Happy Women’s Day Happy Women’s Day The 09th August and the month of August mark Women’s Day and Women’s Month respectively in South Africa. We take this opportunity to wish all the phenomenal women out there , in South Africa particularly and indeed throughout the world, a Happy Women’s Day and an exceptional Women’s Month. Enjoy the recognition and accolades given to the fairest of the human race during this month!

When I made woman, God says, she had to be special I made her shoulders strong enough to carry the weight of the world,

yet gentle enough to give comfort. I gave her an inner strength to endure childbirth

and the rejection that many times comes from her children. I gave her a hardness that allows her to keep going when everyone else gives up,

and take care of her family through sickness and fatigue without complaining. I gave her the sensitivity to love her children under any and all circumstances,

even when her child has hurt her very badly. I gave her strength to carry her husband through his faults

and fashioned her from his rib to protect his heart. I gave her wisdom to know that a good husband never hurts his wife,

but sometimes tests her strengths and her resolve to stand beside him unfalteringly. And finally, I gave her a tear to shed. This is exclusively hers to use whenever it is needed. The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the

way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman must be seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart—the place where love resides. ⌘

FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK

Happy women’s month everybody!!! (Happy Dance) Yes, gentlemen, you too can help us to celebrate women’s month...After all, it is only one month of the twelve calendar months per year… The United Nations theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is INSPIRING CHANGE”. A topic that is very close to my heart. What is change (verb)? To make or become different...My interpretation of this is the fact that as human beings we are forever evolving/changing. Changing, growing and often daring to be different. But inspiring change as a verb is not just passively existing and allowing life to be happening to you, when in fact, you ought to be happening to life. It is actually the act of doing”. I find this year’s theme particularly interesting as inspiring and change are used to create the theme, thus making it quite a powerful statement that would be intriguing for any person who lives their lives to the fullest or like me is still on the journey towards living life to the fullest! On the other hand, inspiring is derived from the word aspire; which literally translated by the Free Dictionary means; 1)To affect, guide or arouse by divine influence; 2a)To fill with enlivening or exalting emotion: (e.g hymns that inspire the congregation; an artist who was inspired by impressionism); 2b)To affect or touch: (the falling leaves affected her with sadness); 3)To stimulate to action (which in itself is change): motivate (e.g A sales force that was inspired by a bonus); 4)To draw forth; elicit or arouse (A teacher who inspired admiration and respect); 5)To be the cause or source of ; bring about (An invention that inspired many imitations); 6)To stimulate energies, ideals, or reverence: (A leader who inspires by example). In a nutshell, I guess all that I am trying to emphasize is the fact that INSPIRING CHANGE comprises of two action items. We are therefore being encouraged by this year’s theme to;

To act.

To do.

To be effective for ourselves and for our circle of influence. In which areas are we to be active to be well rounded people? In the eight areas of our lives; 1)Career/Work; 2)Creativity; 3)Intellectual; 4)Health & Fitness; 5)Social; 6)Family; 7)Companionship & Intimacy; and 8) Austerity (I think this is one of the most important ones)!!! We are all taught over and over again at Team Building Sessions that this is what we all need to lead a fully balanced life as well rounded people. But how often do we make a conscious effort to apply any of the above? In closing, we will only be able to INSPIRE CHANGE when we have applied the same principle to our own lives. We cannot give/share what we do not have...That’s just the way it is!!! Georgina Musekiwa President & Founder—Acts of Faith

It’s August! Wow! How time flies when you are having fun! The year is almost over!! It seems just like yesterday when we were entering the new year carrying all our hopes and aspirations for the next 12 months. Some of us even made that list of new years resolutions that were supposed to guide the path for our intended goals and anticipated achievements during the course of the year. As we begin the second part of the year it does not hurt for us to reflect on what we’ve done so far and measure the extent to which we have cultivated an enabling environment for the goals we set in January to flourish. If you have then big ups to you and keep on keeping on! If you have not, its never too late. Allow this half-way mark to give you that second chance that you need to fulfil your goals for the year. There is nothing more disheartening than looking back on the year and realising that nothing on any of your lists has a tick next to it. That’s 12 months gone to waste. A year of your life down in the doldrums. I’m happy to share the fact that one of the biggest goals that I set for myself is in motion as we speak. The 1st of January 2014 marked the going off of the gun at the starting line and since that day I’ve been doing something every day, no matter how small or big, to help me reach my finishing line. I must admit

