LOCAL fisherman Mervin Polley’s boat, tractor, acompressor and his neighbour’s motor cyclewere gutted by fire on his property in Kingsway,

Amanzimtoti in the early hours of Thursday, 12 December.

Polley says he and his wife were woken up at 3amby Mike Meulmann, who also lives on the property, saying that there was a fire. Meulmann heard a popping noise when the tractor caught alight.

“When I looked outside I just saw yellow as thetractor was engulfed in flames. We rushed outsideand Mike tried to put out the fire using a hosepipe, but there was too much heat. At that stage the boatwas still intact and I was going to run it away fromthe tractor and the fire, but I could not get the stonesout from under the trailer’s wheels and before I knewit, the boat also caught alight,” Polley told the Fever.

He quickly removed four 25litre containers of fuelfrom the boat, but their attempt to contain the firewith a hosepipe was fruitless. The boat, tractor, motorbike and compressor were destroyed. He believesthe fire was deliberately set as a can of fuel near theboat was missing.

“The other cans behind the tractor can be seenburnt in the places where they stood, but this specificone is missing,” he said. A neighbour phoned the firebrigade and divisional fire brigade commander MikePonyecz and his team responded.

“The call came through to the communicationcentre in Durban at 3.46am and we were alerted at3.48am. We arrived at 3.54am and found Polley andhis neighbour trying to put the fire out. We put thefire out and Polley was given oxygen because ofsmoke inhalation,” Ponyecz said.

Polley suffered loss of over R200 000 as the boat, valued at R150 000 and the tractor at R80 0000were burnt.

The ET Rapid Response Team received a call fromthe CCPO regarding a house breakin in Ngobeni Drive,Athlone Park on Wednesday afternoon, 11 December.

Tony Lokker, managing member of ET RapidResponse, said they immediately proceeded tothe house.

“When we arrived at

the scene we were met by the complainant whopointed out the direction in which the alleged suspectran. Alex Chapman, from the ET tactical responseteam ran into the bush after the suspect. Other members from ET and CCPO cordoned off the bush whileChapman was inside,” he said. A while later Chapmantold the members he saw the suspect dropping a birdcage and running further into the bush. The MetroDog Unit was dispatched and Sergeant Shawn Joosteand his dog Kulu arrived. “Jooste and Kulu also wentinto the bush looking for the suspect. A while laterKulu apprehended the suspect in the bush,” Lokkersaid. The lovebirds and household items taken in theburglary were returned to the owner.

The alleged suspecttold the arrestingauthorities that he wasgoing to eat the birdsbecause he “was hungry”.

“The arrest and return of the homeowner’s pro perty are theresult of good work between the relevant security organisationsand the metro police,”Lokker said.

Beach lawkeeping responsibility hots upSETON THOMPSON>>[email protected]

RESPONSIBILITY for themaintenance of law and or-der on the beaches, Scott-

burgh main beach in particular, continues to go back and forth be-tween the SAPS and the UmdoniProtection Services.

At a council meeting onWednesday, 11December,Munic-ipalManagerXolaniLuthulistatedthat “protection services’s prima-ry responsibility is traffic controlandthatassistingSAPSwithcrimecontrol is secondary.

The municipality urgentlyneeds to debate the matter indepth with them”.

Speaker SykesNaidoo said the“SAPS is passing on their respon-sibility to us, it is an unfundedmandate”.

The meeting had earlier ap-proved the payment of an addi-tional R27 000 towards theBobbies on the Beat programmewhereby themunicipality supple-mentspaymentof reserveofficersduring holiday periods.

However, that led to a querywhether any of this should be di-rected towards policing the Scott-

burgh Mall, deemedtobetheresponsibil-ity of the owners as aprivate property.

The municipalmanager said themunicipality accept-ed that it has a re-sponsibility towardsthesafetyof thecom-munity but ques-

tioned that which extended to theprotection of private assets.

