Summer Alliance Meetings:

Eastern - During Eastern Alliance MG Meeting at UT on Sat, May 31 at UT. Knoxville. Sevier County hosting.

Words from our leader, Chris Cooper:

Another Master Gardener Winter School has come and gone!  We had very good attendance for both days and a good time was had by all.  We had the opportunity to hear from and meet with Dr. Scott

Senseman and Dr. Robert Burns.  They were very impressed with the number of Master Gardeners that were present.  T.J. Tennent really got the crowd fired up and motivated by sharing his life story with us.  We also learned how to diagnose plant problems in our landscape.

Let me take this opportunity to thank all of our presenters, Anthony Tuggle, Janie Becker, the Rutherford County Master Gardener volunteers and the Master Gardener Advocacy Board for their tireless commitment to making Winter School the success that it is.  Thank you and hope to see you next year for Winter School 2015!

Thanks to everyone who participated in 2013 Search for Excellence and congratulations to the winners!  Read about all of the projects  here.

From the Advocate Board: Special thanks to a special lady, Suzanne Allen, who spends many hours and much energy in the pursuit of making this a great annual event. Two thumbs up!

WS 2014 Silent Auction There are so many wonderful, giving people to thank for their participation in our Winter School Silent Auction that I hesitate to begin the list for fear I'll leave someone out.  You were all a

great help to our mutual goal of adding more dollars to the seed money needed for next year's conference.

Especially helpful were all the Master Gardeners from Rutherford County, led by agents Jamie and Anthony and the new intern class.  All of you Rutherford County folks are greatly appreciated for your unselfish work and guidance on behalf of the WS effort.

The most popular items at the auction tables were the seeds brought to us by Hamilton County MGs. At only a 25 cents donation, each, they flew out the door, putting almost $300 extra in the coffers. Also from Hamilton County came some great hand crafted  items and baskets including one filled with gardening items and Parsy Boles' barbeque party display.

Sumner County probably came in second in the count of number of items donated and please note how very popular Nancy Grant's gardening apron was so that if your association is looking for ideas for next year, you may ask your seamstresses to start early!

Sandee Cook of Big Springs MGs brought us some inspiring books to raffle off and so many other individuals donated from their own workshops and talents such as Doug Hilton, Bev Walker, Johnny Suthers, Pam Swoner, Denisa Cate and topped off by Beth Hambree's beautiful quilt.

Wilson County filled quite a few spots with lovely ceramics and gardening books which added to our bright, country theme.

And then there was the artistry of Warren County that brought us concrete leaves, a garden tote, Aloe plant, hummingbird feeder and bright Pansies from Mary's Greenhouse.

Thank you Morton's for the big bags of worm castings which sparked spirited bidding among many gardeners intent on getting their green friends growing.

Other counties that brought many and various items to display and sell were Cumberland, Rutherford, Davidson, Putnam, Hardeman, Hamilton, Blount, Montgomery (remember the Tn items basket?) and Dyer Counties. You are all winners in the contest of who could be most imaginative.

Last to be mentioned but of course not last in our hearts are all you nice people who bid for and took these items home. Without you, there would be no Event.  Thank you, Thank you all!

Master Gardeners advise in city's public garden.  The Sevier County Master Gardeners have been invited to make recommendations to the City of Pigeon Forge in the development of their new public garden.  Located at The LeConte Center at Pigeon Forge on the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River, this new $50 million facility was dedicated in October, 2013, and has various types of garden beds.  Landscape plantings focus on native species and being wildlife-friendly.  Perennials, woody shrubs and trees and ground covers are located throughout the entrance, terrace and stream-side areas.  Master Gardeners are advising in not only signage types, but also printed brochures and wireless electronic connections through the Center's network system.  Sevier Master Gardeners involved in this first phase are Lois English, W.C. "Dub"& Glenna Julian, Leo & Linda Lubke, Marianne & Franco Piccione,Donna Little and Roger Simpson.
