The motto Discoveries in
Education was adopted
in 1969. These words,
together with a shield
depicting a Spanish
barque under sail, represented VIU’s Coat
of Arms when the institution was known as
Malaspina College. The motto also provides
a link with one of Captain Alejandro
Malaspina’s ships—the Descubierta—which
means Discovery.

2014 Honorary Doctor of L aws
– Dr . R obert Thir sk
Robert Thirsk’s passion for space exploration began when he was a young boy attending Powell River’s Grief Point Elementary School. As a Grade 3 student, he found his imagination piqued while listening to astronaut John Glenn on the radio with his classmates.
That early inspiration remained, and today Thirsk is well known throughout Canada and the world for his many contributions to global space exploration, and for fostering educational opportunities for Canadian students and educators.
Thirsk was accepted for astronaut training with the Canadian Space Agency in 1983, selected from 4,000 applicants. One of his first roles as an astronaut was as Backup Payload Specialist to Marc Garneau for the October 1984 Space Shuttle Mission. Thirsk’s first space flight experience came in 1996, when he spent over 17 days aboard Space Shuttle Columbia. As Payload Specialist, he and his six
crewmates performed 43 international experiments devoted to the study of life and materials sciences. In 2009, Thirsk became the first Canadian astronaut to fly on a long-duration expedition aboard the International Space Station. Arriving on the Russian Soyuz spacecraft, Thirsk and his five international crewmates performed an unprecedented number of multidisciplinary research experiments, and undertook complex robotic operations and maintenance and repair work on Station systems and payloads. Landing back at Kazakhstan on Dec. 1, 2009, Thirsk had lived and worked in space for 188 days during this second voyage to space.
Throughout his career, Thirsk has been a strong role model for youth: developing curricula for schools, and visiting universities to discuss his work. He conducted live downlink interviews with students during his 2009 space mission, including one very memorable 20-minute link with Powell River students and teachers. A strong promoter of a Canadian economy based upon exploration and innovation, he encourages young Canadians to build their dreams upon a solid educational foundation and advanced skills.
Resigning his position of astronaut with the Canadian Space Agency in 2012, Thirsk joined the Canadian Institute of Health Research in Ottawa. As Vice-President of Public, Government and Institute Affairs, he oversees the 13 institutes dedicated to health care issues such as aging and cancer research.
Thirsk holds a Bachelor and Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, a Doctorate in Medicine and a Master of Business Administration. Prior to his second space flight mission, he learned to speak Russian.
Thirsk’s past honors include the Order of British Columbia, awarded in 2012; the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal in 2009; the Outer Space Exploration Medal of Merit, awarded by the President of the Russian Federation in 2011; and Honorary Doctorates from four other Canadian universities.

He is a widely sought-after and popular guest speaker, emcee, and event host on the Island and has helped raise funds for community causes benefitting children, youth, students, people with disabilities and serious illnesses, members of the business community, and animals.
Originally from Ontario, Williams moved to Vancouver Island in 2001 and became a popular on-air television personality for CTV’s Nanaimo bureau. Currently, he serves as the host of ‘I Love This Island’ features on CTV Vancouver Island, and host of the daily radio show Café Victoria on CFAX 1070.
Williams continues his volunteer work with the Salvation Army, the BC SPCA, the Haven Society, Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island, Leadership Victoria, the Canadian Cancer Society, many Island Chambers of Commerce, Tourism Vancouver Island, Rotary, the Vancouver Island Economic Alliance, North Island Wildlife Recovery Association and the Nanaimo Child Development Centre.
He serves on the Victoria Salvation Army Advisory Board, the Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation Board, and in the Campaign Cabinet for the Greater Victoria and the Central/North Vancouver Island United Way Campaigns.
Williams also serves as Board President of the Jeneece Edroff Society, and was formerly the Fundraising Co-Chair
of the Jeneece Place Project for the Queen Alexandra Foundation for Children (now the Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island).
Williams has served on the Board of CFAX Santas Anonymous and the Nanaimo United Way. He is also a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow, a rare occurrence for non-Rotarians.
A VIU Foundation director since 2007, and Foundation Chair from 2011 to 2013, Williams has been a key leader in many of VIU’s annual fundraising initiatives. He has emceed VIU’s Festival of Trees fundraiser for more than 10 years to support student scholarships, bursaries and awards, and regularly promotes VIU students, programs and events in the media.
Williams has received numerous awards recognizing his commitment to community service, including the 2012 Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal. He was named as one of the Top 20 Influencers on Vancouver Island by Douglas Magazine, and the 2013 Tourism MVP by Tourism Vancouver Island.
Williams also received the 2009 Chair’s Award of Distinction from the United Way of Canada, the BC Toastmasters 2010 Leadership and Communication Award for British Columbia, Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce 2010 Sterling Award as Citizen of the Year, and a 2012 Leadership Victoria Community Award.
His most inspirational role models include his partner Amanda, and his parents, whom he describes as hard working, decent people who taught him the value of respect for others and the obligation to share your skills and abilities with others.

