Unfortunately, there is no defined curriculum of continuing education that allows the maintenance and
reliability (M &R) professional to improve their skills and knowledge. However, there are edu-cational opportunities available for the main-tenance and reliability professional to improve their skills and knowledge. These educational opportunities fall into several groupings. They are:
• Conferences• Training Courses• Textbooks• E-learningLet’s examine each of these in further detail.
ConferencesConferences for the maintenance and
reliability professionals can be great opportu-nities for education. But to be successful at this
educational experience, the attendee needs to be an active, not a passive participant. Being actively involved in a conference means tak-ing advantage of the opportunities to interact with your peers and workshop/ conference presenters, and attending networking ses-sions. Before M & R professionals attend a con-ference, they should review the conference
agenda for topics that are relevant to their cur-rent issues in their plant/ facility or are of a pro-fessional interest to them. They should choose sessions in these areas and always select a backup session they may wish to attend (just in case their first choice is filled or the subject matter is not what they thought it would be). This way, any confusion is eliminated when they arrive at the event.
M & R professionals should also keep in mind that there are several different profiles of presenters and workshop leaders. They in-clude other M & R professionals who have had success in a particular aspect of their career and are sharing their knowledge with attend-ees, or vendors who demonstrate how their product or service has solved existing prob-lems in a plant/facility. Vendor presentations may feature one or more M & R professionals who discuss the benefits they derived from using the vendor’s product/service. Another type of presenter is the industry thought lead-er. These presentations typically take an aca-demic approach, as the presenter addresses topics/problems facing the M & R professional. This type of presentation may also highlight new trends that are developing in the main-tenance and reliability industry. Each of these three types of presentations has value for the M & R professional and good conference plan-ning leads one to choose a mix of presenta-tions to balance their learning experience.
Each conference also provides numer-ous networking experiences. This allows for learning in a relaxed setting. Based on the M & R professional’s needs, it is a good time to find the presenter or workshop leader and ask any follow-up questions or discuss any ideas that may not have been discussed during the
Educational Opportunities
for the Maintenance Reliability Professional
Terry WiremanThere are times in an individual’s
career when it is felt they have reached the pinnacle and there is no
pressure to personally improve. How-ever, in rapidly changing professions,
such as maintenance and reliability, that pinnacle is never reached.
There are a considerable number of opportunities for the
Maintenance Reliability professional to learn from the
experience of others. Are you going to take advantage of one or more of
the opportunities in the near future?
5 Call 1-888-575-1245 or go online: www.maintenanceconference.com
session. In this relaxed, informal session, the M & R professional can often learn more details than could be gained in the formal presenta-tion. One should never attend a conference without planning to attend the networking sessions.
Training CoursesWhether in conjunction with a conference
or in a stand-alone session, there are many training courses that are offered. These training sessions may range in length from four hours to three days. Training courses are typi-cally focused on a defined topic, with a set agenda, and are typically published with a notification of the time and location of the course. This type of learn-ing experience is more relaxed with a manage-able group size of the M & R professional’s peers. In this type of session, the subject matter expert leading the train-ing course is highly knowledgeable with good presentation skills. Time is al-lowed for interactive sessions, question and answer sessions, and interactive discussions with the subject matter expert. These intense-ly-focused training courses provide in-depth information for virtually any aspect of main-tenance and reliability required by the M & R professional.
TextbooksThere are many good textbooks available
for the M & R professional to reference on virtually any topic they desire. Many of the textbooks are used as course material for the previously discussed conference sessions and training courses. By attending these sessions, the M & R professional can interact directly with the author and gain additional insight into the information in the textbook. In addi-tion, the majority of the textbooks contain the author’s e-mail or other contact information. This provides the M & R professional with an-other way to interact with the author. When a M & R professional finds a textbook that covers
material applicable to their organization, they can recommend the textbook to fellow man-agers or workers to help them gain insight into the topic. This approach to education can as-sist immensely with the change management in any organization.
E-LearningE-learning opportunities available to a M &
R professional vary considerably. First, there is the Webinar opportunity. There
are high quality webinars available almost every
week and usually run 60 to 90 minutes
in duration. With the wide variety of topics being offered, a M & R professional could assemble
their team mem-
bers for a weekly, bi-weekly, or even monthly training session. There are some Webinars that are recorded and can be replayed at any time convenient to the team.
In addition to the Webinar format, there are recorded video workshops. These DVD-format training sessions are typically a workshop based on a textbook. They enable the M & R
professional to attend a workshop at their own convenience. The DVD workshops are divided into units so they can be viewed in time allo-cations convenient for the M & R professional.
DVD workshops also can be used by M & R professionals in their team training sessions. The team could meet together to view a sec-tion of the DVD workshop and then discuss it. Some workshops are accompanied by a “questions for discussion” workbook to further stimulate discussion.
Douglas Adams, author of “Last Chance to See,” writes, “Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.” There are a considerable number of opportunities for the M & R professional to learn from the ex-perience of others. Are you going to take ad-vantage of one or more of the opportunities in the near future?
Why attend?

