GREEK
It is great to welcome you to the University of Nebraska-
Kearney! Whether you are new to UNK or are a current
student, you will find that UNK offers a wide range of
opportunities to grow as an individual, develop your personal values and character, and progress as a leader. For over 60 years, fraternities and sororities on the UNK
campus have been instrumental in the success of student
life at UNK. We have chapters representing all three of our
national governing bodies that represent approximately
12% of our student population. Being in a fraternity or sorority is the premier leadership
experience that universities can offer a student. Opportunities ranging from chapter management, event
planning, conflict resolution, and many more are all ways
fraternities and sororities provide a unique leadership
opportunity to the students of UNK. Not only are students
involved within their Greek organizations, but you will see
many of them heavily involved in other organizations on
campus. Some of the top leadership positions on campus
are consistently held by Greek students. My role as the Assistant Director for Greek Affairs is to
advise the governing bodies of the Greek organizations,
provide programming and leadership development opportunities for students, assist chapters in achieving
their individual goals and help them define personal success.

SScholarship
Scholarship is the first priority for all Greek organizations at UNK. Each chapter places a strong emphasis on creating an atmosphere conducive to high academic performance. Each chapter has a minimum GPA requirement to become a member, to be initiated, to remain in good standing and to hold leadership positions. Members are encouraged to strive for scholastic excellence through incentive and reward programs, tutors, study hours and educational workshops pertaining to academic improvement.
Each fraternity and sorority was founded on similar principles: . scholarship . leadership . community service and philanthropy . member development . brotherhood /sisterhood
It is these values which set fraternities and sororities apart from other campus organizations.

UNK fraternities and sororities can provide you with a unique opportunity to develop your leadership skills and potential. Becoming a member opens the door to elected or appointed positions and committee participation. Each chapter is self-governed and relies on the special talents of its members for successful management.
Not only do fraternity and sorority members hold leadership positions in their individual chapters but you can also find them as leaders in other organizations. Fraternity and sorority members are actively involved in Student Government, NSE (New Student Enrollment), Chancellor’s Ambassadors, Campus Diplomats, Athletics, and numerous honor organizations.
Leadership
UNK fraternities and sororities have a long tradition of dedicated involvement in community service and philanthropy. Serving the community not only benefits worthy causes, it will also allow you to gain valuable leadership experience and enrich your life.
Each fraternity and sorority has a philanthropy which they support through service projects and fundraisers. Additionally, there are several Greek community service projects in which all fraternity and sorority members actively participate in.
During the past academic year, chapters donated over $60,000 to non-profit organizations and over 10,000 hours of their time.

Member development is a very important aspect to Greek Life at UNK. Chapters are encouraged to sponsor educational programs for their members but are also encouraged to attend educational programs put on by various campus offices throughout the year. These programs educate students on a variety of topics ranging from health and wellness to professional development.

HA ZING AND SAFETY The University and each (inter)national fraternity and sorority expects its members to obey all local, state and federal laws and to abide by the chapter’s policies, guidelines and standards. Significant resources are allocated at all levels to educate the members about alcohol and
substance abuse and being responsible for their behavior and actions.
Hazing is banned by Nebraska state law and the University. All fraternities and sororities have strict policies against hazing practices. Hazing is defined as any action taken or situation created,
intentionally, whether on or off chapter premises, to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment or ridicule. Hazing is forbidden and will not be tolerated.
All activities sponsored by our Greek organizations must be consistent with the
founding principles of the organizations and must compliment the educational mission of the University of Nebraska at Kearney. If you are concerned about any suspicious activities, or have any questions, please contact the Assistant Director, Greek Affairs at 308.865.8057.
What does Greek Life at UNK have to offer?Manystudentsfindthatjoiningafraternityorsororityprovidesthem a home away from home and a foundation upon which to build a new and exciting future. In addition, the UNK Greek community opens many doors by providing leadership, academic, athletic, service, and interpersonal opportunities. The decision to join a Greek letter organization is a lifelong commitment with an organization that stands for the best things college has to offer.
How many people are a part of Greek Life at UNK?The total Greek population at UNK is approximately 600 students. This makes up about 12% of the UNK undergraduate student body.
How many fraternities and sororities are there at UNK?We have 13 fraternities and sororities at UNK with one fraternity who is in colony status.
What is the difference between recruitment and the new member process?Recruitment is the mutual selection process by which fraternities and sororities choose those individuals to whom they will extend bids to become members of their organization, and the potential new member chooses the organization that they would like to become a member of. The new member process is the period of time from when the potential new member accepts his/her bid, until they are initiated. It is during this time that the new member gets acquainted with the organization and learns the organization’s history, ideals, and structure.