Later onWednesday at a Scott-burghCommunityPolicingForummeeting, it was noted that at anearlier meeting between law en-forcement agencies and Umdonibeach management it had beenemphasised that “it is the primaryfunction of the protection services

to enforce the law”.Scottburghpolice commission-

er Lieutenant-Colonel Naicker ex-plained the SAPS policy is that intheeventofaseriouscrime(armedrobbery for example) coincidingwith a municipal by-law trans-gression, the formerwill bepriori-tised if available resources are in-adequate to deal with both.

Dear Fever,ON behalf of most of the residents of

Scottburgh, I wish to apologise to the visit-ing holidaymakers for the poor state of ourtown.

I thank you for coming to this beautifulpart of KZN to enjoy yourself and spendyour money.

Without you our town would struggle to ,so we need your presence verymuch, but you might find this hard to be-lieve judging by the state of our town andbeach area.

After your bad experience last year whenour town ran out of water, I’m sure you ex-pected us to get our act together and make aspecial effort to prepare for your arrival thisyear, but this was not to be.

There are deep potholes in our roads, soplease be warned to drive carefully.

Many of our street lights are still notworking but the Rotary clock at the rounda-bout has been repaired and looks great.

The stench of raw sewage from our de-crepit waste water plant now blows beyondthe usual Bermuda Way golf course areaand stretches as far as David Road in Scott-burgh South, nearly one kilometre away.

Sorry about that, but if you are not stay-

ing down wind, you’ll be fine. The most important place for your recre-

ation is the beach which has been cleared ofall the sugar cane washed up after the re-cent storms.

However, paint is peeling off the crackedbeach buildings, and precast walls arelying broken and barriers are rustingaway.

Most important of all, is the disappointingclosure of the Phat Boyz Restaurant and Pubas well as the Beachcomber shop.

The municipality decided that a change ofownership was needed, and this is theresult.

We know that the national public holi-days are chaotic so I suggest you lie lowduring those days or drive to some of thescenic places inland.

We have tried to get the municipality tohear our constant pleas to prepare our townfor your arrival.

Please understand that the Scottburghresidents do care.

We hope that you’ll give us yet anotherchance next year to get our town right foryour visit. Again, my apologies.

Dear Fever,THE long-awaited results of successful ten-

ders were published at the end of July 2013.These were as follows — Wimpy, fun hire,

miniature golf, and waterslide remained withthe current lease holders. The tender for thepub known as Phat Boyz was awarded toTholakele Maintenance and RenovationServicesCC,whointimatedthatarestaurantofthe Keg franchise would occupy the Phat Boysarea.

The ice-cream shop was awared to Um-sawakho PKTrading. These new leaseswouldcome into effect on 1 August 2013 and wouldrun for nine years, 11 months.

The leaseholders for PhatBoyz and the ice-cream shop were requested to remove the fit-tings and equipment from these premises sothat thenew leaseholders couldhave “vacant”occupation.

Dear Fever,On Friday, 6 December, I had

breakfast with a friend at Nino’sArbour Crossing, Amanzimtoti. Igave the friend a present as it washer birthday.

We had a great time and left.Twohours latershesentmeames-sage to say that she had left thepresent at Nino’s. I was nearby, sowent to the restaurant to see if it

was still there. The staff dashed around look-

ing in the office and behind thecounter. I glanced over my shoul-der—andthereitwas—stillonthetable, untouched.

Isn’t it great to get good news.Yay for Nino’s Arbour Crossing. Itis simply the best.

Simply the best

Not an ensemble for successDear Fever,

RECENTLY John Steenhuisen,DemocraticAlliancespokesperson forCo-operative Governance and Tradi-tional Affairs (Cogta) in the KZN legis-lator, responded to my letter that ap-peared in a local newspaper whereinhe made small talk of the discord anduncertain future of the DA.

