As if the range of different businesseswasn’t enough, within each typically lieslayer upon layer of complexity. This is, in part, due to the fierce competition fornotoriously large fees. Without innovationor a detailed understanding of its marketsand clients, banks will find these feesrapidly disappear. The good news is that investment banks need bothspecialists and those able to grasp thebigger picture. As the opposite function-by-function list suggests, a mix ofresponsibilities, roles and opportunities are available to you.

Although the structure and divisionalnames used in this guide are particular to Deutsche Bank, you will find some or all of these roles in varying forms in arange of other financial institutions, frominvestment to retail banks, as well as morespecialized organizations, including hedgefunds, pension funds, financial advisorsand securities companies to name but a few.

OVERVIEW OFINVESTMENT BANKING

Investment banks are among the largestand most complex organizations in theworld. They serve many different types of companies, institutions and

governments and play a huge role in the financial sector.

Investment banking isnow a much broaderbusiness than it waseven a quarter of

a century ago. Many traditional

servicescentered on helping

corporateclients secure

financing to achieve key strategicobjectives e.g. mergers and acquisitions.Today, investment banks are much morethan well-connected intermediariesbetween investors and chief executives:the biggest players can meet virtually allthe financing and investment needs ofwholesale customers globally.

Successive waves of consolidation in the finance sector have led to changes in the industry. Investment banks nowtrade and issue equity and debt as well as lend directly to clients and offer a rangeof investment options. Having swallowedup brokers, commercial banks and asset

I would like to explore. Don’t say: Someone called wanting advice on an

upcoming merger, but I told them we were too busy.

HUMAN RESOURCESThis division makes sure you have the skills toprogress and, of course, your pay and benefitsare in order. HR also analyzes employee dataand costs to help steer strategic decisions onthe bank’s future workforce.Do say: I think strong leadership is key toany team’s development. Don’t say: Pull yourself together! Training’sfor wimps.

LEGAL, RISK & CAPITALAn extremely varied division that assesses thefull spectrum of risks the bank faces, both externaland internal, from market crashes and liquidityshortages to terrorist attacks and regulatory rulings.It then analyzes and mitigates these risks to ensurethe bank’s operations are not affected.Do say: If the Bank of England raises rates, youcould lose £500,000 on that deal.Don’t say: All that risk assessment? You might aswell use a crystal ball.

GROUP TECHNOLOGY & OPERATIONS

Manages all the technology and transaction

processing challenges of the bank. Don’t be

fooled into thinking this is just a support

function; business performance and competitive

advantage relies on superior technology and

processes these days.

Do say: The new transaction work-flow

application has been a huge success, all the

trading settled today without a hitch.

Don’t say: Was that $50 million or $50 billion?

GLOBAL MARKETSThis is where the image of the furiously competitivepace in banking comes from. This division buys andsells a variety of financial instruments across globalmarkets either on behalf of clients or across thebank’s own book.Do say: P&L on my book is going through the roof. Don’t say: If I have to get in for 6.30am, can I have a driver?

ASSET MANAGEMENTResponsible for putting togetherinvestments for both private individuals,and organizations, fund managers havestrong relationships with their clients.Fund managers invest in equities, fixedincome, property and many other typesof assets on behalf of clients. Do say: Care to discuss asset allocation in yourportfolio over dinner? Don’t say: I just open the Financial Times or WallStreet Journal, close my eyes and stick a pin in.

TYPE OF PERSONThe investment banking world is like anunapproachable old boys’ club – unless you arean ivy league university graduate.

TYPE OF PERSONThis is completely untrue! Yes, a good degree is

essential but banks invest a huge amount intrying to attract a very diverse range of people.

TRADERSThis is partially true – traders must be veryfocused and motivated as they conduct one of the bank’s core activities and therefore havea lot of responsibility to shoulder.

GRADUATESQuite the opposite. Graduates are given asurprising amount of responsibility and anyonewho’s skilled and willing is recognized.

THE HOURSNot entirely true, it does depend on the areawhere you work. On the trading floor you workan intense 10 hour day; and when on a deal,investment bankers can pull all-nighters. Otherareas generally have more standard workschedules. Starting a career in any industryrequires long hours and dedication to getahead, banking is no different.

THE SALARYNot quite, bankers are not the Hollywood A-list.

Most people have normal, down to earth lives.

You may earn more than comparative roles in

other industries, but a private jet might be going

a bit far…

THE CULTUREThis is not true. In investment banking you are always learning and there’s an open,feedback culture.

THE MATHSBeing able to understand and express ideaswith numbers is certainly an important skill inmany roles, but what degree you havegraduated with is not necessarily the qualifyingfactor – in fact, Deutsche Bank recruits the bestfrom all disciplines.

DIVERSITYThere is not much diversity in investment banking –

there are few women and minorities represented.

THE JARGONThere is so much jargon in banking; it’s likehaving to learn a new language.

There are many assumptions made about investment banking, including theenvironment, work and people. Some ofthese clichés are based on truth and

some are definitely rooted inmisunderstanding.

Deutsche Bank’s currentAnalysts considered themyths they had heard beforethey joined the Bank andwhether these had turned out to be reality.

YOU HAVE TO SPEAK GERMAN

Deutsche Bank is a leading international bank

with a multinational workforce. It has a strong

global presence with offices in London, New

York, Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Sydney and

Frankfurt (to name a few). And speaking

German is not mandatory!

