gRand Knight’s mEssagEAnother fraternal year has concluded and a new year starts with the installation of of-

ficers on Saturday, July 4th, 2009, following the 11:00 AM mass in the Main Hall. Other activities occurring this month include the Nationals versus the Chicago Cubs baseball game on Saturday, July 18, and the Fish Club’s Crab Feast, on Friday, July 31, 2009.

I want to thank Leo Maimone and all of the other Council officers for the tremendous wonderful job they did this past year. Some of the E.D.W. accomplishments include: Thanksgiving Day when over 1,500 meals were prepared; the thousands of dollars raised for KOVAR, VKCCI, and the Arlington Food Assistance Center; and the numerous activi-ties that we held for our members. I trust that our newly elected officers will continue the tradition of always striving improve E.D.W.

After reviewing the list of items I hoped to accomplish during the past year, I see some accomplishments and some goals for the upcoming year. During this past year we were able to recognize many of our members with their twenty five year member-ship pins. While we will continue to recognize our members with their twenty five year membership pins, we will begin again to present our deserving members with their fifty year membership pins. (Yes, this project has taken me a longer then I had anticipated.) Also, during this upcoming year, I want our 500 Club to once again become thriving activity for the Council.

Oscar Garcia was the honoree, when SOC Enterprises, located at 750 South 23rd Street in Arlington received a KOVAR grant help pay for the roof repairs. E.D.W. raised more then $175 for KOVAR during June’s BBQ battle, where there was a very close race for first place, with John and Jacob Willson edging out the competition. In addition to the judges tasting the entrees, many others were able to sample the delicious BBQ.

There are many, many different opportunities for us to get involved with at E.D.W. The Red Coats, our waiters at E.D.W., are always looking for a few good men to join one of the teams. The blood drives at E.D.W. need greater participation by those who can donate blood. Please consider these activities and the many other activities listed in the Knight Life and on our web site.

Please have a great, safe summer.

Congratulations To the slate of officers elected to serve the EDW membership

during the fraternal year running July 1, 2009, through June 30, 2010. Further, I would like to congratulate Past Grand Knights Vince Long and Art Gamotis, who will serve as State Officers (Vince as District Deputy, Art as District Warden) during this Fraternal Year. This reflects very well on EDW, as this is the first time in many years that EDW has been asked to serve in one of these positions, let alone two! I am looking forward to working with you over the next year!

EDW, We Have a Budget Attached to this month’s Knight Life you will find a proposed

budget that the other officers and I put together for the upcoming fraternal year. Though it contains the “standard stuff,” please take a moment to review it, as the budget will be brought to a vote during the second meeting of July.

Dues Notices The Third Quarter dues notices were mailed around July 1.

Hopefully, you have seen them if you have an outstanding bal-ance. Sometimes, presorted mail takes a bit longer than First Class mail, so if you don’t receive your notice by the end of the month, please telephone me and leave a message so that we can keep you current. I am now keeping a list of all members and their dues payment status with me, so I should be able to answer your questions very quickly.

New Members/Recruitment I’d like to remind everyone that, as the Financial Secretary,

I am ultimately responsible to ensure eligibility in the Knights of Columbus and have worked with our Membership Chairmen, A.J. Valinote and Chris Bannon, over the past year to make sure that prospective members are of the Roman Catholic faith before they can take the First Degree. New members must somehow demonstrate that they are Catholic before they can join. This has been a requirement since the Venerate Father McGivney created the Knights of Columbus and is easily accomplished in one of several ways: 1) by bringing their family’s weekly parish contri-bution envelope; 2) by bringing a Baptismal/Holy Communion/Confirmation Certificate; 3) by way of a letter from a Catholic Priest; or by 4) legacy (a family member sponsor). Please make sure that anyone you recruit is able to comply with one of the above because they will be asked.

K of c golf oUting at WilliamsBURg

By paul KempThere were thirty-six Knights of Columbus golfers and friends

at our first ever outing at Williamsburg, Virginia on May 17 through 21, 2009. The first day at Kiskiack was washed out with a steady, cold rain almost all day. On the second day, May 18, we played the Captain’s Choice competition on the Golden Horseshoe’s Gold course. There was a three-way tie for first place at two over par between the teams of Fortkort, Joe Carmichael, Wolfe, and Kemp; the team of Haithcock, Higdon, Copsey and Healy; and the team of Tom Carmichael, Wilson, August and Pizzano.

On May 19 we played the Golden Horseshoe’s Green course, which for me and many others turned disastrous. Although ad-mittedly the course was a bit wet, the management unnecessarily decreed cart path only. This course consists of long, winding

The K of C Bridge Club has a weekly duplicate bridge game in the Main Hall (usually) of the Main Activities Building at 7:00 p.m. sharp on Monday evenings. We have two sections: the Open Game and a NLM Game, the latter limited to players with less than 500 master points, who are not Life Masters. All members and guests are welcome.

There will be no game on July 27th, because of the National Bridge Tournament in Washington, DC. There are events for all skill levels at the Nationals and bridge lessons and other activities for Intermediate and Novice players. See you all at the Nationals which runs from July 23rd through August 2nd.

