PROGRAM

“Coming Together To Prevent Heart Disease”

Gail Larson introduced our speaker by telling the story of a friend who was treated and put back on the road to

health by a certified primary care doctor at the Everett Clinic, Dr. Kevin Clay. Dr. Clay is Division Chief of

Page 3: Upcoming Meeting Programs - · PDF filePresident Andy opened the meeting with the ... the OSPI and even happier that the recall of Everett School ... Sean Kelly discovered where he

Ambulatory Medicine for Providence Regional Medical Center and proud of the partnerships that are “Coming

Together to Prevent Heart Disease”, his topic for today’s program.

Dr. Clay gave me his notes because I was swamped by the statistics he presented but you know what doctors’

handwriting is like! The following is important information for us all to not just remember but act on!

He said that 1% of the population generates 30% of the cost and 20% of the population generates 89% of the

cost of medical care in our country. Determinants of health: Smoking, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and

alcohol use together account for 40% of all deaths. He was concerned that the current disease management

system treats signs and symptoms rather than the root cause. He told us of the unnecessary service, excess ad-

ministrative costs, ineffective delivery system, fraud, high prices and missed preventative opportunities that

create our excessive healthcare costs.

His hope is that we take advantage community-wide of the opportunities to avoid 71% of cancers, 70% of

strokes, 82% of heart disease and 91% of diabetes with LIFE-

STYLE CHANGES. Dr. Clay’s Thought for the Day: Genet-

ics load the gun, lifestyle pulls the trigger…ie, don’t blame it

on your ancestors, change your unhealthy habits and prevent

your own disease.

Prevention studies noted were Rockford Illinois project, Van-

derbilt, ThedaCare, and the Boeing Project. Each of these

studies reduced health care cost significantly through lifestyle

education, coaching, Complete Health Improvement Program

(CHIPs) and lifestyle change. More importantly, these studies

proved that significant health improvement was possible in al-

ready chronically diseased patients using these lifestyle chang-

es.

Dr. Clay ended with a plea for a “Culture of Wellness” with us all working together to change lifestyles—our

own and our community’s. Take these steps:

· Learn how to eat healthy and to prepare healthy – a plant based diet

· Exercise 30 minutes 5 time weekly -- MOVE

· Sleep 8 hours nightly

· Drink 8 glasses of water daily

· Avoid snacks

· Stop smoking, use minimal alcohol

· Develop spiritual side of life – be happy, decrease stress

· Develop and maintain positive family & friend support systems

He closed with an invitation to a community forum on Friday, April 19th, 8am to 3:30 pm at the Tulalip Con-

ference Center with nationally recognized speakers from the studies he spoke of earlier. Also invited are Boe-

ing, Everett Clinic, Premera, Regence, Providence, Sno Co Health Dist and School District. Goal: Everett

will create a unique preventative program for our community resulting in a healthier community with reduced

health care costs and overall reduce cost to business.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS AND ADJOURNMENT
