If you have not already heard the great news, Girls on the Run (GOTR) is coming to Berks County! Girls on the Run is a 12-week program for young girls–– in grades 3 through 8–– creatively incorporating running with lessons about self-esteem, peer pressure and team-building. The organization, which functions as an after-school program and is led by certified volunteer coaches, also includes a community service project chosen by the girls and culminates with a 5K run or walk event.

The goals of GOTR are to encourage positive emotional, social, mental, spiritual, and physical development, empow-ering girls to believe in themselves, live a fit and healthy lifestyle, make wise decisions, avoid at-risk activities and give back to the community.

GOTR-Berks is in the process of establishing as a local council and looking to partner with the great community groups that already serve our County. Pagoda Pacers is a natural fit to help us reach our goals, and we are looking for your input into how we work together. Do you have a young girl in your family that would benefit from this program? Do you have contacts in any of the school districts that could help us establish a program site? Would you be interested in being a running mentor for one of our girls? Can you volun-teer as a coach? Are you willing to make a donation? Help us help our girls learn how valuable a fit lifestyle can be!We look forward to launching our first program site in the spring of 2013.

For more information on how you or your daughter can get involved, contact Kim Rivera at [email protected] and like us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/gotrberks

The Hills’ Rock Massanutten Mountain MMT 100 Mile Run - 2012by: Jeff Hills

Continued

Okay so it’s been almost exactly 3 yrs. to the day since I started running. I had decided to get into shape when Kyle graduated from IUP. He had run Cross Country in High School and College so I thought it would be a way that I could help him get involved and meet some new friends since he hadn’t grown up in the area. Fast forward to Now….he has since moved to Yuma, AZ (Hot-test City in the US) he’s teaching Art, nominated for Teacher of the Year and now the Head Coach of the Yuma High School

.maeT yrtnuoC ssorCWhen he moved last July ’11, it was one of the hardest things I ever had to deal with – saying good bye to my son/my train-

.rentrap iks ym/yddub gniFor at least a week after he moved the only way I could communicate with him was via Text – I wasn’t ready to speak without getting emotional (aka/crying). After he moved we both looked

.rehtegot nur ot nalp dluoc ew taht owt ro ecar a rof dnuoraAnd what we found was The Zane Grey 50 Miler, Payson, AZ which was billed as one of the hardest 50 Milers in the country on April 12 followed by MMT 100 Miler (a Pacer favorite) just 3 weeks. after Zane Grey which he agreed to be my Pacer on May 12-13 since he did not yet, until Zane

Getting Kyle to MMT was going to present a problem. He had obligations that he needed to take care of at school

going to be able to catch would be 7PM that night that

-riving in Baltimore at 9:30AM – Sat. followed by 2-1/2 hr. drive that Jeff Merritt (Kyle’s older/surrogate brother) had agreed to pick him up and get him to the race sometime early Sat. afternoon.

The plan had been for Kyle to sleep whenever and wher-ever he could so he would be fresh and wide awake for our journey when he would begin to Pace me at Camp Roosevelt (mile 64 of 103.7 miles). Well best laid plans were out the window – Kyle enjoyed the company of the many Pagoda Pacers that he hadn’t seen for quite some time and further got caught up into the race mania that in effect never allowed him to close his eyes since what turned out to be Thurs. night. What was suppose to be the

My adventure began abruptly at 2:45 AM Sat. after a night of a few short restless naps. Finally the day and time had come to just run – no more tapering, carbo-loading and no more waiting! The air was cold, crisp, drenched with heavy dew. We were soon off to the races at exactly 4AM and couldn’t have been happier.

As we proceeded out of the start and up the dirt road the “Three Amigos – Phil, Eric & Myself” fell into place and a good pace (Eric leading most of AM) which we’d maintain

and alternate leading for the better part of the race.

As we started our climb up Short Mtn. (not so short – believe me) I realized that one thing (there’s always that one thing)

I forgot – change the bat-teries on my head lamp. I would have been better off carrying an oil lamp.

By the time we reached Elizabeth Furnace (mile 33) the pads on my feet were starting burn and I shred-ded my ankles from nego-tiating the rocks kicking my

.teef gnisoppo htiw selknaThe residual damage to my feet were the result of my last Ultra (Zane Grey) that Kyle and I had run just 3 wks. earlier. At Shawl Gap (mile 38) my crew took care of my feet. See that thing hanging there I told Kyle – cut it off, is what Karen Rule

.gniyas em derebmemerWe tried to clean and apply bandages to both ankles but they fell off before I could run _ mile down the road. Mole skin was applied to the pads of my feet which provided some relief.

