We looked into cutting out the middle man, but the primary company that produces the milk bottles is not an “officially licensed vendor” for Penn State-related merchandise. We are unable to order bottles through them (yet) but are trying to find a solution to the licensing dilemma so that we can continue to use bottle sales to support our philanthropic endeavors. Campus Chatter: An Update from the Dairy Science Club

The fall semester is off to a great start for the Dairy Science Club as we wel-comed over 20 new members during our first meetings in September. Many of these assisted with the Pennsylvania Junior Dairy Show in Harrisburg, where over 600 animals were exhibited by youth from 42 counties. New members also enthusias-tically participated in a night of go-cart racing and our fall picnic.

Our club was well represented at the All-American Dairy Show and World Dairy Expo. Penn State’s dairy judging team (Sabrina Clark, Laura Lesher, Austin Milligan and Cara Trotter) placed in the top five teams at both contests. Addi-tionally, Halee Wasson was crowned PA Dairy Princess by new club member and outgoing state princess Savannah Zanic in Harrisburg. At the National Dairy Shrine banquet in Madison, former member Caitlyn Pool and current members Emily Shaw and Amber Gabel earned scholar-ships. Finally, Doug Boop became the first Pennsylvanian to win the Merle Howard Award at World Dairy Expo.

The Nittany Lion Fall Classic is rapidly approaching. Sale chair Cara Trotter and assistant Mike Barton have been work-ing hard to assemble a great lineup for this year’s sale scheduled for Saturday, November 12. We are also planning the holiday cheese sale under the leadership of George Dietrich and Simon Itle.

This past summer, club members traveled to Salt Lake City for the ADSA Student Affiliate Division meetings. The quiz bowl team of Amber Gabel, Michelle Hartzell, Amy Middleton, and Alton Rudgers placed first. For the fourth consecutive year, Penn State was named Outstanding Chapter by ADSA-SAD. The club also earned first place in both the yearbook and scrapbook competitions. In the undergraduate presentation contests, both Amber Gabel and Simon Itle placed third in their respective divisions.

For the remainder of fall, the club looks forward to intramural sports, several ser-vice projects, and other events. A couple of notable spring semester dates include the Spring Judging Contest on Saturday, March 18, 2017, and Dairy Expo on Sat-urday, April 8. If you have any questions about any of our activities, please contact Emily Shaw, Dairy Science Club Presi-dent, at [email protected].

The Future of Our Industry

Congratulations to five students graduating this December

Alumni tailgate held Oct. 1 The PSU Dairymen’s Club, Stockmen’s Club and the Department of Animal Sci-ence held the 11th annual football tailgate for alumni prior to the Oct. 1, 2016 game. Alumni were able to enjoy the Nittany Lions’ victory over the Minnesota Golden Gophers, 29-26. Watch the Dairymen’s Club website and Facebook page for in-formation about the 2017 DAS tailgate. If you’re interested in helping with the event, contact Dan Oliver at [email protected] or (814) 360-5069.

Milk bottles 101: How to sell successfullyMarcia Itle O’Connor sold an unprecedented number of milk bottles at Ag Progress Days this past August. The Dairymen’s board asked her to share her secrets to success. Contact a board member today if you’re interested in helping to sell milk bottles.

To start, I am no expert in this area, but I am involved in sales professionally for my job, have a passion for the dairy industry and am one of those people who would like to be a milk bottle collector. Here goes:

1. Smile – You are more likely to have people approach you if you have a friendly look on your face. This can be the first step to starting the conversation. Sometimes a “How are you today?” will brighten a person’s day. If they want to tell you how good (or bad) their day is, let them talk. There is a saying, “People don’t care what you have to say or what you know until they know how much you care.” Be genuine.

2. Gain interest – Why do you make the buying decisions you make? People are motivated by something that interests them, and everyone loves talking about them-selves. Ask them questions that pertain to them, such as, “Are you a PSU alum?” “How long have you been coming to Ag Progress Days?”

3. Penn State University- Who doesn’t love Penn State? If your prospective customer isn’t alumni, chances are they know someone who is, and that’s all the more reason to talk up the limited edition milk bottles.

4. Support agriculture and dairy science- Once you start the conversation, tell them how buying the milk bottles will support current students. Most everyone knows the debt and commitment students acquire while in college. It makes them “feel good” for their pur-chase. I like to also ask them if they attended PSU, or if they know any current students. When you “make it personal,” they can build an emotional connection with the purchase of a milk bottle.

5. Milk bottle collector enthusiast- There are people out there who love milk bottles – all shapes, sizes, states, colors, etc. If your prospective customer doesn’t collect milk bot-tles, chances are they know someone, want to start a collection or think it’s a great idea for someone they know. Once you tell them PSU milk bottles are of limited quantity, they will want at least one, guaranteed! —Information provided by Marcia Itle O’Connor
