FPD/101-04 ix
Audience
Most companies using FASPAC find it useful to assign one employee to perform
the functions of key operator. This individual serves as the single point of contact
for issues that involve use and operation of the computer system. This person
also performs important maintenance procedures such as backups and rebooting
the server.
This document is intended for the key operator and assumes the key operator has
basic knowledge of UNIX server administration (such as adding printers and
users). However, the key operator does not have to be proficient in the use of
FASPAC programs.
Administrative Tasks
The key operator usually performs the following tasks:
• Reboots the server, or powers it off/on
• Backs up data daily, weekly, and monthly
• Reorganizes the disk on a regular basis using CKK
• Installs FASPAC releases and updates
• Transfers files between the FASPAC host system and PCs
• Terminates user processes when necessary
• Ensures that equipment is operated correctly, and is cleaned and servicedon a regular basis
• Assists in equipment configuration changes
• Notifies company management of operating difficulties or unresolvedproblems
• Receives questions and problems from operating staff
• Reports problems to the FASPAC Customer Service Line
• Maintain adequate supplies of:
– Paper and custom forms
– Printer ribbons or toner cartridges
– Magnetic tapes for backups.

4Backing Up Files
Why Run the Backup Programs?
In the event of a system failure, all of the information in your FASPAC system
could be lost and you will need to restore your files. Full restoration is possible
only if you always follow the backup routines recommended for your system.
What Do the BACK Programs Do?
The Daily Backup is performed when the BACK program is run. It copies your
data files to one or more daily backup tapes.
The Weekly Backup runs instead of a daily backup on the day of the week you
selected when your FASPAC Release or Release Update was installed. The
Weekly Backup performs the following tasks:
• Copies your data files to one or more weekly backup tapes.
• Copies the FASPAC programs to one or more weekly backup tapes.
What Does the OSBACK Program Do?
The OSBACK should be run once a month. It copies the FASPAC program files
and the complete operating system to one or more tapes.
FPD/101-04 4-1
Backup Options (UTIL/BKUP)
The backup options are standard in FASPAC and provide you with all of the
programs required to ensure that your system is totally backed up. We
recommend the following procedures:
• Back up your system’s data files every day (BKUP/BACK)
• Back up your system’s data files and FASPAC programs once a week
(BKUP/BACK)
• Back up the operating system once a month (BKUP/OSBK)
The Daily Backup will only back up data files. The Weekly Backup will back up
data files and FASPAC program files.
During the 10th through the 17th of every month, you will be reminded to run the
Operating System Backup (OSBK). This procedure will back up the necessary
files required in an emergency situation (such as a disk failure) to get your
system functional once again. If an OSBK tape has not been created and your
disk fails, we will not have the necessary software required to restore your
system. We would have to create an emergency boot tape and then ship it to you
by air freight. This could take up to three working days, which in turn means
your operation would be totally shut down until this tape is loaded.
The OSBK function is a separate function from the BACK program—you will
only be reminded to run it on a monthly basis.
When you perform these backup operations, the information required to fully
restore your system has been recorded on the backup media. This information is
required to restore the system in the case of a catastrophic failure.
Customizing Backups
If you plan to customize your backups, we suggest you customize them only on
special occasions. Once the customized backup has completed, delete the
customized backup. We do not want you to risk not having all necessary
data on the backup tape in case of an emergency.
Note: Remember, if you customize your backup only those files you have
specified will be backed up to tape. If you encounter any disk problems or file
problems, we can only restore the data files that reside on that tape.
Customizing is discussed in List Backup Options (BKUP/LIST) on page 4-7.

BACKING UP FILES
Backup (BKUP/BACK)
Use this program to run the Daily and Weekly Backup procedures. You can run it
immediately or set a future time for the backup to run.
When the Backup is finished, a listing is printed either to the system default
printer or to another printer you have specified.
To perform the backup:
Make sure all users are signed off FASPAC. If the terminals are actively working
during the backup, we cannot be sure what data is on the tape. If a restore is
necessary, it will be up to you and your users to determine what data is missing.
We can only recreate your data up to the point when the original backup took
place, resulting in many partial records being restored.
1. From any FASPAC menu, type BACK and press Return.
The following message appears:
Please Put Backup Tape in Tape Drive
Press RETURN to continue
2. Insert a tape in the tape drive and press Return.
The program calculates how many tapes are required and lists
information about the backup job.

• Type the hour and press Return.
• Type the minute and press Return.
In the above example, the time is set for one minute to midnight.
Note: If you enter a time that is prior to the current system hour, the backup job
will start immediately.
5. To quit the program without running the backup job, press F7 or CMD
before you press Return in the Minute field.
6. To run a backup job immediately, enter a time that is equal to the current
system time.
Note: If you enter a future time to run a backup, helpful hints, constructed as
questions and answers, display on the screen until the backup starts.
When the Backup starts, it checks to see if there are any users logged on the
system. If there are, the backup still takes place and a listing of these terminals is
printed on the Backup Listing.

