Anne Lorraine is an elegant name that deserves an elegant personality. It pretty much fits Anne to a tee at first glance. That is, until she moves and speaks. “Every place is a marketplace” seems to be her motto in life. She drinks from everyone’s cup, eats from everyone’s plate, and (horrors!) punctuates Socratic class recitation with “churva-churva!”, which stunned Professor Harry Roque in Consti Law! That she gets away unscathed from all these antics is a testament to her charm and lovable nature. Anne deftly downplays her intelligence by her usual inanities. But we suspect that her brilliance may just transform jologs into high art. Anne is intensely private but when she opens up beyond her advertised exterior, you will find, pleasantly, that she is one perfectly-baked Bisaya bun: the right mix of wit, humor, and daring, rolled into a generous dough of optimism and heart. A keeper indeed!

Generosity, affection and care for her friends come out naturally from Pie, so much so that she’d do everything she can in order to protect them when the need arises. These make her a very special friend, one as rare as diamond—the kind you’d definitely choose to keep.

One must be a very special person to have transcended personal issues for higher aspirations; to have had that strong will to overhaul a character long confined in a comfort zone; and to have kept portions of consideration for family and friends in everyday dealings. It is quite undeniable that Pie meets those premises above. What other conclusion is there then, other than the fact that she is, indeed, a very special person.

If law school was a concert, Carlo will definitely be the rock star. Not that rock is his genre, he’s more of a balladeer crooner with his swooning crystal-clear tone that makes anyone fall in love with him. He has a rock star attitude, minus the usual diva-ness. He is so cool when he recites, he uses his vocal dynamics as if he was already arguing infront of a judge. He has a steady fan-base, not only from his singing, but from always being there for his batchmates and friends for anything under the sun: love, legal and life in general. Law school also never stopped him from sports and gaming, but can still balance it with various internships, RA-ships and LSG. It won’t be surprising if there’ll be posters of him in bedrooms of future law students, wishing they’ll be as cool as him when it’s their turn on-stage.

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

1. Have We not expanded thee thy breast?—2. And removed from thee thy burden

3. The which did gall thy back? —4. And raised high the esteem

(In which) thou (art held)?5. So, verily, with every difficulty, there is relief:

6. Verily, with every difficulty, there is relief.7. Therefore, when thou art free

(from thine immediate task), still labor hard,8. And to thy Lord turn (all) thy attention.

~ Al-Inshirah or “”The Expansion”” (S.94 A.1-8, Qur’an)

Indeed, whatever difficulty I encountered during the study of law, You provided relief. After the difficulty, and with it. In gratitude, I will continue to strive. In Your name.

Sufia Inshirah, my beloved daughter, I had you while in law school, and you have been to me as what your name means. I love you.”

‘In a time when people tear themselves to pieces with ambition and nervousness and covetousness, they are relaxed. All of our so-called successful men are sick men, with bad stomachs, and bad souls, but Mack and the boys are healthy and curiously clean. They can do what they want. They can satisfy their appetites without calling them something else.’ This speech so dried out Doc’s throat that he drained his beer glass. Richard Frost said: ‘I think they’re just like anyone else. They just haven’t any money.’ ‘They could get it,’ Doc said. ‘They could ruin their lives and get money. They’re all very clever if they want something. They just know the nature of things too well to be caught up in that wanting.’

Donna loves witty jokes, breakfast, dogs, road trips, musicals, Japanese boybands, and the beach. She grew up to Disney movies, anime, and The Baby-Sitters Club, which she suspects has shaped much of who she is now. She is absent-minded and restless, but always hopeful. She owes much of what remains of her sanity to Taylor Swift and Arashi, who kept her company through countless nights of SCRA and codals, to her blockmates, who have made law school a happy place, and to her family, who always supported her and never let her quit no matter what. She still dreams of opening a bakeshop or a pet store someday, but she wants to give her best shot in this lawyering thing too.

I never settle: three words, one Francis Alvin Asilo.

A law student and trader at Bangko Sentral, Francis showed that chasing two butterflies can be done. He would arrive in class looking harassed from the MRT-LRT commute, nonetheless he can still be counted on during recitation. He endured having almost permanent eyebags from waking up at 5am to work at 7. Three years.

Three years, six semesters after, Francis settled. Not because it’s difficult, but because it had to be done. He left BSP and became a minimum wage earner. Pursuing odd jobs – transcription to photo booths – he told me that his competitive advantage is low price, guaranteed results strategy. Not! Francis’ competitive advantage has been the fact that he is determined and focused as hell. Two years.

Someday I know Francis would settle, but not without putting up a fight and only because he wanted to.

“Noel Baga a.k.a the Batman. Studies law with passion and dedication to serve the people. Behind his loner-type persona is a gentle and compassionate person who just wants to enjoy the simple things in life.” - William Radaza

“Do not be fooled by the shy, unassuming exterior of Noel Baga for beneath the horned-rimmed glasses lies a man with such depth and character, he would put the greatest of heroes to shame. A comic-book aficionado, it comes as no surprise that Noel is as close as we can get to a real-life superhero. With his passion for justice, acute sense of honor and the fiery heart of a champion, Noel boldly goes where no other man would dare to tread. Armed with his idealism and desire for change, Noel will surely make waves as he sets out to conquer the world beyond the halls of Malcolm.”

Sum of 4 years:

I am a student and a teacher. The loved and the unloved. The pursuer and the pursued. I am the doting mother and the needy child, the repentant sinner and the resolute villain. I topped the class while remaining at its bottom. I am an uno, dos, tres, quatro and a cinco. I fought against domestic violence and became its victim. I studied until morning and came to class unprepared. I drank coffee while pining for tea. I lost a sister and gained many more. I walked with kings while marching on the streets. I led while following. I defied the norms in order to conform. I laughed with tears in my eyes and cried for joy. I have humbled myself by bragging. I am everything and I am nothing.Through it all, I have remained true to myself, to my calling and to my God.

“Sheryl is not your cliche. How else to consider the way she carries herself - always businesslike but effortlessly chic? Or how she comes rushing to class in stilettos, with big totes bursting with books and cases, as though she had not come from work? She, too, speaks ever so softly and gently, if whisperingly. Yet she commands attention the moment she recites as though daring listeners to cerebrate.

And for those who truly know her, Sheryl has a bleeding heart – that much about her must already be coming out of her friends’ ears. She’s not one to bail on those who need her comfort and prayers.

Yes, Sheryl is going to be a lawyer of a definite kind. The kind that’s focused and no non-sense. The kind that thinks with a clear mind and feels with a good heart for what may not always be convenient but is surely just.“

Anna is the opposite of what she thinks of herself. She says she’s not a nerd, but her grades say otherwise. She says she’s impatient, but enduring eight hours in court just to accompany a friend is more patience than most people can give. She pretends to be a heartless bully, but loves all her friends with much commitment nonetheless.

