JOURNAL POLICY

The Journal of the Royal Historical Society of i,^aeensland publishes papers on the history of both Queensland and Australia and its territories. Papers on topics not of national signifiance and of relevance solely to States other than Queens­land will not normally be considered. The Society welcomes the submission of papers both for presentation to meetings of the Society or for publication in the Journal. Papers presented at meetings will automatically be considered for publication in the Journal, provided they are finished works at the time of their delivery, and not subject to delay or revision. Authors need not be members of the Society.

Manuscripts should be typed on one side of the paper only, using double spacing and ample margins. Papers longer than 5000 words will only be considered in exceptional cases. Maps and photographs for illustrations should accompany the paper. Photographs should be on glossy paper, and preferably of size 15 by 20 centimetres.

Papers should include a list of sources used. References may be indicated by numerical superscripts if desired. The references and notes should appear at the end of the paper, in order of appearance. Excessive numbers of references should be avoided.

It is a condition of publication in the Journal that the paper has not already been published elsewhere. The Society's constitution and rules provide that the original copy of every paper read or given shall become the property of the Society and authors shall not be at. liberty without the consent of the Council of the Society to re-publish them unless the contrary has been so stipulated before-hand.

As the Society is a cultural organisation operating on limited funds, payment is not made for any papers presented or published.

ERRATUM Journal, Vol XI No 4, 1983

In the paper commencing on page 113, "Adoption of the 3 feet 6 inches Gauge for Queensland Railways" by J.W. Knowles, a paragraph was omitted on page 123. After the paragraph ending " . . . soon proved too light." on that page, the following should be read:

"The average savings in earthworks for a conventional 3 ft 6 ins gauge railway compared with one of standard gauge on the same alignment are about 25 per cent, less in difficult country because the volume of material in the slopes of cuttings and embankments is the same. This saving depends however on the dimensions of the 3 ft 6 ins gauge trains being smaller than those on standard gauge. It is possible to build vehicles of much the same dimensions on either gauge, with the result that savings in overall construction cost from use of 3 ft 6 ins are smaller still, especially for light railways with minimum earth­works and drainage."

The first complete paragraph on page 124 (commencing "Light construction . . . . " ) is a duplication.
