Congress approved $50M federal grant to Charlotte/Tampa for security purposes

CMPD led multi-jurisdictional law enforcement team (emergency and rescue, fire, bomb disposal, personnel for protests, parades, convention facilities)

Secret Service oversaw Charlotte’s security strategy along with Homeland Security and the FBI. Hundreds of police personnel traveled from NC, VA, SC, TN, and GA to support the convention.

Legacy IMPACTS: People’s lives will be better because our community hosted the 2012 Democratic National Convention.

Democratic National Convention 2012

Objective: Use the Convention as a catalyst to help meet some of our greatest challenges and leave legacies of opportunity.

Sustainability: Raised awareness of sustainable best practices (Envision CLT); provided reusable water bottles; expanded Recycling Uptown; launched Bike share program

Healthy Children, Healthy Families: Expanded the number of community gardens; worked with CMS to promote First Lady’s Let’s Move campaign; provided access to SNAP at Transit station and Farmers’ Markets; promoted Carolina Thread Trail/Greenway system to attendees

Youth Employment & Civic Education: Civics Curriculum and Civic engagement activities for youth; expanded the Mayor’s Youth Employment Program; Host Committee College Intern Program; 1000 youth volunteers engaged in Convention and civics related activities

Building Economic Inclusion: Vendor Directory (over 3,000 businesses signed up); provide Business Outreach and Networking Sessions; diverse Spending Goal of 1/3

Since 2005, N.C. has capped the amount passenger air carriers pay on sales tax on jet fuel at $2.5 million, set to Jan 1, 2016.

Without legislative action this session, NC would have had the 5th highest jet fuel tax in country in 2016.

Jet fuel is a business input (similar to diesel for RR and shipping); a cap only benefits one carrier; an exemption makes CLT and NC competitive for air service.

NCGA approved a jet fuel sales tax exemption for passenger air carriers and air couriers in HB117: NC Competes, September 2015.
