

binds us together and it is the reason that we areall gathered at this occasion. Our deep-seateddesire is to do all in our power to ensure that itcontinues to occupy a prominent and permanentposition in the firmament of institutionalacademic stars. It needs all stakeholders holdinghands andworking together to recapture, nurtureand maintain high academic standards in thisinstitution of higher learning. The journey tocoalesce the efforts of the stakeholders – theadministration, faculty, students and veryimportantly, alumni - is embarked on the openingday of any university andmust endure throughoutits life span. That is why it gives me great joy tonote that for the first time after a few years ofdiscordance, we have a full complement of thedifferent arms of our alma mater’s administrationrepresentatives, including the registrar.Significantly, for the first time ever, we have in ourmidst, the Pro-Chancellor of our alma mater, Dr(Sir) Emeka Enejere. Space circumscription doesnot allow me to go into the details of hisexemplary background. Suffice it to say that the

recently appointed Pro-chancellor is also the firstalumnus to hold this strategic position and was astudent union president during his heydays at theuniversity. I wish to seize this opportunity tocongratulate him for making it to the Golden Stateto join us in this annual serious retrospection whichnormally precedes a determined discussion on howtomap out the way forward. It is my intention at thisjuncture to turn my attention to the Vice Chancellor,Professor Batho Okolo and commend him on hisaccomplishments so far as the executive head of ouralma mater. I have not visited the campus recently;but reliable sources of information have indicatedevidence of strong and undeniable face lift of theuniversity infrastructure especially regardingbuildings and the attendant environmental esthetics. He is a well published academic. The last but not ofleast importance in our many legged stakeholders’cast, are our Nigeria and USA Alumni associationconferees/delegates, as well as friends of our beloveduniversity. I thank you for taking time off your busyschedules to help provide the necessary ambiancethat puts the punctuation marks of importance, universality and purposefulness to the deliberationsof these few days.

Past UNN-USA AdministrationAt this juncture, there is need to recognize mypredecessors, Dr. Mike Okoroafor and ProfessorOliver Ibe. Our organization is lucky to have hadthese two passionate, dedicated and selfless leadersat its inception and during its neophyte andformative years. These two leaders may have provento be the difference between our survival andsuccumbing to the same SIDS (“sudden infant deathsyndrome”) that caused the demise of the earlier still-born akin parent body in the USA. Yes, some of youmay not be aware of it, but ours is not the first timea UNN alumni association was inaugurated in theUSA. Now that we have made it through more thanfive years of existence, we should together expressour gratitude to them for piloting the ship of ourorganization through the treacherous first five yearsof embryonic subsistence. Research scientists whoare versed in the investigation of survivability of newbusinesses etc., posit that start-ups that survive thefirst five critical years have promising future and are

positioned to take their permanent place in thefirmament of thriving organizations. We are now insuch an enviable status - thanks to these two leaders.

Current UNN-USA AdministrationThe present UNN-USA administration took over theorganization’s leadership responsibility about oneyear ago. The free and fair presidential electionresulted in a peaceful leadership change at the topand was the first of its kind in the truncated annalsof our association. Unfortunately, this fresh breeze ofpeaceful change also simultaneously ushered in aperiod of uncertainty immediately after the election.Thuswe assumed officewith a smile on our faces butuncomfortable lumps in our throats. The situationposed a difficult challenge because theadministration had to operate short-handed in termsof not having the full complement of its officers onduty. First, the vice president submitted a terse emailsimply declaring that he had quit his office. Problemswith the other two officers - the secretary and thefinancial secretary – then came next. Their issueswere more subtle and comprehensible. Thus, Iempathized with the secretary and the financialsecretary, over the extenuating circumstanceswhichprecluded them from devoting themselves fully totheir willingly accepted volunteer role as officers inour organization. But the resilient, outstandinglyhardworking and dedicated significant othersamong us successfully took up the challenge offilling in the gaps. I am proud of ouraccomplishments (to be enumerated later) despitethe unexpected drawbacks. I wish to thank theimmediate past president, Professor (Dr.) Oliver Ibe ,our public relations officer, Dr.Winny Nweke and ourtreasurer, Jonathan Okpukpara for their unwaveringsupport for current administration. So what did weaccomplish as an organization during this past year? Before I delve into this discussion, I wish to observethat it would be tragic for any organization to hoistatop its administrative echelon, a leader withoutattainable clear-cut mission and objectives while inoffice. In this regard, our objectives/goals werereleased for public consumption at the beginning ofthis administration. Here is an inclusive but notnecessarily exhaustive list of our accomplishmentsduring our first year in office.