ALTERNATIVE FUNDS This segment includes real estate andhedge funds. Real estate enablesinvestors to buy into funds featuringproperty types including domestic,commercial or industrial property. Asset managers increasingly offer theopportunity to invest in hedge funds.Typically this is attractive to organizationsthat want to diversify from traditionalinstrument types, e.g. equities (stocks) and fixed income (bonds) to boost returns.

INSURANCE ASSET MANAGEMENT This area provides clients with customizedinvestment programs designed to addressan insurer's specific needs. It offersinvestment solutions across multipledisciplines, including traditional fixedincome, equities, asset allocation services,and alternative asset classes, such ashedge funds and real estate.

There are two main functions in each of the above areas:

ASSET MANAGEMENT

WHAT DOES THE ASSET MANAGEMENTDIVISION DO?Asset management firms manage otherpeople’s money, usually belonging tocompanies, institutional investors, orprivate parties/individuals, by convertingthis money into assets – stocks, bonds,derivatives, and other types of investments– with the goal of making that money,make more money. Asset managers use a combination of investment theory,quantitative tools, market experience andresearch to pick investments for theirportfolios, ranging from high-risk stocks tocommercial real estate or cash accounts.

WHAT ROLES ARE THERE WITHIN ASSETMANAGEMENT? Asset management is typically split intofour main areas according to investor and investment types:

INSTITUTIONAL INVESTORSThis area specializes in providinginvestment advice and products to pensionfunds, insurance companies, charities andcorporates wanting to make long-terminvestments of their assets.

RETAIL INVESTORSMost investment managers don’t dealdirectly with individual members of thepublic, instead, the client relationship isheld by another part of the bank such asPrivate Wealth Management (PWM) or anindependent financial advisor (IFA). Theasset management division works in thebackground to develop products tailored to the retail needs which are marketedthrough the above channels.

INVESTMENT MANAGEMENTThis function is responsible for investing clients’ funds in specific asset classes, such asequities and fixed income as well as hedge funds. Research analysts research companiesand industry sectors and make recommendations on how best to invest. The informationthey provide is used by portfolio managers or clients who choose to make their owninvestment decisions. A research analyst will have a specific market focus, e.g. thetelecoms industry, and will become an expert in that area. As well as being veryanalytical, a research analyst needs to be able to take complex information and distill it down to something comprehensive, yet easy to understand.

Portfolio managers manage clients’ portfolios of investments, deciding what to invest in,based on pre-determined criteria. A client is able to decide, for example, what percentageof his or her portfolio should be invested in which geographic markets and the level ofrisk he or she is willing to take. Portfolio managers specialize in particular instrumentsand markets and are responsible for performance of a portfolio of fund types (e.g. growth,value, domestic or regional).

Portfolio managers live and breathe the financial markets. They need to be up to speedon world events and understand how these macro factors will influence their clients’portfolios. Portfolio managers are supported by a team, as well as research analysts andtraders. However, the final decision on how to best manage the portfolio lies with them.Accordingly, they need to be confident in their abilities, able to think on their feet and notbe afraid of making difficult decisions.

As a portfolio manager your success is transparent. All portfolios are measured againstan industry benchmark, making it clear to see who is doing well and who isn’t. Having a good track record is synonymous with gaining greater responsibility. Clients need tohave confidence in the portfolio manager’s abilities if they are to place their assets withthe bank.

Traders execute trades on behalf of portfolio managers via a network of brokers. Buildingand maintaining this network is imperative. It’s a trader’s job to make sure all trades areexecuted at the best possible price and under the best conditions for the client.Accordingly, they need to know the best broker to deal with at any given time. Tradersoften work under pressure; an unexpected move in the markets could lead all portfoliomanagers to want to quickly execute trades. It’s imperative that a trader keeps a coolhead in these situations.

WHAT IS THE GRADUATE PROGRAM LIKE?

Roles in asset management are less flexible than in other areas of the bank. Analysts tend to be hired

into either investment management or sales and distribution. The program allows trainees to find their

niche (unless you knew what you wanted to do already) and become a specialist.

LIFE AS AN ANALYST

On the investment management side, there are fewer placements and success depends on niche marketknowledge and building long-term relationships with clients. Specialization is crucial to demonstrating value to clients, but relationships and networking can be just as important. This adds up to long hours, but a varied and fulfilling working day. Eventually, you’ll become a true specialist in your area and an extremelyvaluable team member.

If you want to create and strategize on products, position them in the market and win over investors, productmanagement is for you. You get to be the link between the asset managers, clients and legal – it’s hectic, butyou will get to know your market really well. There are only a few graduates and commitment is key – youcan’t forge a relationship with a client one year and dissolve it the next.

SO, IS ASSET MANAGEMENT FOR YOU?

Asset Management is a rapidly changing area of banking. The products traded and developed by asset managers

are becoming more and more sophisticated and the market increasingly competitive, making this a dynamic

career choice.

The profession requires excellent quantitative and analytical skills, as well as a good degree. Many grads studied

business or economics, but that’s not as essential as enthusiasm and good communication skills. All analysts have

to take the Investment Management Certificate (IMC) as part of the program and this happens outside of work

time. Many Analysts also opt to take the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) exam.

DO YOU WANT TO...

