Had a close friend stopped me seven years ago to tell me that I would stick to one project for the next seven years, I would have laughed at him. In fact, I believe one of my closest friends, Jason Halley, secretly did when I told him that I was thinking about starting a magazine nearly eight years ago. To his credit, had it not been for the amazing people involved in the production of Upgraded Living, he would have probably been right. This issue is our 85th and somehow, through the grace and patience of everyone involved, it hasn’t missed a single beat over those seven years.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned through those seven years and these eighty-five issues, it’s that passion trumps everything. If you’re passionate about what you do, the joy of doing it will trump the normal rewards that compel most to do what they do, and in the end, it will return those rewards to you all the same. It has been the driving force in everything we have done in the magazine over the past seven years and the team that puts the magazine together continues to prove their passionate for promoting positivity in our community.

This 85th issue was not only celebratory for us, but for many others in the community, including the good folks at the North Valley Community Foundation who embody my above statement, that passion trumps everything. Day-in and day-out, these wonderful people pour their hearts and souls into raising money for those in need, and the benefit of their work is visibly mon-umental. During the past nine years, their organization has raised over $40 million for various causes and charities throughout Northern California and assisted hundreds of nonprofits in not only raising money to support their benefactors, but to build lasting brands as well that will allow them to con-tinue benefiting the community for many years to come. Truly, there are few so deserving of praise as they, and we are honored to share their story and the stories of thirty-six of their partners in this issue.

This is also our fall fashion issue, and we are excited to present the new-est looks alongside our friends at Kirsh-ner Wildlife Sanctuary. These exquisite people work tirelessly to provide a nur-turing home for so many animals that have been abused and neglected, and do so solely out of the goodness of their hearts. Their work is a testament to true to selflessness and we couldn’t be more thankful for their support.

As always, thank you for your con-tinued readership; go out, do good, and we hope you love this issue as much as we do!

When it comes to local heroes, there are few names that stand out quite like Annie Bidwell. Born in 1839, An-nie moved to Chico after marrying General John Bid-well in 1868. Regarded by many as the mother of Chi-

co, Annie lived up to her name time and again by championing various social and moral causes, building a sound community, and promoting the general welfare of those who resided in her adopted hometown. Particularly worthy of note, Annie played a key role in women’s suf-frage, the temperance movement, and the promotion of the importance of education in our area. It is no surprise that Annie is also considered one of the greatest philanthropists our area has ever known. Among her many gifts to the region, she is also responsible for the creation and willing of 2,238 acres that are now called Bidwell Park.

It is in this same spirit of stewardship and philanthropy that the North Valley Community Foundation (NVCF) was formed. During its 25 years of service, the Foundation has served thousands of individu-als, families, businesses, nonprofits and agencies in their philanthropic pursuits. There is, perhaps, no greater illustration of NVCF’s tremen-dous impact than that of their grant program, named to honor Annie Bidwell — the Annie B’s Community Drive.

Created in 2007, with the seed money and idea from two local anon-ymous donors, it would have been difficult to predict the kind of suc-cess Annie B’s has seen. In seven years, Annie B’s has generated more than $7 million for nonprofits and charitable causes — here and around the globe. It quickly became the largest discretionary grant program in the region.

NVCF has demonstrated the power of an entire region coming to-gether to make a difference. By creating a percentage grant pool (that adds money to every donation made during the Drive), Annie B’s en-courages donors to maximize their investments while engaging in a region-wide initiative. The grant program supports charitable causes across the board – from public safety to education, and the environ-ment to services for older adults.

Alexa Benson-Valavanis, President and CEO of the North Valley Community Foundation, is the living embodiment of Annie’s lega-cy for our region. During her nine years at the helm, the Community

Foundation has raised more than $40 million for charitable causes. As she puts it, “Philanthropy is one of the most powerful ways we can align our resources with our values. With each dollar we donate we are making a statement about who we are, what we care about, and the change we wish to see in the world. Annie B’s maximizes this engage-ment by lifting up charitable causes and donors alongside one another, with the unique incentive of adding a percentage grant to each donation made. We are proud to have created Annie B’s, if for no other reason than to remind us, that we — as a community, as a region, and as a people, are truly capable of solving the challenges we face – if we do it together!” We couldn’t agree with her more.

From August 1st through September 30th (ending at 5pm), all gifts made to Annie B’s participating charities will receive a percentage grant from NVCF. Typically, this grant is between 8-10%. A number of notable and worthy brands are represented by this drive, and we’re excited to present information on 36 of these Annie B’s participants in the immediate pages to follow. We hope you take the time to read through these mini-profiles and discover more about what these incred-ible organizations are doing within our community. Please remember that all donations made to these charities until September 30th must be made through NVCF’s Annie B’s website to qualify for the 8-10% grant addition.

