The ideal venue for that special occasion.

Well equipped kitchen and

Special rate of £45 for Children’s

parties off –peak.

Every single evening as I’m lying here in bed

This tiny little prayer keeps running through my head

God bless all my family wherever they may be, keep them

Warm and safe from harm for they’re so close to me.

And God, there is one more thing I wish you could do

I hope you don’t mind me asking. Bless my computer too.

Now I know that it’s not normal to bless a mother board,

But listen just a second while I explain to you, dear Lord.

You see, that little metal box holds more than odds and ends.

Inside those small compartments rest so many FRIENDS.

Lord, you know so much about them by the kindness that they give

And this little box of metal takes me in to where they live.

By faith is how I know them much the same as I do you.

We share in what life brings us and from that our friendship grows.

Please, take an extra minute from your duties up above,

To bless those in my address book that’s filled with so much love!

Wherever else this prayer may reach, to each and every friend,

Bless each and every mail box and the person who hits Send.

When you update your heavenly list on your CD-Rom

Remember each who’ve said this prayer sent up to God.com.

Amen.

MAGAZINE SURVEY

The advent of the Covid-19 pandemic has caused many organisations and

businesses within our society to adapt, improvise and diversify the way

they operate. The Church too, at local and national level, has used

technology and found different ways to minister, evangelise and serve the

parishes and communities for which they have responsibility, our own

included.

It has always been the intention of our parish magazine to communicate

not only the Christian Faith and the activities of our parish but also support

local business and community groups. The pandemic has prevented our

usual community wide distribution of this free magazine to 3900 homes

and although copies are available at Hatherley Post Office, it has

encouraged us to bring forward the idea of placing our magazine on-line,

via our parish website and Facebook.

The time has now come to survey our parish and community to ascertain

the viability and efficiency of our magazine in its present format. Therefore

we are asking readers to respond to the following:

1. I do / do not wish to receive a hard copy of the parish magazine.

2. I am happy to read the parish magazine via the parish website or

Facebook pages.

Please contact us, by 30th

November, giving your name and address, only

if you wish to continue to receive a hard copy, by emailing us at

[email protected] or responding via our

Website page. Alternatively you can return this form to the parish address

(page 2).

Whatever the outcome of the survey hard copies of our magazine will still

be available at Hatherley Post Office, Dundry Garden Centre and the

Parish Council.

Many thanks for your help.

Under One Roof Appeal—THANK YOU

A really big THANK YOU - To all who have responded to our ‘Buy a Tile’ appeal. We have had a very encouraging response and have virtually reached our target with just 110 tiles short of the 2500 tiles we hoped to fund. We are keeping the ap-peal open until the end of November so it is not too late to help us get there. If you can help please complete the form overleaf and send it to my home address (page 2) or place it in the church letter box addressed to the church treasurer. To all those who have helped with our fundraising efforts. The Silver Threads and their Leap Year Concert, The Tuesday Choir Group for their concerts and film night, to all who help with the Silent Auction, our organ-ists, the Classic Wind Quintet and Sarah Mcquaid for their entertaining concerts in their church. To the Charitable Trusts who have come to our help The Church Union The Gloucestershire Historic Church Trust The All Churches Trust The Garfield Weston Trust The Number One Trust To the individuals who have given personal donations and bequests, quite separate from the various appeals that we have had, some in memory of loved ones. So by the time you read this the scaffolding will be down and the roof and rainwater services complete. It has been a long hard haul and a relief to cross the finishing line. We are grateful to D.A.Cook Ltd, the contractors, who have been most helpful in undertaking the work and to David Arnold, the architect, who, as project manager, kept things ticking over. We have received several comments about how splendid that church looks from the road now that the new tiles are on the roof and let us hope that everything remains dry inside for the next 100 years. Thanks again. Bill Sargison Treasurer.

