the PRESIDENTS RAMBLINGS

Greetings All,

My how time flies, here we are in November and deer season and some funny white stuff was falling

from the sky the other day. A fellow carver offered up this pearl of wisdom at my last shop session,

Life is like a roll of toilet paper, the smaller it gets, the faster it goes. Seems to be fairly accurate.

And on that note, coming up very soon (November 15th to be precise) a nominating committee will

be named to receive nominations for folks who wish to run for office in the Maine Wood Carvers.

(I know, I Know, everyone is probably sick of elections and commercials and all the negative crap. I

know I am). A reminder of how this works:

SECTION III, NOMINATIONS AND ELECTIONS

The President shall name the members of the Nominating Committee by November 15 of each year.

The Nominating Committee shall elect its Chair. The Nominating Committee shall:

a. Compile a slate of candidates for each office(s) and position(s) to be filled. In addition, any

member of MWCA may suggest the name of any other member as a candidate for office, provided

the nominated member is willing to serve.

b. The Secretary shall notify the general membership, by way of publication in The Maine Carver,

the name of each candidate for Office. Nominations will close on the first day of January.

c. A ballot, with the names of the candidates for office, shall be mailed, no later than February 10, to

all members in good standing of the Maine Wood Carvers Association. All completed ballots must be

returned, in a plain, unmarked envelope, to the Secretary by March 1 for confirmation of eligibility.

The votes will be counted by the Chairman of the Nominating Committee and in the presence of all

interested parties on March 15.

d. The term of office shall be two years. Officers may be reelected to consecutive terms of office.

The above section is straight from the bylaws, and that’s how it shall be done. Hopefully we will have

some folks step up and run for office and keep the Association going. Personally, I am on my

second term as President and think that it is time for someone else to take a turn. I am not running,

hopefully someone else will.

Bob Grimm

MWCA CHAPTER REPORTS Streaked Mt. Wood Carvers

Streaked Mt. Wood Carvers Submitted by Sheri Fowler October meeting enjoyable as always, seven in attendance- hooray for Bernadette; she is an inspiration for positive attitude! Chuck Perry welcome with his astute observations. Our President Art gave a debriefing of our unique Camp ‘N Carve: 16 class participants, about the same as last year, for the four classes. All teachers seem willing to do it again next year, thank you Sally, Rick, Kathy and Loyd! Karen Knowles a possibility too for next year. A total of $240 brought in, after $100 for the Porta Potti we have $140 which we are thinking would be good to use for traveling stipend for next years Instructors; or something along those lines. A couple changes to application- member and non-member pricing; and to stress blank fees etc are to be paid directly to Instructor. It was suggested to have a mini class or variation of carve-around Friday after the pot luck supper, which was heartily agreed upon. Next year the church has booked another event during our normal time slot, so we’ll probably hold Camp ‘N Carve the first weekend of September instead of the second. Chuck and Norm’s season is done at the Shakers; Cumberland Fair went well with a good time and appreciated promoting. The Rhode Island event a great success with 76 in attendance plus instructors. Bob stressed Christmas decorations donations for the Shriners tree, Buckfield Evening Star Lodge due at the next November meeting! Last year the tree brought in $3,000 at the Festival of Trees at the Lewiston KORA Temple, which with the other 30 to 40 trees goes to the Shriner’s Hospital. Keep in mind for a special event, we have free use of the Buckfield Lodge. IDEAS needed for future meetings: Bob will do Christmas Ornament for the November meeting. I suggested a mini demo of proper angle, safety features etc on electric sharpener wheel and buffer- but maybe old hat for most. Same on the 1,001 attachments for Dremel tool. And how to build an inexpensive dust collector. Bernadette, our computer savvy Editor, suggested YouTube! Duh, thanks. Maybe a viewing and demo of Fur, Feather & Fin video. Which brought into question the availability of the library book loan aspect of our membership- which doesn’t work: no one wants the responsibility to house it. Same with the specimens to study??? As Art Chamberlin says: ”keep going with the grain!”