For a complete list of Annie B’s participants, or to make an online donation, please visit www.nvcf.org/donate. To make a gift by check, simply mail it to NVCF at 3120 Cohasset Rd. Ste. 8, Chico CA 95973. Make sure to include the participating charity’s name on the “payable to” line (i.e. Annie B’s/My Favorite Charity).

“Comfort neverlooked so good.”

Inspired by his grandfather, his passion for golf began at an early age.

BY ANNABELLE STEIN / PHOTOS BY MICHELLE CAMY

On my first day of kindergarten, I met a boy named Noah Norton. He had a passion for golf and I had a passion for dance. Fast forward 10 years –

Noah is still golfing, I am still dancing, and we are still great friends. Here’s the thing about passion: when you find something you love to do, nothing can stand in your way.

Noah’s passion for golf began at an ear-ly age. He was inspired by his grandfather. When he was just five years old his grandfa-ther taught him how to golf, and he has been golfing for ten years-and counting. Noah began to play competitively in tournaments when he was about eight. During the sum-mer, golf tournaments generally occur once a week, and are week-long tournaments. He competes all over California and beyond, sometimes going as far as British Columbia. Even for such a young athlete, Noah doesn’t let the travel or intensity of the sport get to him. He is very relaxed and states, “I never get nervous before a tournament and don’t feel any pressure.” His favorite golf course is Pasatiempo in Santa Cruz which he loves because “it has an awesome design.”

On top of making Chico history for being

the youngest city golf champ, Noah is ranked 12th for his division in California. He is also sponsored by Titleist. They began sponsor-ing him last fall; Titleist saw him play at a tournament, noticed that Noah certainly had potential, and contacted him soon after.

Noah’s perfect day of golf would be to drive to Santa Cruz to play at the Pasatiempo course with Tiger Woods, grab a quick bite to eat at In-N-Out and then spend the night at the Hyatt Regency in Monterey. Of course with all that, he’d try to beat his personal record of 66. Achieving a personal record of 66 doesn’t happen without dedication and hours of practice. Noah practices golf every day. During the week, he golfs about three hours each day, and during the weekend he golfs about six to eight hours each day.

Noah’s plan for the future is to play golf professionally. If you are a golfer, Noah’s advice is “Don’t let bad shots bother you and always have fun.” With the help of 50 golf shirts, 27 hours of golf weekly and a handi-cap of +2, I believe Noah has the potential to achieve his dreams.

Under the Friday night lights, two cross-town rivalries will face one another helmet to helmet. Red vs. Blue. Panthers vs. Vikings. Chico vs. Pleasant Valley. The high school football game is always of epic proportion in school spirit and team morale. As posters are waved and feet are stomped, there is a definite sense of competition between the schools. However, there is one thing that brings both student bodies together. Half-time and the Chico Nissan Hyundai spon-sored car giveaway.

For the past five years, Chico Nissan Hyundai has been the event’s main sponsor and our local high schools’ sports program key philanthropist. Over the last four years, the car raffle has raised over $500,000 for local schools. The competition between schools goes far beyond the field. Each team will benefit from the amount of tickets they sell, meaning that the car giveaway is a ma-jor source of funds for all athletic programs.

If you’ve ever attended the Almond Bowl you may know the half-time scene well. The players rehydrate with Gatorade and re-strategize their efforts. Spectators in the crowd re-adjust their thick blankets and get snacks. Alumni’s Varsity jackets with vintage patches are shown off and stories from when they remember running onto the field them-selves are told. Cheerleaders and bands perform, then finally somebody taps on a microphone in preparation of the announce-ment many came for. Of the many tickets sold, one person will drive out of the Univer-

sity Stadium with a brand new 2014 Nissan Sentra. Everyone holds their breath as one ticket number is called. If it’s yours, there is obvious thrill and initial shock. Even if it’s not, you can’t help but smile for the person who did win, knowing how happy it will make them and you grin again because you know that the ticket you bought went to a great cause helping benefit students.

Raffle tickets can be purchased from student athletes and parents and will be available at Chico Nissan (575 Manzanita Avenue in Chico). Supporters can also find student athletes selling tickets at Round Ta-ble Pizza locations on selected nights. Fans can purchase as many tickets as they would like and are not required to be present at the football game to win. In addition, license and sales tax will generously be covered by CHS / PVHS Sports Boosters. Brian Bowen, owner of Chico Nissan Hyundai says, “Chico Nissan Hyundai has been part of this com-munity for more than 50 years and it has al-ways been a priority of ours to give back to the community.” They do that and more ev-ery year for our community. We urge you buy a raffle ticket, grab a hot drink and bundle up for a great football game October 24th. You never know, you might be the one this year excitedly gripping a brand new wheel with images of red and blue jerseys flashing in your mind, as you leave the parking lot. Almond Bowl and the Chico Nissan Hyundai Car Giveaway is a night you don’t want to miss.

