In one short section he talks about learning to speak Starbucks. If you know anything about Starbucks, you know that it is not possible to get a cup of coffee. My usual order is a large-decaf-skim-sugar free-vanilla-latte - or a venti decaf skinny vanilla latte in Starbucks lingo. Churches have their own lingo too. Some of it might be denominational. The vast majority of Disciple youth groups are named CYF - short for Christian Youth Fellowship. Some lingo is local, like CCLC - Chenault Christian Life Center. TRANSCRIPT

My wonderful wife, Jennifer, surprised me at work a few minutes ago with a cup of Starbucks coffee. It was a beautifully thoughtful gesture. I didn’t expect it, but that she would do so, doesn’t sur-prise me. There was a time when we went to Starbucks multiple times every week. Now that only hap-pens when we are on vacation. Most weeks we forego the pleasure of an expensive cup of coffee.

When I was a graduate student, studying at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey, Leonard Sweet was one of the professors at the seminary. I never took one of his classes, in part because as seminary classes they didn’t count towards my graduate degree. Dr. Sweet has written numerous book designed to help ministers and churches reach Millennial and GenXers. One of his books is titled, “The Gospel According to Starbucks: Living with a Grande Passion.” It is a pretty good read, if you are a Star-bucks aficionado.

In one short section he talks about learning to speak Starbucks. If you know anything about Starbucks, you know that it is not possible to get a cup of coffee. You can get a tall, grande, or venti, or any one of about fifty-six thousand possibilities, but a simple cup of coffee is not one of them. In order to order, you must know the lingo.

Some lingo is theological, like righteousness or atonement. Some lingo is practical, like participating member or regular attender. But all the lingo is nonsensical if you don’t speak the language.

Rev. Meredith has created a wonderful list of First Christian Church lingo. It is part of an infor-mational package given to new members. Now, does it include every bit of our unique jargon? No, but hits most of the high spots.

Below are a few of the acronyms an other lingo which sounds like pig-latin to folk who don’t speak FCCFK - First Christian Church Frankfort Kentucky. I wonder, how well do you speak our lan-guage? Serving Others:

Our Chi Rho team worked their

last session of the Backpacking

Ministry for this school year.

A special thank you to Eva Ellis for donating a new children’s book to our program. Written & illustrated right here in Frankfort, the story “Beautifully Unique” tells a story of a young lady trying to fit in her own skin. It helped me teach a beautiful lesson about self-love and acceptance to our children this past Sunday. Thanks to you Eva, Renae Sewall, and Anita Hatchett for sharing this beautiful book with us.

MUSIC CAMP & VBS FORMS

office or on the Welcome Center counter. Return to
