CORYPHAEUS EXCLUSIVE A MESSAGE FROM J.K.

The vacation fun of the beaches, Mariposa, and other favourite places, as well as the summer jobs, for most of us, are over for an- other term. On behalf of the Students’ Council of the University of Waterloo , I welcome you back to the campus and I wish you a successful semester.

To the new Freshman Class, a special welcome is extended. We are proud that you have selected our University for the purpose of furthering your education. It is our hope that you will soon develop an unquestionable pride for this young university, that you will suc- ceed in your particular ambitions, and that these next few years will be especially enjoyable and memorable for you.

“University” has many different implications to many different people. For this reason, our purpose of being at university is often misunderstood. For many it is an occasion for intense study; for others it is one for “pure kicks.” However, in actual effect, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom; and with all thy getting get understanding.” (Prov. 4:7). Rather, it is an opportunity - an opportunity to more truly understand the world in which we live and the people with whom we live. It is a time to take stock of ourselves, to develop our ideals and to deepen our ability to appreciate.

All of this; so that we can make some worthwhile contribution to our society when we are its leaders, whether it be in politics, the sciences, engineering, or the social and human sciences. It is our destiny to lead and so we should prepare well.

Jim Kraemer.

ideals. We attending the school and realizing its fine qualities must take it on ourselves to spread the name and reputation of the school both far and wide. This column, like the r:st of this special issue is designed to students while in attendance at uni-

give you Freshman a thumbnail sketch of University life and the versity, to try in every way to pro- mote it. In this way students in later

role you are expected to play in enriching that life. But it’s hardly years will be better able to expand

my purpose to ryhme off a little “Welcome to Waterloo” bit be- upon it.

self with vour fellow classmates and * * * * as a member of the university.

* * * * I like September; its the only month of the year in which I am

able to blow about six hundred hard earned bucks all in one ugly breathtaking swoop. It gives you a sense of power coupled with a sense of emptiness and as the year progresses, there is ‘no doubt left as to which sense you feel more acutely. Money is the only lh&$ng factor in this happy three score and ten dash to the big wire which we call life. Today, the average student cannot afford to be lavish in his spending. So with this in mind, we have thoughtfully provided ample scope for you to have an entertaining time and be of service too.

“Extracurricularactivities” is a lovely word. Roll it on the tongue a few times and get used to it for we are advocating that all of you freshpeople find such an activity and partake thereof.

* * * * Here’s a bit of a scoop for the old guard. I finally discovered

why Don Stanton wears those ghastly ties. They match his under- wear. You should see that man’s clothesline on a Saturday. It looks like the entire U.S. Navy hung their distress and “Plague aboard” flags out to dry. But I don’t mean to cast any disparaging remarks on Doctor Stanton’s taste in clothes, nor on his ability as a housekeeper. In the laundry room he’s a real whiz. His shirts come out really white - even the blue ones. And in the past, his attempts at making cookies have come under harsh criticism. This is unfair. I used them all last summer and as far as golf balls are concerned, those little round cocoanut delights turned out to be real money savers.

Last one on the carpet’s a rotten integer.

* * * * Getting down to more basic things like the complete and utter

lack of that joyous commodity, school spirit, let me say a few words. We have wonderful athletic teams at this school, but they suffer from lack of support. Several times last year I called the stadium to ask what time the game began and the reply was always the same, “What time can you get here?” All work and no play will drive you straight up the old wall and when I mean play, I mean good clean campus fun. But don’t be a pig about this extra-curricular business, there are only so many girls to go around, so limit yourselves accordingly. And girls, engineering students are out, O-U-T. These fellows have too heavy a load to be fooling around with fringe benefits and the same thing is true of the Science boys, therefore, process of elimin- ation brings you to that most beloved of campus types, the Artsman; motivated by a deep sense of the aesthetic, he will treat you as Aeneas treated Dido, as Alec treated Tess, as Henry treated lovely Anne and so forth.

* * * * “Follow the Warriors.” I’ve been giving that slogan a great deal

of thought. It has more than an epic ring, more than an epic message; in fact, it’s an epic invitation. You know - the epic journey through Hell! But we hope that this year such a trip will be a thing of the past. This year we have, “some fine new prospects plus some of the experienced men from last year.” There friends, you have the classic athletic cliche. But the season should be interesting this year be- cause the college Hawks tire in the same league we are. That two schools so close together have peacefully co-existed for a number of years is absolutely disgusting. Nothing could draw crowds to a game faster than a blood feud. “To you we throw the torch” - so burn somebody with it! And a new exciting attraction may be present at the games this fall. MALE cheerleaders. I tried out for the squad but all the positions have been filled by engineers. I guess having a “funny” walk has certain advantages after all.

