Charleston Update on AfricanizedBee ColonyBrad Cavin and Steve Long (Brad’s Supervisor) gave a timeline
on the discovery of the recent Africanized Bee Colony at a local beekeepers apiary. Action was taken to protect the public. The honey bee sample was sent to twodifferent bee labs (Florida & Arizona). Once the initial results came back positivethe colony was depopulated. A survey of area apiaries and trace backinvestigation (31 samples were collected) was conducted. Quarantines were issuedto area apiaries to keep them from moving the colonies. Once the morphometricanalysis came back to be European bees – NOT Africanized bees. All parties havebeen notified and all Quarantines have been lifted.

July BeekeepingHello July glad you are here. As temperaturesrise, the bees can be seen on the front entrancefanning cool air back into the hive. Water should bekept close by bees take in water to help cool thewater down. Since nectar sources are scarce rightnow, SC beekeepers, are taking honey harvest andbottling. Now is a good time to make splits and makingsure the bees are healthy. Keep a check on the weightof the hive. It is a common practice to feed 1:1 afterthe harvest. This keeps the bees from eating all theirstores. During inspections make plans to check thebrood for Varroa Mite.