For new Greek parents, as your student makes the
transition from high school to college, the Greek
community at the University of Nebraska-Kearney
can provide a valuable network of support. When
your son or daughter joins a Greek chapter, they
will gain scholastic support from the chapter
members, opportunities for campus and chapter
leadership, community service and volunteer
experience, networking relationships with alumni
and close friendships with chapter members.

Parent Information
Will it be like the movie Animal House?Many people have the misconception that the image of Greek organizations depicted in Animal House is really what is happening on college campuses across America. In reality, the Animal House image of Greek Life could not be further from the truth.
Because the Greek community at UNK contributes to the social activity on campus, it has taken great strides toward creating a responsible and safe environment for its members. All fraternities and sororities have strict policies regulating the consumption of alcohol for underage members and guests. Organizations work closely with their respective governing council as well as theOfficeofGreekAffairstoconductsafesocialactivities.AllGreek organizations are held accountable to their national Risk Management policies and Nebraska state laws.
Is it expensive to be a member of a fraternity or sorority?Joiningafraternityorasororitydoeshaveafinancialcommitment. The chapters are self-supporting through dues paid by their members. When students join a Greek letter organization, they also agree to pay dues and fees while in school to maintain membership. Although chapters may make accommodations forspecialneeds,studentsshouldbefullyawareofthefinancialobligations before they decide to join.
Each chapter has different dues for membership that cover such things as chapter and national dues, dues to the Greek governing council, social activities, resources, and other miscellaneous costs.Specificfinancialinformationforeachorganizationisavailable during Recruitment.
If I go through recruitment, will I have to accept a bid?No.RecruitmentisanexcellentwaytofindoutmoreaboutGreekLifeatUNKandtomeetmanynewpeople.Manyfirstyearstudentsparticipateinrecruitmenttheirfirstsemester,orwaituntil their second semester or sophomore year.
Can you join as a first year student?Forallchapters,youcanjoinwithinyourfirstyear.
Will joining a fraternity or sorority affect my grades?Joining a chapter is a large time commitment; however, time management and scholarship are emphasized. Many organizations hold study hours not only for their new members, but also for their initiated members, to ensure that they continue to focus on their academics. Currently, the All-Greek GPA is above the All-Campus GPA, an accomplishment that UNK Greeks are very proud of!
Do fraternities and sororities haze?It is against Nebraska state law, as well as every fraternity and sorority’s national policy to haze any member of their organization. Hazing is also prohibited by University policy. UNK organizations do not condone nor tolerate any form of hazing of their members.
Is alcohol a big part of Greek Life?No. While there are social functions that each chapter sponsors, more time in the chapter is spent doing brotherhood/sisterhood activities, community service, committing time to their classes, and involvement in other organizations. UNK’s fraternities and sororities have some of the most active students on campus. Every organization puts in countless hours of community service, and raises money for their national philanthropies as well as encourages involvement in a wide variety of campus organizations. They also have frequently organized brotherhood/sisterhood events for their members. Whether or not to consume alcohol is a decision made by any UNK individual, and being in a fraternity or sorority has no bearing on the decision.

Will Greek Life assist students as they begin their careers?OneofthetremendousassetsofaffiliationwithaGreekletterorganization is the nationwide network of alumni/ae members of the organization. As a student prepares for entry into the career world, alumni/ae members can assist in job placement through their knowledge of where jobs are and who is hiring. In addition, Greek Life will assist students in developing transferable skills that will be needed in the career world, such as management, leadership development, communications, and more!
What does being Greek really mean?Membership in a Greek letter organization is a lifetime commitment. Choosing the Greek community means working with a group of men or women who can exchange and stand for common goals and ideas while being held to a higher standard than other college students. The Greek experience during the college years is a gateway to many rewards and connections later in life.
Each of our chapters develop a special bond often called brotherhood or sisterhood. Both are nurtured through common work, laughter, service projects, intramurals, and the shared successes and frustrations of all. Membership
J oining a fraternity or sorority has a unique opportunity that most organizations do not
offer. The ability to remain just as active in your organization,post-graduation,isahugebenefit to joining a Greek organization. Not only are students able to create a bond with their brothers and sisters while a collegiate student, but that bond spans over a lifetime. Alumni involvement is one of the reasons why the UNK Greek community have sustained and succeded for the last 50 years! Alumni/ae play a major role in advising local chapters by serving as chapter advisors, serving on Alumni Boards and Housing Corporations and by serving as volunteers for (Inter)National organizations. We are so glad you are interested in UNK this upcoming year! There
is no better way to get involved on our campus than becoming a part
of the Greek community.
Our members are seen all over campus. Perhaps you spoke with one
of our members when you came to campus in the summer, went on a
tour, or even stopped at the Welcome Desk in the Student Union. We
have leaders all over campus in numerous different organizations, be
it the Student Diplomats or Chancellor’s Ambassadors, we serve the
campus in many ways.
There are also many opportunities to serve the Kearney community
through service organizations that reach out to the Greek community.
Each chapter also sponsors a national or local foundation which receives
money from them each year, through an event that they put on to raise
money. These events range from poker and dodgeball tournaments
to golf tournaments and pancake feeds.
We have 3 traditional sororities, 7 traditional fraternities, 3 multicultural
sororities and 1 multicultural fraternity. Each of these sororities and
fraternities has something different to offer, but we all run on the same
values and ideals…

