LIBERTY GUIDE LIBERTY GUIDE

Liberty University Liberty University is so unique among institutions of higher learning that it is making an impact worldwide! Liberty’s faculty, staff and student body are committed to maintaining a world class university to train “Champions for Christ” in a distinctively Christian environment.

Since its founding in 1971, Liberty has become the largest private university in the state of Virginia and the largest Christian university in the world, recently surpassing 50,000 total students in resident and online programs, fulfilling one of the dreams of my father, our founder, Dr. Jerry Falwell. God has blessed this University with highly credentialed faculty holding degrees from more than 450 institutions of higher learning worldwide. In addition to academic excellence, Liberty also offers campus facilities that are unrivalled among Christian colleges. Liberty’s 5,000 acre campus includes 3,000,000 square feet of classroom, dormitory and recreational space, including the new Liberty University Snowflex Centre,

offering year-round winter sports on the first slope of its kind in North America.

Liberty boasts a nationally ranked debate team and a NCAA Division 1 athletic program, along with academic programs like the Liberty University Schools of Law, Government, Aeronautics, and Nursing, which are leaders in their respective fields. Liberty’s greatest asset, though, is its student body. God has blessed Liberty with the world’s greatest group of students from all 50 states and many foreign countries. These “Champions for Christ” will go out from Liberty University and impact the world with the gospel, which has been our mission from the beginning and will always remain our primary goal.

Sincerely,

Jerry Falwell, Jr. Chancellor of Liberty University

Training Champions for Christ!

You’re leaving your student at Liberty University. We understand.

But what we also want you to know is this campus will become a home away from home for your student. He/she won’t be able to wait to get home for Christmas break, but he’ll be just as excited to return for the spring semester. Vice President of Student Affairs, Dr. Mark Hine says, “The growth and maturity that will take place in your student over the next four years will become some of the most developmental times of his/her life. And at the same time, we want you to know mom, dad, we’re here for you. Our Parent and Family Connections office sponsors activities and programs to develop and strengthen the relationship between the University and the families of our students. We are here to help you with the transition of leaving your son or daughter at Liberty while you remain at home.”

We hope that you sense, through all aspects of Parent and Family Connections, a closer correlation to life at Liberty. We know you want to be involved, so we’re here to help foster that relationship. Through our monthly e-newsletter and website, we intend to keep parents informed of campus activities and events that affect the lives of their students. We welcome your input and feedback as we plan future events and services specifically designed for you.

Keeping you connected,

Theresa DunbarDirector, Parent and Family Connections

Under the headship of Vice President Dwayne Carson, the Office of Student Leadership (OSL) trains student leaders within the residence halls. It collaborates with Student Affairs in the development of a holistic student life experience. We have four objectives when it comes to ministering to students:Every student is lovedEvery student is prayed for by name dailyEvery student is prayed with weekly Every student that attends Liberty is personally developed and discipled.

Parent Involvement One of the greatest ways to be involved in Student Leadership’s ministry is to join us in prayer the student leaders pray for our students from Colossians 1:9-11. They use this Biblical prayer to outline of seven prayer requests, one for each day of the week:

Please join us in one of the most powerful contributions you can make in the life of your student while away from you, to pray daily along with the staff and student leaders who care for every student each day while at Liberty.

LYNCHBURG GUIDE

Visit www.universityparent.com/liberty

Founding FatherLynchburg was named for its founder, John Lynch, who at the age of 17 started a ferry service across the James River in 1757. He was also responsible for Lynchburg’s first bridge across the river, which replaced the ferry in 1812.

45 AcresIn October 1786, the Virginia General Assembly granted John Lynch a charter for a town. The 45 acres granted for the town were his own land. Lynchburg was incorporated as a town in 1805 and as a city in 1852.

Last TribeThe Monacan Indian tribe lived in the Lynchburg area until well into the 17th century. Their chief village, Rassawek, stood near where the James and Rivanna Rivers meet in Fluvanna

County. They were driven westward or killed by the Powhatans and Iroquois. Descendants of the Monacan now live in the Bear Mountain area of Amherst County.

Quaker Meeting HouseThe Society of Friends, or Quakers, was the first religious group to settle in Lynchburg. Although Charles Lynch, Sr. was a Roman Catholic, his wife, Sarah and daughter were instrumental in founding the South River Meeting House of the Society of Friends, the city’s first house of worship. The Meeting House, located on Fort Avenue, was restored and is now part of Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Miller-Claytor HouseBuilt in 1791 by John Miller, a tavern owner and later owned by Samuel Claytor, the Miller-Claytor House was the fourth house to be constructed in Lynchburg. It was moved from the corner of 8th Street and Church Street to Riverside Park and restored in 1936 as a Sesquicentennial project of the Lynchburg Historical Society.

Seven HillsCollege Hill, Garland Hill, Daniel’s Hill, Federal Hill, Diamond Hill, White Rock Hill, and Franklin Hill were the original “Seven Hills” of the City of Lynchburg.

Miller ParkSamuel Miller, born on June 30, 1792 in Albemarle County, made a fortune buying and selling stocks and bonds. Upon his death, he left money to establish the Miller Home for Girls in Lynchburg and the Miller Home for Boys in Albemarle County. He also left Miller Park to the City of Lynchburg for the benefit of all citizens.

Point of HonorBuilt around 1815 by Dr. George Cabell, Sr., an eminent physician whose most famous patient was Patrick Henry. Point of Honor was the home of important Lynchburg area families, including the Daniels, Paynes, and Owens.

Nichols TavernAs early as 1815, the Federal style structure known today as the Joseph Nichols Tavern was a thriving “ordinary” or inn, near an extension of the Old Ferry Road, now the corner of Fifth and Madison Streets. It is probable that Thomas Jefferson lodged at the Tavern on his way from Monticello to Poplar Forest. In the 1840s the site became known as the Western Hotel and has since served as a hotel, a brothel and a rooming house. It was restored in 1975.

Love AppleAccording to local legend, Thomas Jefferson, who was visiting the owners of the Miller-Claytor House on his way to his Poplar Forest home, took a bite of the “poisonous love apple.” Supposedly, this was the first time anyone had eaten this fruit, which we now call the tomato, in Virginia.

The Lynchburg Museum System Visit the Lynchburg Museum System and explore the history of Lynchburg and the Virginia Piedmont. The Lynchburg Museum, housed in the restored 1855 Old Court House, shares stories about the people and fascinating events that have shaped Central Virginia and exhibits treasures of all kinds --- silver and furniture made in Lynchburg, fine art, antique toys, Civil War memorabilia, sports, artifacts from the civil rights era, aviation, music, and much more! www.lynchburgmuseum.org and www.pointofhonor.org, at The Lynchburg Museum System on Facebook, or call (434) 455-6226 for information.