• Become an expert in a specific sector of the financial indices

• Work with and influence the world’sbiggest investors

• Develop products that are at the forefrontof the industry

• Understand how different financialinstruments behave

• Deal with long term investments (so work is not as deadline driven)

• Have a great opportunity to shine – only a few grads are taken on annually

BUT BEWARE...• Your evenings may not be your own. Traders,portfolio managers and sales often spendevenings networking

Product management is responsible forcreating new investment products. A goodproduct manager has strong internalrelations and extensive networks thatenable him or her to gather the intelligencerequired to develop the right products. As well as interfacing with sales, productmanagers work closely with investmentmanagement, watch competitors and develop a deep market understandingin order to identify where the opportunitieslie. Sales and communication skills are alsoimportant: for any new product to flourish it needs to have investors.

Product managers work closely with salesto ensure that they understand the benefitsof any new products and are able to sellthem on to clients. Product managers alsointerface regularly with legal andcommunications to ensure the products arecorrectly marketed and that the bank doesnot expose itself to any undue risk. Thiscan be a very pressurized role, dependingon the number of products to be launchedat any one time.

SALES AND DISTRIBUTION

This function is responsible for creating,

positioning and selling the investment

products the bank offers.

Sales is responsible for managing the client

relationship. Clients in this regard are the

distribution channels through which asset

management products are sold and include

other retail banks, independent financial

advisors, institutional investors and the

PWM division. A sales person needs to

understand the client’s requirements and

present the right product. Conversely,

it is also sales’ responsibility to channel

feedback to product management to ensure

that the products being developed are in

line with client needs.

WHAT DOES THE FINANCE DIVISION DO?

For any company, integrity is crucial to itsability to do business. When a company’sregulatory compliance or internal controls fall short, we’re all aware of the scandal thatcan ensue (think WorldCom or Enron).

For banks, as financial intermediaries, it’s doubly important that there is a robustframework to establish control and ensure integrity.

The Finance division at Deutsche Bank doesjust this. It is a bit like a police force for theBank. It enforces the external laws that governthe financial industry and sets the internalcontrols to ensure the Bank conductsits business effectively and profitably.

WHAT ROLES ARE THEREWITHIN FINANCE?

Finance is split into four areas:

BUSINESS AREA CONTROL (BAC)

When traders are doing deals, they don’thave much time on their hands. They are thereto make money for the bank and don’t havetime to check the fruits (or foibles) of their dailytrading activity. For each business area, BACcalculates, analyzes and reports risk and profitand loss (P&L) to the trading desks and seniormanagement daily, often using numericalmodels to tally these figures against what thetraders ‘think’ they made that day. BAC are keypartners with the traders when it comes tosetting up new products and business streams,designing and implementing infrastructurechanges and in providing information for themto manage their businesses in the mostprofitable and scaleable manner. BAC alsointerfaces with Legal Entity Control and RiskManagement/Group Risk Control to ensure thereis accurate and fairinformation in the firm’sfinancials and Value at Risk(VaR) respectively.

LEGAL ENTITY CONTROL (LEC)

LEC is responsible for reporting the financialresults to Corporate Centre and for statutoryreporting to regulators, such as the UK’sFinancial Services Authority (FSA) and theFederal Reserve in the US. All regional Financefunctions report on a monthly and annual basison the managerial and financial aspects of thebusiness. This function is also tasked withmaking sure Deutsche Bank’s reportingstructure makes the best use of technology.

GROUP RISK CONTROL (GRC)

GRC is the centre of competence withinDeutsche Bank for risk measurement

and reporting. GRC teams workclosely with Legal, Risk & Capital toimplement risk methodology. GRC’srole includes the measurement,analysis and reporting of credit,market, operational, investment,

business and liquidity risk. In GRCyou will be responsible for quantifying

risk and ensuring the quality and integrityof risk related data.

GLOBAL VALUATION GROUP (GVG)

This department makes sure that all thoseexciting and exotic investment products arepriced correctly. The GVG uses industry standardsas well as complex mathematics to support itsown pricing models. Some investment productsbeing created these days are so new that there is no industry standard, so it’simportant to assess pricing. Thisgroup is also responsible formaking sure that trading desksglobally have their pricingtested on a regular basis.

Finance interfaces with theGroup Technology & Operationsfunctions regularly, ensuringthat systems are able to copewith its requirements. Financeand Operations are also in chargeof the ledger and making sure that the money is in the bank after a hard day of trading.

WHAT IS THE GRADUATE PROGRAM LIKE?You will become part of a valued team and be given as much responsibility as you are ready for. Rather than doinglots of different rotations in each area, with Deutsche Bank you will begin a real job from the day you start. Beforethe end of your first year you will be a productive member of the team. The continuous development plan is tailoredto suit your individual needs. During your first couple of years with Finance, not only will you be given the optionto choose the most appropriate professional qualification for you, you will also be given the opportunity to take upa different role in another part of Finance – so you have some significant input into where your career goes!

LIFE AS AN ANALYST

In all areas of Finance you’ll be expected to contribute to critical processes straight away. Even during yourgraduate program you will work on annual reports or with key traders and risk managers in, say, creditderivatives. The environment is fast-paced, especially when you’re working with traders, but the hours aremostly sociable. The division is geared towards mentoring its grads, but you’ll get further quicker with aninquisitive nature and by showing willingness to take on responsibility.