Anna survived four years of law school by laughing her way through anything. Her smile remains forever genuine because she’s smart enough to know that any challenge can be a conquest. Finding strength in her roots – her father’s advice, her mother’s guidance and her siblings’ company – Anna continues to flourish, not only in her academics, but most importantly, in her relationships with others. She is selfless and giving, and her happiness lies in the happiness of those around her. And with this, she has made her mark.

Diana? Well.

About her, the threads of conversation are always vibrant. Bright red with passion, blue for the undercurrent of her strength, hot green for that tinge of envy. And yes, for her hair too. Long, silky, inky black that absorbs life greedily and releases it in rash orange to a world that sometimes resents the face of unapologetic courage.

Not her, though. The theme of her life is movement. And her motion does not fade into shades and shadows but would streak through the consciousness of her family and friends leaving something indelible and something maddening but always, always warm.

When the threads are pulled and the colors have blended, the most crucial question, the gist of the thesis, the nexus of Diana is this:

Kring’s most remarkable trait, which is both her best and her worst, is her simplicity. Very few make up the list of things she takes interest in –such as post-it notes, Chinese supplements and strong coffee. Her plain and straightforward way of saying things makes her appear either dismissive or fearsome. She often thinks of herself as average. She works hard as a consequence, and she delights in the idea of achieving something with personal effort. She is simple even in her ambitions that it is uncertain whether it comes from stubbornness or determination. Kring is simple; it is the trait through which her friends see her as strong, beautiful and admirable.

Rare are the people who can effortlessly deal with the spectrum of personalities. Hence, Sen is rare.

Sen is the kind of person you can easily say “hi” to along the corridor, or exchange gossips with before class starts or during breaks, or be upfront with on issues of public importance, or confide in matters of personal concern, or simply hang out with while listening to some cheesy music. She has this super-extensive social wavelength that allows her to relate and empathize with people, far more than an ordinary person can. Though not radically confrontational, she is able to convey her message across with the least amount of tension and collateral damage, and with just the right amount of color to lighten things up. These qualities make her an all-time favorite of her friends.

What could not be emphasized more is her special love for family and friends. You will be amazed at how this love allows her to give second chances and turn new pages.

Our dear daughter,

Our joyous congratulations to your forthcoming graduation in April 2011. We take pride in you for being among the few who successfully entered the University of the Philippines College of Law and earned the noblest degree, Juris Doctor, from the most prestigious law school of the country. Earning law degree is, however, one thing; passing the bar examination is another thing, and yet active practice of law is entirely a new thing.

We look forward to your bar review in preparation for the 2011 bar examinations. Your graduation should not be the end of your journey towards your ardent desire to be a competent and effective barrister. Continue your study of the laws and jurisprudence that will enable you to pass the bar examinations and be a good Christian lawyer a couple of years from now.

Once again congratulations.

Your loving Dad and Mama,

Francis and Irene

People often dream of doing great deeds, thrilling adventures and pushing boundaries. The reality most people face however is that lofty goals and expectations get lost in a haze of empty words and hopeful “what-ifs”. In an age of reality shows and instant millionaire lottery jackpots, the courage to fulfill dreams becomes an exception rather than a rule. Joyce’s Law Degree, while it may be lost or half-remembered for most people in the long years to come, will always be a celebration of that exception to those who love her most.

Pauline Agatha Caspellan. (n) Also known as “Pau, that long-legged girl” in other jurisdictions, is a surprising phenomenon which remains outside the bounds of human expectation. Pau mixes the legal1, social2 and physical3 principles in a manner that is not dense at all. In fact, a lot of male scholars are attracted to Pau, but this phenomenon has evaded them well.4 Nevertheless, Pau remains to be one of the friendliest phenomena around.5 There is, however, one nasty derivative of this gorgeous body—the Pau virus6, a virus so deadly, those infected forget their belongings in the most unusual places. That aside, scholars are banking that Pau’s passion and proactivity will make a big difference in the world.7

“Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, for He alone has all wisdom and power. World events are under His control. He removes kings and sets others on their thrones. He gives wise men their wisdom, and scholars their intelligence. He reveals profound mysteries beyond man’s understanding. He knows all hidden things, for He is light, and darkness is no obstacle to Him. PhiSci, as he was fondly called by our Constitutional Law I professor, shocked most of his first year batch mates as he was bold enough to converse with professors as if he was on the same plane as they were. That Marc is brilliant is a proposition seldom contested, even by his professors.

But Marc is not a nerd. He did not let law school prevent him from exploring his passion – Human Rights. He found his niche, and his second family, in the UP Institute of Human Rights. To his IHR family, Marc is a leader, manager and doer. They often tout him as the next director of the institute because of his immense love for the advocacy.

Marc may be the champion in the brains department but to his friends what makes him shine more is his capability to inspire people, with his pure heart without distrust.

Without a doubt, Marian possesses the fiercest smile UP Law has ever witnessed. Most of the time her beaming smile is concealed beneath the mask of a timid and unassuming student who curiously sifts through piles of books and cases, but whenever she meets a friend, her smile will glow like nothing anyone has seen before. Truly, she stands out like no one else — creatively and intellectually at the same time. She knows how to carry a good conversation or discuss any wild topic very well with much ease, as confidence is her charm. She can be the life of a party, the name of the game, or the diamond among rubies. Beyond the stellar persona she carries, she is a true friend who doesn’t really care whether she stands out or simply blends in.

If by chance you meet Marian, give her a smile. And you’ll see a star.

Like a child, Happy is an idealistic person; she may compromise on certain matters, but she sticks with her non-negotiables. Like a child, she joyfully faces each day of her life, despite lack of sleep due to reading cases, finishing her deliverables or doing volunteer work. And like a child, she never forgets to pay respect to her elders.

Nonetheless, although Happy may be child-like on some points, she is never childish. She is always tactful in her relations with other people. She always fulfills her obligations. And she truly sees the socio-political evils around her, and exerts her best effort to help out in her own special way. But, at the end of the day, she still knows how to celebrate life and be happy just like her name.

Jeric is an ideal family man: a loving and obedient son, a sweet brother, and a cool uncle. He has the amazing ability to juggle law school, work, family, friends and love life (this we are not so sure about, haha). While some people may already crumble in this type of pressure, Jeric maintains composure. He knows when to push himself and when to pause for rest.

He also has a knack for telling corny jokes and anecdotes, which have through time, grown to be more endearing and distinctly “Jeric.” His friendly banters are his own way of making his friends feel very special without being too cheesy. But then again his cheesiness still shines through.

That’s Jeric: he loves with intensity, argues with per-severance, loses with grace and humility, and takes in failures with fervent hope.

