Slide 3 Scioto Foundation Established in 1974 with a gift of $200,000 First grants in 1975 = $4,000 Today, the Foundation is a collection 170+ component funds Ranging in size from $1,000 to $2.1M Supporting unrestricted community grants, specific charities, social causes, education and yes, scholarships 12/31/2007 Assets = 22M 2007 grants paid = $770,000 2008 grants paid = $940,000 Slide 4 Scioto Foundation Scholarships 1 st scholarship fund = 1979 Today 75 separate scholarship funds 2008 awarded over $205,000 in scholarships! As part of its scholarship program SFs: Maintains a scholarship database; Processes payment of scholarship awards; Tracks progress of students; Publicizes names of winners; holds an annual scholarship luncheon; Advertises availability of scholarships and; Coordinates selection activities Slide 5 Lessons Learned Scholarship Program Rising cost of education rapidly outpacing cost of living ( From 2001 to 2006 Ohios average tuition at public universities jumped 35% after adjustment for inflation, the largest five-year increase on record, according to the college board. During that same time period the tuition at SSU increase by 10.8% per year.) Competitive nature of scholarship awards The need for increased scholarship dollars Challenges facing our school systems in providing advanced placement courses Need to increase personal savings for college at an early age Slide 6 Lessons Learned Scholarship Program College graduates earn much more over a lifetime than non- college grads! Less than high school = $20,873 High school grads = $31,000 Bachelors degree=$56,788 Masters & above = $82,320 Source: US Census Bureau Slide 7 One day, every student from Scioto County will have the financial resources to attend the college or university of his or her choice! The Vision of UCAN: Slide 8 What is UCAN? The University/College Access Network program is dedicated to providing financial assistance for our local youth to attend college. Slide 9 UCAN Endowing school scholarship funds Supporting local school districts in establishing/expanding their AP Class offerings Creating a centralized scholarship database for Scioto County youth Developing a marketing campaign focused upon the importance of saving for college i.e. 529 savings plan Has four unique components: Slide 10 UCAN: How it works School district signs a letter of intent to participate in the program Schools establish or choose a school endowment fund to participate in UCAN (There can be only one official fund to participate) School board adopts a resolution to participate in the program Follow other guidelines as set by the Scioto Foundation Endowment funds Slide 11 UCAN: How it works Challenge/Matching grants program The Scioto Foundation has pledged $550,000 for the next five years ($110,000 per year) to support its matching grants program Beginning in September of 2008, the Scioto Foundation began offering a 1:1 match for donations to the school endowment fund. However, there is a $10,000 limit per school district. Endowment funds Slide 12 UCAN: How it works Endowment funds The Foundation will offer a once per year planning retreat (one-day) in order to: Set annual fundraising activities Review previous fundraising activities In addition, the Foundation will offer at least one training program per year on a fundraising topic Road maps Slide 13 UCAN: How it works SF will offer annual mini-grants to local school districts for: Stipends to cover the costs of students AP exams as well as PSAT/ACT/SAT exams Work with SSU & SCOESC to offer Pre-AP training for staff and faculty of the participating school districts AP Classes Slide 14 UCAN: How it works SF has acquired the services of Miami Universitys Center for Public Management and Regional Affairs as a consultant to develop, and establish a scholarship central locator for Scioto County SF will link it to is existing web site: www.sciotofoundation.org www.sciotofoundation.org Centralized Scholarship Database Slide 15 UCAN Timeline September 1, 2008 June 5, 2009 challenge grant period begins one year to acquire $10,000 match September 1, 2008 September 1, 2009, Development of scholarship database AP Summer Institute (2009) Shawnee State University has been awarded a wonderful grant to offer AP Teacher Certification AT NO COST to participants! Marketing/Educational campaign for college savings plans Slide 16 What can I do to participate? Encourage your students to attend college! Talk with community leaders, parents and others about what the program can do for our children! Contribute to my school fund. Share the vision!