* * * *

It’s customary for me to finish my column with an anecdote about, or a piece of wisdom from George Crabbe. In The Life of George Crabbe by Trevor Popsby-Buford, it is recorded that George, although a very pious man was also a very egotistical man. One day on the village green at Aldeborough, George’s home village, the good man was asked if .he had a match. Misunderstanding the ques- tion, Crabbe folded his hands devoutly and replied, “I had but un- fortunately he died on the cross.”

within twenty-four hours of registra- tion. Friday, the 20th of September is the date set for a mass pep rally. It can only be a success if we have a large number of students in atten- dance. .

Practices for this year’s cheer- leading squad will begin on Tuesday, September 24th. Students (both men and women) who wish to practice hard and have a real desire to pro- mote their school spirit and the unity of their classmates will be welcome.

Let us be proud of Waterloo with- in ourselves and once this has been instilled it’s an easy matter to radiate this feeling to others.

A Little Color Please Cont “d.

Anyone who has attended a foot- ball game in which Queen’s Golden Gaels were participating was no doubt struck by the unbelievably large num- ber of school scarves, toques and mitts, which filled the stands, There is no reason why we at the U. of W. can not match, yes, and even surpass, Queens in this display of colour. Here we must, however, rely on the knit- ting needles of the women in the var- ious faculties (and those at home) at Waterloo. HOW ABOUT IT GIRLS!

We have in the UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO a fine school. Let’s let EVERYONE know about it!

S.CM. Outing The Student Christian Movement

is holding a Freshman outing on Sun- day, Sept. 22, at the Doon School of Fine Arts. For further information please contact Earlby Wakefield at St. Paul’s United College.

- SPORTS Today’s “Sports Briefs” can only be considered a column of

predictions for so far this year, of course, no competition has taken place. However, I=am told by reliable sources that we can look for big things in the next few weeks - Examples? - All right. 1. FQOTBALL TEAM - SURPRISE!

WE HAVE ONE! Bob Benedetti and Dick Aldridge will be rejoining Jim Hahn,

Jock Tindall, Tex Houston, Doug Peacock and many more of last year’s heros to give Waterloo the strongest Warriors yet! Couple these veterans with a great bunch of rookies, headed by a flashy quarter-back from Fort Francis and we finally have a real contender.

Last year’s dismal showing (1 win and 1 tie with how many losses?) cannot be blamed on the ball team alone. A player cannot be expected to “play his heart out” for a student body that refuses to give him the support he desires and deserves. These guys have sweat- ed and slaved for over a week before most of us were even in Water- loo and it seems criminal that they should be forced to play before empty stands. 2. TRACK AND FIELD - The first week in October will be marked by the annual inter-collegiate track and field meet. This year’s team, under their new coach Pat Galasso (and we’re hoping for great things from him in the future) have been practising throughout the summer and should do much to establish Waterloo’s reputation as an athletic power. 3. BASKETBALL - often thought of by many of the athletes around the campus as the most colourful of all Waterloo’s sports and I might say the only one which has received any support at all although even this was so small that the games had to be moved from the Kitchener Auditorium to Seagram Stadium. As yet, I have no inside tips on this team, but from the reports of the other squads, I feel we have a great season ahead of us. Let’s get those games back into the auditorium! 4. INTRA-MURAL SPORTS - Last year’s intra-mural program was marked by a close, hard-fought battle for the trophy - espec- ially as the season came to a close. Only 5 points separated the win- ner and second place!

Throughout the basketball tournament and even more at the hockey games, many spectators from the colleges took their place in the side-lines, and having been to most of these, I can say without a doubt that we had some great times cheering our own fellows on to victory. The spirit between these teams reached unknown heights - even to, shall we say’ bloody enthusiasm - and I mean it literally.

Let’s see more of this this year and really get things going! RE-CAP: -1) Football - first game against MacMaster, Saturday,

September 28; 2) Track and Field - meet in first week in October; 3) Intra-Mural - watch for signs and then sign up.

WE HAVE THE TEAMS B U T if this is to be a success- ful athletic year at Waterloo, it will depend on Y 0 U !