Page 7: University of Nigeria Alumni Association - 7th Annual Convention

University of Nigeria (UNN)-USAAlumni and Friends Association | 7th Annual Convention -7-

Accomplishments1. Rejuvenated and reconstituted the Legal andconstitutional/bylaws review, education, financialand fund raising, projects, and convention

committees. The membership, research andpublications committees, as well as the board ofdirectors were reconstituted but remain dormant.

2. Revamped and updated the UNN-USA web site inorder to incooperate current informationtechnology-required enhancements to enablepossible interactive exchanges, as well as provide forweb-based internet option for applicants seekingour proposed scholarship grants.

3. Sourced funds for our scholarship program. TheOkoroafors led the way here. Enough fund has so farbeen generated to make promising the awarding ofapproximately fifty thousand naira per studentscholarship to about five lucky students in theimpending academic year. This “work is in progress”.In this regard, the submissions of the hardworkingeducation committee are being awaited by thegoverning body of UNN-USA.

4. Seeking other financiallymanageable projects likethe plan to inject updated/ cutting edge bestpractices’ into the clinical pharmacy aspect of UNNpharmacy department curriculum.

5. Collaborated financially with UNCOMMA(university of Nigeria college of medicine medicalassociation) to fund the infusion of audio visual aids’technology into the recently constructed lecture hallin the new college of medicine campus near Enugu.

6. Revamped monthly teleconference method ofoperation, including timemanagement andminutes'reportage. There is still more work to be done in thissphere.

7. The reconstituted legal/bylaws/constitutionalreview committee completed and submitted theirwork on the bylaws revision mandate from thegoverning body of UNN-USA.

8. The convention committee with the help of UNN-USA governing body is set to convene one of themost memorable and successful conventions in theshort history of our association – a first one on thewest coast of the USA..

9. Fund-raising/financial as well as the projectscommittees, got a belated start as it took a while toidentify a chairperson for each group, It is howeverour hope that their presentation at the conventionwill be insightful and helpful in our bid to raisemorefunds and identify executable useful andimmediately impactful UNN-based projects.

10. Sought to resurrect the UNN-USA New Yorkchapter – thanks to Gladys Ozoude. Also, indicationsare that a new California chapter may be“chartered”in Los Angeles before the end of this convention -thus extending our reach and presence nationwide.

11. Successfully worked to reopen communicationchannels and re-establish our relationships with theUNN top administrators including the ViceChancellor and for the first time, the Pro-Chancellor.

Page 8: University of Nigeria Alumni Association - 7th Annual Convention

I believe the registrar is also in attendance.

Reflections on universal alumni concerns. The one year record of our association includes somechallenges as the list below shows.1. Membership – This is of grave concern. UNNalumni in the United States number in the hundredsbut total UNN-USA official membership figure is inthe tens and definitely under one hundred especiallythe financial members. What is the plan to enhancethemembership roster? Here, we need help fromouradministrators at home and leaders present in theUSA. Graduates with unacceptable or blightedundergraduate experience develop no upliftingemotional ties to the university and fellow alumniwhen they leave the institution. Many areas ofimprovement are indicated in this sphere but themost often quoted is the prevailing dehumanizingconditions of toilet facilities. Secondly, there used tobe acceptably well maintained cafeterias where all ofus inexorably met at least three times every day tohobnob and in the process develop a sense of spiritde corps. These refectories are now things of thepast.2. Transcript Issues – Graduates continue to bemoantheir inability to smoothly obtain their transcripts ona timely basis. This ugly predicament sometimesleads to loss of job or graduate school admissionopportunities. This problem did not exist in theearlier days of our almamater. As long as it persists itwill be difficult, for obvious reasons, to recruit newand younger alumni into our ranks.3. Internal UNN/USA dynamics – there is need for arenewed focus on our mission and modus operandiregarding internal deliberations, decision makingand implementation of chosen projects. There isneed to embed the principles of democraticgovernancewhere transparency, acknowledgementof majority rule while respecting minority opinion, informs and guides our method of operation.4. Relationship between the different pillars ofsupport of our almamater – theworking relationshipbetween the different administrative entities, faculty, staff , students and of necessity, the alumniassociationsmust be streamlined and synchronizedso that none works against or underutilizes theothers when there is need for all to operate in