AVOIDING TRAUMATIC INJURY: Tips from a Flight Care Nurse

Enloe Medical Center sees the most critically injured patients in this part of Northern Califor-nia. While helping these patients recover is incredibly rewarding, the ultimate reward is prevent-ing traumatic injuries in the first place.

Most of the trauma patients here – about 70 percent – are male. Nationally, trauma is the leading cause of death for people ages 1-44, according to the Center for Disease Control.

Most injuries may not have been intentional, but they may have been preventable. Here are ways you can help to prevent a trauma from happening to you or some-one else:

PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR SURROUNDINGS.Situational awareness is important. Pay attention when you are driving. Don’t assume other people see you on your bicycle or when you are crossing the street. Don’t wear dark clothing and ride your bike down the Skyway at night and expect to come out unscathed.

ALWAYS WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT. It’s absolutely imperative. We see severe injuries, including major crush injuries and amputations as a result of people getting partial-ly or fully ejected from vehicles. Many people still believe urban legends about being thrown to safety after a crash because of not wearing a seat belt. Wear your seat belt, I’m begging you.

WEAR APPROPRIATE SAFETY EQUIPMENT. It’s vital to wear the right safety gear when engaged in sports. Some people feel their experience (on a horse, ATV, driving, etc.) will keep them safe. Unfortunately, this perception isn’t always reality and can lead to a visit to the trau-ma center. The best-fitting and highest-tech equipment can pro-vide protection only if it’s worn. The same goes for industrial and agricultural workers, who might be at higher risk for injury during peak seasons.

USE CAUTION ENTERING WATER. Water levels can change. What may have been deep two weeks ago may now be quite shallow. Often you cannot really see what’s under the water, especial-ly in creeks and lakes. There are

sharp rocks, and sometimes bro-ken glass or tree snags. Even if you know the area well, always check before jumping in and never dive. People sometimes simply underes-timate the power of water — espe-cially when intoxicated.

BE SMART AROUND TOWN. Often in the fall when the students return we see an increase in auto accidents involving bicyclists and pedestrians. Additionally, many injuries can be caused by the ac-tions of other people. Don’t as-sume everyone else is sober. Don’t pick a fight outside a bar. We are seeing more penetrating trauma (stabbings, gunshot wounds, crim-inal violence) unfortunately.

You can truly see someone’s passion for something when they choose to work hard and give their all to a cause without money being the ultimate goal. For Amy Lacey, see-ing results in the mood and body of those she helps is enough. Each time I talk with Amy, she is excited to share her clients’ progress with me. She is flooded with inspiration and hope to gain people’s health back, and of course, impressive before and after photos. Although she tells me all the time that she doesn’t run her program for the money, but for health, it truly goes without saying. The joy she shares in seeing progress in her clients is conta-gious--motivating, even.

The program, Live the Lifestyle has two components to it-- a whole foods program and the Take Shape For Life program, both of which she has sponsored people in and had huge successes with. Beginning with herself and her husband, Amy has experienced her own journey through weight-loss and posi-tive lifestyle adjustment and is able to relate directly to her clients’ struggles and success-es. While she is excited to be expanding her program, even becoming In Motion Fitness’ onsite nutrition program coordinator, she stays true to her roots and her reason: To help people.

“In the last year, we have sponsored 15 people to help them gain optimal health,” Amy says proudly. These sponsored clients receive coaching and meal planning from Amy’s Live the Lifestyle program while Amy absorbs the costs. “I like the charity of it be-cause I know I am giving, and I can physically see where my money and time is going.” Most of these sponsored clients have been obese teenagers, single moms and teachers. In this busy world, many of us are too stressed and rushed, and we let our health and nutrition fall to the bottom of our list of priorities. Ac-cording to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity has more than dou-bled in children and quadrupled in adoles-cents in the past 30 years. As for adults, more than one third (78.6 million) of U.S. adults are obese. Along with the physical health prob-

lems that come along with obesity is a whole list of mental health threats. Poor self-esteem and depression are not only side-effects of obesity, but they can perpetuate the problem as well. In reverse, getting healthy and fit can elevate mood and self-esteem, helping to cre-ate a physically and mentally healthy, happy person. Amy loves sponsoring and coaching people through this journey.

From teens who were raised with grab-n-go eating habits to teachers and busy moms who spend all their time and energy on their students or children, leaving nothing for them-selves, Amy has been there to give a little ex-tra care and help. Their stories are inspiring.