As a part of the overall Finance team you’ll need to be able to stand up for yourself and your work. In BAC, GRCand GVG you will find that traders are very focused and motivated individuals and as a result, you may need tostand your ground in the cauldron of the trading floor to make yourself heard! On a day-to-day basis, GRC andGVG are less exposed to traders, but the pressure of calculating acceptable levels of risk and pricing structuresdemands confidence in your models. Meanwhile the focus in LEC is more on the entities and regionalmanagement priorities, but the responsibilities are just as important, since the company’s financial reputation is at stake. Report writing skills and being able to talk to management with confidence are key.

Previously, investment banks provided

corporates with advice and

introductions to investors, rather

than lending their own funds like

a commercial bank. Nowadays,

in order to meet increased demands,

Working in any part of Global Banking will mean you have to perform in a high pressure and intenselydemanding atmosphere from day one. If you think you’re the kind of person who can thrive in a hot-houseclimate, then this is your ideal environment.If you start in Corporate Finance, you could get to advise the CEOs of the world’s largest companies on a regularbasis, create complex financial structures that help multinationals achieve growth strategies and strike dealsworth millions. You have to be highly numerate as you’ll be working out how different strategies impact clients’financial structures. It’s really challenging work, and you’ll need a cool head and plenty of stamina. If you join Global Transaction Banking you will be talking regularly with clients and interacting with lawyers,other internal teams, other banks, market infrastructure organizations (i.e. clearing houses and exchanges) andrating agencies. It can take a long time to understand the roles of the different counterparties within GlobalTransaction Banking and the variety of clients’ needs mean you will build up the picture gradually but powerfullyover time.

WHAT IS THE GRADUATE PROGRAM LIKE?

In Global Banking, you’ll do rotations of up to a year, but the rate of movement between departments variesdepending on the region you are in.

One thing is for sure, expect the first year to be incredibly hard work – this is not for the faint-hearted who are precious about their spare time.

The rewards, however, of working in Corporate Finance are attractive! You will have a direct impact on thefinancial fortunes of the largest blue chip companies in the world – it’s a privileged position and that meansyou have to put in the hours.

The Global Transaction Banking training program is slightly more flexible than Corporate Finance; some Analysts have commented on the seamless transition between when the ‘program’ ends and the ‘career’ begins.

GLOBAL BANKING continued

Leveraged Debt Capital Markets – This team usesinnovative and complex structures to supplyfinance to organizations with limited access to

traditional capital markets. DeutscheBank’s Leveraged Debt Capital

Markets business is No.1 in non-USD denominated high yieldissuance and was also top inEurope in investment gradecorporate bonds. (Source:Thomson Financial 2007).

Mergers & Acquisitions(M&A) – Buying anotherfirm is a critical moment in

any company’s development and they are willingto pay significant fees for high-quality advice onthe choice of financing options available. DeutscheBank’s M&A bankers have the ability to enabletheir clients to achieve their strategic objectives asthey can place the most powerful product platformand network of relationships at their service.

Within the Transaction Banking section of GlobalBanking, services relating to the movement ofcash and securities have been split into fourmain areas:

Cash Management – Large corporates often havethousands of bank accounts and hundreds ofbanking partners. This can make it very hard tokeep track of (and use) all of the cash within thefirm. The Cash Management team providesservices to help consolidate cashflows and investthem short-term to maximize liquidity.

GLOBAL MARKETS

WHAT DOES THE GLOBAL MARKETS DIVISION DO?

Global Markets is responsible for theorigination, sale, structuring and trading offinancial instruments. It is what most peoplethink of as investment banking (along withcorporate finance). Although until relativelyrecently many roles dealing in the capitaland money markets were performed bysmaller specialist institutions.

The trading floor has also changed dramatically in recent years, with phones, then computers gradually replacing openoutcry trading in most markets. However it still performs the same function – tradersbuying and selling financial instruments (e.g. equities and bonds), with the aim ofturning a profit either directly for the bank orfor clients (with the bank earning commission).

Investors deal in the markets for a number of reasons: as well as those that deal for theshort term (using their market expertise to‘beat the market’) and the long term (‘buy andstick’ investors who wish to achieve a returnover a given period), many also trade as partof a risk management strategy (dealing inparticular instruments to offset a predictedfinancial risk). As such, clients may includeasset managers, hedge funds, other banks,mortgage institutions and corporates.

The pace of life is infamous; those that workon the trading floor need that legendarystamina to think and act as quickly as requiredthroughout their day.

WHAT ROLES ARE THERE IN GLOBALMARKETS?

Global Markets is split up into desks coveringspecific markets and regions. There aredifferent roles but all revolve aroundpresenting and executing new investmentopportunities to clients:

SALESSales is responsible for making sure thatclients are offered opportunities and tradingstrategies through liaising with the traders andresearchers on what they have on their booksand their knowledge of the market. Sales isalso responsible for raising capital on behalf ofcompanies and governments by placing theirnewly issued bonds and shares with investors.

TRADING Traders make prices, book trades and managerisk on behalf of clients. They generally liaisewith the sales team on their desk to understandwhat clients want, what ideas Sales andResearch are pushing to clients and whetherthese are realistic according to market prices.

RESEARCH Depending on the desk, researchers are often

client facing with Sales, presenting their

research and ideas on how different markets

will perform. This might include analysis of

a company or industry sector’s financial

performance, or an opinion on the Gross

Domestic Product (GDP) growth prospects

of a particular country.

