WE NEED THE ANTI-VENOM: The Dodgers tonight take on the
Arizona Diamondbacks for the second time this year, following
Arizona’s three-game sweep last week at Chase Field, which ran the
Dodgers losing streak against the Snakes to nine games – the longest
regular season winning or losing streak for either team in the 21-year
history of the series. Los Angeles had lost eight consecutive games to
the Diamondbacks on two previous occasions in 2005 and 2012.
Following the weekend series with Arizona, the Dodgers travel to San
Diego for the first time in 2018 and play three games with the Padres
Monday-Wednesday before returning home Friday to face the Nationals.
The nine-game regular season skid against the Diamondbacks
began on Aug. 29, 2017, but prior to that game, the Dodgers
were 48-22 (.686) in games against Arizona dating to the start
of the 2014 campaign, including a 27-8 mark at Dodger
Stadium (.771).
GOOD OMEN: According to STATS, LLC, the Diamondbacks have
lost seven consecutive games on Friday the 13th, dating back to 2010. In
that time, the Dodgers have gone 5-2 on Jason’s favorite day.
Also according to STATS, LLC, the Dodgers are 0-6 this
season when allowing the opposing team to score first. Three
other teams (Nationals, Royals, and Rangers) have yet to win
when allowing the opposition to cross home plate first.
NO FREEBIES: The Dodgers’ 3.61 ERA ranks eighth in the NL, but
they are making the opposition earn it as their 28 walks are the fewest in
the league. The only team in baseball to issue fewer free passes than the
Dodgers are the Oakland A’s, who have walked 26 hitters.
KENTA DAY (FINALLY!): Dodger right-hander Kenta Maeda will
take the mound tonight for his second start of the season, 13 days after
his first start against the Giants on March 31 (5.0 IP, 0 ER. 5 H, 10 K).
Maeda has also made one appearance out of the bullpen, tossing a
scoreless inning on April 7 at San Francisco. This season marks the
Japanese right-hander’s third with Los Angeles and last year he went 13-
6 with one save and a 4.22 ERA in 29 games (25 starts). Maeda, who
turned 30 on Wednesday, also positioned himself as a weapon out of the
bullpen last year, going 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA (2 ER/8.0 IP) in four relief
outings during the regular season and then 2-0 with a 0.84 (1 ER/10.2
IP) in nine games during the 2017 Postseason.
In his last start, Maeda fanned at least 10 batters for just the
second time in his career, with the other instance coming on
July 10, 2016 vs. San Diego, when he struck out a career high
13 Padres.
Maeda is 3-3 with a 4.72 ERA (29 ER/55.1 IP) in 11 career
starts against the Diamondbacks, but has been strong against
the Arizona at Dodger Stadium, going 1-0 with a 2.28 ERA (7
ER/27.2 IP) while posting a .194 opponents’ batting average
in five starts. Since his rookie year in 2016, the sample size for
Maeda vs. Arizona hasn’t been small:

GREAT MINDS: The Los Angeles Dodgers kicked off their
celebration of Jackie Robinson Day by hosting a “Breaking Barriers: A
Legacy of Jackie Robinson” today for 100 students from John Muir High
School (Jackie Robinson’s alma mater), Garfield High School and others
from select LAUSD schools, where students heard from leaders in
sports, science and business who have hit notable milestones in their
careers. The program also included an exercise where students reflected
on their own personal barriers and came up with solutions on how to
overcome obstacles and become change-makers in their prospective
fields. The panel was made up of Dodger Manager Dave Roberts,
Dodger Research & Development Manager Megan Schroeder, Coca-
Cola North America Vice President of Latin Affairs Peter Villegas and
NASA Sr. Project Planner/Scheduler Jeffrey Slade.
MAKING A COMEBACK: On Wednesday, Baseball Commissioner
Robert D. Manfred, Jr. announced at a press conference at Dodger
Stadium that Major League Baseball has awarded the 2020 All-Star
Game Presented by Mastercard and accompanying All-Star Week
festivities to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 2020 Midsummer Classic,
which will be the 91st edition in the event’s history, will make its return
to Los Angeles for the first time since 1980. This will mark the fourth
time in franchise history that the Dodgers will hold the Midsummer
Classic, including the third time in Los Angeles and the second at
Dodger Stadium. Prior to the 1980 All-Star Game, the Dodgers played
host to the Midsummer Classic in 1959 at the Los Angeles Memorial
Coliseum and in 1949 at Ebbets Field.
I’VE GOT SIX ON IT: The Dodger lineup has been scuffling of late
offensively, hitting just .233 as a team, which ranks 11th in the National
League. However, the club has received excellent production out of the
No. 6 hole thus far:
MLB, Highest On-Base Pct. From 6th Spot – 2018
Seattle Mariners .450
Los Angeles Dodgers .422 (19/45)
Pittsburgh Pirates .412
Los Angeles Angels .397
New York Mets .370 SOURCE: STATS, LLC
Six different Dodgers have started in the No. 6 spot in the order
this season, but the bulk of those starts have gone to Matt
Kemp (five), who’s hitting .355 (11-for-31) with a homer and
three doubles on the young season. Kemp, who has at least two
hits in three consecutive games, is a lifetime .294 hitter against
the Diamondbacks and his 35 homers are tied with Adrían
González for the most among active players vs. Arizona.
CONTACT HIGH: Dodger third baseman Logan Forsythe ranks
among the league leaders when it comes to the percentage of his wings
put in play:
NL, Highest Pct. of Swings Put in Play – 2018
(qualifying batters)
DJ LeMahieu, Col 62.0
Joe Panik, SF 54.8

A BUSY DAY IN HISTORY: Today marks the nine-year anniversary
of second baseman Orlando Hudson’s cycle, in which he became just
the second L.A. Dodger to accomplish the feat and the first at Dodger
Stadium. “O-Dawg” achieved the cycle against the Giants during the
Dodgers’ 2009 home opener. Last July, Dodger first baseman Cody
Bellinger recorded the third cycle in L.A. Dodger history at Miami.
Today is also the six-year anniversary of Aaron Harang’s
nine consecutive strikeouts to start the game against the Padres
as well as the 64th anniversary of Hall of Famer Walter
Alston’s debut in 1954.
WHAT A STORY!: Prior to tonight’s contest, Lakers’ rookie guard
Andre Ingram will throw the ceremonial first pitch. Ingram, 32, made
his NBA debut Tuesday night after spending 10 years in the G League.
Tonight is the club’s second “Friday Night Fireworks,
presented by Denny’s” of the season and the show will be set
to music of the 1970s.
The sold out “Pups at the Park” dog parade presented by
AvoDerm Natural and Nylabone takes place tomorrow
evening at 5:00 p.m. prior to the Dodgers’ 6:1- p.m. game.