that it has not been easy, and I certainly would have liked to have achieved much more, but what I’ve done so far will give me something to look back on at the end of the year. With that having been said, this newsletter was one of our President’s goals for the year. Congratulations to her for creating this platform and for seeing to it that it gets the wings that it deserves to fly. We need your help to ensure that these wings carry us to a place where our existence is of benefit to those who we cater for. We invite each and every one of you to make this newsletter your own. Send us your news, your stories, your testimonies, your prayer requests, your jokes, your observations or comments about things happening around us, or anything else of interest and relevance to other members of the network. I would also like to take this opportunity to wish all the ladies in South Africa and beyond a Happy Women’s Day on the 09th August 2014, and a joyful Women’s Month. Keep your stars shining and keep being a source of marvel to those around you. And finally, a very happy and blessed birthday on the 09th August to our wonderful, awesome, gifted, inspirational, motivational, spiritual, loving, caring GINA!! We wish her a truly fantastic day that is filled with an abundance of joy, happiness, and love. Once again, have yourselves a great month ahead and don’t forget to keep your messages and contributions rolling in. See you in September!! ⌘ Regards,

REFLECTIONS REFLECTIONS with Reverend F.Y.Z Takavarasha

God loved us first! The Christian Holy Bible is many things to many people, but nobody reading it would refute the fact that it is a "Manual of Life". The Old Testament, although concerned mostly about a family, puts a lot of emphasis on human relationships. In it we find the first directions, rules and regulations, laws, if you like, that God gave. We call these commandments. The laws and constitutions of many countries have these as the background. The first four of the ten have to do with God, the rest have to do with living peacefully with others, in short, they have to do with human relationships. When Jesus comes on the scene in the New Testament, while his Mission is reconciling the sinful human being to God, his theme is "LOVE", of God and neighbour, and alongside it, the theme of humility. As Jesus walked from place to place, he taught humility and demonstrated love and compassion. The main topic of "Kingdom of God" always had love and humility attached to it. Towards the end of his life, Jesus sought to emphasise his teachings by washing his disciples' feet and asking them to do the same to each other in the future. "A new commandment I give you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another" (John 13:34-35) Jesus reiterates in John 15:12 and 15:17 the same teaching of "Love" In the parable of the good Samaritan which Jesus tells after provocation and questioning by a learned Jewish lawyer, Jesus highlights the good deeds of a Samaritan whom he hails as a good neighbour because of love and compassion for an injured man even though Samaritans were regarded with disdain. Jesus' teaching of Love for one another was taken up as a new way of life by his followers after the washing of their feet as evidenced by the 56 other verses that make clear reference to human relationships of care and compassion to and for "one another". These would include; 1 Peter 5:5, Galatians 6:2, Ephesians 4:2, Colossians 3:13, 1 Thess 3:12, Rom 15:7, Heb10:24, Mark 9:50, James 5:16, Phil 2:3 etc.

What Jesus taught compares favourably with the South African way of life called "UBUNTU" literally translated; "Humaneness", in proverb form; "Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu - a person is a person through other persons". To be human is the ability to live well with other humans. Across the border in Zimbabwe the highest character accolade one can be given is being described as "MUNHU" (human being) or having "HUNHU" (good human qualities). The opposite of course is being called "MHUKA" (animal). If you are a human being you will be civil to other human beings and failure to do so renders you an animal...yet in a lot of cases animals do show more compassion to other animals than humans do to other humans. What am I saying then? I suppose I am saying the theme of love for one another that runs through the Bible is not only relevant to all cultures, belief systems, and persuasions, but is adaptable for use by all human beings. We can love because God loved us first! Shalom Rev F.Y.Z. Takavarasha

Commemorating women’s rights in SA South Africa celebrates Women’s Month in August as a tribute to the thousands of women who marched to the Union Buildings on 09 August 1956 in protest against the extension of Pass Laws to women. This historic march was a turning point in the role of women in the struggle for freedom, and society at large. Since that eventful day, women from all walks of life became equal partners in the struggle for a non-racial and non-sexist South Africa. The march was co-ordinated by the Federation of South African Women (FedSaw) led by four women; Lillian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Rahima Moosa, and Sophia Williams De Bruyn. These leaders delivered petitions to the then Prime Minister JG Strijdom’s office at the Union Buildings. Women throughout the country had put

their names to these petitions, indicating their anger and frustration at having their freedom of movement restricted by the hated official passes. The Government of South Africa declared August Women’s Month and 09 August is celebrated annually as Women’s Day. Women’s Month is a tribute not only to the thousands of women who marched on that day in 1956, but also a tribute to the pioneers of the women’s movement in South Africa, dating back to 1913, when women like Charlotte Maxeke led the way in establishing the ANC Women’s League and encouraging women to engage in the struggle for freedom.⌘

Overcoming Adversity Dare to live without Limits

Adversity is an unavoidable part of life. Death of a loved one, breakup of a relationship, malicious action by another, job loss, natural disaster, or any other undesirable event are all circumstances people encounter. Events happen that are beyond our control. Successfully overcoming adversity is essential for a healthy life. Overcoming adversity builds mental strength, character, and endurance. You develop in ways that would not otherwise be possible. When undesirable incidents occur, you want to avoid the pitfall of the past and becoming mired in the would have, could have, or should have trap. It’s done and over. Adversity is overcome by moving forward. Nothing you can do, say, think or feel will ever change the past. Wallowing in feelings of guilt, regret, or despair will diminish the present and compromise the future. Although its difficult to accept unpleasant events, you have no choice, they have already occurred. The goal is to adjust your outlook to enable you to function and move ahead.