Up Hatherley Parish Council

I reported last month that there was a fantastic response

to our consultation about improvements to parks, open

spaces and volunteering. At our meeting this month we

will be making some decisions about how to progress the open spaces

project, but in the meantime I am sad to report that residents in Broad

Oak Way have been the victims of some particularly menacing arson

attacks when on two consecutive Thursday evenings, the hedgerow on

the boundary with the houses was set alight using an accelerant and

flames were sent leaping into the air. The Fire Brigade were quick to

respond and have been active in visiting residents following these

attacks as well as working with the local businesses selling the fuel to

the arsonists. It is essential for everyone’s safety that the culprits are

identified and dealt with. In the same period there has been some

major littering of pathways close to the Hillview centre. This is a very

worrying trend, even if only a small number of people are involved.

At our next (virtual) meeting we will also make a decision about how to

manage our Christmas Eve Carol service on Fernleigh Green – a popular

and well attended tradition. Clearly, we cannot encourage a large

gathering with singing on the green or share in hot mulled wine but we

are going to see what is possible. Presently, the plan looks like we will

get the lights on to the tree a few days before Christmas Eve so the

Green looks festive and, as with previous years, encourage children to

make decorations for the tree. We are still hoping that the Salvation

Army will play music for half an hour but we need to see how this can

be done in a Covid-safe way. One of the possibilities may involve the

band marching so that residents can listen from the safety of their own

homes. Another idea involves filming it. Thinking caps are on!

We are saying goodbye to two of our Parish Councillors Bob Wilcox and Richard Johnes, who has contributed a huge amount during his 6 years with us. This leaves us with vacancies so if anyone is feeling community spirited, then we would love to hear from you.

Father’s Mark…..

The summer is over and the winter looms large but not today at the time of writing. Today the temperature here in this house has been close to 80 degrees, not very conducive to turning thoughts to November however turn they must for there is much to ponder.

This month begins with the great day of All Saints, followed of course by All Souls, back to back celebrations of great joy, thinking and interceding with the Holy Ones of past years including perhaps very recent beacons to heavenly glory to then more sombre consideration of those gone before us some known personally to us. This great celebration, often tinged perhaps with sorrow yet holding before us the promise of a joyful future with our Lord in a sense prepares us for Remembrance services, thanksgiving for lives served in defense of our homeland.

To say again the Summer is over and thus our worship framed within our Christian year ends not as it used to with Sundays after Trinity or even Ordinary Time but with a far greater victorious celebration of Christ the Universal King. Which places our Lord exactly where he should be in our minds and hearts that is above all other loyalties. It is then that we seriously in worship sense a change of gear for we celebrate Advent Sunday the very beginning of our Christian year our walk with our Lord.

And now at the very end of November we recall and celebrate the day of another great follower of the Lord and patron of the Scots, Andrew the Apostle.

We cannot end without a mention of the repairs to our Church. I’m informed that they are continuing at a pace hopefully aided by the favourable weather. It has been an experience for all who attended mass in the Church Centre and I must congratulate Fr. Mark for his adaptation of the communication system so that many who wish to join us can do so.

May God bless you all,

Father David

If children live with criticism,

They learn to condemn.

If children live with hostility, They learn to fight.

If they live with ridicule,

They learn to be shy.

If children live with shame, They learn to feel guilty.

If children live with tolerance,

They learn to be patient.

If children live with encouragement They learn confidence.

If children live with praise, They learn to appreciate.

If children live with fairness,

They learn justice.

If children live with security, They learn to have faith.

If children live with approval, They learn to like themselves.

