RCLRC 2010 Hunt Test

The 2010 Hunt Test was a very successful event this year. Moving theevent to early July proved to be a very positive shift contributing to a

substantial increase in entries from 108 last year to 171 this year. With hotweather just 2 days before the test we were blessed with cooler days overthe weekend. Thanks to several members coming out and contributingtheir time and help from many other hunt test folks we provided anotherquality hunt test for all the handlers. Each year we receive numerouscompliments from the handlers how well organized Rose City’s Hunt Testsare run and how they like running in our events. The AKC rep. has showedup over the last 4 years and has always given the club positive complimentseach time. Members that are extended a very special thanks that were outthere helping each day are Dan and Deb Neal, Joanne Huntley, JudyMeyer, Celeste Smith, Jeff Kennedy, Wendy Burley, and Richard andMarilyn Parker. The Parkers provided an outstanding judges dinner onFriday evening and another successful raffle. The hunt test requires a lotof volunteers working very long days. Please take time to thank the abovemembers for their hard work in making Rose City one of the premier hunttests.

From the Editor...

I hope everyone got a chance to attend their favorite Labrador club activityin July. I went out to the HRT on Sauvie Island and worked as a go-for.

One of my jobs was to pick up the lunches and deliver them to the workerswhich made me a favorite with humans and dogs alike. The weather wasjust right ~ not too hot, not too cold and even more importantly it was notraining.

Speaking from the HRT side of things if we’d had more club members comeout and help, we would not have had to pay for gunners, throwers andpeople to plant the blinds which would have allowed the club to make alarger profit to spend on future events. You do not have to work both days, but one day’s labor would have been a great help. Please think aboutworking the HRT next year.

I have moved on to a new page layout program called PagePlus. Hopefullythis one will not give me the frustration my old program did. I’m now onmy newer computer too. So far so good.

See you at the September general meeting!

Celeste

2010 RCLRC SPECIALTY NEWS

It is hard to believe the Specialty has come and gone! Congratulations to all of the winners!! A Specialtydoes not just "happen", without many very busy and unselfish volunteers. I REALLY appreciate ALLthe SUPER HELP I received, BUT I would like to especially thank:

Jill Mahoney, Obedience ChairmanJill handled the Obedience and Rally venues so expertly! Jill was even Ring Steward one day!!

~ With Jill in charge, I never had to worry about a thing!

Kathy Hakola, Silent Auction ChairmanKathy made this year's auction so successful! I know how hard it is to juggle

showing and ring times with the auction!

Lili Lobingier, Lunch AND Breakfast ChairmanLili was ALREADY in charge of purchasing lunch drinks and distributing lunches. When 2 weeks out,I desperately needed at Breakfast Chairman, Lili stepped right in ~ organizing and handling all of it!!

~ even bringing a bouquet of fresh flowers for us!!

Cindy Freeman, Mister Station/Poop Bucket ChairmanCindy also answered my emergency email 2 weeks ago. She set up the Cooling Station for the dogs

and kept the Poop Buckets cleaned out, filled with fresh bleach and sanitary each day!

Susan Huntzinger, Trophy ChairmanSusan does her job so well, that I don't even know everything she does!

Purchasing trophies, soliciting donations, making up the beautiful 1st placement prizes, etc., etc.She makes it all "seem" effortless, but I know she puts in hours and hours and hours!

Judy Chambers, Hospitality ChairmanJudy also does her job so well, that everything seems to just take care of itself.  Making judge's hotel

reservations, judge's welcome baskets, ringside cooler with judge's personal drink choices, purchasing the judge's thank you gifts, running the Teddy Toss and Cash Raffle, etc etc.

Marilyn and Richard Parker, Trailer ChairmanThe Specialty would be an impossibility, without the tireless work of Marilyn and Richard! They are always arrive early, are so dependable, so organized, and they work SO hard!!!

Thank you, also, to all of our RCLRC Members, who worked so hard together to set up and clean up!!

I REALLY appreciate each and every one of you!!

The Passing of a Champion ~

Well, in my family men don’t cry. At least not where others can see it. Today I made a valiant effort. Imade it to the vet, made the arrangements, paid for the services and then went to help the old man outto the vet tech. Well, it took a while for the vet tech to get there, so I sat down on the steps took his oldgrizzled muzzle in my hands and looked into those brown eye as I have done countless times. That’swhen I lost it. He sat staring up at me in obvious pain and started to wag his tail and licked my hand asto say whatever it is just put your hands on me and everything will be alright. A true champion right tillthe end. I saw the vet tech coming leash in hand and then saw the coward turn and go back inside.Couple of minutes later she came outside a second time and set on the steps crying also. I will neversee how they can do their jobs. She asks if I wanted to stay with him for his final moments. I declinedshowing my yellow streak. I will always regret that I wasn’t man enough to go through that with him; hedeserved better. I got in my car and wasn’t man enough to turn the key. I just sat there for over fifteenminutes crying remembering the hunts, dog show triumphs and losses and all the other great dogs wecompeted with. The folks came to get in the car I was parked near, a little blonde haired girl with a youngmin pin puppy. She looked at me and then went and pointed me out to her mom obviously her heartgoing out to me. Her mom put her arm around her and talked to her as she got into her car. She wavedand smiled which just made it worse. Finally I manned up, got the car rolling and headed to a restaurantfor a late breakfast. As we all know food makes us feel better, ordered and stared at it. The waitressasked if the food was all right- I said fine, I just wasn’t feeling well.

Kale wasn’t the first dog that we showed, but he was our first show dog. Started at a young age andalways did well not just in the show ring, but also in the obedience and hunt test areas as well. He wasalso a Champion at home. Rather it was just cheering someone up or just being that dog that alwaysdid what was asked of him. I remember the past couple of years as I would take one of the youngerdogs hunting he would always be at the back door tail wagging ready to go. One day last year he gotin the truck, jumped in the back seat and it took me forever to get him out even though his body couldn’tdo it his mind said let’s give it a try anyway. He never fought if he got jumped, he would just make hisway back to me not a coward, he just knew it wasn’t allowed (I think he liked to see my reaction whenit happened - I never had his restraint so to speak).

Kale finished his championships with three Canadian majors and four American Majors several Jamsalong the way & I don’t know how many best of breeds. He also never missed the opportunity to shockand embarrass me in the obedience rings. One of my fondest memories will be at PSLRA going fourtimes for best all around Labrador. Was a great ambassador of the breed at the sportsman showswhere the kids would line up to throw things for him to catch and also at the youth pheasant hunts wherehe would slow down and basically point the birds for the young gunners.

Thanks to all of you cheered him on in the years past. I will say a true champion passed today, Onethat someday I will add my ashes to his for eternal rest at our favorite blind out in the mighty ColumbiaRiver.

Thank you Kale for being what you were to this family and to the breed.Rest in Peace
