Unit 14/Assignment 1: Upgrading Hardware
Joseph Smallwood
Implications of maintaining computer hardware
Correctly maintaining a computer system can have many benefits, these include:• Performance of the system may improve• Reliability of the system may improve
• Lifespan of the computer system may improve
If the computer is faster and more reliable then the user will be more productive.
However incorrectly maintaining a computer system can have multiple drawbacks, these include:
• You may end up damaging the computer and break the computer even more• Lifespan of the computer system may be reduced• The computer system may become more unreliable
Hard Drive
Hard DriveThe hard drive is where all of your files on
your computer are stored, this includes your operating system. They either work
via magnets (HHDs) or using flash memory (SSDs). There are even some hard drives that use light to store data!
Upgrading your hard drive can have several important effects, these include:
- Faster read and write speeds (you will be able to access, move and create
your documents faster).- Your operating system will run faster
(your computer will take less time to turn on).
- Programs will take less time to load (you wont have to wait ten years for
Photoshop to load anymore).
SSD- Faster- Silent
- Lighter- Uses Less Power
HDD- Cheaper
- Can store more data- No data rot
- Longer life expectancy

Computer Security Power Supply Unit
Power Supply UnitThe Power Supply Unit is the part of the
computer that supplies the power for the rest of the computer. It changes high
voltage alternating current from a wall socket to low-voltage direct current.
Upgrading your PSU can have several benefits for your computer, these include:
- Stability (your computer will be less likely to fail, this is good if you don’t want your power supply exploding).
- More power 9 (better PSUs supply more power to the computer, this helps if you are adding lots of power hungry
components to your computer)
Random Access Memory
Random Access Memory is a form of high speed volatile storage used to store tasks
that the computer is doing. Volatile means that the memory will not retain any
information stored if it loses power.
RAM is much faster than normal memory, this means that is useful for storing data
that tasks need.
Upgrading RAM allows your computer to multitask better.
Computer Graphics Processor Unit
A Graphics Processing Unit is a computer part whose task is producing the
graphical output for monitors. It’s main role is to render video game and other 3d applications. GPUs have their own form
of RAM called VRAM (Video RAM).
Upgrading the GPU will have a considerable effect in 3d applications
such as video games or other 3d graphic software.