STRUCTURINGThese are the people who create the more

complex, over-the-counter instruments, they

have their own desks and interface with clients.

There are hundreds of trading desks globally

in large investment banks, but they can be

split into some key areas:

EQUITY These desks handle investments in various

companies across the world. Investorstypically buy and sell equity in companies

based on expectations of future profitability.

The Research function plays an important part:

analysts examine company performance,

investigate industry trends and scrutinize any

issues impacting the companies’ finances.

Traders pay close attention to resultsstatements, but any information that could

affect future financial performance of acompany will result in swift buying or selling

activity. If the news impacts a large firm or

group of firms, the Dow Jones or FTSE 100

may also fluctuate in response.

DEBT Also known as fixed income, many banks buyand sell debt (typically bonds) issued bygovernments, institutions and corporates.Organizations issue debt instruments in order

to secure funds for a fixed term, perhaps 5-10years. Investors buy bonds for the regularinterest payments they receive before aninstrument matures and the debt is repaid.Debt is sometimes considered less fast-paced

than equities due to a higher proportion oflonger-term investors.

WHAT IS THE GRADUATE PROGRAM LIKE?Everyone attends a global classroom training program, this equips you with thebasics you’ll need on the trading floor and you meet your future colleagues fromthe other regions. Most grads go into a generalist pool where you rotate in differentareas (products like credit, commodities, rates, and functions like sales, trading,research and structuring) before deciding on a permanent home. If you’re hired toa specific desk you’ll also have the opportunity to rotate in some relevant areas.

LIFE AS AN ANALYSTGlobal Markets is a tough environment and requires an insatiable appetite to learn.In the first year the demands made on graduates are great and you will be workinglong hours in a high stress environment (there is a lot at stake!) – all difficultcircumstances in which to learn the ropes. As a trader, you will be given your ownportfolio to trade, but you won’t be put in charge of a $5billion book straight away.Learning is continuous but choose your time to ask questions carefully; time is thescarcest commodity on the trading floor.

If you hate getting up early, this might not be the career for you. Trading requires you tobe in before the markets open and this means you can be at work for 12 hours a day starting at6.30am. Research and Sales Analysts work to deadlines and the pressure is high. You may evenbe tempted to keep an eye on market movements over the weekend.

There are challenges working with your internal colleagues as well. Researchers can befrustrated at clients not buying into their ideas, and sales can find it difficult if they can’t getwhat their client wants because market circumstances mean the trader is unable to do the deal.

SO, IS GLOBAL MARKETS FOR YOU?Many traders and sales people have business or economics related degrees, but there are alot of arts graduates too. If you like the sound of the structured products desk, you will haveto be a keen mathematician. But most important is attitude: you must be quick to learn andenthusiastic in order to make a good impact during your internship or graduate program.

GLOBAL MARKETS continued

MONEY MARKETS & FOREIGN EXCHANGE Money market desks typically lend and borrow large amounts for very short periods (usuallyfrom a day to three months). Trading in foreignexchange (FX) also varies according to the

time horizon. Banks do providecurrency to clients for

immediate use (the spotmarket), but most currencyis bought and sold for futureneeds. Typically, clients want

to buy currency at aguaranteed price, say, six

months in the future, in order tomeet a financial commitment in this

currency (e.g. a payment to a supplier). Clientsuse FX to offset risk, but banks trade for profit.

DERIVATIVES These are complex instruments based on theperformance of an underlying asset, e.g. debtor equity. For example, you may want to buy100 Company X shares, but current markettrends mean that the share price will likelyrise in six months, so you buy the option (notan obligation) to purchase them in six months’time at the current price. If you’re wrong, youdon’t have to buy the shares; you simply sellthe option.

Derivatives are a way of dealing in a particularfinancial instrument in the future underspecific circumstances, so they are often used to manage risk. One high profile exampleis the credit derivative. These instruments area kind of insurance policy that allows financialinstitutions to offset the risks of lending (i.e. extending credit) to corporate clients. Abank might buy a credit derivative that permitsit to sell on its exposure to a borrower inspecific circumstances.

More complex still are structured products –derivatives based on multiple market factors.

E.g. an investor might use a structuredproduct to protect its investment in awheat producing firm against the multiplefactors affecting the price of the grain,such as oil prices, currency marketmovements, global warming and localproduction costs. These instruments areoften tailored to very specific needs and,as such, require a detailed knowledge ofmarket dynamics and risk modeling tomake the structured product attractive to the client and profitable for the bank.

with your global HR graduate class. It is designed to give you a headstart before joining your team in your home

location. The program includes the latest ideas and trends in human resource management; it’s practical and

home location, you will rotate through various teams and specialist areas. This is a great learning opportunity and

you will meet a wide range of people. Your first placement is decided after the rotations. The network of contacts

Life as an Analyst is varied and challenging in an innovative environment.

You will work on ‘live’ projects that contribute to the strategic objectives of Deutsche Bank’s HR team.

