ANNA Update—September/October 2010-Vol. 40/No. 5 11 Northeast Baltimore #101 ANNA has developed a new way for us to communicate. We have our chapter Web site, www.baltimore anna.com, which enables us to do mass mailing. The national office also has put together a way for everyone to receive an e-mail. You may have received your first such e-mail with a notification about the Fall Annual Conference in October. It will be the third Tuesday of the month instead of the second Tuesday (which we have traditionally done). We made the change because of conflicts with other meetings and to give everyone the chance to comfortably make each one. Tuesday, October 19, is the date of the conference, which will be held at the Best Western - Travel Plaza off I95. We have three simultaneous sessions planned this year: one for CNA-DTs as an update exclusively and a cannu- lation camp based on Fistula First. The Fall Audio Conference enti- tled Common Gastrointestinal Complaints from Patients with CKD will be offered at 6:30 pm on November 2. If your unit would like to host the event, please contact any of the officers (see our Web site) and we will be delighted to arrange this. Lastly, the chapter executive board would love to hear from you. Elections are coming soon so please consider adding this title to your résumé. The team will gladly discuss how. Colonial #103 The Colonial and Mass Bay Chapters co-hosted our annual meet- ing at the Mohegan Sun Casino in May. The event was a great success with 163 participants from 6 states. Please save May 19, 2011, for our 2011 Annual Meeting to be held at the Mohegan Sun Cabaret. The chapter awarded its first $1,000 scholarship to a member who was furthering her education in nephrology. Congratulation to Mae Joy Falk! We will be sponsoring 2 more scholarships next year. Check out our Web site for details at www.colonialchapter103.com. Three Rivers #104 We began our spring with a Recognition Breakfast held at Sheraton Station Square in the heart of Pittsburgh. Our chapter is proud to recognize the certified PCTs as a vital part of our dialysis team. Congratulations to all who have worked diligently and have taken this important step to become certified. The speaker, Dr. Walid Kassir, was sponsored by Genzyme. Another meeting was held in May at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. An inservice titled PD Training for CHP Floor Nurse focused on monitoring dialysis patients on the home choice cycler machine at night. A combination of pizza and good learning was had by all who attended. We meet the first Thursday of every month. Our wish is that if you’re reading this article in the update then you need to join us. We could use you! Our goal for this year is to capture and put to use a handful of new members. We need your input and your talents. Your should have been with us during the last week in July when we spent a few days in the beautiful green mountains of Ligonier at “Kidney Kamp.” Bob Kraynik of DCI Dialysis is the lead person for this event. Every year children affected in some way by renal disease are offered a week at camp to spend time away from their normal lives and have fun along with children with similar health problems. The kids swim, climb stone walls, soar high above the trees, and just dance. It gives me pleasure just watching them. Words can’t express the fun Susan Carter, Nina Parrish, and Diane Dering had at this year’s camp. Special thanks to Patti McCarney who gave the wooden picture frames to each camper. Stacy Fisher made treat bags that were a hit with the kids. Plans are already being organized to lengthen our time at camp by another day. How could we not when you hear from the kids say “thank you and please come back next year!” Why not join us? There is always room for one more. The Renal Round Table is sched- uled for September 19. Join us for a weekend at Seven Springs. Keystone #110 Chapter officers hope all mem- bers had a wonderful summer! Now that we are back in “back to school” mode, we would like to announce the topics for our Fall Symposium to be held November 5 at the Crown Plaza on Street Road in Bensalem. Co-chairs Nida Quirong-Jones and Cathy Gallagher are pleased with the new format allowing PCTs and RNs their own breakout sessions mid sympo- sium. Topics for all include: CKD Life Plan, Compassionate Care, Infections in Dialysis Setting, and Vascular Access Interventions. RN topics are PD in the Home and Pain Management in CKD. PCTs will learn Who Is a Candidate for Home Dialysis and Assessments for PCT. We hope to see you there! Thanks to Michelle Gregg and the American Access Care Center for offering Advanced Vascular Interventions by Dr. Louis Domenico on June 17 at their South Chapter Update The Colonial and Mass Bay Chapters co-hosted their annual meeting at the Mohegan Sun Casino. The meeting featured excellent speakers and vendor displays, including this one from the National Kidney Foundation of Connecticut.

Now is the time to start thinkingof the upcoming elections. Are youready to be an officer? Being a chapterofficer is a rewarding experience. Thepeople you meet at the national lead-ership workshop and the training thatis provided prepares you well foryour new role. The chapter has hadthe ability to send all our officers tothe workshop and the chapter hasbeen able to absorb the cost. I can sayfrom my own experience that I havegrown both professionally and per-sonally since becoming a chapter offi-cer. I was skeptical at first, but mymentor, Emily Arnold, made it all soeasy during the transition.

During KDAE Week and theweeks following the chapter pursueda strong campaign to help our state, local, and federal officials understandjust what we do and the effects thatlegislation has on our patients.