Like most people her age, an early introduction to impeachment proceedings, and frequent exposure to courtroom dramas and legal fiction, not to mention, paternal influences, are just some factors that ultimately convinced her that she wanted to follow her dad’s footsteps and become a lawyer herself. This she set out to do, forgoing enrollment at a pre-med course, and signing up instead for a pre-law/business degree, and later on, a Juris Doctorate.

Her path to realizing this dream has been forged by a grim determination to disprove other people’s notions of who she is and what she is capable of. It comes easy for anyone to dismiss her as just another pretty face with an unassuming demeanor. But wait ‘til she blows you away with her random sense of humor and her knockout flair for dancing.

World, better watch out, this girl definitely has more surprises up her sleeve!

The lawyer and the philosopher have something in common. To them, answers never come easy, but questions often do. They know very well the uncertainties of their respective fields. Yet, they persevere to find better solutions to existing problems. They are fueled by that personal satisfaction in being able to use one’s faculties in order to provide meaningful alternatives.

As aptly put by Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes (The Path of the Law), “[a]n intellect great enough to win the prize needs other food beside success. The remoter and more general aspects of the law are those which give it universal interest. It is through them that you not only become a great master in your calling, but connect your subject with the universal and catch an echo of the infinite, a glimpse of its unfathomable process, a hint of the universal law.”

Since law school is pretty much a depressing place to be in, Dianne has done and made me do things which, I have to admit, are enough to turn monotonous days into awesome ones. Some of them we have expressly declared not to remind each other of after we leave our beloved school, and will be left at that. (No, this does not involve having any romantic inclinations towards each other, whatsoever!) Some of them, however, are the most absurd things you could think of such as going back and forth the 1st and 3rd floors of the library in 3-inch heels, dressing up just to feel great, different eyeshadow shades everyday, scoping out the library for cute and hot guys, and pretty much every little bit of craziness one could think of! Law school would have definitely sucked without you. Thanks for rocking my world, Dianne Caroline Ducepec!

The journey which lies ahead has only just begun. It will be so amazing and exciting that it also can, sometimes, be scary. If you embrace the universe and let it lead you, you will live the life you ever wanted to live. Never lose trace, never get distracted and never change who you are - denn du bist ein Geschenk des Universums and die Menschheit.

On that note, stay smart & spiritual, energetic & powerful, beautiful & passionate, restless & without a sense of direction.

Three memorable things his UP Law teachers told him through the years:

1. “Is that even English?!” He fondly recalls his first recitation in class.2. “You don’t need the lights on. Continue reciting.” And he had to grope his way in the dark, literally.3. But with hard work, great attitude and lots of luck: “Fantastic!”

Mich is not just the insanely smart consistent-number-one-student-in the-batch that most people in the college know her as. She’s the person who gives me her precious study time for absolutely absurd things such as standing in the hallway waiting for an eye candy, talking about boys (and tequila as a cure) until the wee hours of the morning, discussing the merits of digital perms and hair products, and going around the mall for hours looking for that perfect pair of shoes. She’s also the person who tells me that my eye bags need to be concealed, that my hair needs to be combed, and that I need a jacket because my dress is too revealing. Most of all, Mich has taught me that life is best lived when shared, and that love and friendship are at its best when completely given. – Dianne Caroline Ducepec

The RRAFs and Service Reports at the Office of Legal Aid have nothing on Sherwin’s Forms for Digests and Reviewers. These unique forms, which are must-haves for students of law (but which have yet to be made available to the general public) are representative of the creativity, style, and meticulousness that set Sherwin apart. These enable him --- and sometimes even his seatmates --- to remain poised under extreme pressure. Such expertise in organization is perhaps the secret to his ability to efficiently keep up with the demands of studies and work, while still having the time to finish papers for advocacy, and to sneak to the mall or some nearby island over the weekend to relax, have fun, and gracefully start a new busy week. Whoever said chic and functionality don’t mix has surely not seen Sherwin’s Forms yet, and whoever thought that being in the legal profession entails getting stressed often would be proven wrong once he meets Sherwin.

Karen is the epitome of that Gary Valenciano song The Warrior is a Child. Throughout law school Karen has fought battle after battle of terror profs, stress-induced sicknesses, and unmet deadlines. Karen has gained the respect and admiration of friends and batchmates because she not only emerged victorious in each battle but she even came out at the top of the battlefield.

However, Karen’s deepest beauty can be seen when she lays her armor down. Deep inside, Karen is a gentle princess needing and worthy to be protected. Her easy laughter, soap opera addictions, kaladkarin tendencies, loyal friendship, yaya’s cooking, and endearing naivete for all things “masa” complete the package of why friends would fiercely stand beside her.

Indeed Karen will accomplish greatness in her lifetime and those who invest in sharing in her inner armor moments will count it their honor to fight alongside this warrior princess.

I’ve heard it said that graduation is too important a milestone to allow it to become a mere leaving of a time that can never be again. So it deserves to be shared with my mother, who has always been selfless in giving me the love and support I needed and will still be needing in the years to come.

My mother was twelve when the Second World War broke out. It was a time when kindness from the human race was rare. Yet she grew into a bleeding heart. And because the war came unannounced—news of detonations over Hiroshima and Nagasaki reached the countryside long after the mushroom clouds had dissolved—she insists that we always prepare for eventualities, the cataclysmic kind especially. She’d be happy to know that tenderness and vigilance go together in the practice of law. She’ll feel right about me doing advocacy.

Cheers, Ma.

The halls of Malcolm are often lined with dread but Rommel is someone who never fails to brighten the place with laughter. He is definitely the life of the party with his witty jokes, professor imper-sonations, and bulging biceps. But he’s also a con-siderate friend who knows how to make a crying classmate laugh, give friends ten reasons to smile in one afternoon, and make you pause from studying so he can pay you a compliment. While he may be popular for his humor, Rommel’s dedication to his studies is worthy of emulation. He’s easily found in the library scouring the SCRA shelves and digesting cases by hand. His good grades show that his vo-racity for learning certainly paid off. Rommel’s easy charm and unwavering diligence have earned him both the affection and respect of his friends and these will also certainly ensure him greatness in his chosen profession.

There exists in Fats, a certain contradiction that results in a beautiful complexity of being. On the one hand, there is Fats the sweet, caring, intelligent and happy individual. This is the part that most people encounter. She has a certain quality that is most aptly seen in her movement and gestures. That they have in them a certain softness peculiar to most. On the other hand, there is a deeper, more complex side of her. And it is this facet of her that gives her gravitas; A depth of being. An ability to determine matters as important and the capacity to be immersed in them, both on an intellectual and emotional level.

She is a lover of life and the good things, an avid fan of the arts and culture. She has built genuine rela-tionships based on love with her family and friends. A true daughter of U.P.

Mark is not nice.