tandem in order to accomplish a specified goal. Thepresent stand-off regarding financial relationshipbetween UNAA and UNN-USA must be resolved assoon as possible.

Way ForwardGoing forward, the operational and relationshipcankerworms spotlighted above should beconfronted and expunged from our organization’sfabric and interrelationships’ paradigms. This isnecessary if wemust grow in strength and attain ourgoals without any misgivings and/or mutualsuspicion. I believe that we are a committed andresilient group who want to give back to theinstitution that nurtured us into becomingsuccessful, globally competitive, educated andimportant contributing community members. Thefuture is full of promise. It is up to us to frugallyharness the bountiful human (alumni) as well asother relevant resources at our disposal. This will helpus reach our goal of restoring our alma mater to itsvaunted pinnacle of academic excellence. Finally,UNN is a resilient institution, and is locatedwithin theterritorial ambit of an equally indomitable people.Only such a steely institution, can endure the rape, rampage and ravages it experienced during theNigerian/Biafran civil war, and continue to battle tohold its own among comparable institutions ofhigher learning. So let us exercise patience and at thesame time commend ourselves for ourresourcefulness and positive attitude.Thank you for your attention. I hope the conventionis rewarding and enjoyable and I wish all of you a safereturn to whence you came from to join us on thisoccasion.Augustine E. Okocha PhD

Lions and Lionesses,

On behalf of the 14th Governing Council of theUniversity of Nigeria, Nsukka and the graduatesof 50 years of your Alma Mater, that citadel ofhigher learning in the valley of the green hills ofNsukka, with a natural ambiance, second to nonefor contemplation and the search of knowledge,I bring you fraternal greetings.

It gives me great pleasure to lead a delegationrepresenting the Governing Council andManagement of the University of Nigeria,Nsukka to the 7th Conference of UNN Alumni,USA holding at the city of Los Angeles, CaliforniafromOctober 17 – 20, 2013.

It is on record that UNNAdministration has in thepast attended some of your conferences, butcertainly, not the Governing Council. This isperhaps the first time in the history of theactivities of UNN Alumnus USA that the Councilof your Alma Mater is directly participating.

Letme crave your indulgence to inform you thatsince the Governing Council of 21 FederalUniversities was inaugurated at the NationalUniversities Commission on April 9, 2013 thisCouncil has held 3 formalmeetings and I have asPro-Chancellor and Chairman attended 2National Executive Committee meetings on the

UNN National Alumni Association hosted byLagos and Owerri Chapters of our AlumniAssociation. The reason for engaging the AlumniAssociation is not farfetched. Any University thatdoes not enter into a strategic partnership withthe body of its graduates, “e don miss road bethat”, in FelaAnikulapospeakesse.

The Council and Management delegation ofyour Alma Mater to your Los Angeles 2013Conference has come to engage you, in a frankand robust conversation, on what together wecan do for the Risorgimento of our AlmaMater, the Varsity of Nigeria; and to restorethe“restorer of human dignity”, to resume itsmarch of destiny, to restore the dignity ofman inNigeria, Africa and the world.

I most sincerely welcome all of us and wish usfruitful deliberations.

Sir, Dr. EmekaEnejerePro-Chancellor/ChairmanGoverning CouncilUniversity of NigeriaNsukka.