Rotations across the HR function give you great insight to help you decide the area you want to work

in at the end of the program. There is a lot of on-the-job training, learning from colleagues, as well

as learning about the businesses you support. Self motivation, drive, communication, and creativity

are skills that are often called upon to be successful in your projects and day-to-day

The roles within HR are pretty diverse. There isroom for both generalists and specialists. HR covers three distinct areas:

• HR PRODUCT GROUPS – This area employs HRspecialists who are responsible for designing,developing, advising and implementing best-practice concepts.• Resourcing – Responsible for the overall

design and strategic direction of theemployer brand, graduate and professionalrecruiting

• Development – Designs and delivers a curriculum that covers theskills that people need to develop in their roleand reach their fullpotential, as wellas tailored andspecificallydesignedinnovativesolutions forbusiness teams

• Reward – Designs and delivers employeereward and benefit systems that can beapplied across all functions of the bankaround the world. They also handleinternational projects and assignments,advise on issues like tax and immigration– and of course they also make sure we get paid!

WHAT IS THE GRADUATE PROGRAM LIKE?After the Global Orientation, the program starts with a week’s introduction to finance, bankingand the markets, crucial for getting everyone up to speed. Group Technology & Operations' bluechip training then includes another four weeks of management, operations and technologytraining with a further two modules before the program ends.You will then quickly become a valued member of a team for two or more job rotations, allowingyou to really get your teeth into an area that interests you and make an informed decision as to what to donext. The work is varied and challenging to develop your skills, expertise and career options and includes adhoc tasks as well as ongoing longer term projects, and you will soon have a higher level of responsibility.

Most people working in technology or operations don’t know two colleagues who do the same thing!

On a daily basis you might be dealing with trade, capture, support and settlement, setting departmental

or global budgets, risk reporting, business continuity management or client relationship management.

In IT you may be working with Corporate Finance, Trading, Sales and Research all the time. This all

takes place across a network of contacts from Bahrain to Belgium, Brazil to Bangalore. The roles are

high level, fundamental and the internal clients are demanding.

Everyone is motivated and focused, with one aim: to make money for the Bank often using complex

strategies and technology. Technology and operations needs to make sure trades end up being real

money in the bank, and that takes robust technology, slick processes and innovative people who

understand the business.

It’s very rewarding – you won’t find a more complex, diverse and global environment in the industry.

In technology and operations roles you have to deal with different people and divisions all day, so effective

communication is key. But there is no single ideal technology or operations candidate; the people and their

backgrounds are as diverse as the division itself and all degree disciplines are considered valuable. Operations

has seen a diverse pool of graduates turn into successful managers. Of course if you are interested in a very

technical or niche role you will need to have a related degree.

Every company in every industry must manage

the risks to their business. But some risks are

distinct to investment banks. Credit losses,

volatility of market prices, liquidity shortages,

and regulatory and legal matters can all have

an impact on a bank’s capital and reputation.

For Deutsche Bank to generate revenue and

make a profit, capital needs to be used and

risk taken. There is no reward (profit) without

risk. However, it is critical to balance the

risk/reward equation against a bank’s capacity

to absorb the downside to risk (trading and

lending losses). Deutsche Bank also strives to

maintain its reputation as a leading provider of

financial solutions. These are the ultimate

objectives of Legal, Risk & Capital (LRC).

WHAT ROLES ARE THERE IN LRC?

LRC is split into nine areas:

CHIEF OPERATING OFFICEThe Chief Operating Office is responsible for the control and management of all creditdata across Deutsche Bank globally. INVESTMENT RISK MANAGEMENTInvestment Risk Management (IRM) looks at allrisk-related aspects of potential acquisitionsand is responsible for overseeing the integrationof their risk processes. MARKET RISK MANAGEMENTMarket Risk Management (MRM) analyses andaggregates market risk, to ensure DeutscheBank optimizes its risk-reward relationship andis not exposed to unacceptable losses. MRMhas a strong focus on the activity on the dealingfloors and works closely with, and on behalf of,traders and senior managers to perform thecomplex risk analyses that are crucial to informtheir business decisions.

OPERATIONAL RISK MANAGEMENTThreats as diverse as product liabilities,information security, IT system failure, frauds,and even natural disasters fall within the remitof Operational Risk Management. The divisionraises awareness of these threats, performsvalue adding analysis, and sets and monitorsloss and capital targets used within DeutscheBank.

TREASURYTreasury is responsible for the capital, liquidity,and balance sheet of Deutsche Bank on aglobal, regional, and local basis. Treasurymanages these resources with a view towardsshareholder and bondholder value, as well asregulatory requirements and other externalinfluences.

CREDIT RISK MANAGEMENT

Credit Risk Management (CRM) is the

independent credit approval and monitoring

function for the whole of Deutsche Bank.

CRM represents Deutsche Bank’s centre of

competence for all counterparty risk-related

You might find yourself evaluating the Bank’s acquisitions, both potential and actual, and their implementation,

or reviewing security risks within a particularly unstable country and ensuring that any staff members visiting

this country are aware of the situation.

Alternatively, you could be conducting a detailed analysis to identify the Bank’s key systems, and ensure

appropriate procedures are in place to allow operations to be switched seamlessly in the event of a power

Although you don’t need to be a mathematical genius for all the roles, a passion for numbers and an

analytical mind helps. LRC appeals to arts graduates too – because you’ll be looking at wider issues in

LRC is an ‘art, as well as a science’. Common sense and market intuition is needed just as much as

WHAT DOES THE PRIVATE WEALTHMANAGEMENT (PWM) DIVISION DO?