He will not carry you when you fall flat on your face, but will laugh with you while you dust yourself off. He would not always say “hi” when you meet him in the hall, but he’d be there side-by-side with you when you need to break a wall. You need not even call. He does not sugar-coat a situation just to pro-tect your feelings. He will give you the real deal, even if it hurts.

In a world full of nice guys, what we need are people like Mark who would not shelter us from the truth, no matter how terrible, because he knows we can handle it. We need people to share and laugh off those moments with. We need someone who would stand by our side not just in good times, but especially in bad ones.

Mark is not nice.

He is real.

Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it.

Dwight D. Eisenhower Luis is a leader who does not approve of microman-aging. His business is not just to delegate tasks but to assess the field, get the best people, and make them lead their own projects as he directs the team to its vision. He allows the person to do his or her own job. It is just important that you communicate to him because he does not want making assump-tions out of your non-communication. For the long talks, hitch rides, gifts, lunches and dinners, for working with me on a lot of projects inside and outside of law school, for sharing the passion and the vision, for being a good friend and work partner, for just being sweet, thank you Luis. Cheers to a great future!

Jen is a friend who simply listens and makes you feel she’s there for you even without uttering a word, and a humble achiever to boot who’ll definitely give other future lawyers a run for their money. – Phoebe, friend/blockmate

Jhen is such a wonderful sister. She is very sweet and caring. I have always admired her wit and intelligence. I know she will go a long, long way. We are truly blessed to have her. – Rhoda, sister

Never too big for her britches like most, she candidly told the interview committee that it was just Ally McBeal who lured her to law school. Her admission letter left her in shock weeks after.

Thanks to her job at a broadsheet, her writing skills proved useful in exams. Moonlighting as a vocalist at obscure Katipunan bars meanwhile helped her conquer recit/stage fright quickly enough. Freshman year saw her juggling a dozen things, pulling all-nighters to cram and still getting a flat 1 in her Crim exam.

She left law school to volunteer in England and Mindanao, but returned only more determined to be a lawyer who’ll do good and do it well.

She’s currently a law student, fledgling entrepreneur, on-call TV backup singer and a senior associate at a social enterprise. Consequently, Carla hasn’t slept for 5 years. But never mind that. The ‘bend and snap’ works every time.

To say that Roland is funny is an understatement. Gifted with all the sense of humor one can possibly possess, he never fails to bring Malcolm Hall down with his witty remarks and antics. A happy-go-lucky, he is the best person to go to when you want to forget your awful recit or your pitiful bluebook -- not just because he will make you laugh but because he always has a way of making people see the brighter side of things.

If Roland is already great being a good friend, he is even better being a good son. His Nanay would often tell his friends that Balong (her nickname for Roland) has never given her any problem and that she is very grateful to God for him.

Indeed, Roland is a blessing, not only to his Nanay but to everyone else. But then again, saying that Roland makes everyone around him happy is simply another understatement.

Francesca Noelle, oftentimes called “Cesca” by most of her friends is the “Elle Woods” of UP Law. People get the impression that she’s the best person to go to when you need a fashion fix, which is indeed true, but she’s also much more than that. Behind those fancy earrings and high heels is a very endearing and intelligent woman with the courage of an ideal UP graduate. She can be serious when necessary and is always ready to lend a listening ear. Accomplished and an achiever in her own right, she does not forget to have fun amidst the long and sleepless academic nights. An easy pull to any beach outings and the winner in any photo quantity contest, Cesca is living proof that the greatest things come in small packages. Despite her many blessings in life, her feet remain firmly planted on the ground.

I’ve known Gayle for a long time but we’ve never been good friends, not until recently. Who would have thought that this girl who quite frankly I thought to be ‘maldita’ would become an esteemed colleague, a trusted confidant and a loyal friend. It was Gayle who saw me through while going through a rough patch back in freshman year. And she has been there ever since. It is those moments when surprised by her humanity, I come to love and appreciate Gayle more. While she is definitely a force to reckon with, Gayle is also a source of com-passion. Passionate with her cause and certainly unapologetic, Gayle has always been such a strong character. But people who are closest to her can attest to her softheartedness. A doting mother to Clark and Kristen and a wife to John, Gayle has ably managed to juggle work, school and life.

It’s easy to say that these words describe Rania: kind, generous, smart. But it’s harder to grasp these words’ full meaning. True kindness isn’t the shallow politeness of people afraid to make a scene. It’s the empathy that comes from the desire to understand and accommodate each person. True generosity has nothing to do with the extravagance of giveaways and everything to do with the easy openness to share one’s thoughts, time, and things. A truly smart person is less concerned with gaining numbers on a piece of paper, and more concerned with gleaning the lasting truth behind words gone stale with overuse.

A hundred words to describe a person aren’t much, but three are more than enough if you truly understand them.

It’s easy to say that Rania is one of the best people to have on your side, but it’s harder still to enumerate all the moments when having a kind, generous, smart friend makes all the difference.

Law school is the one place you’d start to doubt the goodness of man. Which is why meeting Blanca amidst a seemingly hopeless world is nothing short of experiencing grace. Her company exudes cozi-ness and warmth. She inspires optimism, not only because of her intelligence, but more because of her capability to love and give herself selflessly. She has always insisted on giving everyone a fair go, no matter what, despite the times she herself had been treated unfairly. Most endearing is her ability to laugh and cry all at the same time, because in her serene heart lies an innate capacity to see goodness in the things around her.

(Ano kaibahan nun?) Well, ang kutitap, yung liwanag nito ay hindi nagmumula sa ibang light source (hirap na tagalugin), kung hindi sa sarili niya. Halimbawa, using it in a sentence, “Dude, yung smile niya, kumukuti-kutitap.” Gets? Ah basta. Masayang kasama si Michelle. Try mo.

Ganyan si Michelle.

Maningning.

Makulay.

Kumukutikutitap.

When God invented motherhood, the Almighty did not have Mia in mind. Motherhood, after all, ordinarily comes naturally and virgin births are extremely rare. (We’re merely proceeding from the presumption that things happen according to the ordinary course of nature.) So when her good-looking but lazy-ass blockmates conspired to make her a mother, she was thrust into the role and, short of breastfeeding (with her barkada-size feeders), performed motherly acts, without which, her blockmates would have been like helpless deer staring into headlights. With Mia around, you tried to be good. Not because that is the right thing to do, but because you do not want the fury of hell unleashed upon you. The scorned woman is nothing next to the pissed off block president. She did not exactly make offers you cannot refuse, but if you disappoint her, you better be prepared to be deleted from her mailing list.

