ageing population, managing the rising cost of healthcare, and better managing
the impact of chronic illness and social isolation. Our academics and reserachers

Dr John Beard MBBS PhD
Former Director of Ageing and Life Course, World
Health Organization
From January 2008, until he retired in December 2018, Dr Beard was the
Director of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Department of Ageing and
Life Course.
Dr Beard has held the position of Director, Department of Gender, Women and
Health with WHO, vice-chair and immediate past chair of the World Economic
Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Ageing, acted as co-editor of the 2014
Lancet series on Ageing, was a lead writer and editor of the first World Report
on Ageing and Health (2015) and oversaw the development of the ‘Global
strategy and action plan on ageing and health’, adopted by WHO Member
States in May 2016. Dr Beard was appointed Director of the Global Centre for
Modern Ageing Board in January 2019.

Jane Mussared
Chief Executive, COTA
Jane Mussared is the Chief Executive of the Council on the Ageing in South
Australia (COTA SA), the peak body promoting the rights, needs and interests of
older South Australians. Jane came to COTA SA in 2015 from ACH Group where
she had been part of their Executive team since 2001, initially managing the
Health and Community Services Division and then heading up People and
Innovation. Prior to that Jane was the Manager of the State Government Office
for the Ageing.

Ben Owen
General Manager, Retail Bank, BankSA
Ben Owen joined the BankSA Leadership Team in the role of Head of Small and
Medium Enterprise (SME) Business Banking in May 2017. He was subsequently
appointed General Manager Retail Banking in June 2018. Ben is responsible for
South Australia’s largest branch network, in addition to BankSA’s home lending
function.
Prior to joining BankSA, Ben spent over a decade at ANZ where he held
leadership roles in customer relationship management, frontline product
distribution, strategic risk initiatives, credit risk policy, project management,
governance and strategy. Ben has a successful track record in implementing
process improvements and change programs across consumer and business
banking divisions.
Professor Julie Ratcliffe
College of Nursing and Health Sciences, Matthew
Flinders Fellow College of Nursing and Health Sciences
Julie Ratcliffe is the newly appointed Mathew Flinders Fellow and Professor of
Health Economics in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. She also holds
Honorary Professorial positions in the Institute of Health and Wellbeing at the
University of Glasgow and the School of Health and Related Research at the
University of Sheffield.
Previously she has held academic positions in the Health Economics Research
Unit at Brunel University, the School of Health and Related Research at the
University of Sheffield and most recently in the Institute for Choice, University of
South Australia. Her research interests include the measurement and valuation
of health and quality of life outcomes, patient and consumer preferences and the
economic evaluation of interventions across health and social care sectors.

Ageing
Julianne Parkinson is the CEO of the Global Centre for Modern Ageing. With
more than 25 years’ experience in leadership roles, including Ernst &Young,
KPMG and SA Government, Julianne specialises in strategic planning, business
development and complex stakeholder engagement.
Julianne has led large scale economic and social transformational engagements
including Ageing Well initiatives focused on changing the narrative around ageing
and articulating the business and social opportunities of realising the largely
untapped asset of people as they age.

Melinda Cilento
Chief Executive, CEDA
Melinda is a company director and experienced senior executive. She is a non-
executive director of Woodside Petroleum and Australian Unity and Co-Chair of
Reconciliation Australia. Melinda is also a member of the Parliamentary Budget
Office panel of experts advisors.
She was previously a Commissioner with the Productivity Commission and
Deputy CEO and Chief Economist with the Business Council of Australia.
Melinda has also previously held senior roles with the Federal Department of
Treasury, Invesco and the International Monetary Fund. Melinda’s executive and
director experience covers the corporate, government and not-for-profit sectors
and she has a strong track record of working collaboratively across sectors.