DIANE Weight loss: 119 Pounds

Diane started the program last October. As a busy mom of three who volunteers at the school and helps with her family’s busi-

ness, she was too busy taking care of others and left no time for herself. After significant weight gain, she decided it was time to make a change. Since starting the program she has made optimal health a priority. Amy sponsored her for a short 3 months and when Diane saw the endless benefits and success she was having with the program, she made the commitment to moving forward with Take Shape for Life on her own. Since last Octo-ber she has made many changes in her daily life. Amy proudly states, “She walks at least 15,000 steps a day, she rarely eats out and never gets fast food. She has even learned to cook and eat fish--a first for her.” Diane is spreading her newfound love for a healthy lifestyle throughout the community. “She has been such an inspiration to people around town. Since her weight loss, at least ten people have started the journey with similar goals. I love to hear her speak and give ad-vice and recipes.” Amy adds, “Now Diane is in a size 6, and her daughter makes cute com-

ments like ‘Mom, my arms wrap easily around you when I hug you!’” As Diane progresses, she is able to try on her wedding dress and see a true difference in the way it fits her new body.

TYLER Weight loss: 52 Pounds

PV graduate, Tyler started his journey this last year before graduation with a dream to play football. He needed to lose 50 pounds to be eligible to play. With Life the Lifestyle, he lost the weight and since has decided he wants to continue his weight loss and get down to 230 pounds--he has about another 70 pounds to go. Tyler says he “feel[s] best while doing the program.” He wants to speak at schools about obesity and what it means to gain optimal health.

Amy remembers, “Once he lost his initial goal of 50 pounds, he quit the program and started his own diet and workout routine, but he felt terrible and came back to me wanting to continue his journey on this program and eventually help people.”

WHITNEY Weight loss: 40 Pounds

Three years ago, Whitney was 145 pounds, engaged to be married, had a degree to teach children and a love-filled life. A few weeks before their wedding date, her fiancé left her with a mound of financial debt along with unopened wedding gifts and a beautiful dress never to be worn. Whitney, depressed by the turn of events, started to gain a lot of weight--almost 100 pounds. Without even knowing anyone here, Whitney came to Chi-co from southern California to start a new life and landed her dream job teaching 4th and 5th graders. Whitney started to pay off the debt her fiancé left her with, but she still need-ed to lose the weight she had gained in the aftermath of the event. Amy is thrilled by her progress, “She started our program in June and has lost 35 pounds as of August 10th. Once this article is published, she will be well into losing 40 plus pounds with a goal to lose 80 pounds by Christmas!”

From helping bullied teens gain the con-fidence they need to succeed in school to giving stressed out moms a sense of control to aiding diabetics and others with weight-re-lated medical problems reduce or even get off their meds, the success stories that come out of Take Shape for Life are endlessly up-lifting. “Our focus with Take Shape for Life is to achieve optimal health with healthy mind, healthy body and healthy finances.” Says Amy, “We have the program in three medical clinics and are helping with In Motion Fitness’ nutrition program. We have healthy happy

hours, talks on optimal health, and soon will be offering talks on The War on Debt.” With a bio-network of physicians, nurses and reg-istered dietitians, and coaches who have worked the program themselves, the support system provided by Take Shape for Life is un-beatable.

It is not uncommon for people to be con-fused over what assisted living is. There is a popular belief that assisted living is where old people go to live out their lives in seclusion, eating bad food, surrounded by bad smells. Families express guilt over exploring the option of assisted living be-cause their loved ones have drilled into them the message, “I’d rather die than get left one of those places.” Sad images of “old folks homes” are burned into our collective conscience preventing many people from even walking through the door to see what actually goes on inside.

The truth is, most assisted living commu-nities are full of life and activity. Assisted living creates a place for those who are isolated and alone to truly LIVE out the last chapter of their lives instead of strug-gling daily to get by.

Following a social model, assisted living does not provide health care. Its focus instead is on enhancing the quality of life for its elderly residents by helping them successfully perform regular daily activ-ities. Assisted living is meant to emulate a home environment while releasing the individual from the concerns that come with maintaining a home. It provides safety and security to its residents while focusing on maintaining independence and dignity. Each day has opportunities for life enrichment through exercise, ac-tivities, and social gatherings. Many, but not all assisted living facilities provide memory care for residents stricken with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, all in familiar, home-like surroundings.

If you have questions about assisted liv-ing services, please give us a call at (530) 566-1800.

From Steve L. - My in-laws are pulling money from their stocks. They are under the assumption they will be taxed when the stocks are cashed out (sold) and when it is time to do income tax next year. I think income can only be taxed once. Any insight?

Stocks can be held in both retirement (pre-tax) and non-retirement (after-tax) accounts. Taxation is different for each. If your in-laws are taking withdrawals from an IRA or other retirement plan that was funded with pre-tax dollars, any withdrawals taken from the ac-count are taxed as ordinary income. If stocks are sold within the account but no money is withdrawn, then there is no taxable event.