Leave me be he says. Pat moves around like a dispassionate brown bullet always on target but hits harder than its zip and zooming versions. He carries around his phlegmatic attitude in whatever situation he finds himself in. Not even the harrowing 10g force vertical drop of anchors-away can make this dude break character and lose cool. Withal he is known to whimper like a little girl versus the dreaded flying ipis. He likes to keep to himself most of the time until you become friends. Then he starts yapping about his latest recit, PSE, and girl conquests. Pat’s level of swagger is matched only by his smarts. He has and will continue to win awards on both. The best thing about Pat: He will bend over backwards for his friends even if it means his own ruin. Is there anyone else in the world as unselfish as Pat? Exactly.

Dr. Daniel Lising - Doc or D to us his classmates –is difficult to miss at Malcolm Hall. He is so big you can spot him from a mile. Add to that his Buddha-like grin like he is about to play a joke on you and his loud laugh like he had just heard the best joke ever.

And what amuses us is his preference for the front-most seat in class; his big frame blocking everyone’s view. He also “saves” the class the dreaded recitation by engaging the professors in serious discussions until the bell rings. He is able to get away with his feigned interest because he gives the right answers whenever his questions are thrown back at him. Whether it’s cunnilingus, Chemistry or contracts, D knows a lot.

Truly, only D’s heart is bigger than him.

And that is why it is difficult not to miss D.

One remedial law review class, the professor joked about a client filing a motion to set aside order of default. The ground – her dog ate the summons. Three seconds later, you probably turned around to look at Kate as she guffawed on her seat, her energetic laughter drowning yours together with that of your 80+ classmates inside the Malcolm Theater. She probably continued snorting involuntarily five minutes after the professor made the joke.

Kate’s sunny disposition and sense of humor drew in her friends, most of whom she has a term of “endearment”. Her family is also her occasional and appreciative audience for her on-the-spot comedy shows. Her Duchenne smile during recitation might have also saved her from getting a “sit down” from several professors, or even earned her a higher grade for the occasionally brilliant ones.

With Kate soon joining the legal profession, you might encounter her in the courtroom with a smile on her face. But do not cross this happy person. She might joke a lot, but she never kids around.

Lui is an addict --- a TV-addict, movie-addict, ex-Friendster addict, and now a Facebook addict. Once she starts doing something for fun (e.g. dvd marathon, videoke, read a pocketbook), she will not sleep until she finishes it (even if it’s just a romance novel).

However, despite her obsessiveness in whatever catches her fancy, and procrastination in the things that really matter like acads, Lui is a responsible daughter who provides for her family.

She’s quiet and shy at first but once you get to know her, you’d be pleasantly surprised to find a kindhearted people person. Loving, caring, and loyal - she feels deeply and empathizes easily – a confidante, who is also trusting and very open to her close friends.

Having worked with her for a newspaper, I have come to respect Ren’s work ethic and admire her ability to light up the room with her great smile — and great hair! On those long nights of putting a newspaper section to bed, she still finds humor in the little disasters that occur between editing and printing. She will even throw a little R&B dance move. Whenever life pushes, Chingkay pushes back.

Greatness is measured not by doing the ordinary. Chingkay has exhibited an exemplary ability not merely to adapt or cope with life’s challenges but to move with a purpose and exude greatness.

Her actions are always guided by faith and is among the rare and exceptional students who gave true meaning to the term “Iskolar ng Bayan” not by con-fining her actions to pursing academic excellence alone but by extending it to matters which require her attention the most. Indeed she lives her life not only as an “Iskolar ng Bayan” but, more importantly, as an “Iskolar PARA SA BAYAN”.

The visible work of fate is the recognition of one’s reason of existence. A rare well-rounded notable person will march past the halls of this esteemed institution ready to play a bigger role, to extend her arms and help make a better society.

Consider further a thick book with svelte design bedecked with vintage golden letter engravings. The title does not say much of what the book contains except that it hints of some grave purpose and profound meaning. Nikki would NOT be that book. Instead she would be a set of handouts, syllabi, technical manuals, readings and tattered bargain books all of which suggest constant use and wide erudition. She is half person and half printed text and pages. Yet somehow Nikki is the exact opposite of a nerd enslaved in purely intellectual and academic pursuits. Fun and exciting do not even begin to describe what happens when she mixes science, music, economic theories, psychology, pop culture and the serious arts in between those moments of curt hellos and the inevitable “see you later, you are awesome Nikki!” good-byes. Just never make the mistake of asking her sing because she just might.

I used to spend most of my days with Caloy: studying (cramming), eating (bingeing), drinking (drinking!). So there are times when one glance, and we’d already know what the other is thinking. I refuse to credit that sense of familiarity though with mere proximity. I think a good part of that praise properly belongs to him, to him and his open, easy-going attitude. Something about Nget makes trusting simple and easy. It could come from the fact that he’s protective and dependable. He makes us feel safe: taking charge, planning resto-hopping trips, driving to beaches. I guess, he’s really just thoughtful like that. And then I’m reminded of the times he could be clueless and (in)sensitive, and he tells me I’ve no one to blame but the patriarchal society we grew up in. =)) If I were you though, I’d take him as he is, for men, good to the bone, are rare gems to keep.—K

Law school might seem insurmountable to many, but Patty stays true to her lineage: la testarossa Italiana. Much like Scipio the Elder over two millenia ago, who survived three battles against Hannibal, Patty never gave up even if it seemed like the odds were against her. She is a woman of paradox – she is interesting not because of her beauty but because of her seeming indifference to it; she is very candid about her faults and yet proud of her virtues; she may sometimes look lost, but believe me, she is the master of her destiny. The spirit of knowing that there is always a solution for so long as one breathes led Scipio to victory over Carthage, and this same spirit animates Patty today, and will continue to guide her until she earns the title “Atty.” for the trials against which she will undoubtedly find herself victorious.

Joy will be a great lawyer not because she graduated from Malcolm Hall but because she is a great person. Friends may tease her by calling her a walking encyclopedia or an editor-at-large but always in recognition of her innate intelligence, frankness and honesty.

Her dedication to PSYSC, her undergraduate org, has earned her the moniker Chemiclub from one of her classmates. She attends mass every Sunday without fail, especially when a certain priest or Jesuit she has taken a particular liking to is officiating. She would be as comfortable talking sports and sports heroes with the men in her block as discussing the latest gossip with women friends. And she keeps groups of friends, some dating back to grade school.

Such is Joy – the most loyal, dedicated friend one can have, a kindred spirit in so many ways and a caring guide to those privileged by her friendship.

In a time when the world is full of sham and drudgery,

We look to those who live their lives with integrity. One such man is Ferdie.

Being a loyal friend, dedicated student and obedient son are some things he is known for.

But there’s no question to him, there is so much more.

With a simple smile and unassuming stance, in a crowd, he may seem easy to miss.

But with an earnest heart and brilliant smile, he is filled with so much promise.

So when you see him, though he may not make your eyes all starry,

Just wait for it. There’s no doubt he’s going to be… Legendary!

