Girl Scout Daisies sparkle with that “first time ever” newness in everything they do. They go on trips, learn about nature and science and explore the arts and their communities – and so much more. Girl Scout Daisies can also earn Learning Petals and receive participation patches.

Girl Scout Juniors are big-idea thinkers. They’re explorers at camp and product designers when they earn their Innovation and Storytelling badges, or even their Bronze Award. Every day, they wake up ready to play a new role.

Girl Scout Brownies work together, earn badges, and explore their community. Friendship, fun, and age-appropriate activities begin at the Girl Scout Brownie meeting and move out to the community and wider world. While earning badges, they build skills, learn hobbies, and have fun!

Girl Scout Cadettes chart their own course and let their curiosity and imagination lead the way. They learn about the power of being a good friend, gain confidence mentoring younger girls and can earn the Silver Award.

Girl Scout Seniors are ready to take the world by storm, and Girl Scouts gives them millions of ways to do it. Their experiences help to shape their world, while giving them a safe space to be themselves and explore their interests. Girl Scout Seniors can earn their Gold Award (which, by the way, adds something “extra” to college applications).

Girl Scout Ambassadors know that small acts create big change. While they get ready for life beyond high school, Girl Scouts helps them take flight. They also earn the Gold Award (which, by the way, adds something “extra” to college applications).

THE GIRL SCOUT UNIFORMUniforms are an important part of the Girl Scout experience, connecting girls to Girl Scout traditions, displaying their accomplishments, and creating memories to last a lifetime. Girls want to look and feel their best when representing Girl Scouts. And now they can, with uniform options that are in step with today's trends and active lifestyles. Girl Scouts at each level now wear one required element (tunic, sash, or vest) to display official pins and awards. Girls can mix and match pieces from the official Girl Scout collection to complete the uniform. Troop Leaders may opt to collect money from parents and purchase sashes, vests, and insignia from a council shop, or ask parents to purchase items on their own. Financial assistance for uniform components is available for girls that qualify.

Visit one of our shop locations to purchase uniforms, starter kits, and more. Our shop staff are here to help! Or shop online at shop.gswpa.org.

43COUNCIL SOCIAL MEDIA

HOW DO I GET MY GIRLS FEATURED?The Girl Scouts of Western New York council wants the whole world to know that your girls are amazing and the story of every G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)™ is important!

Send your photos or video to [email protected] and include the names of everyone in the photos, the story related to the photos, troop number(s), and city. Quotes and comments from girls are also very welcome. Each girl is required to have parent/guardian permission before submitting. If you have large batches of photos or a video that would be difficult to send over email, we recommend using DropBox. We prefer photos of girls in uniform, but it is not a requirement.

We’re happy to share stories about badge work, high awards (Bronze/Silver/Gold), fun patches, field trips, camp, special Girl Scout accomplishments, or whatever else your incredible girls are up to! We will share your content on the social media most suited to your submission, and in some cases, we might submit your story to the local news.

The council also reserves the right to use submissions for future marketing and public relations materials.

Facebook: Girl Scouts of Western New York Our Facebook page features a little bit of everything with a focus on matters concerning girls. We share girls’ stories and accomplishments within our council, quotes from inspiring women, fun STEM ideas, and so much more. This page is robust with content that you want to see!

Twitter: @girlscoutswny On Twitter we share quick tips, small stories, new products, and fantastic articles to create empowerment and awareness on matters concerning girls. We also use Twitter to communicate with other non-profits, businesses, sponsors, and Girl Scout members.

From breathtaking views of girls at camp on the 40-foot-high rope elements, selfies of girls posing with their families at the Gold Award, to opening a delicious box of Girl Scout cookies, you can expect stunning photos that put you in the essence of the moment.

Snapchat: @girlscoutswny Snapchat is where we go to have a little extra fun. Sometimes we let girls play with the filters. Sometimes you get a hilarious 5-second story about cookies. We like to keep it random.