Emeka Enejere, a 69 year-old Political Scientist, had hiselementary school education partly at St. Andrew’s (CMS)School in his town, Ibagwa-Aka, in Enugu State of Nigeria, from 1950-54 and finished at St. Paul’s Practising School,Awka between 1955-57. He passed his First SchoolLeaving Certificate with Distinction and passed entranceexaminations to several Secondary Schools, but chose togo to OkongwuMemorial Grammar School, Nnewi for hisSecondary School education because the college wasbuilt in honour of the 2nd Igbo medical doctor, NnoduOkongwu, who died in the United States of America andabout whose death, the great Zik, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, then student in United States had sent home a“celebratedtelegram”to break the news of his demise to his people inNigeria.

At Okongwo Memorial Grammar School, Nnewi, Emekawas one of the youngest in the class that gainedadmission in 1958. He was active in athletics, footballthroughout his college years and also actively participatedin the Debating Society, which was compulsory for allstudents of the College. In 1962, his last year at College, hewas elected President of the Debating Society, the onlyposition that all students of the College participated inchoosing its leadership, unlike College Prefects that wereappointed by the College Administration and tutors.

Also, in his final year in 1962, Emeka sat for a number ofentrance examinations to enable him be admitted to a 2-year Higher School – post Secondary School training thatwas the only window for a 3-year direct entry programmeto university education in Nigeria, at the time. He gainedadmission to a number of High Schools, but gave up theopportunity to risk thegamble ofwriting exam in 1963 togain admission into a 4-year degree program in aNigerian University during the 1964-65 academic session.Emeka had calculated that he could finish one year aheadof his classmates that went through the circuitous routeof first acquiring Higher School Certificate in order to gainadmission for a university degree program. The gamble

at the timewas an experiment in university educationthat only courageous and self-confident kids couldrisk.

Because in a class of 40 for a degree programme, only 4were admitted through entrance exam, conducted forWAEC School Certificate holders. Emekawas one of 4 suchkids admitted in the 1964/65 academic session to readPolitical Science at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

His choice of UNN over the 4 other existing universities inNigeria at the time is instructive. Emeka was entrancedby themission and philosophy of the University of Nigeria,Nsukka as was enunciates by the vision of the FounderFather of the University, one of the foremost NationalistLeaders of Nigeria’s Political Independence Struggle, andfirst civilian Governor-General in 1960, who subsequentlybecame Ceremonial President of the Federal Governmentand Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic ofNigeria in 1963. In the same year, Emeka, a youngSecondary School Certificate leaver, while working asClerk of Court/Exhibit Clerk, to first, a white British Judge,Justice Palmer and later, the Chief Judge of EasternRegion, late Justice Louis Mbanefo, in the High Court ofEnugu Judicial Division of Eastern Nigeria, travelled fromEnugu to Nsukka just to listen to the great Zik deliver hisprophetic public lecture captioned: Tribalism: A pragmaticinstrument for National Unity, at the Princess AlexandraAuditoriumof the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. His groupof Pioneer Secondary School Certificate holders whowereadmitted into degree programmes in 1964 – 65 academicyear, did so well at the end of their program that, theadmission policy into university education in Nigeriachanged for good in favour of Secondary SchoolCertificate holders over Higher School Certificate orAdvanced Level GCE holders.

In his 3rd year, during 1966/67 academic session, Emekawas elected President of the Students Union Governmentof the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He also served

Page 14: University of Nigeria Alumni Association - 7th Annual Convention

-14- University of Nigeria (UNN)-USAAlumni and Friends Association | 7th Annual Convention

simultaneously as National Vice President of NationalUnion of Nigerian Student, then was elected President ofEastern Nigerian Students Union (ENSU), in 1967 – anorganization with Chapters in all institutions of HigherLearning in Eastern region of Nigeria, and also in UK, USAand Europe. This body became the National Union ofBiafran Students (NUBS), at the outbreak of war betweenNigeria and Biafra in July 1967. Emeka remained its leaderand was re-elected in 1969 at the Owerri Convention ofthe NUBS during the war and remained in that capacityuntil the war ended in 1970.