Up to this point the run was enjoyable the scenery spectacular and the 3 Amigos were upbeat, well at least 2 of the 3. Shortly after leaving Elizabeth Furnace we came across a 4-5 Ft. black snake that came, unbeknownst to Phil, within inches of left foot while it tried to cross the trail. After a few moments of trying to coax the snake across the trail the use of a few branches guided the snake back into the woods.

The beautiful bright sunny sky now started taking it’s toll – it was Hot! We were going to have to be judicious to drink enough

didn’t fair so well vomiting on the side of the trail ultimately end-ing their race.

The 4 mile section between Indian Grave and Habron Gap (54 miles) though easy seemed to go on forever. I couldn’t wait to re-unite with my crew and re-apply moleskin add gel inserts to my shoes. Each little pebble on this section just seemed to hit that one very sensitive spot on the pad of each foot. To make things a little more interesting on this rather benign road sec-

as the driver barreled down the road kicking up dirt, dust and pebbles that peppered us as he passed. Surprisingly the driver of the truck must have known Phil and started to back up to

.ecar eht fo ecnalab eht rof sehsiw tseb sih dnetxe ylsuoivboTurns out – he didn’t know Phil, just saying! Upon rounding the turn we could see our Crews (what a welcome sight) and what looked like the rest of our Wed. Night Running Group lined up along the stretch of road. I’m not sure how many Pacers, Fam-ily & Friends were there but I can tell you it was so awesome to see them all!

The climb (9.8 miles) to Camp Roosevelt (mile 64) is grueling, tough and steep. Shortly after starting we were met with a run-ner heading towards us – Phil told him he was going the wrong way – unfortunately his day was done. I neglected to take my

station in time. Of course not having run this section before

Page 4: UPCOMING FROM THE PRESIDENT EVENTS · *Charity Run benefiting Mary’s Shelter June 27, 2012 Run: Blue Marsh - Church Rd. Parking Lot ... Send Resume/Letter of Interest & Clearances

began to question whether I’d make it in time. By now I could only drink water, no more Gatorade for me. I was still do-ing most of my fueling on trail alternating between Gels and

trick. All day long I kept telling myself I would re-lube at each

become a severe brush burn on my inner thigh. Now all I thought about was picking up my Pacer, my son – Kyle (the Desert Warrior). We arrived still at light – thank God! Kyle

didn’t take too much time and off we went after a brief lube

Now the adventure begins for Father and Son. The 6 mile climb to Gap Creek (69.6 miles) was our next destination on some rocky stream bed of a rough road and single-track switchbacks through a few campsites. Pretty tame stuff as compared to what I had already run and what we were going to be faced with later. Would Kyle be able to run at my ratch-eted down pace, push it or take off and leave me for dead were all thoughts that came to mind.

As we started our climb up Jawbone on our way to the Visi-

a little tired. The ridge along Kerns Mountain is grueling up, over, down, around and repeats over giant boulders pep-

section my feet were killing me, I tried to run on the edge of the road where what little grass/ dirt would provide at least some relief. Approximately _ of the way down the road Kyle and I were running side by side - we either hit some sort of time space continuum or were abducted by aliens or truth be told we actually fell asleep while running. Seriously one of the craziest things ever – did you ever nod off behind the wheel and jerk your head back awake? I did this time but only while running, and told Kyle “Oh my god I just fell asleep” and his reply was “me too”. That was some crazy stuff – the

coffee with a little bit of sugar which brought us both back to life, what a life saver.

Now we were off to climb Bird Knob (81.6 miles) which I had remembered to be very steep with what seemed to be many false tops from last year when I paced Phil. For awhile I thought we went off course and were heading back in the wrong direction. Kyle assured me we were on course and we continued. We arrived at the remote aid station on top of the mountain and enjoyed a quick cup of home made New England Clam Chowder…yum!

The following gravel road section seems to go on forever, surely we missed our turn we thought, stopped, paused and continued until we were almost at the bottom when we could

During the climb back to the ridge we met a friend Peppy Le Pew (skunk) that sauntered out of the woods 4 ft. in front of us. We stopped, backed up and waited for him to pass all the while praying his tail would never rise. Not too much later (within the hour) I barely missed stepping on the head of a Copperhead as he angrily negotiated his way off the trail. By

the time we got to the Picnic area (87.9 miles) I had lost what little lead I had built on the runners behind us. My feet were burning we had walked much more of the course than I had hoped to.

