People spend most of their time in the built environment therefore physical structure has a significant effect on their behaviour and well-being. My scope as an Interior Designer is to analyse and search in more depth the field of environ-mental psychology in order to create pleasant and enjoyable atmosphere in every design I make.

“Interior Design is an art when one con-sciously or unconsciously creates aes-thetic emotion in the atmosphere and when this environment produces well-being.”

I have made a lot of mistakes over the past 3 years however, these mistakes have taught me more than a th ousand books could. There are times when I have doubted myself and the validity of my ideas yet it is this doubt and continual self challenge that has allowed me to evolve as a designer.

The design process for me is a journey. I design from within the space itself, look-ing to create a mood rather than some-thing which is just visually pleasing. My designs take inspiration from the natural world, looking at how man made crea-tions interact with their surroundings and how this relationship can be incorporated in to the design of a space. I believe that natural light is one of the most important tools for creating spaces which merge seamlessly with their surroundings.

The number of cancer sufferers is rap-idly increasing and it is something that affects almost everyone from all walks of life, whether it is them directly or a loved one who is affected. Whilst ex-amining this topic I found that while the standard of medical care available to sufferers is high there is an insuffi-cient number of facilities that cater to the emotional and psychological as-pects that can often be brought about through the disease. For this project I have been focusing on the UK and more specifically Edinburgh. In Edin-burgh the main facility is the ‘Maggie’s’ cancer care centre, located directly opposite Edinburgh’s Western General Hospital in the city centre; it caters for anyone affected by cancer and offers an all round well counselling, wellbeing and therapy service. The Maggie’s cen-tre is unfortunately scheduled for clo-sure so I am proposing the creation of a new centre taking in to account the limiting factors that the current centre has.

My proposal attempts to solve these issues through design, the proposed centre will stay in keeping with the Maggie’s centre ethos, however at the same time the new centre should be able to detach it’s self from the Maggie centre brand in order to create a unique brand of its own.

As Maggie’s has been so successful over the years it is important to take inspiration from the centre, however it is equally important to improve not only the facilities but the overall ability of the centre to fulfil its mandate of improving quality of life and wellbeing for cancer sufferers.

My time at university has been like a 'roller coaster ride' full of peaks and troughs.

From once being no more than a novice with regards to design skills, and little knowledge of the design industry.

In three years of being at university and experiencing the design industry with placement, I now sense I am becoming an established designer.

Towards the end of my degree I believe I found my style or future style as a de-signer.

During a late project in the 3rd year of my degree I found that my key influence to being creative was nature herself. I adore being out and experiencing what's going on in the world but also just being surrounded by natural environments.

My love for nature makes me want to influence natural elements into my de-signs.

I have a huge amount of interest in vari-ous different types of design, such as TV & set design, architecture with game design and of course spatial design and architecture.

I am anxious to become a creator. I wish to help people thrive in appropriate and attractive environments. My intention was to learn to provide beauty that coin-cides with purpose. And believe this can be achieved through hard work and great effort accompanied with masses of en-thusiasm.

For me it is essential that aesthetics of design arise from function and simplicity. Design must incorporate different disci-plines in order to train the muscle of creativity and find cohesion between design and people. My final project is to give art students what they really need in order for them to become valuable de-signers. This is a life experience, observa-tion, inspiration and a fundamental edu-cation. My answer lies in designing the floating art school, a ship as a travelling campus, where the world’s destinations become your classroom.

"The most beautiful thing we can experi-ence is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed"

In life we are faced with challenges everyday where as some people would avoid challenges as a person and a designer I thrive when giving a challenge.

The people is who I design for, I don’t design just for something to just look visually pleasing. When designing I like to research and a as much as I can about the people who I am designing for and how my creativity and knowledge can help design a better environment for them. I am very passionate about a pro-ject as my knowledge on the subject increases.

You have to absorb what you see around you, what exists on the land, and then use that knowledge along with contemporary thinking to interpret what you see. Interior Design without inspiration is definitely an incomplete project. For me inspiration leads me from one idea to other spontaneously creating visually beautiful pieces. It is once said that en-hancing inspiration it is a remarkable sense of “rightness”. I am a passionate, visionary and capable interior designer able to give solutions and ideas and ac-complish projects to the fullest extent of my abilities.

A designer is an emerging synthesis of artist, inventor, mechanic, objective economist and evolutionary strategist.

Melissa Villiers BA Hons. Interior Design In terms of designing I am both creative and technical; I like to think of myself as a spatial problem solver. Interior design has the potential to improve the lives of the people within a space by creating an environment tailored to the needs of all user types. I have studied and worked across a range of project types; hospital-ity, commercial, residential, and mix-use developments, both large and small scale. I am versatile in using AutoCAD, Sketch-up, and other software packages. By working consistently either as part of a team or independently, I have the abil-ity to bring plans, ideas, concepts and processes into well defined visualisations and I am committed to carrying out work with precedence to clients’ needs and expectations.

Who am I ? What is my role as a de-signer ? What purpose can I serve ? Are my choices really going to affect other people ? Can my work connect to a stranger ? Can I help by designing ?

I want to be able to design spaces of connection, spaces where people inter-act , spaces of positivity and diversity. I want to be able to solve simple issues with creative solutions. I ironically still struggle to see myself as a creative per-son but after all this development espe-cially at University, I now understand that being creative is sometimes part of your personality. It shows in the way you han-dle everyday situations, the way you question things, the way you look at the world around you and the way you inter-act with others.

BA Hons. Interior Design

For the past four years whilst studying both a foundation Art and Design course and Interior Design BA (Hons) here at Salford, I have developed a lot which has had a profound effect on my designs. I am a very creative person and I take inspiration from a very wide base of sources such as: music; art; sculpture; and the environment. I am incredibly passionate about restora-tion, in the idea of giving historic build-ings a new lease of life. And I think that this shows in my work. I believe that a building that has been built well doesn’t need to be fussy and complicated but instead that simplicity and a well informed choice of materials and modern technologies can reveal the buildings true beauty. My final project embodies this perfectly by taking a building that once stood at the heart of the community, the town hall, and giving it a new purpose that is relevant to people’s wants and needs in todays society. But also gives the building back its sense of place. “To provide meaningful architecture is not to parody history but to articulate it.” — Daniel Libeskind. [email protected]

BA Hons. Interior Design

My work aims to combine interior design with architecture to achieve an optimum combination of beauty and functionality in an inspirational new way. I find inspi-ration in exploring many aspects of the brief, such as place and time and through lateral thinking. As a mature student, with an International Business degree and experience of several working envi-ronments, I have a sound business head on creative shoulders. I enjoy the proc-ess of translating ideas from initial con-cept stage to finished product, and am interested in pursuing a design career in industry, hoping to create a broad range of exciting interiors for a range of clients.

I hope to expand my skills of design and my computer techniques in the future and continue to strengthen my drawing abilities. I want to grow more as a de-signer and a person as well through ex-perience and different challengers to reach my full potential.

My dream would to be part of a major design where many people would admire my hard work and the building to be deeply connected to me.