Facebook: Girl Scouts of Western New York Alumni Association On our alumni page you’ll love seeing our throwback photos, reading reminiscent articles, and getting special information about alumni and lifetime member events.

Twitter: @JudyCranstonCEO Our CEO has her own Twitter! Besides staying connected with the amazing work performed by our girls and volunteers featured on our main account, Judy also shares articles and tools to help women and girls to feel encouraged and ready to take on the world.

Earthworks Aidless Navigation WorkshopThis was a journey that so many of our ancestors made, some seeking a new beginning and some even seeking their own freedom. Without the ability to purchase or read a map the key to survival is understanding natural navigation or reading signs in nature to determine cardinal direction. In this program, students are challenged to consider more than just using the North Star to help them navigate. For example, what might a freedom seeker need to do on a cloudy night? This workshop covers lots of fun and hands-on lessons including; how to establish cardinal directions (where is north? how do we know? what big geographical features are north in this region?), creating and practicing use of hand-drawn maps, a full-day excursion to practice aidless navigation outdoors using sundials, “story trails”, a scavenger hunt, and real-life journey through a forest to find our way back to ”freedom.” Girls will need to bring a bag lunch and dress for outdoor activities.

Girl Scout’s Promise: Digital Communication DayHave you ever wanted to create the perfect Snapchat story? How about making that killer meme? A GIF? An animated cartoon? How about creating that Youtube-ready video?

We believe that the best way to teach Scouts the importance of digital privacy and discretion is not through preaching but rather integrating this important message while showing them how to make engaging digital material.

This day will be spent showing them how to create digital content using phone and computer-based apps. Girls will need to bring their own phone or a parent’s phone. We will be having two divisions--one for younger and another for older scouts.

Girl Scout’s Promise: Dream It, Do It 500Teams of four will create their very own rubber band-powered car. Learn about science and engineering by competing with other Scout troops to win great prizes. In addition to competing on performance your team will create a marketing pitch. Go for the gold!

If you competed in last year’s competition, your team will move to a different category with cooler challenges. This year we have a brand new playoff system.

All Girl Scout Promise programs provide additional lesson packs for your troop at no additional cost. These build upon what your scouts are learning at the event. The cost of the event includes lunch and a patch. Scouts operate in their own division so your team will be eligible to compete in both the Scout’s division and the overall division--this doubles your chance of winning a great prize!

Troop and Service Unit Trips Girl Scouts love to travel - from the field trips they take as Brownies to the global adventures they go on as teens. If you love exploring different places and cultures, then Girl Scouts is the place for you. Through travel, girls gain enormous benefits. They develop self confidence and learn leadership skills by planning, earning money, and venturing to other countries or parts of the United States. They make lifelong friends—not only with the girls they travel with but new girls they meet along the way. They gain cultural insight, an appreciation for differences and similarities, and a broadened perspective. As girls mature in Girl Scouts, many consider travel one of the most exciting aspects of their membership.

When planning to travel as a troop make use of the GSWNY Troop Travel Guide found at gswny.org.

Need support for troop or service unit travel? Contact the Girl Experience team at [email protected]

40: UPCOMING CONTENT

Girl Scout Week: March 10-16, 2019 Earn the Girl Scout Week patch by celebrating Girl Scouting during the 2nd week of March! Earn the patch by participating (with the council, your troop, or individually) in at least three Girl Scouting activities that week.

HERE ARE SOME SUGGESTIONS!

Celebrate Girl Scout Sunday, March 10 or Girl Scout Sabbath, March 16

• Attend your place of worship in your uniform, work on your My Promise, My Faith Award, participate in a Scout’s Own, or sing a Girl Scout grace before a meal.

Celebrate Girl Scout’s 107th Birthday, March 12

• Plan a party to remember the day in 1912 when Juliette Gordon Low officially registered the first 18 girl members. You can read the story of Juliette Low, or honor her memory by working on a Girl Scout badge, journey or award.