After-tax accounts (i.e. trusts, indi-vidual, community property) are differ-ent. Any money made in an after-tax account needs to be reported for tax purposes. There are two potential ways to make money (and therefore incur

taxes) with stocks–-capital gains and dividends.

1. When your in-laws sell their stock it will generate either a capital gain or loss. The gain or loss is calculated by subtracting the original purchase price (known as cost-basis) from the current sale price.

2. Dividends received are reported to the IRS and taxed the year they are received.

Fortunately for investors, long-term capital gains (gains are considered long-term when the stock that was sold was held for more than one year) and dividends receive preferential tax treatment. Depending on the investor’s Adjusted Gross Income, dividends and capital gains are taxed at a minimum of 0% or a maximum of 20% (plus a 3.8% Medicare tax if they qualify).

Tax laws change often. We do not

Money Q&Aoffer or solicit tax advice. We do work closely with our client’s tax advisors to make sure our clients understand and minimize the taxation of their invest-ments as they work towards their finan-cial goals.

BEAUTYQ & A

Q: What is the difference between gel, acrylics, and shellac nail polishes? I know that these are all meant to last longer than traditional polish, but what are the benefits of each?

A: Acrylic nails have been one of the most popular nail enhancements for years. Acryl-ic powder and monomer are applied over a plastic nail tip or form to create a desired nail length and shape. Acrylics require some filing of the natural nail bed and can be removed by soaking in acetone or drill-ing. Acrylic is a good choice for you if you are looking for nail strength or length.

Gel is applied in a similar fashion, but is a softer more natural feeling nail enhance-ment. This product is premixed and laid over a tip or form and is cured in a UV light. Drilling is required to properly remove them

The new innovation in nail care is gel pol-ish or shellac which is a hybrid between gel and regular polish. It has shown not to chip for up to two weeks. Gel polish or shellac can be placed over natural nails or acrylics. Gel polish is a great choice for anyone look-ing for a long-lasting product that is gentle to remove and change.

Q: I feel like I’m shaving constantly during these summer months, is shaving every day bad for my skin? How can I get a closer shave that lasts longer?

A: The shaving battle begins under the skin, where the root and follicle go through a 3 stage life cycle of growth, death and rest. Sun exposure feeds the skin with vita-min D and boosts the 6 week growth phase of our hair. To combat this growth and main-tain healthy skin, it is recommended to fol-low these three tips:

1: Exfoliate your skin with a gentle scrub before and after shaving. This clears pores of dirt, oil and product, allowing for a clos-er shave and reducing the development of razor bumps.

2: Use a well conditioned shaving cream that will help soften the hair and keep the razor from dragging and pulling. Shave against the hair growth for a closer cut.

3: Finish each shave with a rinse of cool wa-ter and pat dry to close pores. Then apply a soy based moisturizer. Studies have shown soy to help shrink or inhibit the growth of hair and will nourish the exfoliated skin.

If your new hair growth still comes back too quickly, consider alternating shaving with a hair removal method that eliminates hair at the root (waxing, laser, depilatory cream). These will help you achieve 4-6 weeks of smooth, healthy skin.

Q: I can’t seem to stay up on hair trends this year! What kinds of colors and styles are trending for fall?

A: Fall is all about warming up your color! Choose golden or red tones that add rich-ness to any shade from blonde to darkest brown. Spice it up with a few subtle balay-age or ombré highlights and a well coiffed braid and you will be on point this fall sea-son.

Tucked around a shady corner on Mangrove and East Lindo sits a quaint little place to relax and get beautified. Chandeliers sparkle above the work stations and prints with words of self-love adorn the walls. Pastel butterfly ornaments ascend the walls, encouraging the

metamorphosis of beauty. Audrey Hepburn’s famous words of advice hang above the reception table, “For attractive lips, speak words of kindness. For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people. For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry. For beautiful hair, let a child run their fingers through it. For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone.”

Natalie Carmichael is the proud owner and dream-er behind the concept of My Salon. “It’s called ‘My Salon’ because I want it to belong to everybody,” says Natalie. “Be yourself. Feel at home. This is your spot.”

My Salon is just as much Natalie’s peaceful style sanctuary as it is for her clients. She has worked through personal and professional challenges to make her way to the top of her game, and now she is eager to share her success and love for what she does with everyone who enters her life. “I was de-termined to succeed and beyond hungry for my in-

My Salon: dependence,” she explains, “When I started, I was financially dependent, had low self esteem, and through my work I became stronger and more confi-dent. It’s been a long road, but now I feel like I have completely bloomed. For the first time in my life I truly love myself.” Natalie can truly see people’s in-ner beauty and and doesn’t want anyone to fall under the negativity the world can sometimes bestow upon a person. “I believe that when we are born into this world, we are all 100% perfect. Then over the course of our lives, the world breaks us down little by little and before we know it we call ourselves names, lose love for ourselves, put ourselves in toxic relation-ships, etc. I have so much love in me to give, I want to fill everyone up until they overflow with love.”

