Background
Botswana Railways (BR) is agovernment enterprise establishedthrough an act of parliament (BR Act1986; Amended in 2004)
Mandated to provide transportation ofgoods and passengers withinBotswana, efficiently, safely and cost-effectively, along sound commerciallines.
Amendment of the Act provides for BRto form Joint Ventures, Subsidiarycompanies and to exploit otherbusiness opportunities

- Over 200 billion tons coal deposits found in Botswana (at least two thirds of Africa’s coal resource)
- Project aims to link these coal deposits to South African heavy haul lines ( Limpopo Province)
- Line connects Mmamabula/Dibete in Botswana to Lephalale in South Africa
- Need to build a bridge across Limpopo River
- Feasibility study tender floating
- Gate way to South African ports for the coal market
- Shortest route for NSC if coupled with Mosetse-Kazungula line
- Employment opportunities for region.
- Alternative route into South Africa from BR line, which is a single line with a capacity of 4.5 million tons per annum.

Development Projects Ponte Techobanine Rail Line

Project Characteristics
- Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique governments intend to construct an alternative route to the deep sea port of Techobanine.
- The project is aimed at assisting Botswana to evacuate the coal resources to the port
- The missing link will take off from Selibe Phikwe in Botswana and connect to Rutenga in Zimbabwe and proceed to Techobanine through the Chicualacuala line.
- First 600 km to Rutenga is a new line while the rest of the line is an upgrade to a heavy haul line.
- The line will facilitate export of coal from Botswana
- Alternative route for Botswana on import of petroleum products
- Line forms part of the NSC if coupled with Mosetse-Kazungula rail line
Ponte Techobanine Rail Line

- Discussions between the three states are on-going

- The purpose of the facility is to undertake running maintenance, out of course repairs as well refurbishment programs for rolling stock
- The project is also aimed to help eliminate maintenance backlog