Celebrate Girl Scouting• Sing Everywhere - learn some new Girl Scout songs or

teach a song to younger Girl Scouts.

• Girl Scout Traditions – try some badge activities from older Girl Scout handbooks.

• Girl Scout Swaps – learn about them, make them, and share them.

• Live the Girl Scout Promise & Law – do an activity that makes the world a better place.

Patches can be ordered through our GSWNY Girl Scout Shops.

NEED MORE IDEAS? Email The GSWNY Girl Experience Team at [email protected].

39: PATCH PROGRAMS

Outdoor Guru PatchGet Outdoors each Summer and earn your Outdoor Summer Guru Patch. Started in the Summer of 2018, girls can now participate in a variety of Summer Outdoor Activities in July and August and earn the Outdoor Guru Patch. Once earned, girls can earn the rocker leaf each summer to add to the patch. The list will change each summer so it is always fun and exciting. Can you complete the Outdoor Guru Challenge this summer? Activity Challenge list will be release at the end of June 2019 and patches will be available in September of 2019.

Scouting in SummerYour membership is year-round and so is the fun and excitement of Girl Scouting! All girls need to do to qualify for the Scouting in Summer patch is to participate in three Girl Scout-related activities during the summer months.

These activities can be done individually, as a troop, or as a part of a council-sponsored program such as day or resident camp. You can work on a Journey, badge or petals too! Any activity relating to Girl Scouting counts!

The Juliette program is Girl Scouting custom-made for you! It’s a great way to mix and match your unique interests with Girl Scout participation – special events, weekend workshops, leadership projects, or travel opportunities that improve your skills and meet your interests and needs.

Girl Scout Juliettes are busy, independent, self-confident girls and young women who want to be a part of something larger – Girl Scouts! Meeting in troops is one way to be a part of the Girl Scout experience, but when there aren’t available troops in your area, your troop no longer meets, or you become too busy with extracurricular activities or sports, becoming a Juliette will allow you to continue your Girl Scout experience on an individual basis.

The Juliette program is available to all girls in Kindergarten through 12th grade. It is especially popular for girls ages 11-17 who love the Girl Scout program but are very busy with other activities.

As a Girl Scout Juliette, you can participate in everything that is open to your grade level. You can attend Council-sponsored programs such as events, year-round camp experiences, and travel opportunities. You can also take part in Council-sponsored money-earning activities to help pay for Girl Scout events.

As a Juliette, you will work on Girl Scout programs with a parent or another adult mentor. You will decide what activities to participate in and which earned recognitions awards you wish to complete. Girl Scout Juliettes can earn the Journey awards and badges as well as the Girl Scout Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards.

Becoming a Girl Scout Juliette can help you continue your own personal leadership adventure!

You can access and download the Juliette Guidebook on our website using the search bar in the upper right and typing in: Juliette Guidebook.

41: JULIETTESthe Juliette Program Leader Trainings (New and Experienced)

This is a great training for all new leaders, as well as a great refresher for established experienced volunteers!

Join the Girl Experience Team to learn about the 3 keys and processes to the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. Learn how you can ensure girls are able to discover, connect and Take Action with all you do this Scout year.

What does Girl-Led, Learning by Doing, and Cooperative learning mean, and how can you implement these for your girls?

You will also learn about the Volunteer Tool Kit (VTK), and how you can use the VTK to plan your scout year. The Volunteer Toolkit is a digital planning tool that gives you resources and program content to get your year started—and keep it going smoothly! Best of all VTK is where ALL of the new STEM and outdoor program content is available.

The last part of this training will focus on progression in Girl Scouts. How can you ensure that there is progression in all things you do from the National Program to outdoor and Travel?

Using these skills will lead to true leadership skills for your girls!

All sessions are free of cost!Minimum/Maximum: 5/25