Adverse reactions are not unusual when faced with adversity. Feelings of denial, sickness, giving up, retribution, being overwhelmed, inactivity, anger, guilt, and ‘why me’ are not common. These reactions are counter-productive causing you to feel worse. Anger or bitterness poisons you and impedes your recovery. You have control over your reaction to adversity. You have been conditioned by how others respond to unpleasant circumstances. However, most people aren't a good role model for effectively dealing with adversity. Adverse situations can be divided into three categories; events you have no control or influence over, situations resulting from decisions you made, and circumstances caused by someone else’s actions. Effort spent on lamenting the past drains you of energy needed to handle the present and plan for the future. Your energy is best spent ensuring that you will be ok. After experiencing a loss, a period of grieving is normal but should not become a way of life. Everything in life is temporary. What varies is the timing. As much as you may miss someone, there are people who depend on and need you. Focusing on the needs of others is an effective and positive way to move forward. Perhaps you are unhappy with the results from your decisions. Everyone makes bad calls. How do you get back

on track? Learn from your experiences and keep going. Inaction will cause you to feel worse. Channelling your energy into positive action is one of the best cures for being disheartened. For example, if you’ve lost a job, immediately begin the process of getting another one. If a relationship has ended without any chance of reconciliation, take comfort in the fact that there are numerous people in the same boat. Get out, circulate, and meet people. If you’ve made a bad decision and are unhappy with your circumstances, resolve to change direction. Effecting a correction can be difficult, but persisting in an unhappy state is torture. Everyone encounters adversity. No one is ever singled out. No one knows why some things happen, they just do. Some decide to regain their footing, catch their breath and keep walking forward. Others choose to give up. Each time you overcome adversity you get stronger and wiser and can teach others by example how to do it also.⌘

10 Things we can learn from children Children are sometimes the best illustration of life’s most simple, yet most overlooked principles. The simplest of their actions can reveal so much about our own lives. The fact that they are blissfully unaware, yet totally in the moment is intriguing. Whether it is sleeping like an angel or smiling like a princess, adults can learn so many things from children. Read on and be amazed.

10. Always ask for what you want Children never hesitate to ask for what they think is rightfully theirs. In fact they demand for it. We adults don’t always come forward and ask for what we want for fear of rejection.

9. Fearlessness Children always want to explore. And they are not afraid to do so. Adults likewise, need to be bold. Be bold and take the step already!

8. Enjoy yourself and enjoy life Kids always play pranks and have fun. In the daily rush of activities of every day life we forget to be ourselves. We forget our identity amongst the clutter of life. Enjoying your life will give you truest of satisfaction.

7. Live for the moment Yes! Live for the moment. If you are unhappy now just let it go with this moment and be happy for the next. It is the present that matters the most. You must make use of the present in the best possible way. Live in the moment. Live it fully.

6. Imagination & curiosity Kids have really wild imagination. Such is the power of their mind. They are optimistic and foster bold and unconventional ideas. They are hopeful of the future. Kids are generally curious. They want to know what is behind the façade. Adults need to have this same enquiring mind.

5. Enthusiasm & activeness Kids approach everything with zest and zeal and verve. Without enthusiasm and excitement life does not have any charm. Kids don’t laze around the way we do at times. They don’t adopt the sedentary lifestyle that we do. They are physically very active, always up to something

4. Be free spirited Kids are free spirits. They are impulsive. They have no inhibitions whatsoever. They say what they feel and they are very expressive. As an adult, let your inner spirit fly out of the prison that is constructed by your negative thoughts. Just be yourself.

3. Innocence Innocence is a child’s best quality. Children have no malice. They have a very clear conscience.

2. Affection Children show affection towards people right from the time they start to recognise them. Children care a lot for the people they consider as close. They show their affection through small tokens. They make efforts to get noticed. They make friends in all age groups.

1. To be truly happy Happiness comes from within. Children show this better than anyone else. They are always happy, no matter what. Their mirth brightens everyone around them. The way they burst into peals of laughter is something one cannot miss. Their cackle and their ever so cherubic smile can melt anyone’s heart. ⌘
