Unleashing Ethiopia’s Entrepreneurial Spirit Entrepreneurship Development Programme The Entrepreneurship Development Programme (EDP) was launched by H.E. Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn in February 2013. EDP was established by the United Na- ons Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing in order to support Ethio- pia’s efforts to unleash the entrepreneur - ial spirit of its private sector. The programme seeks to increase the compeveness and enhance the em- ployment creang potenal of micro and small enterprises (MSEs), parcularly for youth and women. In the last 3 and half years the programme’s intervenon led to the creaon of 27,427 new jobs. The EDP is implemented by the Entre- preneurship Development Centre (EDC), which was launched in May 2013, in the presence of H.E. Minister Mekuria Haile, Ministry of Urban Development and Housing. The work of the centre is closely monitored and supervised by the Feder- al Urban Job Creaon and Food Security Agency. Overview Through this programme, new and ex- isng entrepreneurs across the country can access high quality entrepreneur- ship skills training and individualised Business Development Services (BDS). The trainings take into account the lit- eracy rate of the trainee groups, which can access either a standard six-day intensive workshop or customised traning parcularly targeng specific groups such as women, youth, rural and low literacy entrepreneurs. Following the trainings, exisng MSEs interested in taking their business to the next level as well as entrepreneurs keen on geng their startups off the ground can sign up to get a business advisor assigned to them for a peri- od of six to nine months respecvely. access mentorship opportunies on strategy and markeng as well as free soſtware and tools. Those deemed to be the best innovators by the pro- gramme will also be nominated for the 4Afrika Innovaon Grant Award. Canada’s support has enabled the pro- gramme to expand its delivery of en- trepreneurship training and business advisory services to women and youth. A new partnership with Microsoſt East Africa was made to enable 200,000 aspiring and exisng entrepreneurs Engaging local stakeholders The programme has proacvely sought out partnerships to help ex- pand the reach as well as enhance the quality of its intervenons in Ethiopia. In addion to its headquarters in Addis Ababa, EDC has opened branch offic- es in Amhara, Oromia, Tigray and the Southern Naons, Naonalies and Peoples Regional States. Five public universies in Addis Aba- ba, Adama, Bahir Dar, Hawasa and Mekele have also come on board. This partnership allows students to ben- efit from the entrepreneurship pro- gramme, through accessing training, BDS and incubaon space for startups, prior to them joining Ethiopia’s work- force upon graduaon.

Entrepreneurship Development Programme

EDP was established by the United Na-tions Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing in order to support Ethio-pia’s efforts to unleash the entrepreneur-ial spirit of its private sector.