PWM caters for the complex financial needs ofwealthy people, also known as high net worth(HNW) individuals. The division provides all-round financial planning and support to theseclients, touching on many aspects of their livesfrom business to family. To stay at the forefront,PWM needs to not only create market leadingfinancial solutions, but also nurture strong clientrelationships which are imperative to retainingand growing business.

Clients range from business owners orentrepreneurs to “family houses” – people whohave inherited wealth – and sometimescelebrities. Wealth management is enjoying ahuge surge in business, particularly in emergingmarkets, such as Asia, where new opportunitiescontinue to arise, resulting in banks competingfor a larger share of the market. As privateinvestors become more sophisticated, banks areincreasingly challenged to provide integratedservices to clients who wish to diversify theirportfolio to accumulate extensive gains.

PWM manages its clients’ finances on adiscretionary or non-discretionary basis. Clientswho opt for discretionary support effectivelyhand their finances over to the bank to manage.Based on pre-determined criteria, the bank willmake investment decisions on behalf of theclient and assumes responsibility for protectingand growing their wealth. Non-discretionarymanagement means that, although the clientreceives advice from the bank, he or she makesthe ultimate investment decision.

WHAT ROLES ARE THERE WITHIN PWM?

There are three key areas in PWM:

RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT

Relationship Managers (RM) are the main pointof client contact. This is an exceptionallyimportant role. Successful bankers achieve a position of trusted advisors which requiressuperior financial counsel and services, as well as a long-term relationship that oftentranscends financial matters to the personal.

The financial requirements of PWM clients canbe very complex. An RM needs to couple athorough grounding in the financial marketsand the bank’s products and services with anin-depth understanding of the client’s financialsituation. The aspects of a clients’ wealth thatan RM could be advising on can range fromthe management of diverse portfoliosconsisting of products from real estate tostocks, to setting up trust funds for children,and managing inherited wealth andsuccession planning. Also, topics like artadvisory or philanthropical wealth areimportant within this client group. These areoften sensitive matters that involve a client’sbusiness or family. RMs have to understandaspects of a client’s personal life that mayimpact their investment decisions andstrategies such as interests or hobbies. RMsare responsible for growing business fromexisting clients, e.g. the amount of assetsmanaged by the bank, and acquiring newclients. This involves a large amount ofnetworking and trust building. An RM will often meet with a client’s family and friends to try and broaden their customer base, whichcan erode evenings and weekends.

INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT

Investment Managers (IM) work with RMs to

directly manage clients’ assets (discretionary

portfolio management). An IM will manage a

number of client portfolios, typically consisting

of very complex combinations of investments

from the money markets, real estate and

equity markets, to intricate instruments such

as derivatives. IMs are ultimately responsible

for making their clients’ money make more

money, and at Deutsche Bank they use the

most cutting-edge approaches in the market.

They work closely with product specialists to

ensure that the client’s portfolio is optimized

under risk and tax aspects. IMs will often

support RMs by meeting with clients on a

regular basis to advise on their finances.

PRODUCT SPECIALISTS

Product Specialists develop financialproducts and/or uncover investmentopportunities. Specialists cover specificaspects of wealth management such as real estate advisory, philantrophy andwealth with responsibility or art advisory, or particular instrument types such asequities, FX, mutual funds or alternativeinvestments. This group is often the point of liaison between Deutsche Bank’s GlobalMarkets (GM) division, which sits within the investment bank, and PWM, ensuringthat top market expertise is transferred to HNW clients.

Product Specialists will often be client-facing, working with RMs to communicate specific investment opportunities to clients.Accordingly they need to be goodcommunicators, able to interact at differentlevels and simplify into layman’s termscomplex financial ideas. Specialists alsocover non-client-related functions such as sales and acquisition management,business development and operatingmanagement, though very few graduatesare hired into these roles.

SO, IS PWM FOR YOU?

The opportunities in PWM are varied and challenging for driven and ambitious individuals who want tohave a complete understanding of the financial markets, whilst serving a particularly varied, demandingand idiosyncratic client base. A shining academic record is mandatory; however, it is not enough tosucceed in PWM. Additionally you will need to have excellent social skills and the ability to read yourclients’ individual needs without having them spell it out for you. Building relationships with clients isabsolutely essential; you must be comfortable meeting with new people and come across as trustworthyand honest in order to instill confidence. You may have to handle difficult issues with clients, such astelling them that the market did not move in their favor, but you have an alternative solution. Couple thiswith a large amount of very diverse assets to manage well, and you have a unique challenge ahead of you.

WHAT IS THE GRADUATE TRAINING PROGRAM LIKE?

Most graduates first cut their muscle in investment management as this enables them to develop strong capital

markets knowledge which is a prerequisite for all roles. This is then typically followed by rotations supporting

relationship managers and product specialists, where you will learn how to advise clients, identify investment

opportunities and gain a greater understanding of the Bank’s products and services. Capable graduates can

expect to take on responsibility fast, it is a demanding division and you may have to make your own opportunities

if you want to succeed.

LIFE AS AN ANALYSTSince the structure in PWM is quite flexible, you may find yourself specializing at an early stage. If you arelooking for a program which guides you through a process, PWM may not be for you. You need to be preparedto take on large amounts of responsibility for important and sometimes demanding individuals; it’s verydifferent to managing the assets of a blue-chip company.