Seven years ago, Natalie earned her cosmetology license from Chico Beauty College and after work-ing at Giada, Che Divina and Perfect Tan, she finally found what she was looking for at Body Escentials. “Kim at Body Escentials took a chance and let me work. I really liked the ladies here. They’re real, sol-id women. They love what they do and they do it without one ounce of drama.” So when Natalie was able to purchase the salon, that’s just what she did. She kept everyone on staff and is giving the salon a much-needed makeover.

Waxing, lashes, facials, and all things hair are available from an experienced blend of stylists, each with her own expertise. To top it all off, you’ll nev-er end your visit with the awkward product pushing that has become prevalent in so many salons today. “I don’t want to be forced to sell and push products on clients,” says Natalie. “We are not a money-fo-cused, brand-pushing salon. I am more of a mini-malist hair stylist. Less is more. When I bought the salon I asked all the girls for their top five favorite products and those are the ones we carry. What I love most about what I do is helping people see their true beauty. It’s crazy how life-changing something so simple as a haircut can be. I don’t want to lose focus of that by worrying about carrying an exclusive line of products. Our focus is people--care for them, love them, and treat them like family.”

Roxy, the salon dog keeps things sassy in her rhinestone collar and complimentary craft beer, wine and Champagne add to the sensory experience of the salon. Natalie’s passion for her work, her colleagues and her clients is apparent throughout My Salon and her energy and chic taste are enticing. Above all, her hard work and appreciation for all that she has en-dured and earned are what drive her to continue in her quest to beautify-- mind, body, spirit and hair!

“When I truly sit down and think about my life and what I do, it brings me to tears...I am so thankful to God that He put me where I need to be. I have so much gratitude. I’m so blessed to be able to help people the way that I do...And I work so freakin’ hard!”

To book an appointment with Natalie, or any of the stylists at My Salon, call (530) 899-6999. For more information and reviews, find My Salon on Facebook and Yelp, or stop by the salon at 1834 Mangrove Ave, Suite 40 in Chico.

Even with a century of modern city planning and architecture, Chico will always remain the perfect contrast of old and new. The rare and beautiful aes-thetics of what our town once was (and still is) can be seen from every intersection and sidewalk. Oro-ville E. Tracy, a man whose vision was instrumental in making Chico and Butte County grow and blos-som into what is today, began to build a collection of houses known as Storybook Homes from 1925 to 1929. Originally, the homes sold for $4,500-6,500, lots included. Eastwood Park, a neighborhood lo-cated within the boundaries of 8th Street, Eastwood Ave, Poplar Street and Pine Street, became the sub-division for these “Homes of the Moment.”

Chico, in the 1920’s, began to grow rapidly both in home expansion and business interest. Tracy greatly contributed to the growth, building the Storybook subdivision when everything began to boom. “You will find a homey atmosphere and an air of charm and contentment in Eastwood Park, and a home in this beautiful tract will mean many years of pleasure that you will never experience until you own your own home.” A few tactful marketing words Tracy and his associates used in a brochure dated back to 1929 and these elegant, quaint and artistic qualities still surround the Storybook homes today as cars fly by on Highway 32. The homes were avail-able in many different options, ranging from price and layout, varying from Spanish, French and En-glish architectural designs.

Although very compact, they offered a tremen-dous amount of space with multiple bedrooms and bathrooms. Breakfast alcoves and nooks, large din-ing rooms surrounded by spacious terraces were some of outstanding trademarks of the Storybook collection. One of the most attractive features found in the English and French designs is the prominent turret located at the front of the house, making the structure completely different from anything Chico had ever seen. Tracy made sure the homebuyer had every option available to make the house as welcoming as possible. And, as a generous house-warming gift, he also included tournament size, hand carved slate pool tables with every Storybook purchase.

By 1929, all but two of the Storybook homes were sold. The popularity of Eastwood Park became very well known, putting Chico on the map as a note-worthy Northern California community and, even more importantly, it was a rising of the bar on how to build homes which would lead to future housing innovations. The various Storybook models can be seen throughout east 8th and 9th streets, so be sure to slow down and look around next time you’re rac-ing to Highway 99 because a big piece local history can be glimpsed simply by looking out your window.

New Again Kitchen & Bath Presents

House CallThe Call

September 2014:A Kitchen That Sparkles

Happy, sparkly 47th anniversary to an adorable couple!

Love, New Again Kitchen & Bath and Upgraded Living.

