The 63rd Shetland County Drama Festival promises to offer another varied range of entertainment, from Juniors to Adults, in all manner of presentations. This year’s adjudicator is Mr Michael Emans (Glasgow), who is visiting for the first time. He is attached to the Rapture Theatre Group who are a well-known Scottish touring company.

LIvE @ MAREEL

At Mareel, we love listening to great live music and the venue has been specifically designed with great acoustics in mind. Mareel’s Main Auditorium is the perfect space for any kind of concert, from orchestra to rock band. It can be arranged for a standing show, theatre seating, cabaret seating, or bespoke options, and the sound and lighting equipment are state of the art, all of which means that every gig in Mareel is unique and enjoyable for all who attend. This month and beyond we have a great selection of events lined up in the Auditorium and other spaces in Mareel.

CAFÉ BAR

At the Café Bar in Mareel we pride ourselves on using fresh, locally sourced ingredients to create delicious, rustic dishes and refreshments - the perfect accompaniment to a day out at Mareel. We offer a wide selection of teas, coffees, other hot and cold drinks, bar refreshments and light snacks, so come along and enjoy a fabulous view, a comfy seat, and some delicious food and drink. To find out what bar snacks, tasty breakfasts, brunch, lunch and sweet treats are currently available, please check the board daily or ask our friendly staff. The Café Bar also plays host to regular events which are free to attend, from live music to DJs, the details of which you can find on page 8 of this booklet.

DEAN OWENS: CASHBACK

FRIDAY 1 MARCHDOORS: 8PM, START: 8.30PMMAREEL AUDITORIUM

Dean Owens returns to Shetland to play an amazing set based around his new album, Cash Back (Songs I Learned From Johnny), together with favourites from his previous solo releases and The Felsons’ back catalogue. Join Dean as he takes you through some of his favourite songs by The Man in Black, and some of his own from his critically acclaimed albums.

He will be joined by local guitarist Arthur Nicolson (First Foot Soldiers) and support at Mareel will come from a selection of local singers & songwriters including Sheila Henderson, Freda Leask, Chloe Robertson, Keirynn Topp, Arthur Nicolson and Alice Mullay.

Dean will also be playing at the Mid Yell Hall on Saturday 2 March, with supportfrom local musicians.

Hear readings by two poets who engage with nature in their work: Jen reads in Shetland and is broadcast to Edinburgh, while Kathleen reads in Edinburgh and is broadcast to Shetland. They’ll discuss whether technology and nature can support one another, how contemporary poetry responds to modern landscapes and link up with live feeds from Scotland’s wilderness.

POETRY IMMERSION WORKSHOP WITH JEN HADFIELD

Full day workshop for adults (16+) that will take you through the life cycle of a poem. Jen will discuss where a poem comes from, what it can be and where it can take you, as you embark on experiments exploring image, idea, sound and performance. Writers of all levels of confidence welcome. The event is joint funded by Shetland Arts and Creative Scotland’s Live Literature programme.

Come and join the Bon Accord Silver Band - the North of Scotland’s Premier Brass Band - in concert on their 50th anniversary Northern Isles tour. DONNIE MUNRO FRIDAY 29 MARCHDOORS: 8PM, START: 8.30PMMAREEL AUDITORIUM

Former Runrig frontman Donnie Munro has enjoyed considerable success as a solo artist and writer and is all set to perform a show in Shetland. Donnie will revisit a wide range of material spanning his career with Runrig and with his own band. He will be joined at Mareel by Eric Cloughley and acclaimed local fiddler Maggie Adamson. Donnie is currently making plans for a new album in the nature of a musical anthology. His Heart of America album was recently voted Album of the Year at the Scottish Trad Awards, and his concept album and live show An Turas (The Journey) was greeted with great critical acclaim. Shetland Arts is delighted to welcome such a talented musician to Mareel.

There are two main categories; ‘Open’ encompassing all styles and ‘Traditional’ focussing on the traditional Shetland style, with the overall winner hailed as “The Shetland Young Fiddler of the Year.”

MATTHEW BARLEY: AROUND BRITTENTuesday 4 JuneMareel AuditoriumMatthew Barley celebrates 100 years of Benjamin Britten with an ambitious national tour. In what promises to be a fascinating and intriguing solo performance, showcasing his ever-growing virtuosity as a world-renowned cellist, Barley places Britten’s powerful Third Cello Suite at the centre of a programme which also includes a suite by J.S. Bach, who greatly inspired Britten. The programme also includes solo cello music by Tavener and specially-commissioned new works by Dai Fujikura, James MacMillan and DJ Jan Bang.

Team Malawi Volunteer Project 2014 presents

INFERNO TO MALAWIFriday 14 JuneDoors: 7pm, Start: 7.30pmMareel AuditoriumShetland’s Got Talent winners Inferno - along with their two junior groups Peerie Sparks and Ignite - perform together for the first time in their new home at Mareel. Formed in 2010 under the guidance of Jenny Teale and Mark Wyle, the dance troupe will perform a variety of routines including their award-winning routine and some exciting surprises. This performance is in aid of Team Malawi Volunteer Project 2014 where a group of seven Shetland volunteers will be travelling to Africa in June 2014 to work in schools and help orphans.£8

PEATBOG FAERIESSaturday 15 JuneMareel AuditoriumPeatbog Faeries are a largely instrumental Celtic fusion band featuring Shetland’s own Ross Couper on fiddle. Their music embodies many styles and influences, including folk, electronica, rock and jazz, but their main influence is traditional celtic music. The band’s unique sound is created through a mix of programmed effects and traditional celtic arrangements, played on bagpipes, fiddles, and whistles. The band have twice won “Live Band of the Year” at the Scottish Traditional Music Awards and were nominated for “Live Band of the Year” at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

RACHEL SERMANNIWednesday 26 JuneMareel AuditoriumRachel Sermanni is a Scottish folk musician from Carrbridge in the Scottish Highlands. Although relatively new to the Scottish folk scene, she has already toured with a number of well-known folk and indie artists. Rachel has been described as “Scotland’s face of folk” and 2013 promises to be an even bigger year for the stunning singer.