His command of the quill is beside the point. He would’ve been the perfect courtier if not for his frustrating sincerity and what comes as vow against slyness. Sit with Carl and you’ll find that his passionate discourse and subtle grin have convinced you that the world’s a page lifted from your favorite book, or just maybe, that having your own talking stuffed-Hobbes is a possibility. His curious commentaries, veiled in wit as they are, reveal a mind that’s enkindled by wild observations, experiences-made-unusual, a zillion books, and decades of reflection that’ll shame the Dalai-Lama. This isn’t saying that there’s a bone of meekness/naivety in this man. Ask him what’s in a Saw’s mind, in a Stinson’s, a Bourne’s, or a you; He’ll give you a dissertation that’ll leave you crazed, as you scream “witch!”. Exceptional as he is though, Carl lives by “I’m not special”. And there’s the irony.

Then she opens her mouth, and you’re floored by her wit, and you realize that there is more to her than meets the eye.

She stands firm in her convictions and outspoken about her beliefs. She is generous in the most inventive ways and always sees the world through optimistic eyes. You see her deep compassion for those in need, human or animal, and you finally understand why being a lawyer appealed to her. And then you’d know that the world would always be defenseless against her charm.

He’s a friend who never judges even if you over-share; who’d give you a free pass to get drunk; and who’d hardly say no to a gimmick night (even if it’s a spur-of-the-moment drive to Tagaytay and you want to take his car). But he’s also a friend who’d announce himself as your knight in shining armor if you get stood up; circle the block if you’re running late; and rush to your aid when you need help. Paul is the epitome of a modern day gentleman. He’ll joke and party without neglecting to show his respect for and protectiveness of you. Many admire Paul because he’s responsible and intelligent – indeed he does quite well in classes – but the prize lies in his heart and his friends know that it’s golden.

The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They simply are the ones who care the most!

I am proud of Mike. Not so much because he achieved so much. That is for his parents to brag about. I am proud of him because he is a great friend. One of my greatest. One of my dearest. For always being there on my high and low days, for the ice cream treats whenever I cry, for staying awake at 4 am listening to my existential questions, for not trying to answer them, for being strong for SJV during BarOps, for hearing my heartaches, for being genuinely happy for the greatest romantic story of my life. For always being there. Always. Thank you. I have loved law school because I shared it with you.

One of the most striking things about Tin is the ease by which she allows people into her life. It doesn’t come as a surprise, then, that people become close to her in a short amount of time. Maybe it’s because she is such a good person that people who meet her are instantly drawn to her. A very friendly person, very seldom would she pass the corridors of Malcolm Hall without waving “Hi!” to somebody, or at least flashing her genuine smile to a familiar face. She is such a joy to be with. Our batch is very lucky to be graced by her wonderful character. Though it is a fact that great minds wander in the halls of UP Law, not all would have noble hearts who have touched the hearts of many. Expect to hear great things for her in the future.

Of course, you may be disjointed about your perceptions of the man, for the truth is, he could sometimes exhibit symptoms of one living a mad-clap existence. But when he does that, it’s only because he has so often found himself on the edge – and survived to tell the tale. He finds irrepressible mirth and boundless hope in the worst and in the most unbearable of situations; after all, he has intimately known personal sacrifice as only a few people could. His friendships are a study in the fine art of spontaneous celebrations; where others may only see the marginality of one’s roots, he founds a generous source of personal pride. And yet, he takes to the exuberance of life with the wonder as could only be known by one who has personally experienced the paradoxical fragility of grace.

Ryan always seems to have a mischievous smile. Sure, he has the enviable ability to manage stress better than most of us, as well as the ability to make people feel at ease, but there is so much more to him than what meets the eye. He is a natural-born leader. He is someone with a vision, someone not content with the way things are.

He is also someone whom I consider a friend for life. Even if I don’t get to see him all that often, when we get together it’s just like old times, as though nothing changed, as though time stood still. We can talk for hours about anything and everything from the mundane to the profound yet never run out of things to say to each other. I know that even if there comes a time when it would be years before we see each other again, but when we actually do meet, he would still be the same smiling Ryan I’ve always known.

A nice guy. You won’t find a bad bone in this person if you even try. His heart is always in the right place. He does not judge until given the reason to do so. He does not hold grudges but will only forgive. He’s the silent type. But when once he does speak, it’ll just be too bad to those who don’t listen. He knows a lot but doesn’t boast. He is aware enough to know that one doesn’t have the answers to everything. He second guesses himself, but this only means that when he’s sure, you can bet that what he’s saying is right.

Donned in all the accoutrements of a man of the world and striding with a walk of slight haughtiness, Eric would strike you at first blush as aloof and somewhat condescending. But that impression is sure to end once he lets his guard down. When that happens, Eric beams with such cheerful playfulness stifled by a tad of coyness that is reminiscent of a kid’s charm. However, lest you might underestimate his capabilities, Eric is someone who gets the job done. He applies himself to all the objects of his passion with unwavering zeal and dogged persistence. From his others-oriented pursuits under the auspices of Gawad Kalinga, his contributions to the Aquino Foundation, his successful orchestration of two U.P. People are often surprised to hear that his real name is Efrain — a far cry from Jecky, his nickname. This disparity might also account for why first impressions of Jecky tend to deviate from his true personality. Although some people write him off as flirty, mayabang or snobby given his perfect hair and boyish charm, he’s actually a self-confident, reasonable, and malambing person who takes the study of law very seriously and has his priorities straight. Just spend a bit over 5 minutes with Jecky and mid-laugh you’ll realize that he is a genuinely good guy, who values people more than anything else. Beneath that really hairy exterior and deceptively aloof demeanor lies an intelligent, warm, huggable movie buff and music lover with a quirky sense of humor.

“Charisse” may be synonymous to grace, but Cha means just the same as “light”. You can tell just by looking at Cha that she’s light. At around 90 lbs, it’s quite understandable. She’s either mistaken for an undergrad or a high school student. People do double-takes when seeing her for the first time. She’s that easy, dare I say light, on the eyes. You can feel that she’s light. Many a dark cloud hovering over classes were dissipated by her disarming “Siiiiir?” whenever addressed by the professor, or by her now-legendary quotations brought by misheard “radyos” and quick wit. You will know that she’s light. She always finds ways to help her friends in any and every aspect of their lives. From your darkest hours to your mundane matters, she will alleviate your mood, ease your stress, and carry your burden with you wholeheartedly. She’s never a handful. Cha loves people. And that’s why everyone loves Cha. Cha is the kind of person that you will know is there if she is; and you will obviously feel missing when she’s not - just like a room at night when you switch off the light.