During thewar, Emeka led youth and student delegationsto America, Europe and Africe, that travelled with officialBiafran passport to various countries of theworld in orderto generate support for the Biafran war effort. He alsoserved inside Biafra as Secretary to the PublicEnlightenment Committee of Biafra’s Directorate forPropaganda. He led the Biafran Rangers, a Paramilitarybody that worked to mobilize civilian support for Biafrantroops fighting inwar fronts. The Rangers Football Club ofEnugu took its name after this Pars-military organizationin the immediate post-war years. Emeka served also asSecretary of theMilitary Propaganda Committee of Biafrawith Proffessor O. C. Nwana and Mazi Anyaogu Okonu asChairman and Vice-Chairman respectively. He was amember of the Political Orientation and NationalGuidance Committee of Biafra under Professors ChinuaAchebe and Emmanuel Obiechina as Chairman andSecretary respectively. This Committee was responsiblefor producing the Ahiara Declaration in Biafra.

At the end of the war, Emeka went round NigerianUniversities to lobby for the reopening of theUniversity of Nigera, Nsukka and other institutions ofHigher Learning in the former Eastern region andmade representation toMr.Walker andMr.George, 1stand 2nd Secretaries in the American Embassy, Lagos,Nigeria for a strong case to be made for re-openingUNN because of the role USAID and Michigan StateUniversity had played in founding the University. Heand his generation paid great price for our today, including loss of lives in the war and spending altogether2 extra years in addition to the 30 months the war lastedthat they were not in session before graduating in 1971instead of 1967/68 academic session, despite the warending in January, 1970.

He came for Graduate Studies at Howard University,Washington, D.C. in the fall of 1972 and transferred toGraduate Faculty, New School for Social Research in NewYork in 1973, where he earned hisMasters Degree in 1975

and in 1977 passed his PhD exam with Distinction. Hetaught in some American Colleges and Universities, i.e.Westbury College, westbury, USA,York College of the CityUniversity of New York in Queens and Adelphi Universityin Garden City, New York before returning to his AlmaMater, UNN to teach Political Science from February 1980– December 1992, when he voluntarily retired to go intoprivate business and Consultancy services.

Since 1988 till now, he has served in various capacities, actively participating in national development processesin Nigeria, such as:

* Consultant to the Directorate for Social Mobilization(MAMSER) 1988:

* Deputy Director, Political Education, MAMSER, 1989 – 90while on Sabbatical from theUniversity of Nigeria, Nsukka:

* Special Adviser to Minister of Industry,Dr. Bamanga Tukur 1994 – 95* Special Adviser, Democratic Party of Nigeria(DPN) 1996 – 98;

* Political Consultant to Rivers State Government1999 to the present.

All after voluntarily retiring from UNN in December, 1992

He was appointed Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of theGoverning Council of his Alma Mater, the University ofNigeria, Nsukka on April 9, 2013 for a 4-year tenure, by HisExcellency, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, Presidentand Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of theFederal Republic of Nigeria.

Emeka Enejere is happily married for 39 years to Hon.Justice Pearl Enejere, a Judge of High Court of Engu StateJudiciary, and they have 2 daughters and 2 sons, as well as7 grand-children.

Nigerian National Anthem

American National Anthem

Oh, say! can you see by the dawn's early lightWhat so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming;Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?

And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there:Oh, say! does that star-spangled banner yet waveO'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?

Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,In fully glory reflected now shines in the stream:'Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh, long may it waveO'er the land of the free and the home of the brave! And where is that band who so vauntingly sworeThat the havoc of war and the battle's confusionA home and a country should leave us no more?

Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution! No refuge could save the hireling and slaveFrom the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave:And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth waveO'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.Oh, thus be it ever, when freemen shall standBetween their loved home and the war's desolation!