All students, faculty and staff participating in the convocation ceremony wear regalia as a symbol of their academic accomplishments. Diploma and certificate students wear a cap and gown, while students who have achieved a bachelor's or master's degree also wear a hood draped over their shoulders. Like most universities in North America, the regalia worn by Vancouver Island University’s degree students is representative of their area of study. The gowns are largely similar, with the difference being in the sleeves: the bachelor’s gown has closed sleeves and the master’s gown has open sleeves. The hood colour indicates the graduate’s program or area of study:
Bachelor of Arts – red;
Bachelor of Arts in Child and Youth Care – purple;
Bachelor of Business Administration – regal gold;
Bachelor of Education – burgundy;
Bachelor of Hospitality Management – Persian turquoise;
Bachelor of Interior Design – steel grey;
Bachelor of Music In Jazz Studies – admiralty blue;
Bachelor of Natural Resource Protection – moss green;
Bachelor of Science – Aztec gold;
Bachelor of Science in Nursing – teal;
Bachelor of Tourism Management – royal blue;
Master of Arts in Sustainable Leisure Management –
crimson;
Master of Business Administration – purple;
Master of Education in Educational Leadership –
burgundy;
Master of Education in Special Education – royal blue.
The bachelor’s degree hood is edged in white and the master’s degree hood is lined in grey. The Master of Business Administration degree hood is similar to the one used by the University of Hertfordshire in the United Kingdom, with whom VIU originally offered its first MBA programs and continues to offer a dual MBA-MScIB program.

Paddle
The paddle that is on display during VIU’s convocation ceremonies was given to the University by Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo when he was installed as Chancellor in 2008. This paddle, made by Brian Bob, Qwuyutsapulth of the Coast Salish/ Ucluelet First Nation, is carved of yellow cedar and signifies teamwork, pulling together, like in a canoe. The salmon carved onto the blade represents journeys; salmon leave the place where they are hatched but return later in their lives, much in the same way that youth earn an education and then return home to bring their skills and knowledge back to their communities. During the installation celebrations, Chief Atleo presented a paddle to each of the four regional campuses with the wish that it be used at special occasions, like a graduation ceremony. The paddle given to the Nanaimo campus is a steering paddle, which helps guide us in our important journeys. It has since become an important symbol and tradition in our Convocation ceremonies.
At the convocation ceremonies, the paddle is carried in and out of the theatre by the President.
Mace
During the Middle Ages, a metal-clad wooden mace was an effective weapon in battle. As newer and more powerful arms were developed, its military significance diminished, and it was transformed into a symbol of authority. Today, the ceremonial mace is used in many government assembly locations, such as the British and Canadian Houses of Parliament, and is carried before ecclesiastical dignitaries and in university ceremonies such as this.
The mace used for VIU’s convocation was designed and created by retired art instructor John A. Charnetski in 1994. The metre-long mace is made of stainless steel and gold-plated cast bronze. It features four guardian eagles and enameled medallions bearing VIU’s coat of arms and arbutus emblems. At the convocation ceremonies, the mace is carried by a retiring member of academic faculty or administration to honour his or her contribution to Vancouver Island University.
