1 ProgramIntroduction
1.1 ProgramDescription
Radiographyisanalliedhealthprofessionthatinvolvesimagingoftheformandfunctionofhumananatomyusingionizingradiationforthepurposeofdiagnosingand/ortreatingpathologicalconditions.
TheProgramofferedbytheUPEISchoolofRadiographypreparesstudentsforentryintothiseverevolvingprofession.StudentswillachieveclinicalproficiencyinallaspectsofRadiographyandwillattainallcompetenciesasdetailedintheCanadianAssociationofMedicalRadiationTechnologists(CAMRT)Competencyprofile.Thisprofile,developedbytheCAMRT,providestheprogramwiththeframeworkforitscurriculum.UponsuccessfulcompletionofthenationalcertificationexamthegraduatewillbecomeaRegisteredTechnologistinRadiography(RTR)andiseligibletopracticeinmostCanadianprovinces.
TheUPEISchoolofRadiographyoffersafouryearintegratedDegreeprogramwithstudentscompletingbothhospital-basedcourses(designatedasQEHinallProgramliterature)anduniversity-basedcoursesattheUniversityofPrinceEdwardIsland(UPEI).
UponcompletionofallProgramrequirements,studentsareeligibletowritetheCAMRTcertificationexamThisexamisdevelopedandadministratedthroughtheCAMRT;passingthisexamisarequirementforemploymentonPEIandinmostotherprovinceswithinCanada.

1.3 RadiographyasaProfession
Therewardsofthisprofessionaregreatbuttherearebothphysicalandpsychologicaldemandsofwhichstudentsshouldbeaware.Theseincludetheabilitytobeonone’sfeetforprolongedperiodsandtheabilitytoenduresustainedphysicalactivitysuchasliftingandpositioningpatients.Thestudentmusthavesufficientvisualacuitytoperformalltherequiredtaskssuchasimagereviewandassessment.
Thereisalsosomerisktostudentsduetoexposuretoionizingradiation,disease,bodilyfluids,andmusculoskeletalinjury.Somestudentsmayalsofindthattheemotionalandpsychologicaldemandsoftheprofessionhaveadetrimentaleffectontheirwellbeing.Thesedemandsmayincludebeinginvolvedinstressfultraumascenariosorinthemorguesetting.Somestudentsarenotwellequippedtodealwiththesightofsevereinjuryandbloodlosssotheschoolrecommendsthatprospectivestudentsconsider“jobshadowing”priortoapplying.

Duringsimulationstudentswillpracticeradiographicpositioningontheirclassmates.
2.10 AccesstoFacilities• StudentsmayhaveaccesstoclassroomslocatedatHillsboroughHospitalduringweekends,
eveningsandholidays.AccesstoInstructors’officesafterhoursisnotpermitted.• RadiographystudentshavefullaccesstoallUPEIfacilitiessuchasthegym,library,healthcenter,
etc.• Accesstoradiographicexamroomsisonlypermittedunderdirectsupervisionofaprogram

2.13 RequestforDeferment• TheUPEISchoolofRadiographyProgramisdesignedforstudentstocompletewithinthe

• Thesequencingofcoursesandintegrationofclinicalpracticewithdidacticlearningaimstoallowstudentstobuilduponpreviouslearningandexperienceastheyprogressfromyeartoyear.
• AfterbeginningthePrograminSeptemberofsecondyear,studentsneverspendmorethan14weeksawayfromtheclinicalenvironment.
• ItisstronglyrecommendedthatstudentscompletetheProgramasitwasdesigned;defermentisnotencouraged.
• Defermentwillbeconsidereduponrequestbutisnotguaranteed.ConsenttodefercompletionoftheProgramwillbedependentuponmanyfactors,includingbutnotlimitedto:

4 Clinical
4.1 IntroductiontoClinicalPractica� Theclinicalcomponentof theradiographyprogramgivesthestudentachanceto implement
the knowledge attained in the didactic setting. It is incumbent upon the student to availthemselvesofeveryopportunitytoobserveorperformacasetoensurethattheybecomethebestradiographerpossible.
� Studentsbeginclinicalpracticeimmediately(weekafterprogramorientation)andthroughouttheprogramcompletetheequivalentof43-44weeksofclinical
� The student will initially be subject to direct supervision and later, as skills aremore highlydeveloped they will require only indirect supervision (See 4.7). Progression from direct toindirectsupervisionwillbeatthediscretionoftheclinicalcoordinator.

Purpose:Toidentifystudentswhorequireclinicalremediationandtoensureafair,transparentremediationprocess
Procedure:
1. Anystudentwhoattemptsaclinicalcompetencyevaluation,andremains“inprogress”willbeofferedremediation
a. ClinicalInstructorwillmeetwithstudenttoreviewtheevaluationanddiscussareasforimprovement
b. Thestudentmustperformatleastonemorecaseoftheimagingprocedurethatwasattemptedwithdirectsupervisionbeforeattemptingasubsequentevaluation
c. Ifastudentalsodoesnotcompletethesubsequentevaluation,theClinicalInstructorwillmeetwithstudenttoformalearningplan
2. Ifanystudentrequiresremediationformorethanoneclinicalcompetency,programfacultywillmeetwiththestudenttodiscusshowtheProgramcanassistthestudentincludingbutnotlimitedto:
a. Assiststudentinarrangingadditionalclinicalhoursb. Arrangeforstudenttomeetoneononewitheachappropriatefacultymemberand/or
preceptor

AssessmentofClinicalCompetency
Purpose:Toensureafair,transparent,andeffectiveprocessfordeterminingstudents’clinicalcompetenceandtoensurestudentsareinformedofthisprocess.
Procedure:
1.Inordertosuccessfullycompletetheclinicalassessmentprocess,thestudentmustdemonstratecompetencybymeetingallclinicalassessmentrequirementswhichareasfollows:
a.Completionofatotalof35clinicalcompetencyevaluationformsforimagingprocedures;theseevaluationsareindicatedbyacompetencychecklistwhichispostedateachclinicalsite,aswellasineachstudent’sfile.Thestudentmustperformthreecaseswithdirectsupervisionbeforeattemptingaclinicalcompetencyevaluationonthatparticularimagingprocedure.
b.Completionofaclinicalcompetencyequipmentchecklist;thischecklistensuresthateverystudentdemonstratesknowledgeandoperationofvariousimagingsystems,aswellasqualitycontrolprocedures
c.Completionofaprofessionalpracticeassessmentform;thisassessmentisconductedattheendofeachspring/summerclinicalpracticumtoensurestudentprogresswithprofessionalpractice
d.Completionofaprofessionalbehaviorassessmentform;thisformissenttoapreceptortocompleteforeachstudentinvariousclinicalrotations,andateachoftheProgram’sclinicalsites
e.Completionofacompetencysimulationchecklist;tomeetallcompetencieswhichareunabletobemetintheclinicalenvironment
f.CompletionofaClinicalExperienceBooklet;thisbookletistokeeparecordofthevariousimagingproceduresthestudentperformsthroughoutthedurationoftheprogram
2.Thestudentwillattempttoreachtherecommendedtargetforcompletionofclinicalcompetencies,howeverifthetargetisnotmetthestudentwilldiscussaplanofactionwiththeclinicalcoordinator.