The Call

The CoupleJohn and Greta Souza met in San Francisco at a bar on Lombard street in the ‘60s. Now coming up on their 47th anniversary, they share a red and gold “because we love the 49ers!” home in Chico, full of interesting knick-knacks, family photos and their lov-ing golden retriever. Spunky, cheerful Greta is full of life and John loves that about her. With their children having children, their family continues to grow, and the couple loves hosting. Their 1985 kitchen with broken countertop tiles and an oven handle that couldn’t hang on to the oven door was just not cutting it anymore.

With cabinetry that continued throughout the house, the Souzas decided to leave that part alone and focus on what could be changed more easily: the counters, backsplash and appliances in both the kitchen and the laundry room sink area. They knew they wanted to keep their pur-chases local. “I could have gone to Sears or a big store and then I would have had to call Timbuktu to talk to anyone,” says Greta, so she got appliances from a local business, and went to New Again Kitchen & Bath for the granite and backsplash. “I needed a little guidance and I saw New Again Kitchen & Bath in Upgraded Living and Ric seemed so congenial.”

Ric visited the Souzas’ home to get a feel for the design and help guide Greta and John in their color choices. “He was super duper because he sat in my kitchen and looked out the window and said ‘You should bring some of the green from the backyard into the color palette. You should bring some of the red from the brick wall in as well.’”

“Greta wanted a backsplash, in her words, ‘that sparkled,’” says Ric, so the couple took Ric’s color advice and Greta’s self proclaimed “love for bling” and found several backsplash samples to take home and try out. In the end, the couple both shared the same favorite and so did Ric, although he kept that a secret so as not to interfere with his clients’ choices. “Sometimes designers try to force their taste on clients and I’ve always believed my job is to help clients find something that represents their

taste. They just so happened to pick my number one choice, and I believe in the end Greta got the kitchen that sparkled, very much like her personality.”

Their newly refreshed kitchen is sleek, colorful and modern. With a house built by Robert McCauley, they didn’t have to worry about any structural issues, mold or electrical problems. “We always watch those shows on HGTV,” says Greta, “So we were worried we would run into something--an ordeal--when we started taking things apart, but the house was very well built and it wasn’t an ordeal at all.” Along with a new kitchen, the Souzas made a new friend in Ric. “Oh we just love our Ricky,” smiles Greta, “He’s our new best friend. He loves color and so do I. It makes me happy. We giggled. Oh! We giggled. Ric’s crew was delightful. They were clean and quick. He is supposed to touch people’s lives with his design and personality. That’s just what he does.”

MEETTHE FARMER:

California Organic Flowers

BY ALYSSA WORLEY / PHOTO BY BREE CHUN

“A seed is planted. Carefully placed in the soil, lovingly watered and weeded, pruned and supported, a flower grows. Each flower on our

farm is raised from youth to be ready at a mo-ment’s notice for an important emotional mis-sion.” California Organic Flowers is a local farm with strong investment in their product. They believe each and every flower has the potential to brighten a person’s day; be it bed-side at a hospital, gracing a new bride’s bou-quet, or waving out the sides of a glass vase welcoming guests into a room.

Living and breathing the same air as the flowers compelled owners Marc Kessler and Julia Keener at Terra Bella Farm to go com-pletely organic. They didn’t want to inhale or touch any chemicals, so in 2005 they went through the USDA organic program to get their land certified. Now the only thing they respire is the fresh scent of their blossoming flowers and their hands only push into clean, soft soil.

Luckily for us, California Organic Flowers is located in our county and all it takes is a trip to the farmers market to find them, but for the rest of the United States, they are the first to offer a flower shipping website from a locally run farm. Their main reason for starting their

online organic store was because of the lack of quality flowers available. Unsurprisingly, their real field-grown fresh flowers were a hit and they were up to their necks in orders from people all over yearning for that perfect way to make someone feel special. They consis-tently continue in their mission to make peo-ple feel that way today.

Giving flowers has forever been a symbol of caring. Making up, first dates, celebrations, or giving just because; receiving a bouquet discerns a distinct sense of joy that is difficult to define in words but is notably significant. The employees and owners at California Or-ganic Farmers feel that way about each stem they pluck from the earth. “When we choose individual flowers on our farm, we tell them (yes, we really talk to your flowers!), ‘This is an important mission you have, travel proudly and be your best upon arrival.’” It is almost an Alice in Wonderland fantasy--the image of people whispering to flowers, as they bend and straighten in the breeze, but it is one of truth at this particular farm. You can tell it’s real by the beauty of the brightly colored pet-als and thick stems. At California Organic Flowers, their mission of flowers with a mes-sage is of sole importance and they are well received “all in a golden afternoon.”