Congratulations to all of last month’s winners (we did not have games on either May 18 or May 25):

a gUaRantEEd invEstmEntToday, I was wondering why our annuity business is doing

so well – up 70 percent over last year. Not that I am unhappy or troubled by business being good. But I what pondered is this: why now and not all the time? What is it about market downturns that cause people to suddenly think that they need a position that includes a stable guaranteed product like a K of C retirement an-nuity? Doesn’t the market always turn down sooner or later? So why not establish a guaranteed alternative to balance those swings?

As I pondered, I enlisted the help of my friend and co-worker Tony Minopoli, our chief investment officer, to consider to fol-lowing scenario:

Two 55-year-old men in the United States on Jan. 1 1999, have $50,000, and are looking for a place to put it for 10 years. One decides to invest it in the S & P 500 Index and leave it there, paying taxes on dividends as they are paid and spending more than a little time worrying about what will happen to investment. The other puts his money in a tax-deferred retirement annuity with the Knights of Columbus, with all the guarantees that come with it. He leaves it here for 19 years and spends exactly no time worrying about it.

Ten years later, both men are now 65 years old and consider-ing retirement. On Dec. 31, 2008, they check on the $50,000. (Notice that to be fair I am using a date before the most recent market madness.)

Our S & P 500 fellow, Tony tells me, would have an account value of $43,494.17, an annual compounded return of -1.38% per year – and he paid taxes along the way on those dividends. Our K of C tax-deferred annuity fellow would find that a balance that has swelled to $78,152.41, for an annual return of 4.75% - and the power of deferring taxes has not been factored in.

I have nothing against money in the market. But I do wonder why more of our members and their families don’t take advantage of our guaranteed annuity product. You get a great return, deferred taxes and retirement planning – and you get to sleep at night. Not a bad deal.

So, regardless of where you think the market is headed right now, why no build yourself something guaranteed? Call your agent. Establishing an annuity is a simple, quick, and easy process. Then relax and rest easy. We’ll do the rest.

fairways between high hills. When driving down the cart paths to find your ball, you had to climb the hills just to see the fairway. The end result of all this was that many senior players, which generally describes the Knights today, were too tired to complete the course. Despite the adversity some hardy souls soldiered on, the scores of which follow:

Flight A - Gross - Bob Haithcock 81 Net - Warren Kaufman 73Flight B - Gross - Jim Graham 94 Net - Brian Cooper 73Flight C - Gross - Linwood Cox 96 Net - Gene Mattingly 77Flight D - Gross - Robert Howe 111 Net - O’Hara and Creamer (tie) 81

Three golfers tied for the blind bogey, Gilbertson, Gallucio and Ray O’Brien, and Ray O’Brien was closest to the pin.

On May 29 we played Williamsburg National at Yorktown, the scores of which follow:

Flight A - Gross - Bob Haithcock 81 Net - Dick Ryan 68Flight B - Gross - Gene Meale 88 Net - Tony Gallucio 68Flight C - Gross - Bill Wolfe 94 Net - Linwood Cox 71Flight D - Gross - Bob Pizzano 94 Net - Jim Healy 70

Two golfers received prizes for closest to the pin: Roger Furey and Paul Kemp.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who helped to make the Jim Savarese Memorial Golf Tournament such a success. The generous support of our corporate sponsors greatly helped us defray costs. A special thanks to Larry and Nancy Scully of Scully Capital Securities for not only sponsoring the luncheon but for signing up two teams! Thanks to Meredith for all the work on the signs; to Norm Marcocci for helping at the front desk; and to my husband James and Al Camacho for coming out early to set up the signage at the golf holes. The weather was great and I’ve heard many positive comments from participants.

Please keep in mind our sponsors when you are looking for services.

Here are a few other reminders for your consideration. Sign up for the Nationals… The game is July 18th and you have until July 1st to purchase tickets.

Ladies U-Knighted will again be selling baked goods and 50/50 tickets during the 4th of July picnic, so stop by our booth for some sweets and a chance to win some “dough.”

Last but not least, please welcome to our new member Vivian Mann.

I would like to say thank you to all the members who have stepped up and helped make the campus look as good as it does for the summer season. The new tennis court looks great and is being used by members daily.

There are a couple of issues I feel I need to bring up to keep the grounds looking good and things running smoothly. The first is the long standing club policy prohibiting dogs on the grounds. There are members of the Club and members of the pool who walk their dogs around the Campus. I have spoken to several new members of the swim team who were not aware of the policy. This must stop and any help from the members in this area would be appreciated.

The second issue is one that I thought was perfectly clear and has become a real problem so far this season.

1. No glass bottles or aluminum cans are allowed on the grounds. They can be unsafe for all those walking barefoot outside the pool area if the glass breaks or the cans have a sharp edge.

2. The second part of this policy, which maybe some members may not aware of, is that due to our ABC License, ALL BEER & WINE must be purchased through the Club. This is for all parties we book at the Club and for anyone using the Club Facilities. When you bring your own beer or wine in, and ABC inspectors, who are allowed to come visit the Club at any time, see people are drinking beer or wine they have brought with them, you put our ABC License in jeopardy of being revoked. That would mean NO beer or wine could be served anywhere at the Club. The prices here are reasonable for beer and wine and frankly the Club needs the revenue to keep your dues at the low levels they currently are. From now on anyone bringing beer or wine onto the grounds will be asked to remove it to their vehicle. If this behavior persists, members or guests will be asked to leave. It is clearly stated in the rules posted at the pool desk and on signs around the Campus.

Thanks in advance for your understanding and consideration in these matters and most of all have a safe and fun summer.
