At least once a year, State of Texas Peace Officers must qualify with the firearms they carry or could possibly be required to use at any time.
“The Texas A&M University-Texarka-na University Police Department is no exception, and we must be prepared if the time ever arises that requires us to use our firearms,” said Chief Alex Serrano.
On Monday, July 26, all six A&M-Texar-kana police officers underwent firearms qualifications at the Texarkana, Arkansas Police Department’s firing range. They were qualified by Officer Brian Burns of the Wake Village Police Department, who is a State of Texas certified firearms instructor.

Firearms qualificationqualification, we were required to shoot 50 rounds from our duty weapons from different distances, as well as fire our weapons in multiple ways. We qualified using anchor point shooting, which is up close and personal, one-hand shooting (strong and weak hand), timed re-loads and regular two-hand shooting at various distances. We were also required to shoot our department shotguns and any back-up weapons we carry.”

Certified Occupational Safety Specialist (COSS) is a unique, curriculum-based program that builds a solid foundation in both General Industry (CFR 1910) and Construction (CFR 1926) knowledge for the beginning safety practitioner as well as the experienced safety professional. COSS meets the requirements outlined in ANSI Z490.1 – Criteria for Accepted Practices in Safety, Health, & Environmental Training Standard.
The course consists of 40 hours of hands-on, instructor-led learning, delivered by OSHA-authorized trainers. The course is designed to equip workers with the core competencies they need to succeed in occupational safety and health.