Roasted Pork Loin R E C I P E S

RECIPE COURTESY OF STEVE, HEAD CHEF AT BEATNIK’S1387 E 8TH ST, CHICO, CA 95928 | (530) 894-2800PHOTO BY FRANK REBELO

BRINE INGREDIENTS1 gallon of lukewarm water2 Cups of kosher salt1 Cup of inexpensive white wine(preferably sauvignon blanc)1/2 Cup of brown sugar3 bay leaves10 black peppercorns4 juniper berries

- Combine all of these ingredients, except for the pork, into a 2 gallon plastic or non-reactive steel container.- Whisk the ingredients until dissolved.- Trim some excess fat, but not too much, and add pork to brine. Cover with plastic wrap or lid and leave at room temperature for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Pat dry and wipe excess brine of. Discard brine.

ROAST INGREDIENTSEnough vegetable, canola, corn, grapeseed or pure olive oil or ghee to coat the pan. 3 sprigs of rosemary3 sprigs of thyme1 Tbsp of butter1 head of garlic, split in halfsalt and pepper2 oz. white wine1 Cup of chicken stock

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.- Heat a large saute pan with oil in it until it starts to smoke.- Place pork loin in the pan face-down and let sizzle. Brown both sides of pork sufficiently, then add rosemary, thyme, garlic and butter to pan and place into your preheated oven.- Cook the pork for 10 minutes on each side at 400 degrees. I like an internal temperature of 125-135 for pork loin...kind of a medium rare to medium.- As you’re pulling the pork out of the oven, spoon the melted butter over the top of the pork.- Take your pork out of the pan and let it rest on a plate to allow the cooked muscles and fibers in your meat to relax and pick some of those lost juices back up from your plate.- Deglaze your pan with white wine and chicken stock. Cook over medium to low heat and reduce a bit to get all of the flavor you can from the pan. Strain and put liquid back on flame and cook until desired thickness. Season with salt and pepper and spoon onto pork.- Slice thinly across the grain, or fiber and lay on a platter or over your lemony garlic spinach.

It doesn’t take much time or prep to enjoy a relaxing picnic in your favor-ite spot. Just grab a basket, some buddies, a blanket, and don’t for-get the bug spray! Try our Upper Park picnic with cabernet sauvi-gnon, yummy herb baguette, and brie cheese topped with pepper jelly. Throw in some crisp apples or fruit of your choice for a light-er snack. Cover an empty tin can with some craft paper for a pret-ty way to keep utensils and nap-kins contained. Dress it up even more with vintage napkins and fresh flowers. Customize it to your taste and create a fun outing with friends or a romantic evening with your sweetie. The possibili-ties are endless!

When we first visited Roberta Kirshner at Barry Kirshner Wildlife Sanctuary & Educa-tional Center, she brought us into her house and kindly asked one of her volunteers, Kelly Campbell to “Go get the kid!” A few moments later, we were introduced to a Barbary lion cub that melted our hearts as it practiced its tod-dler roar and looked playfully at us with big, golden eyes. Roberta has the same motherly approach to all of her animals--they are all her “kids.”

At Kirshner, you can see the love and spe-cial treatment each animal gets. Perfectly clean enclosures far exceed the state and federal regulations and animals are fed fresh, quality meat. Above all, you can see that the animals are happy. They play, roar, splash and jump as you walk by and read each of their mini bios posted on their enclosures. These bios shed light not only on the interesting characteris-tics of each animal’s species, but they show that most of these exotic residents are “special needs” animals. Most have come to Kirshner because of health issues or other concerns that prevent their reintroduction into a natural envi-ronment and the facilities the animals were re-leased from would often have had to euthanize these animals if they did not have Kirshner as an option.

With veterinarians, opthalmologists and saint-like volunteers, these animals are giv-en the care they need to continue to survive and live out their full lives. Not only are the animals given medical care and rich, healthy

diets, but their mental health is tended to as well with daily exercise programs, enrichment activities and personal attention.

By providing schools, the community, and volunteers with up-close experiences with res-ident animals, Kirshner strives to foster an ap-preciation of the beauty of these wild animals, their place in the natural order and the critical importance of conserving both the animals and their habitats.

Most of the animals are in need of spon-sorship and any donations will help. You can also volunteer time to help with the animals or to aid in building much needed fences or structural improvements, donate building or electric materials, old cars, and of course, help spread the word! Visit Roberta and her “kids” at Barry Kirshner Wildlife Sanctuary & Edu-cational Center and fall in love with the wild.

We would like to give a very special thanks to Roberta and her amazing volunteer Kylee who were patient, kind and accommodating as we shot our fall fashion photos. Roberta graciously let us turn her kitchen into a beauty parlor and Kylee taught us about these gorgeous exotic creatures, relaxing the animals (and the humans) with her gentle spirit and expert knowledge.