Poland Spring Carvers

Due to illness the secretary is unable to give the monthly meeting report.

Here is a summery of what transpired. (BH)

The meeting was short with little to no business to transact or lengthy discussion about any

particular subject. Meeting was adjourned and we all went back to carving.

COASTAL CARVERS Coastal Carvers Meeting Oct.27, 2018 Due to the weather only 10 were in attendance. Jim called the meeting to order. O.B. Karen reported that the R.I. Show went well and shared pictures. N.B. It was decided that our Christmas Party would be held at 11:30 am on Dec. 8th at the Wades. A snow date of Dec. 15th was also set. As usual we are to bring a carved or wood burned gift we made wrapped but not labeled for the swap. At our next meeting we will have the sign up sheet for food you wish to bring. Please save those dates. Show-n-Tell: Gary shared his jack-o-lantern and carved bark house with light inside; Marshall had 3 jack-o-lanterns hollowed out of different sizes, a witch and a black cat; Karen had 2 jack-o-lanterns with lights (one with a tea light and one with a Pico LED light), she also had a tall pumpkin man; Richard N. had a black capped Chick-a-dee on a wood mount; Jim is working on a mirror frame with a carved eagle. Refreshments were next followed by Gary leading us in carving Cotton wood bark houses. Karen also brought in some bark. Some decided they would do some bark animals instead of houses. A fun time was had by all. Thank you for your direction. Next month will be led by Karen and in the Spirit of the season she will show us how to make a Gnome. Please bring in a piece of bass wood 4 1/2 " tall x 1 1/2" square if you can. Also you will need: a v-tool, small gouge and carving knives for this project. We will have some bass wood here if you just call ahead. Respectfully Submitted, Barbara Wade Pictures by Karen Knowles

Tongue-in-cheek take on common carving tools and materials By Bob Duncan #1 CA glue: To glue your thumb to the piece of wood you are trying to replace back to the carving. Also serves to glue cut skin back together and glue your thumb to the cut. #2 Band aids: To cover the CA glue you use to glue together a cut and keep your thumb out of the glue. Also works to hold gauze against the glue long enough to adhere it to the cut. #3 Acetone: To un-glue fingers stuck together, or to remove the gauze stuck inside a cut. WARNING: Feels like molten lava inside said cut. #4 Carving Glove: To make your spouse feel better when you start carving. Also gives your spouse a distraction from the blood while he or she is driving you to the emergency room for stitches. #5 Thumb guard: A prosthetic callous for your thumb that you removed with surgical precision with your last knife cut. If the last cut was deep enough to require a CA glue patch, a permanent prosthetic callous for said thumb. #6 Carver’s screw: Similar to a medieval thumbscrew, but used to smash your pinkie finger between the base of a carving and the workbench. Dastardly versions require the use of a wrench to tighten down, and said wrench always drops out of reach as soon as pressure is applied to the pinkie. #7 Aggressive rotary carving bits: An inexpensive substitute for professional micro-dermibrasion treatment and other forms of plastic surgery. CAUTION: Check with your service provider before buying a rotary power carver repackaged as do-it-yourself face lift kit. #8 Carving mallet: Meat tenderizer for the web of skin between your thumb and forefinger. Also works well as a distraction when you drop it on your toe after tenderizing said web of skin. #9 Wood burner: Mystical tool that heats up and cools off at will, usually cooling off when touching wood, and heating up when exposed to skin. #10 Sharpening Stone: Expensive paper weights used to hold down reference material. Also work well to beat unruly carving tools and bits into submission.

Submitted by Todd Wisell Santa egg is the Seacoast Carvers project for October to December. We purchased goose size basswood eggs from Wilcox Wood Works, Minong, WI. The pattern is a Tina Toney pattern from the book Creative Christmas Carvings