List Backup Options (BKUP/LIST)
The List Backup Options module allows you to customize the Daily or Weekly
Backups. You can:
• Select the printer on which it will print the backup log
• Select the tape drive to which the backup will write each day and each
week
• Select the files to be backed up each day
• Select the files to be backed up each week
When you run the BACK program, the system first checks to see if there are any
entries in the customized area. If so, it will use these entries as the parameters for
the backup. If the system checks this customized area and does not find any
entries, it will use the original backup script.
After you have customized the backup script, you can delete the custom
parameters and the system will use the original backup script.
The List Backup Options menu provides the following programs for customizing
your backup procedure:
1 - DISPLAY CUSTOM DAILY BACKUP—Displays the path names of the
files that will be backed up to a tape on a daily basis.
2 - DISPLAY CUSTOM WEEKLY BACKUP—Displays the path names of

Set a User’s PRT Defaults (UTIL/PTR/PSET)
Use the PSET program to customize default printer assignments for a specific
login ID or terminal ID.
Default printer assignments are the assignments that display when users sign on
to FASPAC, as well as when they run the PRT program. If the PRT program is
used to change one or more of the default printer assignments, the change is in
effect only until the users sign off or until they run the PRT program again, at
which time the default printer assignments take over.
PSET works in the following manner:
• If default printer assignments are entered for a specific login ID, they are
used whenever the login ID is used, no matter which terminal is used.
• If the default printer assignments are entered for a specific terminal ID,
they are used at the terminal when any login without default printer
assignments is used.
• If a login ID with custom default printer assignments is used at a terminal
with custom default printer assignments, the login’s custom default printer
assignments are used.
After default printer assignments have been customized in the PSET program,
they remain until they are changed in the PSET program. Logging off the system
does not delete the custom default printer assignments.
Before You Begin
Your system configuration may differ from the example used in these
instructions.
Valid entries in the Printer files are:
• lp# or ttyi## or ttyj## or ttya# for a direct serial printer
• tty# or muxp# or tp# or tq# or ttyp# for an attached printer
Note: Replace the # sign with a terminal number from 0 to 255.
Note: New default printer assignments entered through the PSET program do not
go into effect until you sign off from FASPAC, log out of the system completely,
and log in again.

change the default printer assignments, and to reset the default printer
assignments when the temporary change is no longer required.
Note: All users can run PRT and make temporary changes to their printer
assignments.
The Spool option is used to increase productivity by buffering output sent to a
printer. This frees the terminal to do other things while the printer is printing.
Spooling creates one problem if not used consistently across the system: if two
people print to the same printer with one spooling and the other not spooling, the
two printouts will be mixed together. We recommend that the Spool fields be set
for system-wide use and that the entries in the Spool fields always be accepted.
Use PSET to change some or all of the default entries in the Spool field.

GUIDELINES FOR PC WORKSTATIONS
Helpful Hints
• Work with a local computer store to select PC hardware and software and
for instructions on installation and use.
• Check out local repair services.
• Faspac Technical or Application Support cannot help with PC software
you purchased elsewhere, as we do not know the product.
PC Software
There are three kinds of PC software:
• The Operating System, such as MS-DOS. It controls all functions. The
machine will not run without it.
• Utility Programs such as TI Emulator, X-Tree, Disk Optimizer. These are
friendly little helpers used to manage resources and maintain effective
operation.
• Application Programs such as Lotus 1-2-3, Word Perfect, Word, usually
the reason you bought your PC.
Emulation Software
PCs with emulation software can connect to all SCO, HP-UX, and AIX UNIX
systems.
The emulation program we recommend is the latest version of Procomm Plus.
You will also need the wpds.kbd file, which is the keyboard mapping file for
Procomm Plus.
If you do not have the wpds.kbd file, contact Faspac Sales.

8Reorganizing FASPAC Files
Use the FASPAC CKK (UTIL/SYST/CKK) program to reorganize FASPAC
files so they are less fragmented. Less fragmented files result in quicker
day-to-day operations on the system and a faster backup process.
Run CKK at the beginning of each new month after the old month has been
closed and all files have been purged. Always perform a backup before running
CKK.
You can run CKK only from the main console.
Caution! Do not stop the CKK program after it starts running.
Before You Run CKK
Do the following before you run CKK:
1. Back up your system’s data files and FASPAC programs by running
UTIL/BKUP/BACK.
2. Make sure the printer on which you are printing the CKK listing is online
and loaded with paper.
3. Make sure all other users are logged off the system.
FWI OPTION Users Only: If you are using the FASPAC Web Interface
(FWI), you must stop Unattended Transaction Processing (UTP) before running
CKK. From FASPAC, type ADM/SYS/OPT/UTP/STOP.
4. After CKK has completed, reboot the system to restart the UTP process.
FPD/101-04 8-1
Logging Off All Users

1. From any FASPAC Menu, type WHO and press Return.
A screen similar to the following appears:
2. Type Q and press Return to exit the screen.
3. Notify all users to log off the system.
4. After all users have logged off, rerun WHO and check again. If any users
remain logged in, end their sessions (see Chapter 13: Troubleshooting).