As we left the Picnic area for Gap Creek (96.8 miles) we had an opportunity that allowed us to get back on the run and we took advantage of it. The climb to the ridge on this section of switchbacks is extremely steep and never ending one of the many vivid memories I had from pacing last year was when Phil said, “Do you see that up there” and I replied “What that helicopter” and he willfully told me no – that’s a head lamp of a runner - that’s where were heading. At one point I (hard to believe) fell on one of the steep sections having to grab on to and hugging a rock as my right side dangled over the edge. Once again Kyle had to bend down grab my shirt with both hands to pick me up and dust me off. As we entered the road section we could see numerous glowing yellow lights and a lot of bats, we thought, which turned out to actually be the eyes Whip Poor Wills lit up by

aid station.

As we arrived, we were once again so warmly greeted by the (B.D.P.C.M.- Best Damn Pacers Crew Members) you could ever ask for. Kyle and I were ready to wrap this ad-venture up and as I said for all to hear “Splash and Dash” out of the aid station…..until I saw 2 coolers…SWEET TEA…which stopped me in my tracks! Surely I had time to enjoy 2 cups of this southern elixir.

line and we pushed the pace a bit. At some point during this portion and certainly my favorite comment from Kyle during the race was “Dad you’re totally Bad Ass” which I’m assuming is a good thing and hopefully not because he ran behind me? When we hit the road section we were continu-ally looking over our shoulders to see which Pacer would be barreling down behind us. How close was Phil, Beth had been running strong all weekend and we heard Mike

We ran most of the road section with a few short walk

27:09:20. Shortly thereafter the rest of the Pagoda Pacers,

other. What an incredible testimony to the strength of our Club.

It really and truly doesn’t get much better than this as a par-ent - I couldn’t have done it without Kyle. He knew when I needed to talk and I think even more importantly when I didn’t. I’m so proud to call him my son, my running buddy, my best friend and now my Pacer!

Even if you aren’t out to win, the race is runon challenging yet very runnable trails in beautiful Nolde Forest, has great schwag and virtually no bottle necks.Challenge your families and coworkers to come out and compete on a “level” playing field… Hey ringers: Here’s achance to show off a little by passing the whole pack!

What’s an age graded start. Those who have more than a few of grey hairs or have yet to hit puberty will get a headstart based on age and gender. Typically the oldest female wave starts first. Wave starts will bounce back and forth betweensexes, as the handicap derived from the World Masters Association dictates. The actual handicap for each division isposted at www.PagodaPacers.com and will be declared final for 2012 a month prior to start. That means you startwith your age group (call them your competition if you like). Your handicap division may or may not start withanother handicap division. For example, it’s possible that 60-64 year old men might start at the same time as 50-54year old women. Or maybe not.

We have our little baby, Deliah. She is four years old and she is part australian herding dog and part ger-man short haired pointer.Born and raised: The "big" metropolis of Re-inholds, PA, so I haven't fallen to far from the tree.Years running: From all the stories I've heard about me as a baby, I would have to say shortly after I started walking. Were you a jock in high school: Yes, I played soc-cer, basketball, swim-ming and cross country. My inspiration is: My uncle,Tony DoddsAh-Ha moment: Being diagnosed with a carci-noid tumor. It changed my life forever. It made me re-evaluate my life and I real-ized that the things I was focusing on in life weren't really important and that the most important things in life that you should never take for granted are your family, friends and faith.Fav running related book and/or movie: Born to RunDo you keep a journal: When I feel like it.When the run gets tough, I tell myself: Why am I dumb enough to follow Swamp again? When the run is going well I think about: How lucky I am to

have great running friends. Also, I think about how lucky I am to have the ability to run.I feel this, about hills: Its a love/hate relationship.Do you prefer long, slow runs or do you prefer fast, hard ones:

Thats a little personal don't you think? Oh wait, I mis-read the question…I prefer long, slow runs so I can talk to people and have fun.Do you stretch before or af-ter: Whats stretching?Lite or Lager: Not into the Nascar beers. Give me a good stout or IPA and I'm a happy girl.Vanilla or chocolate: Dark chocolateRecovery tips: Drink up!Toughest race and why: Stone Mill 50mi I mean 55mi because it was 54.7mi of runnable misery with

laughs. Oh and did I men-tion the race director is quite the comedian as he took

Best race ever and why: Jay Peak 50K in Vermont. It was the most beautiful and varied terrain I have ever run through. The aide stations rocked and I was with two good friends.Proudest moment: Finishing Stone Mill 55mi raceHappiest moment: To many to decide on one.I love this quote: Live for today because yesterday is gone and tomorrow may never come.Advice to others: Live with no regrets and if you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything.

26.2 Things You Always Wanted To Know About PACER PROFILE: Jessica Gockley But Were Afraid To Ask