Bless with victory and peace, may the heav'rescued landPraise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,And this be our motto: "In God is our trust":And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall waveO'er the land of the free and the home of the brave

PROTOCOL

On behalf of University of Nigeria AlumniAssociationworldwide, I ampleased towelcomeall of you to the 7th Annual Convention of theUniversity of Nigeria Alumni and FriendsAssociation (UNN – USA) in Los Angeles.I wish to thank God for journey mercies He hasgranted all of us.

Please let me thank the President AugustineOkocha, his executive, and all the othermembersof UNN – USA Alumni and Friends Associationwho have contributed in oneway or the other tomake the 7th Convention in Los Angelessuccessful. I salute your passion, commitmentand love for the Alumni Association and ourAlma Mater. I want to let you know that weappreciate very much these conventions in USAbecause it affords us in Nigeria opportunity toobtain US VISAS that has continued to enable usattend the conventions and visit USA.

Please permit me to specially thank Oliver Ibe,the immediate past President of UNN – USAAlumni, for painstakingly writing us letters ofinvitation with almost the speed of light.

Let me also welcome all the Lions and Lionessesthat have come from Nigeria and other places.Thank you for coming inspite of the huge costinvolved in seeking for visa and airtickets. I wantto assure you that your coming adds value, volume and support to our members in US.

I welcome warmly the chairman and the keynote speaker Dr. Humphrey Umunna Orjiako. Please allow me to commend UNN Alumni and

Friends Association USA for the hugecontributions they have continued to make toour University. A few years ago they donatedseveral containers of books. They have alsodonated computers. The latest is theestablishment of a scholarship scheme to benefitthe current students of the University. This goalwas achieved at the 6th Convention in Memphiswith the help of UNN - USA Alumni and Friendsfounding President, Dr. Michael Okoroafor who, with the involvement of his company – HeinzCorporation, lead a successful drive to raisesubstantial sum as seed money for thescholarship. The UNN – USA and FriendsAssociation has done somuch, and ever desirousof doingmore for the University, but there is onearea that UNN – USA Alumni and FriendsAssociation have performed dismally, that is, inthe payment of her dues to UNAA. UNN - USA isa fully registered branch of UNAA according toIRS. This registration makes UNN - USAresponsible to UNAA and UNN. One of the

Page 19: University of Nigeria Alumni Association - 7th Annual Convention

University of Nigeria (UNN)-USAAlumni and Friends Association | 7th Annual Convention -19-

requirements for this affiliation is the payment ofacceptable dues to the parent body.

I am aware that, at the inception of UNN – USAand Friends Association some patriotic, altruistic, passionate members like Michael Okoroafor,Oliver Ibe and a few others agreed to payminimal amounts as your dues, which they paidin the first few years. Unfortunately in the last 4years UNN – USA has failed to pay any dues toUNAA. A branch can not unilaterally decide tostop the payment of all legitimate dues andlevies and other obligations to the parent body.I hope that thismatter will be discussed and yourdues and other financial obligations paid beforewe live Los Angeles.

NIGERIAN CONTINGENTBefore we go further, let me at this juncture,Lions and Lionesses, observe that the numbersthat come from Nigeria to UNN-USA conventionare large enough to be accorded somerecognition and status – since they payconvention levies and dinner fees, and since theyalso add value and volume to UNN-USA Alumniand Friends Association, they should not just bespectators only. They ought to have some say, some voting rights. As a matter of fact, in ourmeeting in Owerri and with the Pro-Chancellor,we decided to make UNAA global. We haveInternational branches in US, Camerooms, andUK in the offing. We are looking at a situationwhere after every two or four years we wouldschedule an international convention where allthe branches including those outside Nigeriawould attendwith their delegates to vote and be

voted for into international offices of UNAA. Ihope we can look deeply into this and discus it.