Our chapters consistently receive higher overall GPA’s than the entire
UNK campus. Our brothers and sisters are always there to encourage
the best out of each other and provide support if you struggle.
As mentioned earlier, Greek members are seen all over campus in
various leadership roles, not just within their respective houses. Serving
the community is something that our Greeks hold dear to their hearts.
It is a given that if you contact a Greek house, you will have an
abundance of help at your disposal. Brotherhood and sisterhood are
experienced in many different ways, for different people. It is a lifelong
bond that carries beyond University tie. The Greek community at UNK
will support each other in addition to supporting their individual houses.
Therefore, anywhere you go, you have a friend at UNK.

What I like about being Greek is the sense of camaraderie that I get from being a part of a Greek organization. I enjoy being a part of something bigger than myself, and having the opportunity to be a leader on such an incredible platform. Most of all, I enjoy the relationships and opportunities being a leader, scholar, philanthropist, and brother have to offer.
What I like about being Greek is the endless opportunities to grow as an individual and as a leader. Also, the social aspect of Greek life is great. I have been given the opportunity to meet some incredible individuals and if I were not Greek I would have never of had the opportunities that I have had.
My favorite parts of Greek life are the opportunities that I have been afforded with that I don’t believe I would have gotten without my letters. These opportunities range from leadership within the organization, on campus, in the community and the opportunity to meet others within the Greek system. When you join a Greek organization, you don’t just join one group of women or men; you join the whole system. And when you need something, the whole community will back and support you. That is why I love our Greek community so much!

PURPOSE:The purpose of the IFC (Interfraternity Council) is to act as the governing body for all Greek Letter Social Fraternities. In conjunction with this purpose, the IFC also operates as the liaison for the fraternities and provides services to its member fraternities.
THE MISSION OF THE INTERFRATERNITY COUNCIL:It is the mission of the Interfraternity Council to fairly and equally serve all of its member organizations. The IFC shall be the governing body through which the chapters of UNK can come to have equal voice in stating their opinions and concerns regarding the UNK Greek Community. The IFC will strive to establish and maintain strong lines of communication between the member chapters, the Council, the University of Nebraska at Kearney, its student body, and the people of the Kearney community. In addition to this, the IFC will work to foster a spirit of friendliness and cooperative helpfulness among all of the fraternities of this university in matters relating to fraternal and social affairs, scholastic achievement, school activities, anti-hazing and risk management policies, recruitment, and all other matters of concern.

The member organizations of the Interfraternity Council conduct recruitment events specific to each chapter. All fraternities are able to recruit year-round and will host functions for potential members to attend in order to learn more about the chapter. IFC provides support to those individual chapters, however, to gain more information regarding recruitment activities for each chapter, please contact the recruitment chair for that organization.
Interfraternity CouncilThe member organizations of Panhellenic participate in Formal Sorority Recruitment. The structure of the process allows every potential new member (PNM) to experience each chapter while the chapter has the opportunity to get to know the women going through recruitment. As the process continues, both the chapter and the PNM will be able to select which woman/chapter they feel will make the best fit. This is called a Mutual Selection Process. It is very important for both the chapter and the PNM to keep an open mind throughout the entire process in order for it to work successfully.

Sorority Recruitment Schedule
Six chapters are currently housed in University Residence North and University Residence South (URN and URS). URN and URS are designed to have four separate “pods” which are all connected by a central cafeteria. Each pod can house approximately 45 students and has a room that is typically designated as a chapter room for meetings and ritual events, a common living room, and a room that is either used as a game room or a formal living room. Each pod also has a study room and restrooms on each floor.
