Team CaptainsD.J. Lee, Brendan McGuigan, Tim Miller and Tyler Plantier were voted team captains by their peers prior to the start of the 2019 season. Lee, McGuigan and Plantier are each fifth-year players, while Miller is a redshirt sophomore and in his second season as a team captain.

Lee has been a key contributor for the Spiders since his arrival to Richmond, making his 147th career start against Georgia State. This is his third consecutive season being named team captain. The outfielder led the Spiders in stolen bases in each of the last three seasons, totaling 48 in his career, ranking 10th all-time in school history.

McGuigan will be a featured in the weekend rotation to start his redshirt senior season. worked his way into the weekend rotation as a freshman, including working a career-best 8.2 innings against Rhode Island. Tommy John surgery cost McGuigan his sophomore sea-son before returning in 2017. Over the last two seasons, McGuigan has logged 24 appear-ances, 33.1 innings with 30 punchouts.

Miller worked as the Friday night starter a year ago and will return to that role to start this season. Miller is a redshirt sophomore who finished second on the team in innings pitched and strikeouts while earning All-Atlantic 10 Rookie Team honors for his performance. Saw action as a true freshman before an injury playing the outfield shut his season down.

Plantier will be playing his second season for the Spiders after transferring in from UC San Diego. Last season, Plantier led the Spiders with 14 doubles and a team-high .486 slugging percentage. Plantier was an A-10 Player of the Week during May last season.

Preseason PollThe Spiders have been picked to finish in sixth place according to the team’s coaches in this year’s Atlantic 10 preseason poll. Richmond returns six position players and two of three weekend arms from last season’s squad that won 32 games, the highest win total for the Spiders since the 2007 season. In total, 11 letterwinners from last season’s pitching staff will be back for 2019.

Absent ArachnidsRichmond saw the departure of several letterwinners from last season’s 32-24 squad. Most notably being First Team All-Atlantic 10 honorees Vinny Capra and Robbie Baker. Capra was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 20th round of the MLB Draft, playing in short season with Salem-Keizer Volcanoes before earning a promotion for the final two months of the season, playing the Single A Lansing Lugnuts. Baker signed a professional contract after the draft where he shined with the GCL Red Sox, tossing 17.1 innings in 11 games, earning a 1.56 ERA with 17 strikeouts.

Other key departures from last season’s team include Kyle Adams and Daniel Brumbaugh. Adams led the Spiders with six home runs, and drove in 26 runs during his senior season. He also led the Spiders with 42 walks drawn while hitting for a .262 average. Brumbaugh

Senior SpidersThis year’s senior class of 11 players will look to get Richmond back to the A-10 Champi-onship and the NCAA Regionals for the first time since 2003. The class also features four fifth-year seniors, led by its three captains and graduate transfer A.J. Kloehn. Included in this senior class are four pitchers and seven position players.

Key bullpen contributors Layne Looney and Jacob Lamb will be entering their final season in RVA. Looney, a preseason Third Team All-American, earned a 0.60 ERA in 23 appearances in 2018 with eight saves. He struck out 51 hitters in 30.1 innings of work and picked up a win. Lamb was also effective. The southpaw setup man finished 2018 with a 1.09 ERA in 19 appearances and struck out 29 hitters in 24.2 innings. Opposing hitters hit a combined .186 against the two relievers. Matt Olson and Dalton Light were big bullpen arms last season, combining for 21 appearances with Light carrying the bulk of that work.

Positionally, the projected opening day lineup consists of four from the senior class. D.J. Lee, a three-time team captain will start his 147th game as a Spider on opening week-end. Utility-man Sage Bruhl was an everyday starter last season after transferring in from Madison (WI) College. Bruhl will start the season at second base but will see defensive time all around the diamond. Michael Strait is a Georgia-native who will man the outfield for the Spiders during the season. Straight saw action in 13 games last season, adding four RBI and three runs scored in his limited playing time.

Richmond has a pair of senior catchers to manage the talented pitching staff. Kyle Schmidt has been a mainstay for three seasons behind the dish. Schimdt is a .280 career average hitter with 27 extra-base hits and 35 RBI. He’s also earned a .994 fielding percentage and threw out 16 attempted base stealers last season. Kloehn is a superb defensive catcher who will be playing in his first year with Richmond during his final year of eligibility. Kloehn was the every-day catcher for Lafayette for the last two seasons before transferring.

HomecomingsThere are 16 states represented with the 2019 Spider baseball program, with three Spiders hailing from the Peach State. Seniors Michael Strait, Dalton Light and Matt Olson are all from Georgia.

Strait is from Cumming, an hour and a half from Atlanta. A prep star for South Forsyth, Strait led his team to the “Sweet Sixteen” and a final 2014 ranking of the eighth-best baseball team in the state. He was a 2013 and 2014 Georgia All-Regiona 6A Honorable Mention and second team honoree.

Light played his prep career with The Westminster Schools in Atlanta. Light led Westmister to a 27-10 record and a 2A state runner-up finish in 2013. He was a three-sport athlete with Westminster, playing football, basketball and baseball.

Olson, originally from Mableton, played his prep career at The Whitefield Academy. In Olson’s junior season, he led Whitefield with a 4-2 record and a 1.52 ERA in 46 innings. He

earned First Team All-Region honors in 2014 and was an All-Region honorable mention in 2013.

Returning to RichmondSenior reliever Layne Looney is coming off of one of the best years for a reliever in school history, recording a 0.60 ERA in 30.1 innings in 2018. For his efforts, Looney was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 19th round of last year’s MLB Draft. In lue of signing a professional contract, Looney returned to pitch for the Spiders for his senior season. Looney was domi-nant on the mound, striking out 51 hitters in his 23 appearances, good for a 15.3 strikeouts per nine innings pitched ratio. Looney cited his reasons to return to school was to finish his business degree and compete for an A-10 championship and a chance at an NCAA Regional

Senior StopperLayne Looney had a highly successful junior season, his first in the bullpen. After starting 14 games as a sophmore, Looney made the transition to the bullpen for 2018. He dropped his ERA from 3.21 as a sophomore to 0.60 his junior year. Looney has a 2.57 career ERA in 45 appearances and his eight saves last season rank fourth-most in a single season. His career saves total of eight ranks tied for 10th all time. Looney was also named a preseason Third Team All-American by the NCBWA and was added to the NCBWA Preseason Stopper of the Year Watch List on Monday.

McGuigan to the MoundRedshirt senior Brendan McGuigan will be returning to the weekend rotation as he is set to be the Sunday starter to begin 2019. McGuigan worked as a starter as a freshman before suffering an injury and enduring Tommy John surgery after his sophomore season. McGuigan competed in each of the last two seasons, making a total of 24 appearances with three starts. In 18.2 innings of work in 2018, McGuigan allowed opponents to hit just .200 against him as he earned a 1-0 record and struck out 11 hitters.

Fresh FacesRichmond baseball welcomes 14 newcomers to this year’s team, including 10 true freshman who will be making their collegiate debuts. Four transfers add to the list of newcomers, with graduate transfer A.J. Kloehn (Lafayette), and four-year transfers of Daniel Little (Louisville), Mark Ready (Santa Clara) and Kent Morrison (Santa Clara). True freshman Justin Meyer is set to be the opening day starter at third base after letterin for four seasons at The Haverford school where he was twice a First Team All-Conference selection, twice a Second Team All-Conference Selection, was Second Team All-Philadelphia and led The Haverford School to a PIAA State Championship and a 24-8 record.