LEADERSHIP - THE UNIVERSITY AND THECOUNCIL.”Some Vice-Chancellors and, in some casescouncils constitute a big stumbling block to theadvancement of the university, and alumniefforts atmobilizing resources for the University”.(Okey Ewurum)“Some University Governing Councils from thechairman tomembers aremost times part of theproblem, they hardly think of planning: theycome unprepared to council meetings –many ofthem become toys in the hands of unscrupulousVice-Chancellor”. (asisi asobie)

Lions and Lionesses, that has changed with theappointment of a new council headed by Dr.Emeka Enejere – the Pro-Chancellor and theChairman of the Governing Council. EmekaEnejere is academically and politically sound, highly committed and focused and so far he doesnot appear at all to be aman that can bemessedup by any form of enticement or inducement.Indeed he was found and appointed by God tocome and right thewrongs, clear themess in ourUniversity, and reshape it in linewith the vision ofour founding fathers. He is a dye-in-the-woolalumni of University of Nigeria. He is verypassionate about our alma mater, and hiscommitment to University of Nigeria and theUniversity of Nigeria Alumni Association ismatchless.

Dr. Emeka Enejere’s appointment and

Page 20: University of Nigeria Alumni Association - 7th Annual Convention

-20- University of Nigeria (UNN)-USAAlumni and Friends Association | 7th Annual Convention

disposition has become the game-changer inour University as crooked paths are being madestraight, just within a few months of his stay inthe saddle. I need not comment further, but tovouch, Sir, that wewill give you our total supportand co-operation in your onerous and arduous, yet fulfilling task of revamping our alma materand bringing, it back on track to its enviablepedestal. Keep the fire burning, Sir, we arebehind you.

Alumni Vice-Chancellor:Our University needs a leader/leadership that hasthe following attributes – A Natural leader, and ateam builder with excellent communicationskills, commercial flair, judgment and the abilityto enthuse, inspire and motivate, with passionand commitment to education, excellence andthe development of people, coupled withpersonal presence at all times, politicallysensitive, andwillingness to take tough decisionswhen and where necessary and above all hemust have great humility. The current council hasso far shown that it understands these attributes, the Alumni Communitywouldwish that it makes

them its creed, abide by them to guide them inthe choice, election and appointment of theNEXT Vice-Chancellor.

On our own part, wemust continue to insist andwork towards the approval of a eminent andqualified alumnus as the next Vice-Chancellor ofour University. We must not shirk thisresponsibility. I urge you all and, indeed, alldistinguished alumni members in high and lowplaces, to use every skill, knowledge and goodwill to achieve this dream. We shall not rest onour oars until this is achieved.

1. Students Admission. The Alumni is still waxing strong, we still hold ourconventions and NEC meetings regularly asscheduled. The turn out is beginning to dwindle. However, the fear is that whether in the nearfuture we would still be able to speak aboutalumni branches existing outside the SouthEastern part of Nigeria. This is because eitherconsciously or unconsciously our University nolonger attracts students from outside the Core-Igbo areas of Nigeria. In the 60s up to the 80sadmission of students was consciously spread allover Nigeria and beyond in order to retain the‘Nigerianess’of the University of Nigeria and thevision of the founding fathers.

The argumentmay be that there are Universitieshere and there, and therefore, prospectivestudents from outside the catchment areas nolonger apply. But I ask; Lions and Lionesses isUniversity education really about proximity, if itis, why do world-Class Universities like Harvard,Oxford, Cambridge and some Universities inSouth Africa still attract the best students from

Page 21: University of Nigeria Alumni Association - 7th Annual Convention

University of Nigeria (UNN)-USAAlumni and Friends Association | 7th Annual Convention -21-

all over theworld uptill today. However I still urgethat the UNN makes conscious effort to admitstudents from all over Nigeria and Africa. Thereason is to sustain the Alumni association andthe spirit and the vision of the founding fatherswho established the University as a citadel oflearning for all black people. I believe you allknow that one of the critical factors consideredin modern ranking of Universities is the diversityof the students and the faculty of a University. You will agree with me that this is one of thereasons UNN still has very poor ranking. With thecurrent mode of admission as evidenced by therecent admissions, our University can neverbecome a world class University. What we havenow will in the near future seriously deplete thenumber of Alumni branches as well as the abilityto ganner funds to support the University. It mayinterest you to note as I have experienced, thatthose from outside the Core-Igbo areas seem tobe more passionate and committed to our almamater and therefore they even give more freely, examples abound.

