Year 7-12 Interviews

Please refer to the Term 2 Home Planner for the complete Calendar.

This term will see six new students starting in Reception; we welcome Jordan and Shanayah Karpany, Brodie Dwight, Charlotte Wiltshire, Saffron Knibbs and Ella Osborn to Moonta Area School. We hope you really enjoy the next stage of your education. We have also had several transfers in from other schools; we welcome Riley Williams, Cheneya, Makayla and Aaron Berg, Graham and Jamie Whitaker, Ethan Carr and their families to the Moonta School community. Reflection is a meaning making process that moves a learner from one experience into the next with

deeper understanding. Reflection therefore is an important aspect of any good education system and one that is given high priority at Moonta Area School. Student reports were distributed to secondary students at the end of term and students will be using this information to reflect on their results, what these results mean in terms of what they have already achieved and importantly what they need to do next to improve further. The best students will use reflection as a part of their everyday routine. One suggested technique is for students to share their learning

targets with parents to improve their learning. I hope many students will share this process with you at home. IMPORTANT REQUEST If your child rides their bike to school please ensure they are wearing a helmet. It has been reported to me that several students are riding to and from school helmetless along Port Hughes Road ….. this road in particular has many blind spots for drivers and riding without a helmet could result in tragedy.

Well done to the following students who have completed their challenge: Liana Warren – Ms van Galen Alexa Northey – Ms Spaans William Bozarovski – Ms Reid Matty Martin – Ms Ryan Decklan Waters – Mrs Jarman Keely Matthews – Mrs Perkins Congratulations to Rebecca Stock, Peyton Bagshaw, Dexter Goncalves, Savannah Prout and Christina Cocks for completing Beyond the Challenge. This week’s $10 voucher for Moonta Newsagency goes to Alexa Northey. Thankyou to parents for the great support that they have given to their children in support of the Premier’s Reading Challenge.

Netball – Congratulations to Claudia Hatcher, Kelsie Woods, Kara Hackett, Tiffany Clarke and Jasmine Crocker for making the SAPSASA netball squad. These girls will train with the squad for 3 weeks and then head off to Adelaide to play for a week in May. Both coaches also come from our Moonta community – Carina Congdon and Sally Hackett. Football – Congratulations to Adam Scott, Harry Platten, Bob White, Mark Francis, Dylan Slack, Luke Chapman, Calen Buchanan-Sully, Jackson Zwar, Braden Aldridge & Lachy Buck (res) for making the SAPSASA footy squad. These boys will train for 3 weeks together at the start this term and then spend a week in Adelaide for the SAPSASA carnival in May. Knockout Footy / Netball – our Year 6/7 teams will be starting the knockout rounds early this term. Soccer – Friday, week 1 there will be a soccer round robin carnival held at the school. Teams were created late term 1. We have 9 junior teams (Year 5-7) all of which will be managed by an older student and 5 senior teams (Year 8-10). FFSA will be running the day. From this carnival we will choose a junior boys and a junior girls knockout soccer team to play in the knockout carnivals during term 2, which should be a good lead up to SAPSASA soccer selections (a first for our area).

Friday 5th April Moonta Area School Senior Band made their debut performance for 2013 at the YP Youth Expo on Friday in week 10 of term 1. The new line up including two new singers Carron Daveson and Sasha Glasgow along with drummer Nick Colliver joined last years’ band members Zac Butler on guitar, Gemma Ivens on Sax, Georgia Ivens on piano and Willis Daveson on Bass Guitar. With four of our members being siblings this band is truly shaping up to be a performing family affair especially with Vince Ivens helping with guitars and playing! The band performed new songs they have worked on since the start of the year, and with only 8 contact lessons did a fantastic job, especially our new singers who had not performed in public before! The band is looking forward to competing in this year’s Balaklava

Eisteddfod in August.

SAPSASA Lawn Bowls Report This semester we signed up for SAPSASA Lawn Bowls. We had four trainings before the day at the Moonta Bowling Club. On the day we won two games and lost two games. We had to go to a tie breaker which unfortunately we lost meaning we just missed out on playing in finals. We still felt like winners anyway because we had made such an improvement on last year. Our coaches for the event were Brian and Betty Gum from the Moonta Bowling Club. They worked with us weekly to improve our game, their advice and guidance was invaluable. Thank you to Brian and Betty and also a big thanks to Trevor and Cheryl Gibbons for transport on the day.

NAPLAN is a national assessment tool and all States administer the test in accordance with nationally agreed protocols. Our students in years 3, 5, 7, 9 will be taking part in the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy this term on May 14th to 16th. The assessments will occur in the mornings and will be Language Conventions and Writing on Tuesday, Reading on Wednesday and Numeracy on Thursday. This is just a snap shot of your child’s learning at that point in time and is just one tool the school uses to record learning progress throughout the year. If you think your child should be exempt or withdrawn from the tests you need to contact Robyn Dalziel, Deputy Principal at school so the appropriate paper work can be signed by you. Phone 88 252 088. An exemption is for students who have an intellectual disability or / have English as a second language and have only been in Australian since May 2012, or / have a significant co-existing condition which severely limits capacity to participate in the tests. A withdrawal is based on parent philosophical or personal reasons. If the paper work is not completed and returned to Robyn your child will be expected to sit the tests.

One Card is coming… The final data has been extracted from our old library management system and we are now running in very basic mode until we ‘Go Live’ on 16th May as part of the SA Public Library Network. There will be many benefits for library users once this happens but in the meantime we can only check out and check in items and add new users to our system. This week students will be given information about the change to the One Card network and next week they will receive their cards. We will post a letter to each family explaining the changes. If you have students in years Reception to Year 6 their cards will also be included with the letter. If your students are in Year 7 or above we will give them the card to manage. We look forward to this exciting change and will keep you all posted.

\ Primary Schools Festival of Music Assessment at KMS

Moonta Area School Choir had a group rehearsal/assessment at KMS on Friday 5th April, week 10. Deb Hepworth, who conducts the choirs come performance time at Festival Theatre, conducted the assessment with choirs from Kadina Primary and Port Broughton. The choirs sounded fantastic together and sang to their best ability and received a reasonable assessment. Copper triangle choirs have a lot on their plate with the upcoming Kernewek Lowender tunes to practice along with the Festival of music songs so well done to Moonta and Kadina for doing their best at the assessment!

Whilst everyone else in the school packed up and left school early for holidays on Friday 12th April, the Year 12 Hospitality students were working hard to prepare the food for Josie and Wayne Matthew’s wedding, to be held the next day. A brief break was taken for pizza tea and the last of the students walked out of the kitchen at 10 p.m. that night, feeling confident that they were organised for the next day. Saturday saw a flurry of activity to finish the preparation and transport the food to the Bowling Club for the reception. Everyone was so organised we had a period of respite before the hectic service of food began. The students presented high quality finger food to 120 very appreciative guests. The professional manner in which the students worked and served the food was a credit to them and portrayed a very positive image of the school. The bridal party and guests were very impressed by the quality of the food and the service the girls provided. By 10 p.m. on the Saturday night there was a group of Year 12 girls who had sore feet, were worn out but very proud of their effort and ready to start their holidays! Very well done girls!