Carla is the epitome of a fun, fab, fearless female! She is risk and adventure, balanced with perfectly good sense and perception. I can still vividly remember our first time on the famed island paradise of Boracay. We decided to take the not-so-usual route of getting there. The trip was to be a challenge as we would stay on the island for the weekend, on just Php 5,000—for everything.

If you think that wasn’t do-able, our trip got just a li’l bit more exciting when a typhoon decided to visit Bora at about the same time we went. Stranded on an island with nowhere to go? Carla’s been there, done that. And she survived, still looking fab!

Our Bora mis-adventure definitely showcased Carla’s strong hope and faith (yes, we would make it safe), her strength as a person and of course, her being smart and resourceful. That’s Carla, you get her 3-dimensional, never a flat surface. And with her, there is never a dull moment.

Pieces of advice for my 12 year-old self:

• Take afternoon naps, go to bed early and wake up late. There will come a time when sleep shall be treated as rare commodity.

• When Michael Jackson holds a concert, watch. He won’t be back.

• Remember: Google stocks.

• In college, one Psychology professor will diagnose you as neurotic. Laugh.

• Think of the ocean whenever you would experience a heartbreak.

• Dancing will do wonders for your aura. At any age.

• Whenever you would feel like a dork, remember: you’re a lot cooler than you think.

• Contribute to making the world a better place by learning the art of patience.

• The best time to enter law school will be in 2007. Henceforth, prepare for a rollercoaster ride.

• Be prepared to meet people who will challenge your beliefs. Welcome them with resilience and enthusiasm.

Phoebs is definitely an all-around babe. Hardworking student, volleyball star, and dependable sis, anyone would be proud to have her as a friend. During the day, you’ll find her all suited-up walking poised in 4-inch high heels. Once out of class, she’ll let her hair loose, and can be found jogging around the oval in cross-trainers.

Pheebs is one perceptive, level-headed friend. She has this strong intuition which makes her sensitive to the feelings of others. Such intuition is also tempered by her rationality which, as is the usual case, helps her arrive at sound decisions. These traits make her a company worth to keep.

There’s no denying that law school can be a pretty brutal world. Fortunately, it’s also the best place to find the greatest of friends, and Cris tops that list. Truth is, she’s a walking heart because she always finds the good in everyone. And despite her seemingly strong personality, she’s actually a marshmallow. She’s the first to miss everyone and also the first to get everyone together.

Cris will hold your hand tight when you’re trembling in fear. She’ll stand up and fight your battles when you’re too weak to speak. She’ll patiently explain to you the cases and doctrines when you’re feeling lost and behind. She’ll even “partay” with you whether it’s a drive to Dencio’s Tagaytay for drinks, or a walk to Sinangag Express Taft for crazy early breakfast! She’s really God sent and my only wish is that everyone will have a Cris Real in their lives.

From our occasional chats about work and the future – what I call moments of “productive indolence”[1] – to the battles she wages for the clients of the legal aid office, I believe I have gotten bits and pieces of Che, enough for me to form a complete picture. Here is what I can report: Che would stand up for her principles. She would not be tied down by useless conventions. She would not bring people down but push them to overcome their fears, take that first step, and try new things. And that she would be an excellent lawyer, no question about it.

In one of our conversations, Jenny’s reply left me in awe. She said “It’s just money. What use is it if it doesn’t make you happy?” Now here’s a lady who knows a lot about life! A certified public accountant no less, she never ceases to amaze me. Ask her about Civil Law and she can adequately answer your queries while playing Restaurant City or watching America’s Next Top Model. She gets most excited when new items in Pet Society are out or when she wins a free artwork from a professional artist! She’s usually behind her laptop but never fails to find time for her friends – listening, giving advice, cheering them up with witty remarks and the never-fail-dilly-bar! The lone LaSallite in a block full of Ateneans, it seems she ended up right where she should be for she soon found friends she wants to keep for life. We’re lucky to have Jenny as a friend because we know that she’ll be a true one forever and ever.

As classmates we have high expectations for Chris after graduation. Although, it may not be apparent now, especially with his favorite subject (Succession), we will put the burden on him just the same. Those who doesn’t know him may be surprised how much he is able to accomplish given his responsibilities: family, wife and daughter, work, his students, etc. Not to mention law school, let’s just say it’s both his reality and alternate reality at this moment. So, where will we find Chris 10 or 25 years from now? Will he be the advocate (of what in particular I am still to be informed)? Will he be the public servant (We have trust in you)? Will he be an SC Justice (We know deep inside you want this one!)? Whatever it’ll be, he’ll surely be among the good alumni of UP law. Don’t me down (said the walrus Paul)!

Mims Sabitsana is the person anyone would want to hang (“sabit”) out with in law school. In class, she’s one of those who would allow others to photocopy her notes or attempt to “tv” or “radyo” the person on deck for recitation. She would go out of her way to accompany a blockmate to dinner, watch a play, or just listen to the daily rants usually resounding in the halls of Malcolm. She is one of the friendly faces that is familiar to the different batches in the College, not only for being a member of the PLJ or representing the school in basketball games, but also because of her approachable deportment that is not that common in law school. Mims is often teased for having one of the smallest and high-pitched voices in the batch. It is this same voice, however, that articulates legal arguments and encourages people to move on and remain strong. It is also the same voice that impels people to listen to reason and act based on compassion.

Hard work is a prison sentence only if it does not have meaning. Once it does, it becomes the kind of thing that makes you grab your wife around the waist and dance a jig. -- Malcolm Gladwell Outliers, 2008

Malcolm Hall, for an evening working student, was hard work. But as another Malcolm so aptly wrote, it was meaningful hard work.

The work was, in retrospect, lighter, because of a law school block that was my rampart of support, a patient and encouraging beloved who never ceased to inspire, and my family, my snuggling comfort that constantly reminded me of who I am and what I’m made of at the end of a taxing day-- to be renewed and refreshed once more.

Simoun is blessed with the gift of speech that stirs people to think clearly and act with resolve. As a student he explains with clarity to his professors the intricacies of the Rules of Court. As an advocate/intern he convinces judges to grant causes for his clients; as a friend he deciphers the esoteric idioms of Fall Out Boy and John Mayer. He uses this gift with his discipline in school and his passion for service. He communicates effectively to people in need of counsel and encouragement - both great qualities of leaders. His leadership translates to results, because he is truly a man for others. A leader, a brother, a good son, a friend. When Simoun speaks, people listen, and value his words. Indeed, Simoun says good words. But a lot more can be said about Simoun: words of gratitude which can only be spoken from our hearts.

My childhood dream was to be an astronaut. I’d love to ride the space-shuttle, soar into outerspace and explore the rest of the universe. Then, I ended up in law school. Surprisingly, in some ways I have fulfilled my fantasy.