1. Admission of Alumni Children/wards: -Youmay all wish to know that this has become avery moony issue considering the fact that thecurrent University administration has not beenamendable in this regard. In-fact, the last timewesubmitted a list of qualified prospective Alumnichildren for admission to the University was threeyears ago. Nevertheless, we will not be deterredbecause of the time-tested advantages ofencouraging the Alumni Spirit and tradition, andspread of admission process. There will soon belight at the end of the tunnel.

2. Students Union:- The University of Nigeriahas gone on far sometime now without anelected students Union body. This is because it isconvenient for the administration to run theUniversity without the diverse views that makeup a University. This is anomalous. Our youthscannot be leaders of today if they do not learnthe art of governance. It is my view that theculture of impunity we have in Nigerian societytoday is as a result of the destruction ofdemocratic tenets and ideals. I, therefore, appealto the University authority to encourage andconstitute a students Union through a free andfair election.

2. Certificate And TranscriptLet me use this opportunity to commend theNational Universities Commission for its currentpolicy of no certificate, no graduation policy. However, we still have a back log of unsignedcertificate in our University. Many of ourgraduates have continued to lose jobopportunities because they are unable to present

Page 22: University of Nigeria Alumni Association - 7th Annual Convention

-22- University of Nigeria (UNN)-USAAlumni and Friends Association | 7th Annual Convention

their certificates. Obtaining a TRANSCRIPT is avery daunting task in our University. This iscompounded by the deplorable attitude andconduct of theworkers in the exams and recordsoffices. Lions and Lionesses, it is just very difficultto obtain a transcript in our University, many ofyou may have lost admission chances becauseyou failed to present your transcript on time, because you were unable to obtain yourtranscript from our alma mater. Issues like theseundermine our Alumni movement, becausemany of our graduates, who have had suchdespicable experiences, find no reason at all toassociate with us or the University. Can thesegraduates ever give back to the Alma Mater?

Alumni Relations OfficerI wish to use this platform, to once again urge theVice-Chancellor to appoint an Alumni RelationsOfficer (ARO) who would become a bridgebetween the university and the Alumni; whowould be able to build a lot of goodwill for theUniversity. What the University is attracting nowis infinitesimally small compared to what itwould, if the University makes a conscious effortat cultivating its alumni. An articulate AROwill beinvaluable in this regard. The University, for itsown benefits, needs an (ARO) Alumni RelationsOfficer. The Alumni Relations Officer must beAlumnus/alumnae not below the rank of adeputy registrar.3. The Alumni CentreLions and Lionesses, the quest for theconstruction of a befitting Alumni Centre is oncourse and yielding fruits. Very soon, we will belaying the foundation for this structure. However,I urge you all to come alive to yourresponsibilities by contributing your time andmoney.

4. Students HostelsThe students Hostels in our University, especially,

the toilets are in deplorable conditions. Whilecalling on the University Authority to actimmediately on this matter, it is my take, theAlumni has a great stake here because thestudents are our children and wards. We mustresolve very strongly, even for our own sake, torenovate these hostels.

ALUMNIWEBSITELions and Lionesses, I wish to inform you that wehave created the University of Nigeria AlumniWebsite. This is in support of our belief that ourown Website will stimulate great interest andinteraction amongUNAAmembers in the overallbenefit of the Association and our Alma Mater. The Registration of ourMembers will hence forthbe on line at the minimal cost of N1,000 permember.

The modalities will be worked out immediatelyin the interest of the National body and theBranches. I use this opportunity to call on allgraduates of the University of Nigeria worldwideto register on-line and be part of the biggestalumni movement in Africa. At this juncture, I want to thank each and everyone of you who shelved all other engagementsto come and who have in your prayers, efforts, and advice sustained our great Alumni and theUniversity. I am convinced, by the special graceof God, that we will have fruitful deliberations inLos Angeles.

Thank you.

Dr. Nwanne ChiokeNational President.