If children live with acceptance

Gardening News

The month of October, offered prelude to the changing sea-

son and now autumn is upon us. Already the air carries the

scent of aging decline, tumbled leaves litter the garden and

there is a dampness to everything. I have already spent a

good amount of time cleaning up. I think that the warmth and wet of the

early season made for some luxuriant growth as I can’t really see where

the leaves have come from. The month ahead is going to be busy. Apart

from the cleaning up, November is a good planting month, especially if you

need bare root items. There will hedging about shortly and in a state of

near dormancy it will transplant smoothly. Formal and informal stock is

about, with everything from native field plants, like hawthorn and maple to

beech, and laurel. Soft fruit is about too, with I suspect many looking for

Raspberries, which generally have performed well again this year. And

Blueberries, which seem to have had big television exposure. Modern

varieties do very well actually and can be grown in containers. Blueberries

will prefer a slightly acidic condition, so consider using some ericaceous

compost or in season a suitable feed. Roses too are about now and for

many centres, offered for the first time since the lockdown. In the

vegetable garden you can still be planting onions, garlic and shallots as

well as rhubarb crowns. The shallots enjoy the cold, which encourages

early division, delivering good clumps of bulbs in the spring. If you have

not put in some overwintering Broad Beans, your hesitation has delivered

you to the perfect moment. For the purposes of overwintering Broad

beans are best sown between the last week of October and the second

week of November. Sown earlier you can end up with stalky plants before

Christmas which will not enjoy cold weather. If you can offer some shelter

then winter lettuce and oriental vegetables are also worth a go.

On the flower front, get cracking and lift any bedding that you may wish to

over winter, Pelargoniums,Begonias and Dahlias are salvageable ahead

of the frost. They can be allowed to dry and then will need storing in a

shed, garage or greenhouse. Or can be potted to bring late colour inside.

And finally there is still time to pop in some over wintering bedding and

bulbs, but you need to get a move on. Buy big plants in pots or 6 packs to

ensure winter resilience.

Happy Gardening

It has certainly been a very eventful year for us all and none

more so than the Lakeside Primary School community.

The 2019-20 academic year will be forever remembered

as the COVID-19 year which saw the partial closure of the school and a real shift

in focus with the support of key workers and vulnerable pupils. However, the

school also had many successes – the development of our curriculum with read-

ing at the heart; the development of our grounds with the new clamber stack and

play area and an Ofsted grading of ‘Good’ in all areas following the school inspec-

tion in January 2020. This was a massive achievement for the Lakeside Primary

community and reflected the effort made by staff, parents, and pupils to put the

school back on the map. This has given us a real platform from which to build

from.

The new academic year has now started with the full opening of the school to all

of our pupils. We have worked extremely hard to create a school environment

which feels as close to ‘normal’ but also one which meets the government guid-

ance for limiting the risk of COVID-19. We have seven clearly defined year

group bubbles, clear one-way systems, staggered drop-off and pick-up times,

regular hand washing and enhanced hygiene. The overriding belief from every-

one is that it is so important to have the children back in school after a long ab-

sence and it has been personally pleasing to see the smiles on faces as the chil-

dren readjust to school routines. We have also welcomed a new reception intake

to school and they have all settled really well. I have seen a real growth in their

independence already and I know that this will give the children a really good plat-

form for the rest of the year.

At this time of year, we would also be holding open days and evenings for per-

spective parents. As a result of COVID-19 restrictions, we are unable to hold face-to-

face meetings so will be posting videos on our school website. If you are a new

parent looking for a school on an upward trajectory, please take a look at our

school website – www.lakesidechelt.co.uk

Finally, I am very aware of the issues that are caused by poor parking at the start

and end of the school day. After discussions with the Parish Council and Local

Authority, it has been really pleasing to see parking enforcement officers present

at the end of the school day. This is clearly making a difference.

Thank you for your on-going support and I wish you all good health in these un-

certain times.

Jo Wheeler has set her heart on marrying Sidney Sheppard.

Now he’s dead in a freak fall in Gloucester Cathedral.

The two of them had such great plans for the future that

someone must pay for her disappointment.

Jo is convinced that Sidney’s wife Marjorie is to blame.

Except Jo’s increasingly erratic behaviour convinces the

police that she is the killer.

But who’s the mysterious witness she saw at the scene

of the crime? Why won’t anyone believe he is stalking

her?

Jo must prove she’s right about Marjorie before she, too,

suffers. But is Sidney the man she thought he was?

What happened on his honeymoon five years ago for his

bride to take revenge now?

Is Marjorie really Jo’s sworn enemy, or is she her saviour?
