Welcome to New Student Orientation! Orientation is designed to help you with the transition to life as a new Privateer! The Orientation Staff (some pictured above) will help you with your adjustment to UNO. You have the opportunity to familiarize yourself with your academic colleges, meet faculty and administrators, and register for your first semester of classes. You participate in small group discussions led by current students to introduce you to university resources, facilities, student amenities, social and recreational activities, and answer questions you may have concerning UNO or the college experience. Privateer Camp is a three-day, two-night off-campus freshmen leadership retreat held in late July. It is collaboratively planned through the Division of Student Affairs and the Office of Enrollment Services. It is located at Camp Wesley Pines, which is 2.5 hours from New Orleans. During this retreat, incoming students learn about the wide range of involvement activities and resources that UNO offers. Most importantly, incoming students will learn key strategies on how to enhance their leadership skills and successfully transition into the college environment. Privateer Camp will be packed with ice breakers, team-building activities, student panels and workshops

Financial aid assists

students with the

costs incurred while

attending college.

Federal Student aid is comprised of three types of aid: Grants, Work Study and Loans. COUNSELING SERVICES

Counseling Services offers problem assessment, short-term personal (mental health) counseling, career testing and counseling to currently enrolled UNO students. These services are focused on the resolution of students’ current personal concerns and problems that might interfere with academic functioning. Student Support Services (SSS) is a federally funded program that offers FREE academic support services to campus students. It is a program under the U.S. Department of Education that provides support to students who meet federal income guidelines, are first-generation and/or students with a

Student Activities CouncilStudent Activities Council (SAC) is the official student programming board at UNO. SAC is responsible for planning major events on campus, including Welcome Back Luau, Fall Fest, Homecoming Week, and the annual end of the year crawfish boil.

Leadership Cabinet and Leadership Initiatives The Leadership Cabinet is responsible for planning and implementing leadership development opportunities for students. They oversee the annual UNO Leadership Retreat, X-Treme Leadership, which includes a high ropes course, the Leadership Summit, the Leadership Recognition Ceremony, LEAD Workshops, and much more. Other leadership initiatives through SIL include the Emerging Leaders program, the Leadership Institute, and the Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honor Society.

STUDENT ACCOUNTABILITY AND ADVOCACY

Student Accountability and Advocacy aims to educate and promote the policies of Student Code of Conduct, Academic Dishonesty, the UNO Student Handbook and other University policies. The office helps students who feel that a University policy and/or their rights have been violated. Through Student Assistance, the office attempts to improve students’ self-advocacy skills and conflict resolutions skills.

UNO provides athletic opportunities for both men’s and women’s sports teams at the NCAA Division I level. UNO sponsors 14 sports, including men’s baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s indoor & outdoor track and field, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball. UNO students are admitted to home athletic events FREE of charge whether the games are held at the Human Performance Center (volleyball), Lakefront Arena (basketball), Maestri Field (baseball) or the University Tennis Center (tennis).

HONORS PROGRAM

Who qualifies for membership in the Honors Program? First semester freshmen must have a composite ACT score of 26 (with at least 27 in English), SAT Score of 1170 (Reading Comprehension & Math), or be invited by the Honors Director. Continuing or transfer students may also qualify with a 3.25 cumulative GPA.

How does the Honors Program Work? Students must satisfactorily complete

30 hours of honors credit. The only required Honors classes are these: Arts and Sciences 1119, an exploration of Greek literature and philosophy; and ENGL 1159, which satisfies the English composition requirement, or ENGL 2279, which fulfills a literature requirement. (A&S 1119 counts as a social science or humanities elective, and it must be taken concurrently with either of the Honors English courses.) These courses should be taken in a student’s first or second semester. As seniors, Honors students must complete an Honors thesis. This involves registering for six hours of Honors thesis credit, three to be taken in each of the last two semesters.

What are the benefits of membership in the Honors Program? Honors students participate in accredited honors organizations and UNO Honors Council, which serves as a forum for social activities among honors students. Our students contribute $10.00 per semester (Honors dues) to fund various activities like the College Quiz Bowl, a film series, the production of a newsletter, and the general cost of Honors Council gatherings.

What is the purpose of the Honors Program? The Honors Program is designed to challenge academically astute students, offer a curriculum that will prepare them for success in their respective fields, and reward those motivated and competitive enough to achieve high academic goals.

The University Police Department is staffed 24 hours a day to meet the needs of the UNO community. UNOPD coordinates all requests for assistance relative to crime, including threats, theft, personal safety, medical emergencies, harassment, fire, vehicular mishaps, catastrophic weather emergencies, domestic disturbances, and other police-related matters.

University Police have jurisdiction over all University facilities, premises, and property.

Privateer Place is apartment style living located on-campus at UNO. Catering to students from their freshman year to graduate school, the village supports academic success and social networking through the Live, Learn, grow programming model. Other features include a swimming pool, hot tub, barbecue pavilion, sand volleyball court, basketball court, study room, 24-hour laundry facilities, and clubhouse.

Students can choose from four bedroom, two bedroom, or efficiency units with all-inclusive utilities. Units offer a full kitchen complete with stove, dishwasher, refrigerator and built-in dining/study area. The living room is enjoyed by all residents of the apartment and is equipped with telephone/cable outlets. Each unit offers private bedrooms with private or semi-private bathroom. A furniture package is included in two and four bedroom units.

The mission of Lafitte Village is to provide housing to married students, single-parent students, and couples in domestic partnerships at an affordable cost. This housing opportunity gives non-traditional students the ability to still pursue their education while also raising a family. Lafitte Village is conveniently located on the edge of UNO’s campus, providing a more calm and quiet atmosphere. Recently renovated, it offers one and two-bedroom units, which all include stainless steel refrigerators and stoves. The brand new playground and courtyard is a perfect place for children to play and also provides a place to study outside on a beautiful day. FAQS

Are freshmen required to live on campus?Freshmen are now required to live on campus or complete a housing exemption form.

When and how do I apply for student housing?Housing applications are completely separate from the Application for Admission. Applications for Residency should be submitted after the Application for Admission has been submitted. Students do not have to be admitted to UNO to apply for student housing, but must have at least applied. Students are encouraged to apply before the end of May for either the Fall and/or Summer semesters or October for the Spring semester. Room and apartment assignments are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Students wishing to receive an exemption must complete

the form at http://www.uno.edu/housing/. Students are encouraged to apply or fill out the exemption as soon as possible.

Are freshmen allowed to have cars on campus?Yes, all residents are allowed to have cars on campus.

When will I receive my room or apartment assignment?Assignment notices will be mailed in July for the Fall semester, in December for the Spring semester and in May for the Summer semester. Assignments after those dates will be processed as applications are received.

What are the requirements to live in UNO’s student housing?Applicants must be full time students at UNO. Applicants must be in good academic, judicial, and financial standing with the university.

INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES

Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS) is a unique degree program intended to provide versatility for students seeking to design an academic plan of coherent concentrations through the process of integrative learning. The Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies provides students with a well-developed understanding of their Integrative Learning Plan (ILP) that encompasses a three-track plan of study utilizing multicultural and multidisciplinary perspectives. To meet the diverse social, cultural and educational needs of all UNO students, IDS offers a comprehensive program utilizing both on-campus and off-campus credit opportunities. The ILP and personal academic advising are hallmarks of the IDS degree program.