PWM has a very flat organizational structure and is less hierarchical than other divisions. Graduates joiningPWM need to have a strong desire for a client-facing career. These are some of the most interesting andvaried private clients you can get. Clients entrust us with the financial well-being of their families andbusinesses which requires a deep level of trust and a long-term commitment from both sides. This isn’t a career to embark on if you are keen to move around the Bank, though that doesn’t mean you won’tprogress. All roles provide excellent opportunities for career advancement; by growing portfolios or clientaccounts, managing more diverse aspects of a client’s finances, discovering and launching new products and services and/or taking on new clients. The development path is very fluid and essentially driven by yourambition and capabilities. If you are successful in this division you can expect to be rewarded very well.

Throughout your career you are supported with all the training you require. This could be an industryqualification such as CFA or similar, or an opportunity to learn more about a specific product or serviceoffered to the client.

LIQUIDITY RISKThe risk stemming from the lack of marketability of an investment that cannot be bought or sold quicklyenough to prevent or minimize a loss

MANDATEDWhen the client company agrees to use the bank for a specific service or transaction

MARKET CAPITALIZATIONThe value of a company’s stock, which gives a picture of the company’s size. It is calculated by multiplying the price of shares by the number of shares outstanding(in the hands of the public)

MARKET MAKERA firm or individual who sets a price at which they’rewilling to sell or buy stock, providing a stable priceagainst which to judge any rise or fall

MARKET RISKThe chance that a security’s value will decline. With debtsecurities, market risk is closely tied to interest rate risk –as interest rates rise, prices decline and vice versa

MATUREWhen an investment based on a fixed term, such as a bond, closes and repayment of principal is made

MERGERS & ACQUISITIONS (M&A)Negotiating the buying and selling of companies or parts of companies. This also describes a division ofbanks that, among other things, consults companies on mergers and takeovers

MIDDLE OFFICEIs the area or function which relates to risk management,they measure, monitor and occasionally proactivelymanage the firm’s exposure

OPERATIONAL RISKThe risk of loss associated with inadequate or failedinternal processes, staff, systems, external events or legal matters

DEBT CAPITAL MARKETS (DCM)The market on which debt instruments are traded as wellas the division of an investment bank which helps clientsbuy and sell them. DCM is also involved in the bondproduct; providing credit rating advice for corporates,organizing bond finance using a pool of investors andoffering derivative solutions for risk management

DEBT Money owed to creditors/lenders or buyers of debt securities

DELIVERYThe settlement of a futures contract

DERIVATIVEAn instrument derived from securities, currencies or commodities, or an index or indicator representing any of these, the price of which will move in a directrelationship to the price of the base instrument or index.They involve the trading of rights or obligations based on the underlying product, but do not directly transferproperty. They are used to hedge risk or to exchange a floating rate of return for fixed rate of return

DOW JONES INDEXUsually refers to the Dow Jones Industrial Index (DJII), anindex of share prices calculated for thirty large US stocks;the US equivalent of the FTSE100

EQUITY CAPITAL MARKETS (ECM)The markets on which primary equity issues (i.e. IPOs) are traded; as well as the name of a division of aninvestment bank which helps clients structure, buy andsell primary equity

EMERGING MARKETSThe financial markets of developing countries, examplesinclude Mexico, Malaysia, Chile, Thailand and Philippines.Emerging market securities are the most volatile in theworld, they have tremendous growth potential, but alsopose significant risks – political upheaval, corruption andcurrency collapse, to name just a few

EQUITIESSecurities representing ownership interest possessed byshareholders in a corporation – stock as opposed to bonds

EQUITYThe net worth of a company, it represents the ownership interest of the shareholders (common and preferred) of a company, for this reason, shares are often known as equities

EXOTIC/HYBRIDThe most complex derivatives tailored and traded over-the-counter (OTC)

EXCHANGEA venue for companies to publicly and centrally offer their investment options to investors

FINANCIAL RESTRUCTURINGThe reorganization of a company’s finances; often employedwhen the company is experiencing financial difficulty

FIXED INCOMEDebt instruments of corporations, government or agenciescharacterized by a fixed interest rate and stated maturitydate. An example of a fixed income investment is a bond,because a bond regularly pays a fixed amount of money(interest) to its holder until maturity

FTSE 100/250Financial Times Stock Exchange – top 100/250 companiesby market value

FOREIGN EXCHANGE MARKET (FX)An over-the-counter market where buyers and sellerstrade the currencies of different countries, also referred to as a forex or FX market

FRONT OFFICEIs the area or function which relates to revenue generating(trading, investing or sales) activities for a financial firm

FUNDA pool of money to be invested, or a fiscal and accountingentity with self-balancing set of accounts

FUND MANAGERThe individual or team of individuals that manages a fundof stocks, bonds and other securities. The fund managerdecides when to buy or sell the securities held in the fund

FUTURES CONTRACTA legally binding agreement to buy or sell acommodity or financial instrument at a laterdate. They are standardized according to thequality, quantity, delivery time and location for each commodity, the only variable is price

PROJECT FINANCEA form of loan extension in which the interest paymentsand repayments in respect of the funds are made largelyor exclusively from the earnings of the investmentproject concerned

PROPRIETARY TRADINGWhen a bank trades in the financial markets with its owncapital to make more money for the business

PUT OPTIONThe right to sell shares at an agreed price on a future date (see call option)

RIGHTS ISSUEThe issue of equity to current shareholders in order to raise capital for the company
