The University of Western Sydney has established institution wide Learning and Teaching (L&T) Awards. The awards fall under three categories; UWS Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning, UWS Awards for Excellence in Teaching and the Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence in Teaching Award. The awards scheme recognises and rewards the diverse contributions that individuals and teams make to the quality of student learning at UWS and are designed as a pathway to submissions for citation and award applications at the national level, through the Office for Learning and Teaching (OLT). The Awards are intended to:

a. recognise and reward excellence; b. instil notions of best-practice and excellence in all aspects of work at UWS; c. boost morale and productivity of staff; d. identify and support UWS nominees for other award schemes; e. foster ongoing professional development; f. encourage loyalty and commitment to UWS; and g. provide a platform to showcase staff achievements.

The Awards support the strategic goals of the University and act as a channel for monitoring and celebrating achievement by individuals, groups and teams over the previous one to three year period. In some categories of award some submissions may include summarised background material from longer than three years ago to contextualise the achievements.

There is an expectation that successful candidates will apply for external Office for Learning and Teaching Awards within two years of receiving an award.

The UWS L&T Awards comprise:

Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning (8) ($2000 for individual winners; $3000 for teams of two; $4000 for teams of three or more) Excellence in Teaching Awards (4) ($3000 for individual winners; $5000 for teams of two; $7000 for teams of three or more) Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence in Teaching Award (1) The Vice-Chancellor's Excellence in Teaching Award winner will be chosen from the pool of four UWS Excellence in Teaching Award winners, recommended by the UWS Awards Panel.

Potential areas of contribution Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning provide an opportunity for distinctive institutional missions, values and priorities in learning and teaching to be recognised. Citations will be awarded for a wide range of contributions to student learning, both direct and indirect. There are no specified categories for Citations, and awards will be made for both general and more specific contributions. A concise citation will describe the distinctive contribution of the nominee(s). The individual citations are unique and reflect the diversity of ways in which staff contribute to excellent learning and teaching. Listed below (for illustrative purposes only) are examples of possible citations: Academic staff examples: • For excellence in the leadership of a transition program for first year students. • For novel and effective approaches to engaging first-year students in collaborative learning

and peer review in a large class setting. • For the creation of innovative and imaginative resources that engage students in current

disciplinary issues and develop critical thinking skills. • For the introduction of original assessment approaches that recognise the different

learning styles within a diverse student cohort. • For the development of new strategies to ensure effective coordination of teaching in a

cross-school undergraduate program. Sessional academic staff examples: • For sustained support to create a stimulating learning environment in a sessional capacity. • For high quality teaching which demonstrated exceptional achievement as a sessional staff