The standoff betweenproandanti-equityemploymentbill lobbyistscouldwell be an attempt by the DA to stagetransformation in the party by fakingablackcoupd’étatwithHelenZillesur-rendering the leadership to LindiweMazibuko in an unconventional man-ner to lure black votes.

A recent KZNweekend newspaperreported a breakdown in the relation-ship between Zille and Mazibuko,

reachingapointofnoreturnaswell asmentioning the existence of a blackcaucus in the DA.

As the result the of the hullabaloothe DA performance in the eThekwiniregion in 2016 municipal electionscould well be affected. The loss of thewards that include the Bluff andAmanzimtotiareas ispossible.eThek-wini Wards 66 and 97 respectivelyhaveexperiencedasignificant changein voter demographics. The dugoutport on the cards for the area betweenthetwowardswillcertainlydarkenthehue of the pre 1994 white suburbs.

The dynamics of the DA forerun-ners, the United Party (UP), Progres-sive Party (PP) followed by a new Pro-gressiveFederalParty(PFP)couldcur-rently be alive and well in the official

opposition. The UP split in 1977 withthemore liberalmembers of the partyfindingahomein thePFP. If thisevolu-tionary trend of the official oppositionprevails we could face a possible sce-nario of DA lateral thinkers breakingaway to formaunited oppositionwithCope,Agangandothersmallerpartiesthatenjoycredibility inthemindsetsofthe black voters. The Freedom Frontcould become home for the DA con-servatives.

Could it be anenactment toportraythe so-called black influence in theDAas robust and ready for 2014? TheDAmust realise toyi-toyiing to the musicfrom a concertina is not an ensemblefor success.

Tough Telfer winsKZN junior champs atSelborne

LALI STANDER

BRYANSTON’S Kaleigh Telfer showed a lot of guts, grit and determination to complete a wiretowire victory at the KwaZuluNatalJunior Championship at Selborne Park Golf Club recently.

The 15yearold carded rounds of 757475 to beat local favourite Michaela Fletcher by nine shots for the title, barely two weeksafter she defeated South African number one Kim Williams for theMpumalanga Championship. The fact that Telfer popped in thefinal putt wearing only her socks underlines the determined teenager’s competitive spirit.

Just two days before the 54hole stroke play tournament, Telferrippedthenailoffherbigtoewhenshespilledoffhermotorbike, but pulling out of the event was just not an option. “I really wantedto compete in the KZN junior champs, because we had alreadymade all the arrangements to travel to Selborne, it was the lastevent of the season and I was coming into some really good form,”said the brave youngster.

“I felt I could deal with the injury, but I have to admit it wasan agonising ordeal but so worth it.” Telfer had to have her footredressed after every nine holes and even had to play the last twoholes of the final round in socks. Nothing a couple of pain killerscouldn’t solve, but the pain was really bad down the stretch andI just couldn’t keep my shoes on once we got past the 16th. It’sfantastic to finish the season on such a high note, though, andit was definitely worth the pain.”

Telfer rose to prominence when she claimed a rare double ather home course. She won the prestigious Ladies Club Championship in May and claimed the Junior Club Championship in June tobecome the first player to win both titles in the same calendaryear. At 15, Telfer was also one of the youngest Ladies Club Championship winners since 1958. Named the Most Improved Junior Ladies Golfer 2012/2013 by Women’s Golf South Africa, Telfer currently ranks sixth in the national junior and 10th in the nationalsenior rankings. She also represented Ladies Golf Gauteng at thePick n Pay South African Women’s InterProvincial in 2012 and 2013and received Federation colours for representing South African atthe Enjoy Jakarta World Junior Golf Championships.

Maritzburg’s Fletcher, meanwhile, ended her junior career witha runnerup finish after carding rounds of 777581. Fletcher finished six shots ahead of Shawnelle de Lange, who took third on239 with rounds of 797981. The Goldfields golfer finished twoshots clear of Mount Edgecombe’s BrittneyFay Berger (788578).
