The ACT Health Promotion Grants Program

• The ACT Health Promotion Grants Program (ACTHPGP) strategic intent: Reduce overweight and obesity, contribute to ‘Zero Growth’

• It does this by providing grants to community-based organisations through Healthy Canberra Grants and the Health Promotion Innovation Fund.

Changes to the ACTHPGP: the back story

• ‘Zero Growth’ commitment – ACT Labor, Sept 2012; Labor re-elected October 2012;

• Community consultation process in early 2013; • ‘10 Point Plan’ announced by Chief Minister July

2013.• New rounds opened Sept 2013• First funding decisions Dec 2013

• The ACTHPGP will now provide two funding opportunities: Healthy Canberra Grants and the Health Promotion Innovation Fund, maintaining the overall current level of funding.

• Healthy Canberra Grants: 90% of funding, encourages larger, longer term grants.

• Health Promotion Innovation Fund:10% of funding, applications any time, funding released three times per annum.

• Next Healthy Canberra Grants opportunity – EOI expected to open late February 2014;

• Health Promotion Innovation Fund – next cut-off date 21/2/14, then late June 2014.

Funding priorities

• Improve population level outcomes around overweight and obesity.

• Improve children's health and wellbeing, in relation to overweight and obesity.

• Includes improving eating habits and increasing physical activity.

• Supporting smoking prevention, reduction and cessation.

• Supporting activities which reduce the harmful and hazardous consumption of alcohol.

• Supporting healthy active ageing through appropriate physical activity opportunities.

Healthy Canberra Grants• Will focus on the funding priorities listed.• Will account for 90% of the available

ACTHPGP budget (nearly $2m)• Applications for larger scale, multi-year

programs are encouraged.• Next opportunity: programs of up to three

years duration for implementation from July 2014.

• Application for Healthy Canberra Grants is via a two-stage process. This includes an initial Expression of Interest (EOI), next closing 3/14 (date TBA).

• Short listed proposals will be invited to submit a more detailed application.

• EOI process may also identify opportunities for collaboration and partnerships.

• Smaller value grants up to $15,000.• Single year projects.• Applications can be submitted at any time, 3

cut-off dates PA• Applications will be assessed three times per

Eligibility requirements

Applicants must meet all of the eligibility requirements:

• Organisation type specified in guidelines;• Current public liability insurance (or quote);• Deliver funded activities in the ACT;• No overdue reporting requirements;• Must be a viable legal entity/have an ABN;• May need to provide copies of recent Audited

Financial Statement.• Not eligible = application not assessed

Funding exclusions-we cannot fund:

• Applications for equipment only (nb!!);• Applications for capital works/capital

infrastructure (nb!!);• The purchase of food not associated with a

nutrition education program;• Costs which are core business of the

organisation (nb!!).• Applications that seek $ predominantly for

excluded items will not be considered

Administrative requirements: successful applicants

• Enter into a Deed of Grant (MoU for govt.)• Submit program and evaluation plans (will be

scaled according to value of the grant).• Reporting and acquittal within specified

timeframes.• Acknowledge the ACT Government for the

assistance provided for the program.