Every recitation day was like riding a spacecraft: you’ll always wonder whether you could get out alive. Often, I feel like I’m floating due to sleep deprivation; thanks to studying straight on ‘til morning. Then, questions thrown were like blazing meteors falling from heaven to earth.

And yes, I saw stars! Much more, they were talking - and they taught me law. But their exams – always give a feeling of heaven colliding on earth.

Now, I may not have worn a spacesuit, but I feel more than fulfilled. It is because in learning law I realized, we can bring heaven right here on earth.. But, only if we choose to.

Diane, or Diane Sing as her blockmates fondly call her, is far from a stereotypical law student. A consistent recipient of recognitions, her quiet and soft-spoken demeanor makes her a role model by example. Diane, however, also knows how to have fun, and many may be surprised by just how kikay she is. As an avid shopper, she always impresses with her own sense of style. To relax herself, a weekly dose of tsismis, dinner dates, and a nice movie are simple yet effective getaways. Diligent and disciplined, this accountant and soon-to-be lawyer, who seldom looks stressed out, makes it appear that her achievements were attained effortlessly. Diane simply keeps her priorities straight, and she rarely opts for self-gratification when this would compromise her work or studies. A good student and a better friend, Diane is surely lined up to be a well-respected legal practitioner in the years to come.

Katsy is the kind of person who anyone would likely approach for her gentle and composed demeanor. In a jungle like Malcolm Hall with the usual panicked looks and hurried walks, Katsy stands out by her mere calmness. Amidst the flying pages of the SCRA and the screeching of highlighters on paper, Katsy is one who would be meticulously studying, minus the anxiety attack. With such focus and discipline, it’s no surprise then that Katsy has remained to be a member of the Order of the Purple Feather.

This is not all there is to her, however. Teased by her blockmates as the “Queen B,” Katsy can be feisty when necessary. She’s fondly quoted as having said, “I’m sorry --- but I’m not sorry” to a blockmate during a drinking session. Despite the block banter, Katsy is undeniably one of the most generous and thoughtful people in the block. She is definitely a friend for keeps even beyond the halls of law school.

Kaye stands out as one of the more unique people you’ll meet in law school. After all, it’s not every day you get to meet someone who discussed “dance” before a panel of law professors to get into UP Law. You won’t find someone enthusiastically advertise an Office Warehouse pen or a Monami highlighter as much as she does. Eventually, you’d see her “OC kit” full of these items plus tabs and bookmarks that are so many, you’d think she can’t use them all; but she can. The 5 words her friends attribute to her are what she, as well, identify with. PINK: because there’s no hate in such color, just love. OC: because, with her, obsessive-compulsive never looked this hot. SNOB: because she doesn’t smile for the sake of it. GREAT FRIEND, because she’ll stick with you no matter what. DANCE, because it will be a part of her.

A fairytale princess dressed as a lawyer, a sheep draped in a wolf’s coat of fur - these are subtle, conflicting images that come to mind when envisioning Alexandria. Having worked and grown up in the family gun business, one would think that she’d end up as a day-dreaming Le Femme Nikita. Instead, her interests are varied: she finds herself thinking about The Great American Songbook and YouTube while idly browsing the Civil Code. She dreams of one day combining all three - culture, video and the law - in one happy mix. This is not to disregard however her strong passion for Philippine history, her exquisite taste in delectable dishes, and her knack for languages. Contemplative of the future, she thinks of the day when these interests can collide with life after school - a day when she’ll be a lawyer who feels like a princess, a wolf in pretty sheep’s clothing.

Talk about Vanessa, law is probably the last idea that comes to mind. For she’s a first rate number cruncher who can mentally solve complex equations. It is little wonder that, six years ago, she topped the Geodetic Engineering Licensure Examination.

She, too, is not the businesslike and confrontational kind. She has a soft, tender voice. She prefers jeans over suit, backpack or carryall over handbag, e-books over fashion magazines.

But it is precisely her mathematical wizardry and unaffected grace that give her an edge in law school. She has this earthy common sense that allows her to apply a legal theory to a given problem with a sensible and practical approach.

Extremely astute, Est never takes things as they seem to be. In class, she would not just recite just what the law is. Rather, she would recite what the law ought to be. Professional and responsible, Est never discriminates between the things she loves and hates doing. Either way, she would display the same zeal and give the same “her all.” Yet despite all the torture – physical, emotional, and mental – that learning the law in the grand manner entails, somehow, she enjoys the finer things in life – the dine and wine, the travels, and the culture. Women are individually different at Malcolm. But Est is radically different. Just like her nickname “Est” she does things in the superlative.

Mars is the personification of a simple man with not-so-simple dreams. Despite appearances to the contrary, he considers himself a simple probinsyano who enjoys the laid-back ambiance and the casual way of living, characteristic of small cities where everybody knows each other. Notwithstanding this self-made vision of lassitude, he is passionate, ambitious, with a strong work ethic. The combination of simplicity and determination make a rather interesting recipe when other oddities – such as his strange affinity for fictional anti-heroes, historical novellas, and high-tech gadgetry – are taken into consideration. A geek by training, a writer by choice, and a student of the law for life, Mars dreams of writing the next great Filipino novel and of eventually contributing to legal lore. For now though he’ll continue to dream and write in the hopes that he is read and appreciated, despite the simplicity of his words and the grandness of his thoughts.

Scientists have proffered theories about the confluence of beauty and brains, but as yet no one has ventured a theory about the confluence of the three: beauty, brains. Well there may be no need for such theory; already, these words find their sum in a single person: Angeli Vigo.

After years of cutting through the legal thicket of codals, books and cases Angeli has emerged unscathed, and this she did in style. A picture of elegance and grace, Angeli stands out from a sea of sullen faces: there is a certain air of nonchalance about her that is rare in pressure-hounding law school. And while she can be described by many words ranging from quick-witted to statuesque, mediocre is never one of them. Striking a balance between the sorority, her studies, and even her leisure is never a chore for someone so natural in handling her time well. Indeed Angeli is well-armed for any future endeavor, which she always treads in style.

Some girls see her and almost intuitively, they want to hate her. Maybe because, she enters a room and at once, all eyes are on Kring. A presence like no other, her strides are certain. Her face is gorgeous. Add those clean, creamy shoulders, then tell me, how can anyone be not threatened?

Alas, these girls spend a bit of time with Kring. And they get disappointed the way I was. Why? Because being around her makes you realize that God plays favorites. For how can someone as sublime, be just as funny, patient and kind? How can one be so strong, be so sweet at the same time? Kring’s exuberance transforms to calm at the right count. Her confidence can be unnerving, but wait for her trust so she can show you her doubts, her fears and her qualms. Smart, brave, witty and loyal to a fault, hating her is damn futile. For Kring is nothing short of loving, down-to-earth and giving. And though most would say she’s eye-catching, I’d say our girl is absolutely captivating.
