From Antioch, he went to Jerusalem to discuss whether Gentiles needed to be circumcised or not. SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME/C READINGS: Isaiah 62:1-5; 1 Corinthians 12:4-11

GOSPEL: John 2:1-11

Upper Mt Gravatt Wishart Parish

Guided by the Holy Spirit, we aim to be an evangelising, faith-filled parish whose members care for one another and are welcoming and inclusive.

‘A new beginning...’

Usually in Year C, the Gospels are taken from Luke, but today, in keeping with a theme of ‘beginning’ we hear the first miracle story from the Gospel of John. It is a story you are probably familiar with; how Jesus was able to provide an enormous amount of very good wine for the wedding group at Cana. But this is just the surface story. The way John’s Gospel works is to use these dramatic miracles as ‘signs’ pointing to something far deeper. We are told at the end of this scene, ‘This was the first of the signs’ so it is important when reading John to know that the meaning of the miracle will be hidden below the surface sign. [See ‘A Friendly Guide to John’s Gospel’ by Mary L Coloe,

Mulgrave: Garratt Publishing, 2013. It is a helpful guide for parishes and RCIA candidates.] During next few Sundays, the first Reading is from Paul to the Corinthians – a fascinating community of enthusiastic, yet often misguided members. I provide here some background to Paul’s Letter.

Paul was in Corinth in the early 50’s and was successful in his mission. The tone of 1 Thessalonians, which was written from Corinth, is warm and affectionate. He left Corinth for Antioch around 51 CE collecting money from Macedonia for Jerusalem. On the way to Antioch, he called at Ephesus, which is on the coast of Asia Minor and was the capital of the Roman province of Asia. From Antioch, he went to Jerusalem to discuss whether Gentiles needed to be circumcised or not. This decision went in his favour but later there was a falling out with Peter over the Gentiles in Antioch. After this falling out Paul had no letters of recommendation from a Church; he lacked a legitimate church base. He moved into Galatia then returned to Ephesus.

Chloe, a wealthy business woman from Ephesus, went to Corinth probably on business and brought back news of the Corinthian community to Paul. Her report was not good and so Paul sent Timothy to Corinth. Then, while Timothy was in transit, some emissaries arrived from Corinth with a letter from the Corinthians about problems with sexual immorality and divisions in the community. He wrote the letter we have as 1 Corinthians.

Today’s reading is a part of Paul’s argument to heal the divisions within the community caused by the variety of gifts and probably competitiveness and boasting. In a community where differences have led to factions and division, Paul emphasises unity in diversity – one spirit, one lord, one God.

Differences of gifts there are — but the same Spirit

Differences of ministries there are — but the same Lord

And differences of energies — but the same God

Energising all things in all.

A principle is then stated: Gifts are for community, for the common good.

This teaching continues next week using the image of the body.

Bethany: A Grief Support Group

A Ministry of Upper Mt Gravatt Wishart Catholic

Parish

Our Tasks: We aim to minister to members of our parish by:

Supporting those experiencing grief

Visiting or phoning, on behalf of the parish, bereaved families, who are assured of the sympathy of the parish

Offering Hospitality by being available to provide refreshments following the funeral

Inviting next of kin to an annual prayer and afternoon tea in memory of their loved ones

Prepare and celebrate Eucharist annually on the first Saturday in November to commemorate the death of loved ones

Preparing a social event ending in Advent Prayer for people who have lost a spouse during the previous twelve months

Sending a card to families on the first anniversary of death.

We do this as a team. Not everybody does everything. The jobs are shared around according to people’s time and availability. Can you lend your hand to even a small activity, eg baking for a funeral morning tea; serving a cuppa after a funeral; being part of the organising team meeting once a month. They are not difficult tasks when shared by more people. Even if you are working you might be able to bake something or make sandwiches for different occasions.

Many hands make light work!

Please call the parish office if you think you could assist in any way. Ph 3849 7158.

Musicians Needed!

Do you play keyboard, piano or organ? Are you able to assist occasional ly? A reasonable standard of skill is required. Our very generous musicians, sometimes need a break for various reasons. Please contact Trish or Danuta if you are interested. We can offer assistance and help with resources and Liturgical needs.

Journeying in Faith

Please keep our Catechumens Barbara and Lewis and candidates Kevin and Sally, in your prayers as they journey towards full Initiation at Easter.

May the Holy Spirit walk with them as they discern and engage in their relationship with God, themselves

and you, their community.

Are you interested

in the Catholic

Faith?

We encourage you to ask that question! All are welcome. Come as you are and continue your faith journey to find out if you would like to be part of our community. Check in with Trish 3849 7158.

Parents of 7+

year olds

Would you like your child to be part of the Sacramental Program

in the second half of the year?

Parents of all children 7 years and older are invited to register them for the Sacrament program at any time of the year. However, for children to be part of the group in the second half of this year they need to be registered now. There are four steps: Step 1: Contact the parish office 3849 7158 and register your child who will receive a Mass card.

Step 2: Come along with your child to any of the weekend parish Masses to enable your child to learn the ropes, feel confident in the church, participate in the liturgy as he/she is ready and begins to feel at home.

Step 3: As Fr Pat gets to know you and your child he will write and invite you to take the next step.

Step 4: Children are enrol led in the Sacrament Program and will attend family c e n t r e d a c t i v i t y sessions to prepare for the celebration of Confirmation and

First Communion.

Registration to reception of the Sacraments is based on a child’s readiness. It is tailored individually for families and children. There are many children from approximately 14 schools within our parish who are involved in our parish Sacramental journey. If any children are not yet Baptised, for any reason, please contact the parish office to speak to us. At least one parent must be Catholic. Both Fr Pat and Trish are happy to talk to you about the process and assist you in any way.