2012 RPI Conferences, Fort Myers, FL
Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) Summit and Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS)According to research, only 20% of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) or enterprise Asset Manage-ment (eAM) implementation produces the results desired by organizations using CMMS/eAM. This focused-learning event is designed for those seeking to reimplement an existing CMMS/eAM for more effective maintenance manage-ment and decision support or for those who plan to implement a new CMMS/eAM.
Asset Management ForumIn anticipation of ISo-55000 Asset Management Standard, many organizations have used the PAS 55 specification to develop an asset management framework and policy.
The new ISo-55000 Asset Management Standard, to be released in 2013, will provide a clear and concise definition of what needs to be done to tune physical assets for business objectives at any point in their lifecycle. ISo-55000 Asset Management Standard covers every organization—whether private or public—in any sector. It is already in use within public services and property, utilities, transport, manufacturing, mining, oil and gas, defense, pharmaceutical, and process and heavy engineering. Reliabilityweb.com® has assembled the world’s leading experts and practitioners to provide you with a four-day educational session designed to enlighten you on ISo-55000 Asset Management Standard, explain the opportuni-ties and challenges, discover different ISo-55000 Asset Management Standard road maps and explore certification options and business advantages.

Asset Operations Excellence Master Class and the Manufacturing Game®Day 1-2 by John Mitchell, Author, Physical Asset Management Handbook Day 3 by Winston Ledet, Author, Don’t Just Fix It, Improve It!
April 24-26, 2012 or November 13-15, 2012A large and growing number of top-performing companies are implementing operational excellence initiatives to drive broad improve-
ments in safety, regulatory compliance, operating effectiveness and business results across the entire organization. operational excellence is not a “program of the month” but rather an essential long-term, overall concept for manufacturers to gain and sustain the competitive performance that is mandatory for continuing success in today’s global markets. But what is operational excellence? How does it apply to maintenance reliability activities and professionals? And how does it fit with existing programs and specifica-tions, such as PAS 55 and the ISo/NP 55000 Asset Management Standard? The first two days of this workshop answer all these questions and many more. It defines operational excellence, narrows the concept to focus on its application to physical assets and demonstrates how maintenance reliability principles and professionals provide essential business value within operational excellence. The workshop details the components and implementation of a comprehensive operational excellence program for physical assets.
on the third day of this event, learn how you can get your organization to be more proactive and deliver sustainable business performance. The Manufacturing Game® workshop is a catalyst that cultivates organizational characteristics promoting proactive growth and bottom-line results. In this hands-on, interactive experience, participants learn the importance of cross-communication between departments. They strategize with other participants and deal with solving everyday problems. They make improvements in reliability and throughput while still meeting customer demands in a safe and environmentally sound world.
Maintenance Strategy Master Class Level 1 by Terry Wireman, Author, The Maintenance Strategy ™ Series January 25-27, 2012 or October 3-5, 2012Today, “Best Practice,” competitive companies recognize the importance of maximizing their return on investment in their assets. Finan-
cial institutions routinely evaluate companies based on the RoFA (Return on Fixed Assets) or RoNA (Return on Net Assets) indicators. This highlights the importance companies must place on achieving competitive and cost-effective maintenance reliability and asset manage-
ment initiatives. This three-day training course is designed to provide participants with the framework to collect information and the tools to develop performance measures necessary to gain the business intelligence needed to improve performance of physical assets and employees.

Focused Change Management for Reliability Initiatives and the Reliability Game®Day 1-2 by Steve Thomas, Author, The Journey to Improved Business Performance Day 3 by Bruce Hawkins, Management Resources Group, Inc.
May 1-3, 2012 or October 9-11, 2012Implementing technically valid reliability improvement methods often fail to achieve the results envisioned at the onset of the project.
In this training course, you will learn how to successfully implement and sustain the change resulting from the reliability improvement initiative.
The first two days of the course provide you with a deeper understanding of what is involved and required to successfully implement and sustain change. It includes:
• The basic concepts and misconceptions about change management.
• Understanding the difference between non-linear (change-focused) thinking and project-focused linear thinking.
• The Change Pyramid. Task-based change is only the first level. There are two additional levels that must be addressed: the strategic aspects (the eight elements of change) and organizational culture.
• The Web of Change – a tool used to measure change in the form of a radar or web diagram showing the interrelationships between the elements of change.
• The Goal Achievement Model – a tool that helps develop goals into measureable activities.
• Understanding that simply completing goals is not sufficient. outcomes and impacts of what you are doing need careful consideration. Negative impacts must be reconciled.
• Change Root Cause Failure Analysis or how to figure out how to improve once the areas of opportunity are identified.
• Measurement of success through the use of audits and reapplication of the Web of Change survey.
Day 3 of this course is The Reliability Game®, which lowers resistance to change by letting people experience the transition to a new, proactive environment. Players learn to “follow the money” to proactive behavior and cooperation.

Thomas Written in a very engaging manner, this book teaches the essential concepts associated with change management in a highly unique manner.
